The Affair #2

The Consequences

Rate this book
The end of an affair may be only the beginning . . . Over the course of one tumultuous Christmas Eve, Kathy Walker confirmed her suspicions about her husband's affair, confronted his mistress, Stephanie, and saved her marriage. She and Robert have eighteen years, two teenagers, and a film production business between them--plus a bond that Kathy has no intention of giving up on. Yet though Robert is contrite, Kathy can't quite silence her doubts. While Robert reels from his wife's ultimatum and his mistress's rejection, Stephanie makes a discovery: she's pregnant. Her resolve to stay away from Robert wavers now that they could make a real family together. And in the days that follow, Stephanie, Robert, and Kathy must each reckon with the intricate realities of desire, the repercussions of betrayal, and the secrets that, once revealed, ripple through lives and relationships in thoroughly unexpected ways.

Infidelity is a favorite trope of mine, and I'm glad I listened to this sequel to The Affair. As other reviewers have noted, the three POVs were interesting, but were also quite repetitive at times; I find that writing strategy less effective if new information doesn't come to light. To that end, I enjoyed the three perspectives when new information that enriched the story was presented, but rehashing some of the seminal events step-by-step was a bit tedious. Nonetheless, I was glad to hear the whole story of the three folks involved in the affair, and my opinions of at least two of the main characters changed over the course of the story. The wife (h) seemed to grow quite a bit, and the mistress seemed just a tiny bit more sympathetic to me, although c'mon. She was still the OW. The H remained a cad throughout and I thoroughly enjoyed his comeuppance at the end, while simultaneously being fairly dissatisfied with the too-neat-package of the end of the story. Scorned wives and pregnant OW don't tend to walk away together into the sunset leaving the cheater H to wonder where both of his babes went. But if you have a similar interest in this trope and haven't read this yet, it is a worthwhile way to spend several hours!

Three stars is a stretch for me on this one, but since most of it was okay and decent, I'll be generous. It was somewhat of a wrap-up of The Affair, although it actually created more questions than it answered. The ending, however, was a complete and total cop-out, and ruined the rest of the book for me.

WOW.....This was a riveting and compelling story told from three very different perspectives. I was skeptical about reading the same scenario three times, but since this came so highly rated, I decided to give it a try. I could not put this book down. I was fascinated to read the same scene over & over again, yet walk away with a very different perspective based on who was telling it. Lesson learned: What looks to be so simple and clear cut, can be anything but.

It finished with a little bit of a twist that I didn't see coming, which added even more impact to an already great story.

I highly recommend this one, but beware this it not a love story or a romance. It's just a mesmerizing story about the consequences of an affair on the lives of the mistress, wife and unfaithful husband.

Stephanie and Robert were in love, had been dating for the last eighteen months and he had just proposed. Robert, though, has been married to Kathy for almost twenty years (they have two children) but was planning on leaving his wife over the Christmas holidays. Kathy found out about the affair and confronted Stephanie about it on Christmas Eve when Robert arrived. Stephanie realized that contrary to what Robert had told her, Kathy still loved Robert and that Robert still loved his wife ... so she gave Robert up so the Walkers could fix their marriage. That is what prequel, "The Affair", was about and how it ended. The Consequence picks up right after Kathy and Robert have left Stephanie's home.

This book has an interesting concept ... it's written from three points of view (Stephanie's, Kathy's and Robert's) about the things that happen following Kathy's confrontation ... so we read about the same incident sometimes three times from each of their perspectives.

Not wanting to spend Christmas alone, Stephanie heads to her family in Wisconsin for the holidays. There she realizes that she is pregnant. She immediately heads back home so she can deal with it with Robert.

Kathy is willing to try to make things work with Robert but she has him promise that he'll never have any contact with Stephanie again. She's trying to give him the benefit of the doubt when he disappears to "the office" or gets phone calls from "friends".

Robert has a dilemma ... he loves both women and isn't sure which one he wants. Stephanie makes him feel young again but he has a longer history with Kathy. Life gets even more stressed when Stephanie tells him she's pregnant and his best friend dies.

Though this is a sequel, it works as a stand alone (I hadn't read "The Affair" but I'd like to now). It was an interesting technique to tell the same story from three different perspectives and it worked for me. I liked the writing style. I thought it flowed well and kept me wanting to read more. Plus I thought it was an interesting story.

Because of the structure of the book, you really get to know the characters and what they are thinking and feeling. Stephanie hadn't been looking to have an affair with a married man but Robert had told her that Kathy didn't love him anymore and they would soon have a life together. Once she realized the true situation, she did the right thing and gave Robert back to Kathy. Kathy could understand why Robert had the affair and was willing to work it out since things had once been good between them and they had built a life together. I thought Robert was an A-hole. Even though he had gotten himself in this situation and had hurt two women, he was still more concerned about himself.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it. I look forward to reading others by this author.

3.5 stars. Better than expected. The second book in a two book series. This one started with the mistress’s story then the husband’s and then the wife’s. Some of it was as expected but still an interesting read.

I just finished reading both The Affair and its sequel The Consequences.

The Consequences is the stronger book. (Freedman spends much of The Affair developing her characters. By the time The Consequences opens, they are well-developed and intriguing and the story can really take off.)

If I had been editing these books, I would have considered
- combining the two books into a single novel;
- finding a way to reduce the repetition that occurs when the same story has to be told from the viewpoint of three different characters. (The repetition becomes particularly jarring/annoying when the same snippets of dialogue are repeated again -- and again -- and again.)

3 stars for The Affair
4 stars for The Consequences -- because the ending is so satisfying.

EVEN BETTER THAN THE AFFAIR!
I was a big fan of Freedman's The Affair. I was drawn in by the cover and read it in two days. The Consequences begins five minutes after The Affair ends. Even though it works as a stand alone book, I appreciated the backstory of the three characters which was revealed in the previous book. This takes the trio's dilemmas to the next level as their collective worlds unravel. I identified most with Kathy and glad she was able to finally see through Robert's web of deceit. Both my investment in the character as well as the hanging ending definitely makes me want to continue the journey with these characters a few years down the road to discover what happens to them.

When the End is Really just the beginning

A huge fan of Freedman's The Affair, I read this the day it arrived. Fast paced and compelling, it continues Robert, Kathy and Stephanie's story (although it works as a stand alone novel as well). I will not spoil the ending, but it is a wonderful surprise...not exactly what one would expect in a book like this. The ancillary characters remained strong and the story did not disappoint.

If you are curious to know what happens with Kathy and Robert Walker and Stephanie Burroughs after The Affair ends, then you won't want to miss Colette Freedman's dramatic sequel, The Consequences. The cataclysmic confrontation between the three ended with Robert choosing to stay with Kathy but what effect will Stephanie's shocking news have his decision?

As with The Affair, The Consequences is told from each of the key participants' perspectives of the same events and time period. Again, I found this approach unique and compelling and I appreciated the insight into each of the characters. My respect for Stephanie and Kathy grew and while I felt sympathy for Robert's unexpected loss, on the whole, I eventually lost what respect I had for him.

The story opens from Stephanie's point of view as she is about to fly to her parents' for Christmas. She is still in love with Robert, but she is determined to stay away from him and try to repair her damaged career. She is shocked to learn she is pregnant and while she does not want to get back together with Robert, she knows she needs to share her news with him.

Although Robert has chosen to stay with Kathy, he still has feeling for Stephanie. He is concerned for her and early in the book, he makes a decision that eventually comes back to haunt him. I was touched by his concern for a close friend, and the emotions he feels are genuine. But when it comes to his relationship with Stephanie, I think we see the real Robert and the picture is not pretty.

For her part, Kathy knows that saving her marriage is going to take hard work and trust. She gives Robert the benefit of the doubt time and again despite the misgivings his behavior arouses. She deliberately avoids searching for evidence that he is lying to her and although it is difficult, she avoids confronting Robert with her suspicions. Again, she takes full responsibility for her role in the breakdown of the marriage and she continues to believe they have a good chance at repairing their relationship.

Once again, The Consequences builds to another spectacular confrontation and I was absolutely stunned at the novel's conclusions. Will Colette Freedman give us yet another peek into Robert, Stephanie and Kathy's lives? I hope so, but if not, I am very satisfied with the resolution of their complicated, yet incredibly fascinating, relationship.

_The Consequences_ (The Affair, #2) (2014) by Colette Freedman

I discovered this book in an online ad at the Goodreads site. The plot description sounds very interesting. The "three different perspectives" should make it even more interesting.

Book Description: "Colette Freedman explores the aftermath of infidelity from three different perspectives--husband, wife, and mistress."

The description says that this book is a follow-up to her acclaimed debut novel : The Affair (The Affair, #1) (2013)

The story drew me in and compelled me to finish it. (That pertains to both books, #1 and #2). However, the repetition was annoying for two reasons:
1. The second book had to summarize the first book as it went along.
2. Things had to be repeated because the same story is told from 3 points of view.

PS-Below is a link to an online sample from the first chapter of _The Consequences_:

There is nothing more gratifying than reading a book about winter, in the winter, while curled up in a ball and super warm. The details in this book were so specific and attractive to me that I started drinking tea just to fit in with the main characters. I just finished reading 1Q84 by the masterful Murakami, which also uses the changing point of view format and was really impressed with how craftily Freedman worked with this style--it stands up against the greats! Overall the book was a fast, realistic, entertaining, and interesting read--BUT, it also moved me one more notch toward losing my faith in the idea of long term/permanent relationships (I'm sorry to admit). Congrats to Freedman on yet another excellent addition to her ever growing body of work!

I was let down by this book. I loved The Affair, and thought it did a great job of telling the story and making me sympathetic to all three main characters. I couldn't wait to read the sequel. Although I don't defend Robert's affair, I feel that Freedman stepped away from the idea that they were all somewhat culpable in the Affair. In The Consequences, Freedman demonized Robert, to the point where I felt why would either one of these smart women be so in love with him. I thought by placing Robert in the role of villain, the complexity of the story was abandoned. I can only think that was to increase the drama of the consequences. Despite that, the book was very interesting. I would have given it 3 stars, except for the ending, which was rushed, and totally unrealistic.

There are three points of view in an affair. The Consequences, by Colette Freedman takes place just after the confrontation of an affair. It is the sequel to her book The Affair. What happens after the confrontation? After all is revealed? The Consequences does an excellent job of engaging the reader in the emotions of all three involved: the mistress, the husband, and the wife. I enjoyed this book as much as the first one and I feel as if I know these characters and yet, I didn't anticipate the ending. Ms. Freedman really captures the ups and downs of a relationship. I read this book in about two days. It was a page turner.

The end of Freedman's "The Affair" was a strong, satisfying, credible twist. But real life continues, even after emotionally satisfying events. So it was a brilliant idea to follow up with this continuation of the lives of wife, Kathy, mistress, Stephanie, and husband, Robert. It's messy, complicated and decisions that feel clear and right can become murky in the light of new information. As always, Freedman's writing is fluid and entertaining. A strong partner to the original novel.

What a wonderful follow-up to "The Affair". I wish I could be so eloquent as the other reviewers; this novel deserves it. How wonderful it is to follow ALL three in this triangle of love. Too often one of the participants is ignored or slandered... Freedman's story is so much more complex. The only problem: I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!

This review is for the duet. Well written- repetitive, but I did appreciate the same story from 3 POVs. I think it ended how it should have. Hero was a buffoon; probably not always a compulsive liar, but he certainly became one. Very realistic. Typical affair that started as a result of a stale marriage and mid-life crisis.

This story was told from three different perspectives. I usually like this type of novel but I couldn’t wait for this story to be over. It went over every single scene and piece of dialogue from the three perspectives, I had to read the exact same story three times. This was absolutely tedious.

This story is the sequel that sheds light on what happened with Kathy and Robert Walker and Stephanie Burroughs after The Affair ends. Colette Freedman's prior story was told from three points of view, the Husband, the Wife and the Mistress. The book culminated in a pivotal confrontation that led to Robert returning to his wife. That story was heart-wrenching and beautiful and I always wondered what happened after their worlds were blown apart. The Consequences pulls back that curtain and again tells the story from each participant's point of view. This was a poignant and thoughtful book on what it means to be married, what is the personal responsibility of someone when an affair happens, how do you separate love from lust and the desire to recapture your youth and how to you move forward in a way that is truly healthy and best for your well-being. In both books, I felt a lot of empathy for the mistress, which is odd because I have been happily married for almost seven years. I even felt bad for the husband in the first story and it was the wife I couldn't connect with. In this current story, my admiration for the mistress only grew as we get to see a more personal, softer side of her, once she is removed from the orbit of Robert. I also grew to admire Kathy's strength and courage to confront such a painful experience. Robert truly lost me in this book. I loved how the story unfolded and I truly found the ending to be fitting and satisfying. I was sad to say good-bye to these characters...a hint to the author...I would love to see a follow-up in 10 or 15 years to see how everything is going. I highly recommend reading the first book before reading this one to capture the over-arching story and fully connect with these individuals in their defining moments.

I was a Goodreads First Read winner and so glad to have won this book! I love how the author tells the story from all three perspectives, as she did in the prequel "The Affair". This story picks up where "The Affair" left off after the truth is out and where the characters go from there. SPOILERS follow. After reading this I find Robert to be an a-hole, not only for cheating on his wife, but continuing to lie to her and Stephanie and also suggesting Stephanie to have an abortion in attempt to brush everything under the rug and move on as though none of it had happened. I kind of hope to think in the end that he ended up with nothing, no business, no wife, no mistress and his children not seeing him the way they always had. Maybe that's a little harsh, but he just kept a web of lies and continued to allow them to grow. I was surprised in the end when the two women begin to discuss the possibility of going into business together, that takes some courage to want to work with your man's other significant other, but it also shows how adult they both are about the situation and the fact that Kathy is willing to help Stephanie raise the child. That was all definitely unexpected and a good turn for the story. This story shows just how much damage an affair can do to not just the three people involved but their friends, family and other relationships. I hope the author continues to publish more novels. The two I've read so far I have highly recommended to others.

This is the sequel to "The Affair", also written by this author. As the title indicates, this follows the Other Woman, Wife and Husband in the aftermath of D-Day when the affair was revealed. The story focuses primarily on the OW's life. The author uses the same technique she did in her first book to show the same incident from the point of view of all three characters. It adds unnecessary bloat to the story and feels like the reader is robbed of a meaningful plot. If you've read The Affair, you should read this because the conclusion is quite satisfying and surprising. Infidelity is never a pleasant or easy topic to read about, but overall this author managed to capture the emotions of all the people in the complicated triangle.

I liked this book so much that I'm actually hoping that there is a third one in progress now. It is true that when there is an affair, there are three sides to the story. It seems that Ms. Freedman has done a tremendous amount of research to enable us to see what each party is thinking and feeling. Obviously, the wife is hurt, but yet so is the mistress. I've even gained some insight into what the husband may be thinking and feeling. Does that mean I now understand my ex-husband? Not at all. But, I really did enjoy this book and would love to hear more about the next ventures of all three characters. Well done, Ms. Freedman, well done.

The Sequel is even better than the original. Taking place minutes after The Affair ended, Freedman delves into the titular issue of what happens when an affair is revealed. The Mistresses section was my favorite as I felt like I got to know a much softer side of Stephanie, seeing her at home with her family in Wisconsin. Her relationship with her father was so honest, it made me wonder why she would seek out someone like Robert in the first place. Robert definitely gets his comeuppance and I love the wife's arc as she finally starts seeing her husband through his web of lies. Also, it has possibly one of the best endings ever!

I know I said I wasn't going to refer to books as beautiful anymore, but this is a beautiful, heart-wrenching examination of the consequences of an affair. It's a follow-up to The Affair, which I did not read. This book still makes sense, but I'm absolutely going back and reading the first one. It's subtle and emotional. I laughed and cried and generally felt all emotions while reading this book. It's perfect for book clubs or just if you want to read something that excellently portrays the human condition. I loved it.

This is the second half of the story of The Affair. The story just continues from the first novel. It's amazing that the story (both books) takes place over the course of only about a week! Wow.

I am glad that the author is real in how this sort of situation can, and often does, end. Three lives are shattered (five, when you include the children) due to one man's inability to control his physical urges. The husband, Robert, justifies his stupid actions throughout the whole process. He is a spineless, immoral weasel and I am soooo thankful he lost them BOTH at the end! What an idiot.

The Consequences picks up hours after The Affair ends. In the book, we again witness everything through the eyes of all three involved. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. In fact, I might have even enjoyed it more than the first. The conclusion is very satisfying. Everything is wrapped up and yet, one can see the possibility of a third book. I would recommend reading The Affair first; however, as it provides all the background information for The Consequences.

Great follow up to "The Affair" - "The Consequences" is insightful, beautiful, grounded in real relationships, both tragic and hopeful. I read it in a couple of days, couldn't put it down. Worthwhile on many levels: besides being a fast, fun read, hearing the story from different perspectives really got me thinking outside of myself. It also made me ponder my values, my priorities, my relationships. Definitely check it out!

I read The Affair and of course I had toe read the sequel The Consequences. Both books are told in the wife’s, the mistresses and the husbands POV in 3 separate parts. That’s interesting but you do read the same thing 2 or 3 times. I will be honest in the second book I skipped to the end of book 2 to see how it ended. It was too painful hearing the husband think and talk to the mistress. So I hope you enjoy if you like this kind of torture. Book one was better.
The writing is good :)

I said I wouldn't read anymore books by this author but I did. I think the second book was even worse than the first. But I had to know what happened. This book is just so repetitive it's so long and drawn out. It not only repeats what is happening now but what happened in the first book The Affair. Ok I really mean it this time no more books by this author. Lol!
