Haven Ever After #4

Waltzing with Witches

Rate this book
Morgan Hector is mine, but for her own safety, I can never claim the pretty witch. I can never sate myself on her blood or bring her to bliss with my teeth. We’ll never be anything more than acquaintances.

But when I discover she’s homeless and living in my office at Town Hall, I do what I shouldn’t—I bring her home. Being in close proximity with the mate I hold at arm’s length is the most devastating torture. Morgan is smart, stunning, and imbued with a healing magic stronger than any I’ve encountered. She smells good enough to eat, and I’d give my right fang to devour her.

The longer we spend under the same roof, the more my control beings to fray. But the secrets I harbor protect innocent lives—including Morgan’s. No matter how much I long for her, I can’t give into temptation. But just when I think I’ve wrestled back my desire, a dangerous warlock makes his final play against me. When Morgan ends up in his crosshairs, I have impossible decisions to make.

In a war between duty and love, can I make the choice that’s right for her? Or will I doom us both to misery and loss?

I was looking forward to this book in the series the most, and it was pretty good. The story felt a bit more fleshed out than the others, but I have some mixed feelings over some things.

For one, there’s kind of sad tone over everything. I have this on the spoiler tag but major spoilers… the Keeper saw Morgan a few years ago in the human world, so for him it’s been 100 years of staying away from her!

And right after he sees her, he goes through the Keeper process and loses a lot of himself and emotions, and he is fighting a deathly illness also, so he doesn’t feel worthy of her.

So this is all sad and I feel for both of them. Yet, I wanted there to be more buildup of them getting to know each other. It’s sort of slow burn, because it’s been a month overall and he’s been in the other books but I found myself wishing for just a bit more oompf.

That said, of course I was rooting for them and was happy when he finally started to give in! I liked how Morgan showed him he was worth it and wanted any time they could have together.

The spice to me was the worst part. 😂 It just was not my personal cup of tea, but to each is own! Because he’s a vampire, he was not opposed to *ahem* activities on her period.

But the worst thing to me was the house joined in on their sexy time?! Morgan can sense the buildings in town. They’re sort of sentient and have emotions and I thought it added whimsy, and she helps clean and make the Keeper’s house happy again.

Then out of the blue the house wants to fuck her and joins in on their sex. Hmmmm I didn’t like that. It kind of took a whimsical, cute bond to a very weird place for me! 😂

Her and Abe (the Keeper) also discuss sharing in the future, and how vampires love orgies, and I decided the spice in this one just wasn’t meant to jive with me personally.

Other than that, the action with Wesley finally comes to an end. I thought that part could’ve been a little more drawn out considering it followed through the whole series, but these books are usually romance rather than high fantasy or action oriented, so that was fine to me.

I liked that Abe finally did what he wanted and stood up to his mother at the end.

So overall, I loved the magic in these books and looked forward to each sister finding her happiness. Certain things were not my taste, but maybe others would like it!

I laughed, I cried, I fanned myself. This little chapter of the Haven After series might be done, but there’s SO MUCH more to come.

📕 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Waltzing with Witches by Hazel Mack

📙 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: The Haven Ever After series by Hazel Mack, book 4.

📗 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀: E-book ARC on Kindle

📘 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗲: Paranormal romance

📔 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀: Enemies-to-lovers, fated mates, lots of 🩸, he’s loved her all along, forced proximity.

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Morgan was brought to Ever by The Keeper, and he says she’s his mate, but he continues to hold her at arms length. But when her house kicks her out and she needs a place to stay, he brings her to his castle - and it turns out being in close quarters only makes it harder to deny their connection.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: I’ve raved about this series from the start. And even though it’s not over, the first four books’ storyline has come to a close, and what a closing it was.

I think I speak for EVERYONE when I say we were waiting for Morgan and the Keeper’s book. And I have to say, Hazel Mack took me on a journey with this one. She had me crying before the 30% mark, but once everything was out in the open, The Keeper was everything I hoped he would be.

He was possessive and kinky and kind and so romantic. And Morgan got every bit of the happy ending she deserved. I almost feel like I need to give a trigger warning - but it’s a vampire book so you all know it’s going to get a little freaky on the blood play side.

I was so beyond happy with how this storyline with the Hector sisters closed - and with all the potential Hazel Mack left open for the next four books.

🪄 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝗲: Easy. Hazel Mack sometimes makes her own rules, but she does a great job of explaining how everything works while not bogging a story down with world building.

𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹: 4.5/5 🌶🌶🌶🌶

My absolute favorite thing about fated mates is the pure devotion and complete monogamy of love, and when you take that away and make these monsters willing to share their mates in sex.... it totally negates the whole relationship to me. Like what is even the point of the trope then?!?

Strange and Steamy!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 🩵🖤❤️💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: ☹️☺️😍😄🥰
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Morgan - she is one of the triplets that recently moved to the town of Ever. The town is a haven for monsters and Morgan and her sisters recently learned that they are witches that were called to the town because Morgan is the Keeper’s mate. Though the Keeper only called her to their haven to get people off his back about getting married, so he has not been treating Morgan well and doesn’t plan on ever doing anything about the fact that they are mates. Morgan is a black witch and her magic hasn’t come in yet like the green and white magic her two sisters have.

The Hero: The Keeper - he is a vampire whose parents are part of the Harth council. His mother is overly concerned with keeping up appearances and is afraid that the Keeper will disappoint her in his duties. The keeper used to be a fun guy, but when he became the Keeper, the training does something to Keepers, it turns off their emotions, so he is only concerned about the safety of the haven and his is singleminded about his duties. He takes mood dampening potions so he can stay as he is and be good at his job, but since Morgan arrived in town, the potion has not been working as well as it used to.

The Story: Morgan has been staying at the Annabelle bed and breakfast inn since she arrived in Ever. The homes and buildings in Ever are sentient beings and the Annabelle has been contrary when it comes to Morgan. Annabelle has tripped her, pushed her, and done some other things, so Morgan isn’t too surprised when the B&B kicks her out in the middle of the night. She ends up going to the Town Hall because she knows it isn’t kept locked and falls asleep in the Keeper’s office. When the Keeper gets a notice that someone is in his office, he heads to town and finds Morgan. He ends up taking her to his castle to stay.

I really enjoyed the first two books in this series about the other two of the triplet sisters. They are fraternal triplets, so they all look different including different hair colors and body types. They even call themselves the Sanderson sisters since they love Hocus Pocus and one has brown hair, one has blonde, and one is a redhead. I love the monster filled town with all the whimsical and magic things, like sentient houses and wards that keep the bad element (the thralls) out. There are gargoyles, trolls, pixies, vampires, witches, werewolves and much more. The story was good, the romance was sweet and steamy. I will have to admit though, that some of the intimate scenes got very strange.

This audiobook was in multiple points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Mason Lloyd and Mia Barrow. Both of these narrators are very good and perfect for this series. Mason has a deep voice, and he has a way of talking that is perfect for the staid vampire. Mia Barrow has a nice, soft, feminine voice that I really enjoy as well.

Igualmente voy a seguir leyéndolo. Espero que no vuelva a hacer nada parecido porque entonces si diré apaga y vámonos.

I was really looking forward to this one and I think it could have ticked all my personal boxes but then the thing with Ben… and a few other parts pulled me out of it completely.

If I was the triplet who felt like I was left out and had nothing that was truly just mine I would at least want my mate to be just mine and want me and only me adding the extra in was absolutely unnecessary and if I was reading the authors omega verse series I wouldn’t have batted an eye but after 3 books with a set vibe some parts in this one had me like… what.

The other three books are on my “I would read again” list. It thought they were cute, steamy, the world building was great and the connections were well put together. This one didn’t give me that and I don’t know if I want to act like this is a trilogy or try again with the next one.

I have been feral for the Keeper since Book 1, ever since he first sneered at his mate and decided his romance would be Hate to Love. Bring on the angst! With each book, I received more of a taste of what their relationship could be like, so by the time book came, I was completely beyond help and insanely excited for their love story. It did not disappoint! It did surprise...oh yes, many surprises...I'm going to go a little wild towards the end with some spoilers for those of you who don't like surprises...but for the rest of you, shall we dive in?

If you haven't been keeping up, the Hector sisters have been in Ever now for one month, and while two of them have found their happily ever afters, Morgan Hector has decidedly not. Ever since being called there by her mate, he has kept her at a distance, and she is at her wits end. Ready to pack it up and call it a wash, Morgan is dismayed when the inn she's been calling home the entire time decides to play matchmaker. Kicked out in the middle of the night with her bags packed and the inn's door locked, Morgan winds up spending the night in the Keeper's mayoral office, where he finds her in the after the Town Hall building alerts him to her presence. Without many options, he offers her a room in his castle until things can be sorted out. Except now Morgan is close to him, her scent driving him crazy, and he's worried he may do the absolute worst thing and given in to his urges. He can't be with her; there are too many secrets she doesn't know about and none of them lead to a lifetime of happiness for the two of them. But Morgan recognizes an opportunity when she sees one, as does her family, and it's going to take a lot more than a closed door to keep Morgan from finally claiming her mate.

When I tell you I cried multiple times while reading this, I am not exaggerating. I was messaging the author, my fellow ARC readers, lamenting about how my poor heart could not take the strain. I can't say too much without giving away major plot points, but believe me - the Keeper lives up to all of our most positive expectations and more! He is chivalrous, kind, generous, an amazing lover and, above all, totally and completely in love with Morgan. His reasons are not what we could think of in our wildest dreams, and it was almost physically painful to read about his past and what made him into the man we have seen over the last three books. If you hated his mother before, buckle up and ask for some restraints, because you're going to want to personally unalive her. And Morgan? My sweet Morgan, with a fiery independent side but an emotional vulnerability that left her questioning if the Keeper really wanted her. She struggled so much in this book, and yet she was so desperate to do what she could to ensure she and the Keeper could be together. I knew she was strong, but her strength blossomed into this brilliance that was able to keep both her and the Keeper strong when things felt like they were falling apart. Their relationship was full of ups and downs, and it took a long time for them to find happiness, but by Gods, when they did, it was magical. And sexy. With a capital S.

Now for the spoiler-y bits, are you ready?

The Keeper's castle is sentient. And horny. Make of that what you will but brace yourselves. I was not prepared. This might have been mildly more shocking than the troll whip. IYKYK. The Keeper also has no problems sharing Morgan if she wants to try new things...if you catch my drift. And periods? Not just an annoying time of month anymore. This couple is kinky and open and ready to roll with whatever makes the other person happy.

Everything we all hoped it would be and so much more!

If you know me, you know I've been raving about this series since book one. I recommend it to anyone who wants book recs. I think about it probably on a daily basis. I've been anticipating Morgan and the Keeper's book since he drops the "mate" bomb in the beginning of book one. Calling the journey they go through in the first 3 books complicated is an understatement. From complete enemies to hesitant allies to possible friends. This book was everything I hoped it would be. Everything I wanted it to be. Everything I needed it to be. And so much more!

We open this book learning of multiple fresh heartbreaks on Morgan's end and let me tell you I was legit crying actual tears by chapter 3. This being dual POV is so important because once we get into the Keeper's head for the first time, all bets are off.

We finally learn EVERYTHING over the course of the book and it's a revelation. We learn why he's been acting the way he does. Why he called her. How he knew she even existed. We learn everything. All the questions are answered. It's heartbreaking and beautiful. Morgan and the Keeper come together in small slow moments that culminate into an explosive (and bloody 😏) scene. He's a born vampire, yall. The blood play is no joke. No matter how frustrated you were by the Keeper's actions in previous books, you will find yourself a puddle of mush once the whole story is out. We see a side of him in this book that's previously been hidden from us and he's kind, romantic and very open to new experiences as long as Morgan's enjoys them too. We love a man who doesn't know what the word jealously means. And Morgan gets her much deserved explanations, apologies and probably the best groveling scene I've ever read.

The over arching Wesley plot comes to an incredibly satisfying ending while giving us a teaser of what's to come in future Haven Ever After books. This series, and especially this book, is going to be a favorite of mine forever.

Thank you to Hazel Mack for letting me read an arc of this book!!

"You are my favorite person in the entire universe. I don't deserve you, but if you want me despite my many, many shortcomings and failures, then I'm yours."

Gosh these two took forever but it was worth it! I had so many emotions (sometimes many at once) while reading this. It had me crying, laughing, shouting, swearing, blushing. And Hazel had me guessing and on the edge of my seat the whole time. AND THE GROVELING! Oh the groveling. Perfection.

Not only did we get the romance between The Keeper and Morgan, but Hazel blessed us with some more spicy characters. Ben is amazing and we must protect him at all costs! And Carlisle?! I NEED MORE OF HIM. He better show back up at some point because I need more of that sexy vampire man.

I love how interconnected all the characters and stories are in this series. And we got the perfect tiny glimpse into the next story and couple.

I was so happy to be back in Ever, and as usual I'm very sad to leave again. But I know soon we'll be able to go back and get more sexy and craziness from this world and characters.

This was the book I was most excited for in the series - but ultimately ended up finding it more lackluster. The tension between the two dissipated almost immediately. The spicy scenes teased didn't ultimately pan out. The big defeat of the villain of the past several books just...happened and felt rushed. Even the big reveal of why our male character acted the way he did fell flat. I loved our two characters when they were side characters in all the previous series - I just wanted it to be more here.

I knew this one would hurt. It absolutely wrecked me and I love it so much. The Keeper and Morgan have to be my favorite love story due to its devastating nature. (My favorite kind of love.) The Keeper, stone cold, detached and …. Something much deeper. Morgan, fierce, competitive… the loyal protector and one who needs love the most. We finally get to meet Lou too! I am absolutely in awe over the sentient houses. It’s one of my favorite touches and Ben… he’s my favorite. I mean who wouldn’t want to roll around in sentient sheets with a hot vampire and some unique blood play? I loved that the castle is also involved with the keeper and Morgan. I know people didn’t like that bit for me it is one of the coolest features and I would bang Ben. 10/10. Devastatingly beautiful, tragic and lovely. My favorite of the books (even though it’s hard to pick a favorite, they each are exactly what they need to be and so much more). I have a particular fondness for the keeper and have since book one. I’m glad to see his growth and personality blossom alongside Morgan. Another story well done by Hazel. Richard’s story can’t come soon enough!!!

DNF @ 78%

After reading (and hating) the second book, I wasn't sure if I'd pick this one up, but I was too curious and I can say it was a waste of time and money.

I wanted to know why he called her and why he acted the way he did and it was so stupid and not worth it. He called her because her parents died and he felt her pain. My question is what was he trying to accomplish by calling her, if he was going to reject her. Causing her even more pain? What was the point?? And his reason for rejecting her was because he was sick. Yet he lived 100 years with that sickness and he felt okay. All other creatures who had the disease died in days/weeks. Why didn't he call her after a few years when he felt okay and spend as much time as possible with her?

And not knowing his name was such a big deal, like all Keepers are referred to as Keeper, but when other Keeper came, he introduced himself with his real name and no one called him Keeper. And how would that work when there are 2 of them, like it was here, if the other Keeper wasn't a friend?

I don't even want to mention how weak and pathetic Morgan is. She spent the book chasing after him and convincing him they should be together, after he publicly rejected her and kept rejecting and avoiding her? And her 'connection' with buildings was so bizarre and weird. She was caressing the walls and talking to them, I half expected her to start fucking them. But she didn't. Keepers house was just kinda watching them fuck and sometimes holding Keeper's hands tied. I'm not sure if anything kinkier happens with the house later, but I couldn't keep reading.

Also, if they did tests to see if they're compatible to be Keepers, why did they have to go through those sessions that altered their brains. It just makes no sense. Aren't there other people with exact qualities needed for a Keeper position? What is the point of a that test of they have to change either way? Keepers have to be emotionless, but emotional enough to know what's good for the people. It made no sense. Also, there are a lot of psychopaths and sociopaths who are perfect for that position. They can even be people who are less emotional. And the Keeper was easy going, funny guy who avoided responsibilities, so what made him be a perfect match to be a Keeper? No fucking sense at all.

I have to mention that constant blushing, flushing, pink cheeks and similar descriptions really annoy me and I don't understand the writers' obsession with it, and there was a lot of that here. Even Moira, the mostly bird blushed.

If he cries blood, does he pee blood too? And what about his cum? Also, the second period sex scene have me the ick.

Also, he had pale hair but black brows. And the writing is just so annoying. There are so many unnecessary adjectives - elegant nostril, or always a color before the eyes are mentioned. It's fine to say it once or twice, but it gets annoying after that.

There are more things I can say, but I'll stop here and finish with saying that I'm done with this series and I'm done with this author.

Waltzing with Witches has been on my TBR since Hazel announced it's release date. She has been teasing the third triplet, Morgan, and her mate, the Keeper, since book one. It promised pining and rejected mate tropes and it definitely delivered.

Annabelle (the house) has kicked Morgan out and she finds herself accepting the Keeper's invitation to come to stay in his home until they figure out what is going on. The Keeper is less than pleased with this new situation but not because he can't stand her. It's quite the opposite. He is starting to FEEL.

“I have loved you across space and time,” he murmurs, moving to the back of my neck and kissing again. “I loved you before I even knew you. And now that you’re here? There is no depth, no end to what I feel. I’m not a whole person, Morgan. I’m deeply flawed. But I will spend every day attempting to become someone worthy of such a gift.”

Morgan and the Keeper have a delicious push/pull and quite the relationship development. It has taken them quite some time to get to the point where they're willing to share their secrets no matter how devastating. Morgan is coming into her powers and starts to see a side of the Keeper that she never knew existed. The Keeper is starting to see the strength and tenacity of his mate and just maybe she can handle his past. But just as they start to get to dive deeper, danger strikes and they'll have to balance keeping Ever safe and nurturing their bond.

Waltzing with Witches was full of action and suspense but also a lot of heartbreak and passion. I laughed, I cried, I got angry and I smiled discretely behind my Kindle so I didn't look like a creep. Morgan was sure of her wants and needs and I really appreciated that. The Keeper was a little less dominant than I was expecting him to be which was a little bit of a bummer but he made up for it with his poetic words to Morgan.

“I’m sure you’ll think it’s far too soon for me to say this, but I’m in love with you, Morgan Anne Hector. Before I met you, I loved the idea of you because we’d had no time. And then I loved the version of you I thought I’d lost. But the real you, the you that’s here now in my arms? I am deeply, wildly gone for that woman.”

I really enjoyed the story and the setup for the next story. The love and passion between Morgan and the Keeper was so passionate and cute. The smut was holy hell. The period moment? Did I find that hot? Yeah, yeah I totally did. IYKYK. The only element I found a little...strange...was the castle getting involved in their sexcapades. The castle, Ben, was a part of their relationship and I couldn't decide if I found it hot AF or weird. I go back and forth because it was also kind of cute.

Overall, a pretty solid read that delivered a romance that I have been waiting for for what feels like ages. Hazel definitely did Morgan and the Keeper justice and I'm happy to report that they've learned to communicate. Thank God.

Out of the triplets, this was the story that I wanted to read the most because it was the one that had the potential of so much depth. There were NO trigger warnings about sex with menstruation blood play, including oral. Zero trigger warnings on a fucking house having a threesome with them. A house having sex with a human, um what? It pulled me out of the story and made me dislike this book in what were my two favorite characters.

The first three books were cute and cozy, you can't flip the screen to taboo kinks in a cozy series, it doesn't work that way. It felt disconnecting and I skipped the sex scenes because if I knew, I would have never picked it up.

The way Morgan had her menstrual cycle, women don't bleed like that in such a big pool of blood and dripping it on the floor on every step she takes. And if they do, it's because they have a serious issue, Morgan need her OBGYN stat, that's not normal sweetheart. Then with a small pin prick on her finger, she bleeds for an hour and drips blood everywhere. Unless you have a blood thinning disorder, pricks clot pretty quick and are slow to bleed without putting pressure on it. With those conditions, the LAST thing Morgan should be doing is dating a vampire.

How the Keeper was healed and the villian killed was anticlimatic and it just added more to the disappointment. Plus discrepency on how old the Keeper was, one chapter he's hundreds years old and the next he's thousands. Morgan's height shifts all the time when compared to the keeper, sometimes she's tall and other times she's short. One chapter his dick is at the level of her ass, the next his dick is at the level of her stomach in the same position. That should have been something the editor should have picked up on.

I really dislike how this series took a turn into taboo sex, the next book is with a young girl dating her much older father's best friend. If that's your yum, fine, but don't start a cozy book and twist it halfway thru, it's two completely different audience and not how to handle a series. I really wanted to read Lou's story too, but I can't, it is not my yum and I will not continue the series.

Such a fun read! I know it’s not the last book but I love how it closes a chapter on the triplets. Abe and Morgan got the love they deserved. It was perfect. I learned that period/blood play isn’t my thing looool but I loved everything else.

I knew I was going to be absolutely obsessed with this book, but finishing it in only a handful of hours was not on my bingo card. This book had me in a rabbit hole, way deep in my feelings, and I'm still not okay after finishing it and the epilogue. For my fellow gamers, if you've played Mass Effect and went with the Thane Krios romance, then you will understand why 95% of this book I was sobbing my freaking eyes out and you understand the pain, the sobbing, but the deep love for this dang couple. What more can I say, other than this is probably my favorite book in the whole series so far.

"I've waited my whole life for her and she's perfect"

If you've been keeping up with this series then you probably know by now that The Keeper and Morgan haven't had the easiest time navigating their relationship. They both also come from backgrounds of not having the easiest lives either. If anything, their relationship isn't just fated mates, but it almost feels like star-crossed lovers at times. They're like two puzzle pieces that fit perfectly together and their banter, their angst, it was so good. Out of all the couples so far, they are definitely my favorite because of how well they're written, how similar yet different they are, and they way they love each other on such a wide and deep scale was everything for me.

With that being said, Morgan as a character hit me like a ton of bricks. Out of all the sisters, I resonate on a very deep level with Morgan's character. There's also a scenes, we see this happen a few times throughout the book, where Morgan will have her hair in a bun and out of anxiety she'll undo it and redo it. That was something that really hit for me because it's something I do when stressed or anxious. Not only that, but the way Morgan loves those close to her and how she constantly puts those people before herself also hit really close to home for me, as well. I knew I was going to love Morgan and feel very connected to her since the first book, but I was still surprised with how much I connected to her character in this book and it makes me love her so much. Plus, the deep bond between Morgan and Lou just filled my cup with so much joy and happiness. I'm really eager to see more of their relationship in the upcoming books especially with everything that happens in this one.

"She's so hauntingly beautiful, I can barely stand it. I'll never get to have more than what we have right now, but her hands on my body are utter, pure bliss."

As for the Keeper, I feel like I can't talk about him without spoiling major moments about this book. However, I adored his character so much, for a plethora of reasons. The way he loves Morgan, how long he's loved her, and how deeply he loves her was so lovely to see unfold. It was everything and seeing his and Morgan's similarities come together was everything. I also loved how the Keeper and Morgan got to a place where they had a lot of open communication with one another and consent played a huge role in their relationship. Also, I have to take this chance to address the Keeper's relationship with his one father, Betmal. I adore their relationship so freaking much! I'm getting soft and mushy just thinking about it. The way Betmal views the Keeper as the best thing to happen to him and way you get these little pieces of how close these two are, it was everything. Their bond was just everything and I truly hope with my whole chest that Betmal gets his happy ending because he deserves better than the Keeper's mother. Just saying!

"I'm his favorite. I was never anyone's favorite."

Despite all the good that I loved about this book, there were definitely some things that still have me a little wry and undecided about. The biggest thing that caught me off guard and I'm still trying to navigate my feelings on is the menstruation kink. While it makes sense of why the Keeper would have this kink, some of the dialogue and descriptions made me a bit queasy. I'm still undecided about this, I definitely wanted to address it because it's a very detailed scene. My other issue with this book was the role the castle took on later in the book. I- I'm still processing how weird this was. I think this is another element/situation in this book that a lot of readers are either going to really dislike or love. For me, I definitely didn't like it and what happens in this book will kind of change the context for all the other buildings in this series, as well. I definitely feel like I'm left with more questions than answers and while I'm all for polyamorous rep in books, in my opinion, this was definitely not the way to go about it. I think the person we meet in the epilogue would have been better for the polyamorous rep than what we got.

The final thing that stood out and I'm still unsure of how I feel is the way Morgan just seems to become this very powerful black magic witch. She doesn't struggle, she doesn't really have much challenges, we don't see her really work on growing her powers. She just kind of does and everything just goes smoothly. Even with Thea, there was a learning curve with Thea and even Wren struggled with her abilities. Morgan has nothing like that and it just felt odd that she's the only one who doesn't really have to put effort into her magic.

"I have loved you across space and time," he murmurs, moving to the back of my neck and kissing again. "I loved you before I even knew you. And now that you're here? There is no depth, no end of what I feel. I'm not a whole person, Morgan. I'm deeply flawed. But I will spend every day attempting to become someone worthy of such a gift."

Overall, I still really loved this book and seeing the Keeper and Morgan's relationship bloom was just everything I've been waiting for with this series. The wait for this book was definitely worth it and as I said, it's my favorite of the entire series so far. With Partying with Pixies coming in as my second favorite. This book has me so excited about Lou's book and I have so many questions that can only be answered with her story. Which, I know we're getting Richard's story next, before Lou's, but I'm so excited for the rest of the books in this series and I can't wait to read them all!

“I have loved you across space and time”

While I found most of the book enjoyable, there were a few things that left me feeling disappointed.

Additionally, there were certain elements of the storyline, such as the "Ben thing aka threesome with a house," that I found unnecessary and didn't particularly enjoy.

Overall, while there were parts I liked, but when I was done with the book, I couldn't help but feel a bit let down.😅

This was easily the book I was anticipating most in this series. I read the first one last year, and while I didn’t love it, I found the world and concept to be interesting enough. I ended up skipping books 2 & 3 as they weren’t characters I had much interest in, but was absolutely seated to see what became of the Keeper and Morgan.

As someone that skipped around in the series, I will say the book did a decent job of filling in the gaps of what happened between book 1 and now. I would say that really any of the books thus far could be read standalone and the story won’t suffer tremendously (it takes place over the course of a month after all).

On a positive note, I adored the moments of tension and longing we received between our two main characters. Even if it didn’t last too long, something about those chapters in the Keeper’s pov had me kicking my feet at the start. It’s also a vampire romance, so if you enjoy vampires it has some fun takes plot-wise. And once again, the setting of Ever is just really interesting. It almost feels like Halloweentown and I love the variety of monsters and magical elements. The spice is enjoyable the first few encounters, but I think it overpowered the development that these characters really needed. I felt like anytime Morgan & the Keeper started having an actual conversation, it quickly spiraled into spice over content. And while I understand they are mates, the story needs to breathe.

As for some things I didn’t enjoy, I found the ending of the book to be wayyyy too rushed. Wesley has been an antagonistic force for four books now (to my surprise) and he gets defeated in a few page fight. I also feel like the solution to Abe’s virus is solved too easily and it never held any weight or urgency despite being treated as such. I also hate that we get baited for a book focused on Lou, only to be abruptly filled in on Richard’s love interest in what is the next announced story. I imagine we’ll see Lou’s story eventually but I’m sad it won’t be soon when this book lays the groundwork for her character arc. The writing is also weak at times where words and/or phrases get repetitive when it wasn’t necessary.

Lastly, I want to talk about the castle…I’ve read and heard about some interesting things in books but this might be the worst because I don’t think I could’ve ever saw it coming. I couldn’t even read that chapter as my face was more stuck in shock than Lou’s when Wesley took over her body.

Vampires? Hell yeah.
Gargoyles? Sign me up.
Literally any other monster, why not?
BUT A SENTIENT HOUSE?????? Abe gives me the ick now and it’s all his house’s fault. Ever needs an HOA or something because my gosh. I even excused the period stuff.

In conclusion, it’s an easy read with a unique plot for anyone that’s a fan of the previous books or looking for some vampire spice. Or if you’ve always had weird fantasies about the house in Monster House, in which I kindly suggest you seek therapy. Will I read the next book? Potentially if the plot is of interest, but I’m more intrigued to see Lou & Dirk if anything.
