Bob Dylan was recently named by Life as one of the 100 most important Americans of the 20th century. In this photographic tour of Dylan’s breakthrough years, 1964 to 1965, Daniel Kramer shows the human side of this legendary figure — playing chess, making coffee, and in one whimsical moment, sitting in a tree — and also in the studio and onstage. An essay by the photographer sheds further light on the man and his music.
The Institute of Dylanology has just published their revised research on the following questions which will be of great interest to all Dylan fans. Let’s get right to it.
How many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man?
Current estimate is : 735
How many seas must a white dove sail before she sleeps in the sand?
6 in winter, only 3 in summer, depending on tidal conditions
How many times must the cannonballs fly before they’re forever banned?
Two answers to this : 1) Zero, because it’s a trick question – no one uses cannonballs anymore. 2) Assuming this question is a more general one, relating to all types of ordnance : 237, 500 approximately.
How many years can a mountain exist before it’s washed to the sea?
On average, 15.5 million years.
How many years can some people exist before they’re allowed to be free?
This of course depends on the people and under what jurisdiction they have been incarcerated. The researchers could not attempt a response here, stating that further specifics were required.
How many times can a man turn his head, pretending he just doesn’t see?
Between 7 and 4,900
How many times must a man look up before he can see the sky?
Again, the researchers stated that there were too many possible variables here. For a person with 20/20 vision who was unimpaired by foliage or buildings, then the answer is clearly one. But in certain circumstances, the figure could rise to as high as 2,873.
How many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry?
Just one, so long as it is a functioning ear.
How many deaths will it take till he knows that too many people have died?
Again, it is difficult to be definitive. Current best guesstimates of the total number of people who have ever lived is around 108 billion, so a generous-minded individual might say that let’s say one person in a hundred is a worthless scumbag who doesn’t deserve to live, and deducting the current 7 billion who are alive now, this leaves nearly 100 billion who arguably shouldn’t have died. But with the best will in the world, it’s hard to know how the planet could be sustainable with a population that size. The researchers took a practical view of this topic and suggested that the questioner might think that too many people have died but ecologically speaking not enough people have died.
Kramer was the photographer of the iconic LP covers for Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited; this book collects most of his early photos of Dylan, usually posed with occasional attempts at something more candid along with an explanation of both notions in the text. He was a witness to the recording session for “Maggie’s Farm” and his text account of it is valuable, but most of the book is just pictures; again, it’s worth a browse, but nothing that’s going to rattle your bones.
Iconic images, demonstrating that Dylan influenced his generation not only by his words and music, but also by his visual style. Sympathetically captured.
