Intresting novel..

One can detect who is involved in the murder after 120+ pages, but one has to read until the end to know why he murdered those people and what prompted him to do those things.

I wish Prasun Roy had given a happy ending to Arun, but he didn't. If he had given it, that would have been a great thing, but things are not like that.

This was a taut read. But it had numerous factual and procedural inaccuracies. More importantly, while upping the emotional content, author had completely failed to use the backdrop of Durga Puja.
Poor writing, but the thought was good enough for a single read.

Murder mysteries frequently center on themes of unrequited love or justice that remains elusive. It's uncommon to find books in this genre that tackle pressing social issues while maintaining the story's suspense and thrill.

Kolkata was abuzz, preparing for the biggest event of the year—Durga Puja. Commissioner Chauhan was particularly anxious, knowing that Durgacharan Mahesh, a high-profile fugitive, would be in the city for three days for a court hearing. As Chauhan and his team meticulously ensured everything was in order, news broke of the murder of the city's famous builder, Vasudev Patel. Beside his lifeless body, the word 'Devi' was scrawled in blood.

This murder set off a chain of alarming events: a 260-year-old conch was stolen, three bank security guards were found murdered, and a series of additional murders followed. The murder weapons bore a striking resemblance to the weapons of Devi Durga. Though these incidents appeared disconnected, they all shared a chilling commonality—the word 'DEVI.'

The police scrambled to decipher the motive behind these murders and the invisible thread linking them to Devi.

Meanwhile, the city was gripped with fear and speculation. Every corner of Kolkata buzzed with rumors, and the festive atmosphere of Durga Puja was tainted by an undercurrent of dread. Commissioner Chauhan felt the weight of the city's safety on his shoulders. He called in his best detectives and forensic experts, forming a special task force dedicated to solving the mystery.

The author has meticulously developed each character in the book, making them more realistic and adding depth to the story. Every crime unveils new facets of the investigation and the perpetrator. The characters of Arun, Jai, and Savitri establish a profound emotional connection with readers. They vividly convey the stress, emotional turmoil, and fear these characters endure, allowing readers to empathize deeply with their experiences.

Arun, a seasoned detective, grapples with the weight of past failures while striving for justice. Jai, a rookie officer, brings fresh perspectives but faces the harsh realities of law enforcement. Savitri, a determined journalist, balances her quest for truth with personal struggles. Their experiences vividly convey the stress, emotional turmoil, and fear they endure, allowing readers to empathize deeply with their journeys. Through their interactions and personal growth, the story explores themes of resilience, duty, and the human spirit's capacity to overcome darkness.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of Kolkata's Durga Puja celebrations, the events of the book unfold with each crime occurring on a specific day of the festival, creating an eerie connection with the auspicious festivities. The plot's numerous twists will keep the readers on the edge of their seats until the very end. The author masterfully exposes the darkness lurking within Kolkata’s underworld and the intricate workings of the police department.

This book deserves five stars and is a must-read for all thriller lovers for several compelling reasons. First, the author masterfully weaves a gripping narrative that intertwines the festive vibrancy of Kolkata's Durga Puja with a series of chilling murders, creating an atmosphere that is both suspenseful and richly immersive. Each crime, meticulously timed with the festival's key days, adds a layer of eerie connection to the sacred celebrations, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

Furthermore, the plot is packed with unexpected twists and turns, ensuring that the suspense never wanes. The intricate storyline delves into the dark underbelly of Kolkata’s underworld while simultaneously showcasing the inner workings of the police department, providing a realistic and engrossing backdrop to the mystery.

The characters are exceptionally well-developed, each contributing to the depth and emotional resonance of the story. Arun, Jai, and Savitri, among others, are not just figures in a crime story but are portrayed with such realism that readers can deeply empathize with their struggles, fears, and growth. This emotional connection enriches the reading experience, making it more than just a thriller but a compelling exploration of human resilience and morality.

Finally, the author’s ability to reveal the hidden darkness within the city while maintaining a pulse-pounding pace makes this book an unforgettable read. It offers a perfect blend of cultural richness, psychological depth, and thrilling suspense, making it a standout in the genre. This book is not just a read but an experience, demanding the attention and admiration of all thriller enthusiasts.

A decent story but the writing leaves much to be desired. Dialogues amongst the characters could have been more taut. That would help in upholding the tension and professionalism in such a mystery thriller. These things would hopefully improve with the author's next offerings.

It does pick up once you are almost half-way into the book though the backdrop of Durga Puja could have been utilised much more. Overall, a good one-time read.

Durga Puja vibes are at an all-time high, but the city of Kolkata is in for more than just festive fervor. Meet a fugitive business tycoon Durgacharan Mahesh, making a dramatic entrance from Spain to face trial in the midst of Puja preparations. Lights are sparkling, the city's decked out for the Goddess, and Commissioner Chauhan's police force is on high alert! Despite all precautions and preparations, a string of murders and crimes unfolds. It kicks off with the mysterious demise of Durgacharan's brother-in-law, Vasudev Patel, wielding a Devi astra and the word 'Devi' scrawled in blood.

Inspector Arun Palit is a top-notch detective with a tainted past, suspended for unethical behavior. Yet, he's oddly linked to the murders, receiving cryptic warnings. His estranged police friend Jai is knee-deep in the investigation, and there's Savitri, a reporter with an unrequited love for Arun, thrown into the mix As the days of Pujo unfold, the crimes escalate, and 'Devi' takes matters into her own hands, doling out a peculiar form of justice.

On Mahachaturthi, a precious jewel-studded conch belonging to a 260-year-old Durga idol gets stolen. On the subsequent days, more bodies emerge with a host of clues, prompting the police commissioner to launch an investigation along with his best men. The victims harbor dark secrets. What seems like random acts of violence gradually unravels into a sinister connection!

Sure, I had some predictions early on, but the way the story unfolds is nothing short of dramatic and thoroughly enthralling. The exploration of social issues and the revenge angle peels back the layers of society, exposing its true and sometimes ugly face. And the reminder that money is a potent catalyst is well-established. All in all, a great blend that would make for a run-away hit on the big screens.

The emotional rollercoaster, the closure, and the vivid depiction of city life during the festivities add an extra layer of fun to this mystery. Everything and everyone in this story is set out to jolt you out of your mundane reveries and give your a literary experience like no other. Long after the book is finished, you'll find yourself grappling for sanity reeling from the events of Durga Puja and the notorious crimes engulfing the city of Kolkata.

"Devi" is a riveting crime thriller that weaves a captivating narrative against the backdrop of Kolkata's grand Durga Puja festival. The author, masterfully combines the rich cultural tapestry of the city with an intricate and suspenseful murder mystery that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

The story kicks off with the arrival of fugitive business tycoon Durgacharan Mahesh in Kolkata, en route to Mumbai, but it takes a dark turn with the gruesome murder of his brother-in-law, Vasudeva Patel, and the enigmatic message "DEVI" scrawled in blood beside the body. This chilling introduction sets the stage for a series of baffling and brutal crimes that coincide with each day of Durga Puja, creating an atmosphere of suspense and intrigue.

One of the strongest aspects of the novel is the author's skillful characterization. The victims are connected by dark secrets that are gradually unveiled as the story progresses. Each character is well-developed, adding depth to the narrative and making it easy for readers to become emotionally invested in their fates. The character of the police commissioner and his team adds an additional layer of depth to the story.

The murder weapons and the cryptic messages left behind are another layer of the mystery that keeps the readers hooked. The author's clever use of these elements ties the crimes together in a way that is both perplexing and ingenious. As the investigation unfolds, the twists and turns in the case are brilliantly executed, leaving the reader with a sense of constant anticipation and surprise.

A standout feature of it is its strong sense of place. The author's vivid descriptions of Kolkata during Durga Puja immerse the reader in the heart of the festivities and the city's vibrant culture. This setting not only serves as a backdrop but also becomes an integral part of the story, enhancing the overall essence. The central question of who or what "DEVI" represents keeps readers engaged in a guessing game that lasts until the final page is a testament to the author's skill.

Name : Devi - Mystery of the Kolkata Murders
Author : Prasun Roy
Genre : Suspense thriller

My 💭 :

Reading this book during Durga Puja was hell of an experience! 🤩

First of all, kudos to the author for writing such a pageturning story 🙌. I was hooked right from the start, the plot itself was very intriguing and the twists and developments kept me engaged.

Yes, I again correctly guessed the twist midway and I was pleasantly surprised to find one more unexpected small twist in the end. But one thing I have to say - the cops in this book felt very fictional to me because I know for a fact that this city's cops are not polite AT ALL. So, the good doings of all the cops in this book was a bit of a wishful thinking for me sadly.

My previous read almost landed me in a slump. So I was looking for a good fast paced story. Plus the whole timeline of this book was during Durga Puja, so I had to pick it up now. 😍

Coming to the characters, most of them were part of the investigative plot and we get to witness the plot unravel with them. There is an important emotional aspect of the story that really moved me. As for the title 'Devi', it couldn't be more apt. Devi represents all the good forces of this world that eradicates everything that is corrupt and unjust and evil. I like the mythology stories of my country where over and over again we are shown that good triumphs evil. But irl, is it true? I think not. See the world situation currently. Take the situation in Palestine. I may not know all the correct information because of the plethora of misinformation getting spread, but I do know this - countless innocent lives are getting lost to oblivion and no 'power' is coming to save them. Countless lives have been and are getting lost throughout history because of one thing: corruption and greed of humans. Maybe Devi isn't a powerful saviour coming to save us from all these atrocities. We, ourselves can take up the form of Devi and start saving each other.

Devi - Mystery of the Kolkata Murders by Prasun Roy (3.5 stars)
.
This durga puja I was caught up not only in the festivities but also in this fast paced thriller mystery set during the time of Durga puja in the city of Kolkata.
.
The plot surrounds the arrival of a fugitive business tycoon Durgacharan Mahesh, who is being brought to the city during this critical time from Spain, to be put on trial and taken to Mumbai. As the city lights up and dresses up for the Goddess the police force under Commissioner Chauhan is on high alert!
.
Inspite of all precautions a chain of murders and crime start taking place in the city - starting with the murder of Durgacharan's brother in law Vasudev Patel s in mysterious circumstances with a Devi astra and the word 'Devi' written in blood. At the same time a very precious, a heritage item - Bhavani Sankha belonging to a reputed, old bengali family in Kolkata is stolen from the bank. The murders seemingly random gradually are revealed to have a deep and sinister connection.
.
Inspector Arun Palit , a very competent inspector has been suspended from his work due to unethical behavior but he seems to linked with these murders and getting warnings about them. He s in touch with Jai his estranged police friend who s involved in the current investigation and also with Savitri who is a reporter and has deep unrequited love for Arun!
.
As each day of the pujo s pass, the crimes reach a crescendo and we see ' Devi' mete out justice of sorts.
.
Although I could predict a lot of the story right at the start, the play out is quite dramatic and enjoyable. The social cause and revenge angle actually brings out a lot of true but ugly face of our society and that money is a powerful instigator has been proved again.
.
The emotional expressions, the closure and the description of the city life during the festivities also add a good layer to the mystery here.

Who is committing so many murders?? How are the crimes connected with Devi?? Who is Devi??

First of all reading this book during navratri itself just added to the mood. Right from the start the book is engaging and has good pacing. The story never slows down and runs with that of speed of a horse. The mystery is well constructed and the reason behind the murders will leave you widemouthed. I loved how the events are made to appear linked with each other. The twist and turns and the multiple murders and the eagerness to know who was Devi just added to the excitement. I loved how slowly the secret gets revealed. The ending was perfect- nail biting and an emotional one.

If you are looking for engaging fast paced Crime thrillers then dont miss out this one. Good for beginners too as the language is easy.

With his newest crime thriller, Roy takes readers on a wild ride through the streets of Kolkata. The story dives headfirst into the chaos of the festival, where there’s more than just celebration in the air.

A fugitive returns to face trial, turning the city into a hotbed of intrigue and danger. Inspector Arun Palit, a detective with a checkered past, finds himself pegged at the centre of a series of baffling murders, each more puzzling than the last. With the help of his estranged friend Jai and daring reporter Savitri, Arun delves into a quagmire of secrets and lies that threatens to tear the city apart. From Arun’s internal struggles to Jai’s relentless pursuit of the truth, readers are drawn into a world where emotions run high, and danger lurks around every corner.

As the plot thickens, so does the tension. Stolen treasures and cryptic clues throw the investigations into a loop. But amidst the chaos, there’s also a carnival of life and culture. Roy’s remarkable description brings the festival alive on the page.

The richly developed characters add multiple layers of intricacy to the plot.

With flawless language and a riveting narrative, Roy expertly ties together the various threads of the story, not without spotlighting them into the grand scheme of things. The social issues are explored but do not seem preachy or heavy for one moment.

The cover design deserves a special mention. The Durga idol, synonymous with the city of Kolkata and its vibrant puja pandals, captures the essence of the book.

Thriller and mystery fans will enjoy this thrilling adventure! The adrenaline-fueled ride through the lively streets of Kolkata, bursting with merriment as it tackles grave dangers, will keep you regaled till the final pages!

A beautiful story set in the backdrop of the famous Navaratri celebrations in Kolkatta.

The author uses every day from Mahalaya to Maha Dashami as a chapter to highlight aspects of a series of crimes, their investigation and finally culminating into a climax. The endpoint is victory over evil which is the significance of our festivals.

Amid the festivities, a fugitive business baron Durgacharan Mahesh is being extradited from Spain to Kolkatta en route to Mumbai. Police Commissioner Chouhan and his team are given the task of successfully transferring the baron amidst the high-tension duty of maintaining law and order during the festivities. However, a murder takes place and they are left with a clue, the word ‘Devi’ written in blood beside the body. This is followed by a series of murders with similar MO and the word written and the police are clueless about who is the self-proclaimed vigilante set to right the wrongs. The dead people are connected to heinous crimes from not very long ago and the police are at a loss even as bodies pile up.

The story moves ahead as secrets from the past unravel and finally ends in a stunning discovery.

The author through this story has thrown light on how the rich and influential get away with sinister crimes and the cascading effect remains in the form of disgruntlement and very often resulting in vengeful activities.

The end is a bit rushed, otherwise, the story keeps the reader glued.

I picked up this book thinking I’d take a week to finish it—especially since I hadn’t been reading much lately. But to my surprise, it was so gripping and engaging that I ended up reading all the chapters in one go. It completely pulled me in!

Even though it’s clear from early on who is behind the murders, the story still manages to hold your attention. The real thrill comes not from who did it, but from how everything unfolds and why the characters act the way they do. You’re constantly drawn in, waiting for the moment when secrets will explode and consequences will catch up.

One of my favorite lines from the book was: “He was the part of collateral damage.” It’s sharp, emotional, and says so much in so few words.

But what truly sets this book apart is its portrayal of love. Savitri’s character defines a whole new level of love and sacrifice. I don’t think I’ve ever read a love story so intense in a thriller setting. It felt raw and unforgettable.

The emotional depth in the story surprised me. At times I felt sympathy for Arun, at other times I was genuinely frustrated with his choices. That emotional back-and-forth kept me invested until the very last page.

If you're into thrillers with strong characters, emotional depth, and a storyline that lingers even after it ends, this is definitely worth reading.

The story begins with the preparations for the transit of fugitive businessman Durgacharan Mahesh through Kolkata en route to Mumbai. Police Commissioner Vikram Chauhan, determined to ensure everything goes smoothly, entrusts the task to his trusted officer, Jai. However, despite their precautions, tragedy strikes.

Three days before Durgacharan’s arrival, his brother-in-law, Vasudeva Patel, is found murdered, with the word "Devi" scrawled on his body. Soon, more murders follow, plunging the police into a race against time to identify the killer. Adding to the chaos, an old Durga idol is stolen on Maha Chaturthi, leaving everyone to wonder:

- Who is the mastermind behind these murders?
- Who or what is "Devi"?
- Could there be a connection between the murders and the idol theft?

The story is an engaging crime thriller set against the backdrop of Kolkata. While the narrative is compelling and keeps you intrigued, the writing style is straightforward and easy to follow. Fans of thrillers and murder mysteries may find it enjoyable.

A decent read overall, especially if you enjoy fast-paced crime stories with an element of mystery.

The Devi, and the city, come alive
I enjoyed reading Devi on several levels. The mystery intrigued and held my interest till the last sentence of the book. I really liked how the small and big details of the story were like strands woven through the tale and tied up at its culmination.

Now, here is what I really enjoyed, Kolkata came alive in the book and set the perfect stage for the story; in many ways it was a key character in the book, with its own personality and idiosyncrasies. Prasun Roy’s words made each day of Durga Puja stand out, one could feel the colour, the vigour, the emotion in the air. Devi did come to life, brought smiles and tears, and more importantly, she brought justice and grace.

The cover is perfect for the story and conveyed just the right amount of intrigue and suspense. A tiny design detail that I particularly appreciated was the conch design at the end of each chapter; announcing the end of the day, heralding the one yet to begin. Lovely!

An extradited business tycoon holed up in Singapore must visit Kolkata for a judicial hearing – except that the judge/s have an agenda of their own.

The police team gets inundated by a batch of serial murders – each having the telltale sign of Devi. None of the murder victims belong to the same profession, and each has a varied mode of death. Nothing to connect them – or is there?

Prasun Roy connects all the dots neatly towards the end even as cosmic forces unite to grant divine justice. Roy weaves an intricate tale packed with emotions, action and twists. The end is bitter-sweet, as if Life.

The book was a major disappointment. While the premise was promising, the writing style fell short, undermining the potential of the plot. If you're familiar with Bengali cinema, you might recognize its inspirations from Baishe Srabon and Doshom Obotar. Unfortunately, the story lacks the tightness needed to sustain interest until the end.

The dialogues and deductions feel flat, and the identity of the murderer becomes predictable by the first third of the book. The rest of the narrative feels like a mere exercise in connecting the dots. A more refined and polished approach to both the writing and structure could have made this a much more engaging read.
