Shin looks like an ordinary high school boy, but he has a terrible secret: an alien parasite has infected his body. This mysterious creature is ruthless, deadly, and utterly indifferent to human suffering...and it is beginning to assert itself over Shin. As Shinji fights for control of his body, can he also hold on to his humanity?
Hitoshi Iwaaki (Japanese: 岩明均 Hepburn: Iwaaki Hitoshi, born July 28, 1960) is a Japanese manga artist, whose works include the science-fiction/horror series Parasyte. The Mixx editions of Parasyte romanize his name as "Hitosi Iwaaki", while the Del Rey Manga editions use "Hitoshi Iwaaki".
In 1993, he received the Kodansha Manga Award for Parasyte. He was a finalist for the 2005 Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Grand Prize for Historie. In 2010 Historie took the grand prize in the manga division of the 2010 Japan Media Arts Festival.
Main protagonist Shinichi Izumi is a rarity in that when a Parasyte (Migi) attacked him they ended up in a symbiotic relationship, unlike most other victims whose brains were overtaken. In this second volume the impact on both, because of their symbiosis is drawn out. The big story is what happens when a Parasyte goes after someone close to Shinichi Izumi! This one is bubbling along nicely, and despite me giving it just Two Stars (5 out of 12) I am very much dug-in, this has a lot of obvious potential and I am loving some of the over-the-top off key behaviour of some of the leading cast. 2025 read
Man, that went dark. It was really good though. I read this cover to cover in one sitting. I stayed interested and on the edge of my seat the whole time. They managed to distract from the darkness with info, humor, and friendship to keep it similar to the first one, but it was dark nonetheless. I really enjoyed this volume and am really looking forward to Vol. 3!
In volume 2, Shinichi faces a heartbreaking situation where he loses his mother to a parasite.
The story becomes even more intriguing as the parasite in Shinichi's body can protect and heal vital areas.
At the end of this volume, there is an interesting Q&A session where the author seems to be inspired by Terminator 2, since this manga was released in the early '90s.
A lot happened in this volume—unexpected disaster that destroyed, although not completely, Shinichi's family, newfound ally, and more girls interested in him. I don't know if I'm just getting used to all these kinds of splatter reads, or this one's just really beautifully drawn. Anyway, I just adore the art style so much.
That was SO much darker than the first volume holy shit, left me a bit winded on the train lol Parasyte makes me think it’s manga’s equivalent of the marvel comics Venom but darker and with more horror elements! I wish more volumes were available on KU beyond the first two! Hopefully they will be added 🤞
This got a bit darker than the first one. Shinji faced such a heartbreaking situation. And now he is really changing physically and mentally, becoming more violent and strong. I liked his boyish side, let's see how his manly side will be. I can't say that I liked the artstyle, but I can't do anything about it either. It seems I have spoiled myself with beautiful artworks of first mangas of mine.
I seem to be in the middle of several long and dense books so I was after some light relief...
...Look no further than Parasyte 2! - the second in the series and even more enjoyable than the first as the story makes more sense and becomes clearer.
Super quick, funny, creative and thoroughly enjoyable.
this volume took a darker turn cause of that whole situation with Shinichi’s parents and i loved it. the different way the parasites control their hosts’ body is just so interesting. the new characters introduced were fun and I’m curious to see how Shinichi’s character will continue to change in the future as he tries to hold onto his humanity. this series has a lot of potential to became a new favorite for me fr!
Few Manga's really grab me in like this. The sense of different layers throughout. Trying to understand all the different themes of what it truly means to be human are amazing with funny moments and well established characters. Great stuff and can't wait to continue this wonderful, and through-provoking, series.
Volume 2 of Parasyte kicks things into high gear. Shinichi is trying his best to adapt to a life of sharing his body with a cannibalistic alien parasyte that has taken control of his right hand. It’s difficult to maintain control and his mental state is slowly growing more insect-like as he spends more time with his coldblooded companion. Shin is managing well until a host of parasytes begin to threaten his family and his peers within his social circles. Will he cave into the pressure, or will he be forced to adapt to the more ruthless ways of his parasitic friend?
Shin undergoes a tremendous level of character development in the second volume as he’s confronted with nonstop horrors, social pressure and familial danger. The side characters also play a more active role in upping the stakes and making the presence of the growing number of parasytes feel much more threatening. On his path to confronting the dangerous creature that resembles his mother, he befriends a student that makes him question the changes going on in his head and an unlikely companion that shares the same struggles as him. The volume ends on a very emotional climax, promising a difficult future for our struggling protagonist.
This is where the series takes a more serious turn and begins to touch upon the more philosophical elements of human nature in the face of great darkness.
Parasyte: Vol. 2 My Rating: 4.7/5

Shin's still getting used to sharing his body with an alien parasite named Migi, who is part of a silent invasion to occupy humans and eat mankind. Migi has become docile with Shin, he wants to learn more about this race, and can also sense when others of his kind are nearby. When Shin's parents decide to go on a holiday, they leave their son at home who is thankful for the space to deal with the changes in his life but when he receives a phone call from his dad who says his mum has been killed by a monster, and then she shows up in his house, he knows exactly what has happened. A parasite has taken over his mother's brain and is seeking out his father, in the process, injuring Shin and Migi steps in to heal his body, making him 30% more parasite than before. Shin then finds his father is a hospital miles away and vows to protect him from his mother. It's in this small seaside town he learns all about what becoming more parasite means for him physically and mentally and he discovers he isn't the only failed parasite takeover.
This volume crammed in a lot, and yet it felt like it flowed very well throughout. I really grew to like Shin in this book, and I wonder what the new side characters will bring to this series in future volumes. Shin shows a lot of determination in this book and while this volume is more emotional than the first, it didn't ruin my enjoyment of the book at all.
This volume expands a little, as we see other human/parasyte hybrids, including a guy with a Parasyte jaw. There's also a pretty dark happening with a major character.
The whole talking hand thing turned me off in the first volume, but in this volume I do admit it started to grow on me. Er, no pun intended? The whole human/parasyte as a team is sorta neat when the human side makes the pair more altruistic.
In any case this is a pretty decent read but I doubt I continue with the series anytime soon. In the future though, I may get back to it.
Główny bohater to mój crush!
4/5 Well the stakes were raised significantly in volume 2 as Shinichi's parents are attacked by Parasyte's while on vacation. Shinichi himself is attacked again forcing Shinichi to bond with Migi even more. This also is the start of some evolution that Shinichi is going through himself due to Migi's presence.
We're also introduced to another character with a failed Parasyte just like Shinichi.
More brutal than the last volume I really enjoyed volume 2.
i’ve seen the anime version of parasyte already, but it’s always refreshing to see how the manga plays out!! glad to see the anime kept things pretty similar to the manga!
