When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Or maybe a gin and tonic.
Emily Hildebrandt has run into a bit of a rough patch. She's lost her job, her fiance and her apartment. Still, she never expected to be desperate enough to accept an invitation to live with her eccentric Aunt Tilde in Redemption, Wisconsin.
But, beggars can't be choosers. Even if part of the deal is she has to pretend to work at her aunt's latest hair-brained scheme, The Redemption Detective Agency.
Seriously, the woman is a retired nurse. Why does she think she's remotely qualified to run a detective agency, especially in a creepy little town like Redemption?
But, when a strange phone call suddenly thrusts them into an actual case, Emily finds herself hoping her aunt really does know what she's doing ... or an innocent person may be the one to suffer the consequences.
A spin-off from the Charlie Kingsley Mystery series! The Redemption Detective Agency is a funny, twisty cozy mystery series set in the 1990s featuring silver sleuths solving cold cases. Great for fans of the Thursday Murder Club.
A USA Today Bestselling, award-winning author, Michele taught herself to read at 3 years old because she wanted to write stories so badly. It took some time (and some detours) but now she does spend much of her time writing stories. Mystery stories, to be exact. They're clean and twisty, and range from psychological thrillers to cozies, with a dash of romance and supernatural thrown into the mix. If that wasn't enough, she posts lots of fun things on her blog, including short stories, puzzles, recipes and more, at MPWNovels.com.
Michele grew up in Wisconsin, (hence why all her books take place there), and currently lives there after spending nearly 30 years living in the mountains of Prescott, Arizona, with her husband and southern squirrel hunter Cassie.
When she's not writing, she's usually reading, hanging out with her dog, or watching the Food Network and imagining she's an awesome cook. (Spoiler alert, she's not. Luckily for the whole family, Mr. PW is in charge of the cooking.)
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Or maybe a gin and tonic.
The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive was a cute book! I was terribly disappointed when I couldn't read it on my Kindle, but I guess that was life giving me a lemon, haha. I absolutely loved Emily's Aunt Tilde! She was a hoot!! Scout was my second favorite. Redemption, Wisconsin sounds like an intriguing place, and one I would like to know more about. The cover of the book is perfect!
There were some editing errors (one a biggie) but they have hopefully been caught by now. So, if you love a romantic cozy, especially one with some critters, you will swoon over The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive!
Many thanks to both #LoveBasedPublishing and #NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive. This book is #1 in The Redemption Detective Agency series and it has an expected publication date of October 15, 2024.
Emily finds solace and refuge in her Aunt Tilde after going through a bad break-up. Her aunt has a job lined up for her which is office manager cum detective and Emily does not have a clue about how it's going to work out. Then they receive their first case where a man has confessed to a murder he did not commit and they must prove his innocence. A well crafted cozy mystery with well developed characters. I like the humorous dialogue and depiction of the town.
Book 1 of a brand new spin-off from the Charlie Kingsley Mystery series! The Redemption Detective Agency is a funny, romantic cozy mystery series set in the 1990s featuring silver sleuths solving cold cases. Great for fans of the "Thursday Murder Club."
Emily Hildebrandt can’t believe she is in Redemption, Wisconsin but she is broke, lost her fiance, her job, and her home. Without a lot of options she accepts the offer to live with her quirky Aunt Tilde who has the outlandish idea to open The Redemption Detective Agency. She wants Emily to be her office manager. Unsure what a former nurse knows about running a detective agency, Emily is even more confused to learn Tilde’s friends Mildred and Nora are also part of the agency. Nora owns the local bookstore and Mildred is a retired teacher whose main mission seems to be to find Emily a new man. What’s even more surprising is a strange phone call that leads to an actual case. Someone is really counting on them to investigate a matter that could save an innocent person and if they fail the outcome could be dire.
Does Aunt Tilde know what she is doing? Can Emily talk them out of taking the case? Is what they are trying to do even legal?
First, if you haven’t read any of Ms. Wacek’s books you need to know that Redemption, Wisconsin has a unique history and reputation. Strange and unexplained events happen on a regular basis harkening back to an occurrence in 1888. This story is set in the 1990s and while some things have changed, odd happenings still take place.
This series is a spin-off from the author’s Charlie Kingsley series. Tilde and Mildred were introduced there and now they are getting a series to highlight their hijinks. At the onset I was right there with Emily, not sure how this group was going to handle the case but I was happy to see Tilde knew they were going to need help and that help was just a phone call away. Aunt Tilde is eccentric, and funny, and her heart is in the right place. She truly wants to help people. She sure has helped Emily by giving her a place to land while she sorts out her life. Emily is also good for Tilde. She knows how to run a business and tries to keep the others from going off half-cocked plus Tilde is thrilled to have her nearby. I love that she spends time weeding Tilde’s huge garden as she tries to put things in perspective. Mildred is a hoot with no filter, what she is thinking usually comes right out of her mouth. Nora thinks being a detective sounds fun and more exciting than working in a bookstore. I found it endearing how much they love their pets and that they were very welcome in the office.
The mystery was very compelling and maddening. Had a man gone to prison for a crime he didn’t commit? The senior sleuths did a great job investigating and getting answers from key players. Emily along with Nick Stewart, a local lawyer, follow clues too. After some excellent twists, the case is resolved. I am so glad The Redemption Detective Agency took on the case.
While that case is wrapped up and the “detectives” are looking forward to the next one there are still some interesting options open to Emily as she strives to put her old life behind her and emerge stronger and on firmer ground. She may also have a new romance in her future.
The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive was such an enjoyable read. The characters entertained me while tickling my funny bone. I am looking forward to returning to Redemption for more exciting adventures with these uncommon detectives. The Mysterious Case of the Missing Dog Walker will be released on August 26, 2025, followed by The Mysterious Case of the Missing Ghost on September 23.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC.
With a bunch of silly but caring characters surrounding main character Emily Hildebrandt, author Michele Parizer Wacek kicks off a cozy mystery series (which are related to other series by the author). This is my first book by Wacek, and despite the general silliness, this was a fun book.
Emily has come to Redemption after she loses her job, her fiancé breaks up with her, and she no longer has a place to live. Quirky Aunt Tilde, a former nurse, opens her home to Emily, and also brings her in on Tilde's latest endeavour, opening and running a detective agency. That the office needs a deep clean, that they have no business plan, no money, no clients, no license and no investigators is nothing to worry about. Tilde makes Emily her business manager/investigator, and their first client comes to them with a seemingly impossible case: her son is in jail after confessing to a murder, which she is convinced he did not commit.
With the aid of a local lawyer, who agrees to help them pro bono, Emily and Tilde and her friends begin digging into the case and the people involved, and though it seems insurmountable, Emily eventually discovers who the murderer is. She also becomes attracted to the lawyer, Nick, but knows she needs to be careful as he's not into long term relationships.
He is interested in helping her redeem her professional reputation, which was tarnished when her former employers wrongfully fired her for whistleblowing, then blacklisted her with all other employers in the city. Emily isn't yet interested in tackling this situation, instead choosing to rebuild her life in Redemption, Wisconsin.
This was amusing, light, and just what I needed between heavier fare. Emily is a little too concerned about everything being just so, which is a cause of frustration for her every time she deals with Tilde or her friends, who have a stake in the success of the detective agency. I suspect Emily will relax her standards a little over the series, particularly as she loosened up enough to take in the stray dog, give him a home and a name.
I liked all the other opinionated cats hanging out at the agency, and even Tilde's eccentric friends: Mildren, a former teacher with no filter, and Nora, a bookstore owner, who seems to think investigating is more fun than running her store.
This is the first in a series, and I enjoyed this enough to continue with book two, whenever that arrives.
Thank you to Netgalley and to Love-Based Publishing for this ARC in exchange for my review.
This was such a fun cozy mystery. I love the ragtag team that’s been thoughtfully put together by Aunt Tilde. There is no organization, complete & utter chaos, but a group of well meaning ladies who somehow work well together and when they have a bit of organization and leadership from Emily manage to work together well to solve this unique unsolvable case. I absolutely loved the banter between everyone. I love how this group of ladies (& Nick) banters, “argues”, and each have their own strengths. The animals all seem to have their own personalities and I can’t wait to see how much more of them we get in the following books. This was a fun, quick and easy read.
What a delightful start to a new-to-me cozy mystery series! The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive is the first book in the Redemption Detective Agency series, which is set in a small town in Wisconsin. The characters are a lot of fun!
Emily has lost her job, her car, her apartment and her fiancé (doesn’t that sound like a country song?) and has moved in with her aunt Tilde in Redemption, about an hour’s drive from the city she used to live in, Riverview. Emily’s backstory is bumpy - she uncovered embezzlement at her company but since the embezzler was a member of the owning family, they didn’t take kindly to her discovery. Which led to all the above issues for Emily.
Tilde is a retired nurse and has apparently helped another detective out with a couple of cases (this series is in the same universe as another by this author), so she’s decided to open her own detective agency and wants Emily to work with her. There are two other non-professional detectives as well, and they provide some good chuckles. There’s also Nick, a local lawyer, who helps them with their first case - and also helps Emily a bit with getting some money back from her former fiancé. I’m hoping there’s some potential romance between Emily and Nick, as he’s the total opposite of her ex, even though they are both lawyers. But there’s a possible alternate love interest for Emily too!
And I can’t forget the fun animals in this story. So far, there’s two cats and a dog, maybe a third cat too.
Anyway, their first case … It seems hopeless but they agree to try to help when the mother of a young man appeals to them. Her son has confessed to murdering his best friend but she’s convinced he didn’t do it. Meanwhile, he’s in jail.
This is a novella so I breezed through it in no time. Many thanks to the author and Booked With The Emilys for a review copy of this book. (And a chance to read the next two books in the series, which I am totally looking forward to!) This was such a fun read, especially right after a rather “heavy” historical fiction book. All opinions are my own.
Simply MARVELOUS! I learned of this series through following Michele Pariza Wacek on Facebook and I am so glad that I did! The Redemption Detective Agency series is now one of my comfort reads. I love the laid back vibe that the series has. There’s something about this series that allows your mind to relax and become engulfed in the story. For me, sometimes, I get lost trying to keep storylines straight, but this book (and its series) is perfect in every way. I find myself being completely at ease and totally relaxed while reading it. The story and characters keep you engaged and interested from the first to the last page. It’s also hold your attention when you are away from it. I often find myself thinking what will happen next or I wonder what the next book holds. It is captivating in every way!
I love the characters! They are all very interesting, yet very different. I love that Emily and Aunt Tilde have a special relationship that works for them. I love the detective agency and its eccentric staff. The pets make my day, I love that they are prominent in the storyline. Plus, I love that the story is set in 1993. There’s something about the era before smart phone and social media that brings a certain charm to the story.
Overall, I absolutely love this book and its series! I highly recommend it and cannot say enough positive things about it!
Go and grab a copy today! I promise you’ll love it!
I devoured book one and am half way through book two, book three you’re next on my list and I cannot wait!
Thank you Michele Pariza Wacek for writing such a brilliant series! After I wrap up The Redemption Detective Agency series, I’m going to start the Charlie Kingsley series.
This was easily one of the best cozy mystery books that I have read! I was obsessed with this book from the moment that I started reading it. It is an interconnected series that is a spin-off of another cozy mystery series and I only know this because it was listed in the acknowledgements at the end of the book!
It was perfectly set up as a the first in a series and I am in love with the characters. Emily’s life comes crashing down, and she is forced to move in with her quirky Aunt Tilde back in Redemption. Quirky is the perfect term to describe Aunt Tilde and her best friend Mildred. These two old ladies are a hoot together. Emily really doesn’t know what she is getting herself into, but with the help of her new friends (human and animal) she seems to settle in and take the reins.
This book follows the Detective agency’s first client, Greta, in her quest to release her son from prison, after he confessed to the crime! They enlist the help of an attorney, Nick, who seems to just stay on board with the whole detective agency thing they have going on.
I really can’t wait to read the rest of this series, and if you need a book to get you out of a slump, or need something other than your usual smut or fantasy - give the redemtion detective series a shot. You won’t be disappointed.
I am feeling a bit surprised after reading this book because I am finding myself wishing I could read more of it! This was actually delightful; it really did grow on me. When it comes to a rating this was 3.75 stars which I rounded up to 4.
The characters were round and interesting. The main character Emily felt unique and not cookie cutter. I like that she is 30 and not in her late teens or 20s. I did find it pretty silly when she was scared about the dog in this and honestly the cat too. But my conclusion is she must have not grown up with pets and is the nervous, cautious type around animals (at least at this point in the story.) The cat thing did make more sense, honestly in the past I have felt similar with cats although not as intensely as I have no been hated or attacked by them like Emily had.
Nick at first felt a little flat and as time went on I started to enjoy him as a character more. Especially with the ending nice thing he did for Emily. Although the other revelation at the end was not so nice and the author did a great job with leaving this book on a bit of a cliffhanger. It is a good thing I am getting the second book in the mail because I am eager to pick it up! Also, when I head Nick’s story my heart softened more towards the character. He was more three dimensional than I had realized and had actually gone through stuff. I teared up a bit hearing how Aunt Tilde had helped him.
I think the mystery itself got more interesting as the story went on. It felt realistic. Aunt Tilde is a character, she has a lot of sweetness to her but she is also a bit frustrating in some ways but that makes her feel more interesting then if she was only ever sweet and also semi cookie cutter. Her description reminds me of Ms.Frizel.
The main character’s situation reminded me a lot of my previous divorce so that was interesting. Something else that reminded me of that was her slowly realizing more and more what had been going on (the real reason for the breakup.)
Favorite quote/scene:
Page 168
I leaned against the doorjamb. “Actually, I just wanted to tell you I got a letter from Geoff.” Nick’s eyebrows went up. “Oh?” “Yes. Apparently, he doesn’t like my attorney very much.” Nick chuckled. “I’m sure there are a lot of attorneys he doesn’t like, especially ones more competent than he is.”
All in all this was great and I recommend it to anyone that likes good character work and a feel-good cozy mystery story. I am very pleasantly surprised about this. I never would have picked it up (I didn’t know about it before and have a lot of potential tbr books) except that I won book 2 in a Goodreads giveaway. Looking forward to reading book 2!
A heartfelt thank you to @themichelepw and @bookedwiththeemilys for the #gifted first 3 books in this series!
I recently read the first book in this series, and I absolutely adored it! The story is a delightful blend of charm and humor, perfectly capturing the essence of a cozy mystery.
Emily, who has faced the unimaginable loss of her job, home, car, and fiancé, relocates to the quaint town of Redemotion to live with her Aunt Tilde, a spirited retired nurse. Together, they embark on an exciting new venture: starting a detective agency.
This book is a real page-turner! It’s not only quick to read but also filled with clever wit and engaging characters. The dynamic between Emily and her lively “employees” is both entertaining and heartwarming as they navigate the challenges of running the agency. The cast of characters, Aunt Tilde, the quirky Mildred, a retired teacher, and Nora, the endearing bookstore owner, are all wonderfully unique and packed with enough personality to tackle even the most puzzling cases. Plus, the sweet chemistry between Emily and Nick, a local attorney, added an irresistible touch to the narrative.
I loved the animals with their uncanny instincts! They added an extra layer of charm and fun to the story.
If you’re in search of a captivating cozy mystery that delivers plenty of laughter and endearing moments, look no further. The first three books in this delightful series are available on Kindle Unlimited now! Don’t miss out!
The Curious Case of the Missing Motive by Michele Pariza Wacek is one cozy mystery I haven't read before.
I'd like to thank @booksirens for the avanced reader copy I received.
One thing I love about this book that no other cozy mysteries (that I've read) has is that the main character, Emily Hildebrandt, was not an amateus sleuth from the get-go. She has not solve mysteries and does not love mysteries, and is thrown into a mystery she's even reluctant to solve.
It's a breath of fresh air for me since most cozy mysteries make it seem that the main character is already an amateur detective and would do detective work themselves.
Emily and the detective agency she's now part of just want to help solve mysteries even though none of them actually have solved one case before.
Her Aunt Tilde is currently my favorite characyer here as I feel she's another huge mystery to solve and I'm looking forwad to finally revealing her secrets eventually. Definitely a must-read.
Everyone needs an Aunt Tilde in their lives. When Emily Hildebrandt's life comes crashing down, Aunt Tilde gives her a chance to breathe: accommodation, a job as an office manager/detective at The Redemption Detective Agency, and a newfound purpose. However, the newly founded enterprise has its hands full as the detectives attempt The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive.
This book is a part of a new spinoff from the excellent Charlie Kingsley series. If you've read any books from that line, you'll be meeting old friends at this detective agency. These ladies are quirky, yes, but they get the job done with the grace and knowledge that is as much a part of them as their silver hair. Emily brings a refreshing angle to the work, and, sadly, she also has her own life experience to back it up.
Without saying too much, this murder mystery has a different slant in the format, though there are the expected twists and turns that fill the genre. The solution is a superb resolution to the problem and the story concludes with the loose ends beautifully tied up. This book could be read as a standalone, but it's so addictive that I doubt anyone can stop at one.
Thank you to Michele Pariza Wacek and BookSirens for the opportunity to view this eARC. As always, my opinions are my own, honest and true.

Shortly after Emily joins the agency, they get their first case, a woman whose son was wrongly convicted of murder while at a college party. Emily and the motley crew set out to solve the case. Just finished reading “The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive” and I loved it! The story is set in the small town of Redemption, Wisconsin. If you’ve read any other of Michele PW’s books, you’ll know about Redemption’s strange history. (And if you haven’t, go grab any of her books and start reading!)
As this is the first book in a new series, we are being introduced to new characters. Each has a quirky personality and I’m looking forward to getting to know them better. The storyline has just enough mystery to keep you interested and wondering who dunnit. A perfect cozy mystery!
I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this review.
The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive is Book 1 in The Redemption Detective Agency by Michele Pariza Wacek. This new series is a spin off of The Charlie Kingsley Mysteries and this series is FABULOUS. Emily has lost her job, apartment and then her fiance dumped her. She has gone to her Aunt Tilde to get on her feet. Tilde and her "friends" are starting a Detective Agency with Emily as their office manager. The murder is old but the ladies are mighty. I found the book to be funny with so many emotions along the way. Book 2 involves a missing dog. These ladies say… Bring It On! I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
Challenges, and devastation for a young lady doing what is right and being taken advantage of. Oh what fun and wonderful support from a crazy, lovable chaotic character… her aunt and her wonderful friends. Now start up a detective agency and we are off for a very entertaining ride.
Best for young at heart people who like a cozy detective story, and young people. With feel good ending.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Emily Hildebrandt looses everything which was important and ends up at her Aunt Tilde's. She is drawn into a new job as a private Investigator with three other women one being her aunt Tilde to solve a murder case that seemed doomed from the start. There is a lot of humour as these amateur sleuths go about trying to find the truth. An intriguing read. I received this ARC copy via Booksirens and leave a honest review. I recommend this book to other readers.
I was so furious with all the cheating and lies in this story as I read. I hoped they'd get what they deserved. Nick was an asset to the agency and a great behind the scenes lawyer and helped repair some damages mentioned in the story. I can't believe these people would let an innocent man pay for their crimes. That's just evil. I still want to see redemption for the Duckworth part. Trisha seems like a nasty little piece of work. We'll see. More trouble? I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.
Redemption, Wisconsin in the 1990s. This is book one of a new series. All the stories intertwine characters in the town. Emilys life has been turned upside down. Her aunt Tilde has offered her room, board, and a job at the new Detective Agency. They take on a case that has the team investigating and reviewing facts. Meanwhile, a failed engagement, a new possible love interest, and a blind date make Emily’s life interesting. The characters are fun! I look forward to reading the rest of the series! Thanks Book Sirens for providing me with the Advanced Reader copy.
Wacky and fun and characters sure to please even the toughest readers. It a "Gang's All Here" book that knows how to lay a foundation for a series you won't want to miss. You will enjoy every minute of it. Highly Recommended.
How do I apply to be a detective at the Redemption Detective Agency? 👀 Such a cute cozy mystery! I need me an Aunt Tilde and Scout 🥹 I’m pretty much hooked on the town that is Redemption and will obviously have to read more! Solving a murder when there is already a confession!
Thank you Michelle and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy!
What a fun and easy to read book that was short and quick to read but was enjoyable and entertaining. I love Aunt Tilde and the other ladies of the newly formed Redemption Detective Agency and how they all look after Tilde's niece Emily. This is a cosy and fun book to read, has just the right amount of interest and mystery to keep you involved but there is so much fun in it it will keep you smiling.
A lovely, entertaining, fun and quirky characters bring the whole story together. I look forward to seeing what comes next for the ladies of The redemption Detective Agency.
I loved that immediately you are whisked away and into chaos within the first few pages. Redemption is a city with its own personality and it's zany characters. The main lead, Emily moves to Redemption to live with her aunt. She is promised a job is waiting for her, and Emily is left in suspense until it's revealed her aunt opened a detective agency with her friends.I felt the book moved along at a decent place. Many times I laughed out loud at the antics of the older ladies within the detective agency. I love the ladies are chasing down the motive of a crime. A cozy mystery with a different spin and in throughly enjoyed the book.
*I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book. The comments and opinions expressed are strictly my own.
I recently delved into the intriguing world of The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive, the first book in Michele Pariza Wacek's The Redemption Detective Agency series. This cozy mystery sent me to the quaint and peculiar town of Redemption, Wisconsin. The protagonist, Emily Hildebrandt, is a relatable young woman who recently lost everything, including her job and her fiancé, and with no other suitable options, she reluctantly moves in with her eccentric Aunt Tilde. The twist? Aunt Tilde has recently started up a detective agency and has an office manager job ready and waiting for Emily. This sets the stage for a story filled with humor, mystery, and a touch of the unexpected, where Emily must navigate her new reality and the quirky company of her aunt's agency members. One of the book's many strengths is its vibrant cast of characters. Emily serves as a relatable amateur sleuth whose flaws make her journey both realistic and engaging. The secondary characters, including her aunt, Mildred, and Greta, add layers of charm and whimsy to the narrative. Each character is distinct, with many having unique traits that provide comic relief and depth. A love interest further enriches the plot, offering another dimension to Emily's story and me into her personal growth. The presence of animal companions adds warmth and humor, making the agency feel alive and bustling with personality. I still giggle when I think of Emily’s first encounter with Midnight. The setting of Redemption, particularly the detective agency, is portrayed so vividly that it becomes a character in its own right. The small-town atmosphere, combined with the unique ambiance of the detective agency, enveloped me in a world that felt both familiar and mysterious. Michele Pariza Wacek's subtle yet vivid descriptions bring the setting to life, making it easy to imagine adventuring around Redemption alongside Emily. The agency is depicted with such detail that one can almost smell the coffee brewing and hear the chatter of the team. The storyline is well-developed, with plot twists that are as unexpected as they are satisfying. The mystery at the heart of the book is intriguing, with red herrings and misdirection that keep readers guessing until the very end. The storytelling is layered and includes Nick’s backstory, which evoked empathy and investment in the characters' journeys. The book expertly balances mystery, intrigue, and humor, maintaining a consistent tone and mood throughout. Lighthearted moments and Emily's reflections add depth to the narrative, providing a perfectly well-rounded reading experience. As the story unfolded, it created a puzzle that was both challenging and enjoyable. The pacing was perfect, ensuring that the tension never waned, and I remained hooked until the final page. The conclusion of the book delivered an unexpected ending that tied up the story neatly, while also leaving room for continuation. The denouement is well-executed, offering a sense of closure and anticipation for the next installment. Overall, The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive is a delightful introduction to a promising series. With its captivating characters, charming setting, and clever mystery, it is a book that will appeal to fans of the cozy mystery genre. I am eagerly looking forward to the next adventure in The Mysterious Case of the Missing Dog Walker. Opinionated Book Rating: Originality: 5.0/5.0 Plot Structure: 5.0/5.0 Pacing: 5.0/5.0 Dialogue and Narrative: 5.0/5.0 Personal Enjoyment: 5.0/5.0 Overall Rating: 5.0/5.0

Wacek expertly weaves the quirky with the compelling. The plot twists keep you guessing, and Redemption’s eerie undertones add a layer of intrigue to the otherwise cozy vibe. The characters, from pets lounging in the detective's office to Nick Stewart, a local lawyer with a hint of romantic potential, bring warmth and richness to the narrative.
Fans of The Thursday Murder Club and anyone who loves clever, character-driven mysteries will find much to adore here. Whether you're new to Redemption or a returning visitor, this book is a standout entry into Wacek’s universe. Packed with humor, unexpected twists, and heartfelt moments, The Redemption Detective Agency proves that solving mysteries isn’t just about uncovering the truth—it’s about finding yourself along the way.
Grab a cup of tea (or that gin and tonic) and settle in—this is one case you won’t want to miss.
The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive is a delightful cozy mystery that blends quirky characters, small-town charm, and a puzzling whodunnit. Emily Hildebrandt finds herself at rock bottom after losing her job, fiancé, and apartment in quick succession. With nowhere else to go, she reluctantly accepts an offer to stay with her eccentric Aunt Tilde in the mysterious town of Redemption, Wisconsin.
What Emily doesn't expect is that Aunt Tilde’s latest project involves running a detective agency—and to make matters even more bizarre, Emily is now the office manager and detective-in-training. When they stumble upon a real case involving a murder confession with a missing motive, Emily has to hope her aunt's unorthodox methods can help solve the mystery before an innocent person pays the price.
The small-town vibes of Redemption are perfectly captured in this book, with its oddball characters and undercurrent of mystery. Aunt Tilde is a standout character—witty, unpredictable, and full of surprises. The relationship between her and Emily adds a heartwarming touch to the story. As the mystery unfolds, so do the deeper emotional layers between these two women, both of whom are finding new purpose and direction.
The mystery itself is well-paced and keeps you guessing with plenty of twists and turns. I loved the humor throughout and the setting in the 1990s added a fun nostalgic element. Though this is my first time reading Michele Pariza Wacek, I’m eager to dive into more of her work, especially if it means returning to the quirky world of Redemption.
If you enjoy cozy mysteries with a healthy dose of humor, small-town intrigue, and strong female characters, The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive is a perfect pick. Highly recommend!

THE MYSTERIOUS CASE OF THE MISSING MOTIVE By Michele Pariza Wacek
About the book 👇🏽
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Or maybe a gin and tonic.
Emily Hildebrandt has run into a bit of a rough patch. She’s lost her job, her fiance and her apartment. Still, she never expected to be desperate enough to accept an invitation to live with her eccentric Aunt Tilde in Redemption, Wisconsin.
But, beggars can’t be choosers. Even if part of the deal is she has to pretend to work at her aunt’s latest hair-brained scheme, The Redemption Detective Agency.
Seriously, the woman is a retired nurse. Why does she think she’s remotely qualified to run a detective agency, especially in a creepy little town like Redemption?
But, when a strange phone call suddenly thrusts them into an actual case, Emily finds herself hoping her aunt really does know what she’s doing … or an innocent person may be the one to suffer the consequences.
🔎 My thoughts:
A fast romantic cozy mystery to binge in one sitting! You’ll fall in love with the quirky characters while laughing throughout the whole book. I really do enjoy when the sleuths are silver in color, it adds so much personality to the characters. Aunt Tilde and Scout came to steal the show and my heart! And the best part (aside from everything I’ve already mentioned) the mystery itself was compelling and overall had some good twists! So if you enjoy some romance with your mystery and humor with your characters, this is a series to start! The Mysterious Case of the Missing Motive is out now!
I am an ARC reader and this is my honest opinion. This is a fairly amusing little book, if you enjoy slightly dotty maiden aunts and spinsters in a mysterious town. I think I had a problem getting into the story because, from the start, the principal character, A young woman of indeterminate age named Emily, is the exact opposite of me. I realise the story is set some time pre computers and mobile phones, but Emily doesn't seem to have got the memo that women no longer had to play housekeeper, cook and generally wait on their man hand and foot and believe everything he said, without question or checking or doing anything independently. She found herself thrown out of her relationship, apartment and job, within a few hours, with no money and no car, thanks to the man with perfect looks, perfectly pressed shirts and never a hair out of place, and his equally buttoned up family. Finding herself adrift and taken in only by the previously mentioned dotty aunt, I, personally could never give a nano second's thought to getting rid of the starving, dirty stray dog who turns up and looks to her for help than fly in the sky.
The haphazardly set up detective agency takes on a client - who can't pay, enter a tousled, slightly disheveled lawyer who makes her stomach flip, helps the new agency solve the case and also goes out of his way to help Emily without saying a word, and Emily is instantly attracted to an apparent copy of her ex, set up by a strict, retired school teacher. The book is a fun little read, and I could see enjoying the author's other works, but for this series, I'm not sure I enjoyed the characters as much as I would have liked to
