Humorous illustrations in glowing colors help tell the story of a king who dreams about a bird singing in a tree and the royal birdcatcher who must capture the songster
I read the German language edition of the book. Glorious water colour illustrations on each page. The book is a superb resource for teaching German because of its regular and repetitive structure (a poem in fact), its exemplification of tenses, the use of genitive endings and the gender of various species of bird. It also teaches about ecology, with each bird dwelling in a unique environmental niche and possessing its own characteristic song. It might also teach children to be wary of despotic monarchs.
This was one of my favorite books as a child. The illustrations are hauntingly beautiful, and the story is fascinating for young children. If you can find a copy of it, grab it!
