One shameful act can haunt you for a lifetime. Or maybe longer…
1928: Socialite Olivia Pumphrey Hunt enjoyed every pleasure the Jazz Age had to offer. So when she’s found dead after a wild party, few are surprised. Except Olivia, when she “awakens” to find her lifeless body splayed open on an autopsy table. Trapped in a silent world between the living and the dead, her unsettled spirit is nonetheless determined to uncover the truth behind her mysterious death. But to do so, she’ll need help. For the medical examiner, Dr. Van der Voort, the graveside exhumation and autopsy of the notorious socialite was supposed to be a routine task he could wash away with carbolic soap and a few fingers of whiskey at the end of the day. But when he opens Olivia’s casket, he realizes this will be no ordinary case.
2018: Deep inside a secure vault, cyber archivist Jude Walker discovers a photo of Olivia that ignites a dangerous curiosity. Troubled by Olivia’s close resemblance to her own dead sister, Jude uncovers bizarre similarities in the lives and deaths of the two women. But digging into Olivia’s cold case could tear open her own family’s dark secrets.
From the dawn of forensic science to the cutting edge of modern technology, three lives intertwine in a quest for answers as well as absolution.
I so enjoyed this book. L.R. Trovillion is a master at giving us multiple plot lines that come together smashingly in the end. I loved this cast of characters, especially Olivia. Her story was so compelling. And the ending was perfect! Can't wait to read the next one!
What good writing! Even though it's a "ghost" story, I felt I was in the plot myself, one of the characters. A good plot, lots of unexpected corners, and kudos to the author for being able to move ahead and back 80 years without driving the reader crazy.
This was an amazing mystery story. Even though it’s a ghost story I still felt like I was a part of the story. The plot was mind boggling and I couldn’t put it down. I loved how the author was able to move back and forth 80 years without driving the reader mad
Good story telling and characters. The frustration for me was the poor editing.... missing words, simple mistakes like HE when it should be HIS, etc. But the story line was interesting and the twists were clever.
Expected a typical mystery but this book was totally different and a surprise! Usually do not care for stories that slip back and forth between time, but this was an exception. A bit of, no more than a bit of paranormal throughout a really engaging and enjoyable read.
L. R. Trovillion has penned a captivating mystery that spans two different timelines. The plot revolves around three characters: the ghostly being of Olivia Pumphrey Hunt, who as a wealthy socialite, died under mysterious circumstances in 1928, Dr. Harold Van der Voort, assigned to perform her autopsy, and Jude Walker, a 2018 cyber archivist. After discovering a photograph of Olivia, Jude becomes obsessed with the 1920s socialite, attempting to uncover her story, since Olivia bears a striking resemblance to her deceased sister. The author seamlessly weaves the lives of these three characters into a suspenseful tale of hidden secrets as the decades-old mystery unravels. If you're a mystery fan, be sure to place A DEATH OF CONVENIENCE at the top of your 2024 reading list!
