Walking In The Shadow

Rate this book
Walking in the Shadow is a stunning account of a young life chronicling experiences children shouldn’t have to face, defied expectations, and found refuge in the most unexpected way. It is about a life that began and nearly ended in war-torn Iraq. Told with candor, sorrow, and hope, we are invited into a world of deep reflection to explore a childhood comprised of complex heritage, persecution, and the development of counter-cultural values. A childhood weighted by trauma yet filled with hope for the possibilities.

This book follows a family’s path that is fraught with terrible danger, targeted by Saddam Hussein’s sadistic regime. They spend years pursuing sanctuary, which seems impossible to find, even as their fate begins to change course on what they believe to be the eve of their execution.

This memoir is so compelling that it will inspire you to examine what you know and believe. A story that will encourage you to find a way to press on even when all hope seems lost.

Assyrian Family Escapes Death Under Saddam

Assyrian (same people the prophet Jonah preached to) Christians have lived in Iraq since the Apostle Thomas evangelized there in the first century. Ramina uses her superb writing skills to tell what life was like as Assyrians living under the oppression of Saddam Hussein. Her family lived under the threat of death for years, running to several countries, but never out-running threats of death, until delivered, along with a majority of Kurds, to the U.S. via Guam. Intrigue and suspense undergird this factual accounting of God's miraculous guidance through every threat. Ramina tells of visions and dreams that keep reminding her that God holds them in the palm of His hand. As a military chaplain I worked with Ramina and her family every day for three months in 1997. They are the definition of sincerity, graciousness and integrity. I count them among my closest friends in this life. Reading this book was truly thrilling and inspirational. I heartily recommend it to teens and adults in all walks of life.

I'm not typically one to sit down long enough to read a book cover to cover, but this story had me captivated and intrigued from the moment I scanned the first page. Ramina is a talented writer who beautifully illustrates her family's story of heartache and triumph in this book. Each word is honest and heartfelt, drawing the reader in to experience the story rather than just read about it. It's an emotional read, but by the end I found myself feeling humbled, inspired, and grateful. This gripping story of family and faith is a true testament that miracles do happen!

This was truly an amazing story, and it brought me to tears a few times. I am fortunate to have met Ramina; her sisters, Sona and Rodina, live across the street, and I've met the entire family. They are such wonderful people!
Their faith has carried them through many dark years. They were truly blessed, and I have to say that everyone who knows them is blessed as well.
I highly recommend this book. You'll be glad you read it!
