The Decline left what was once America The West, who operates under the old democracy, and the east, renamed Appalachia for the mountains it resides in. Now, over a century later, Alexandra Meadows finds herself in the midst of Asi, one the largest provinces in Appalachia, with no memory of her past. The only one to guide her through it is Jackson Tarlock, the handsome son of the looming Lord Thomas Tarlock, Lord of Asi. Jackson assures Aly of their childhood love story, but parts of his story don't add up, and Aly is left to question if she truly belongs with him. In a whirling, rapid twist of events, Aly tries to reconcile who she is with who she was and must do so quickly, for peace is never what it seems, and the parts of her she does not know are on the brink of war.
I have three editions of this book. I have the first paperback published in 2017. I have this new paperback published in 2023. Both books are autographed by Kristyna. I also have the newer book in Kindle edition. Heather and I are going to read this together in January 2024.
In the first five chapters, I am seeing some influence from the author's life here in Ramona, as well as the influences of her childhood. I am enjoying the story so far. Looking forward to seeing where she takes us.
I think Kristyna did a wonderful job on this, her first book, version 2.0. She did a great job creating a future world with characters that we cared about. I look forward to reading her next book.
Great job Kristyna! This was a great debut novel. I am so proud of you for completing this book and being able to share your talent with the world.
Now… time for the review.
Characters: There were times that Aly kind of annoyed me, but to be perfectly honest, the more I kept reading, the more I understood Aly wasn’t really annoying me at all. She lost her memory and that’s not her fault. TRAUMA! Jackson tried way too hard. But I feel like he was written that way. He was so desperate to keep Aly that he kept pushing her away. But you could still feel the love between them. Childhood love. Derrick was someone I wanted a little more backstory on. I felt like I didn’t get enough of him to know why he was Aly’s other suitor other than him just being the other guy from her childhood. I want to know more. Howard! My man! Something about you makes me so happy. I hope you get more page time in the sequel. I feel like we could be friends.
There are many other characters and my feelings on them, but I don’t want to focus on them.
Storyline: At the beginning of the book I kept saying this was some sort of Steampunk Dystopian but not. And I don’t think I was wrong! There were elements of that for sure. I was so confused at the start of this book, but realized that the author truly put you into the FMC’s (Female Main Character) point of view. You unraveled the story with her. You only knew what she knew. There was some great foreshadowing and some great gentle plot twists. They weren’t crazy and unthinkable, but they worked well with the story.
Reading Experience: This was such an easy read. The world building was fantastic and not too “info-dumpy”. I did feel like you were in Aly’s head a lot and there wasn’t that much dialogue. This was more of an experience to share with the main character. Overall, a great story!
I am excited to read the sequel when it comes out. And maybe I’ll be lucky enough to score another autographed copy.
