Suspense! Intrigue! Romance! What’s not to love? Check, check and check!!

”I don’t like you being back here,” he mutterd. “My life is different now. I don’t need a reminder of how things used to be. I don’t need to get back in that mud pit.”

”Believe it or not, I feel exactly the same way. My life is different now, too. And I’m not thrilled to be back in Chicago, but it’s only until we find Haley. Then I’ll return to New York, where I live.”

Nathan and Bree haven’t seen each other since they were teenagers, each having pasts they want to forget. Their once friendship ended badly, demanding secrets be kept.

Shockingly, Bree is now an FBI agent, and in charge of finding a little girl who was abducted in her hometown of Chicago, a hometown she never wanted to come back to for numerous reasons. One big reason... Nathan, who is all grown-up and seriously gorgeous. She also needs his assistance in finding the missing child.

”So, what’s it gonna be, Nathan? Are we gonna be friends? Enemies? People who once knew each other but really don’t want to have any thing to do with each other now?”

This is quite the pretty darn terrific, page turner with just the right amount of angst. The case Bree is assigned to is also a revenge crime, so made it even more intriguing.

”I’m glad you made it.”

”I’m glad you made it, too.”

”Let’s try not to mess up each other’s lives.”

Yep, great read! On to book three in this series ;)

I love a Barbara Freethy story and this one did not disappoint. This is the second installment of the FBI series, off the grid, and the storyline was on the fast track in the first chapter and the pace kept going until the end.

Need is an FBI agent who specializes in missing children cases and is called to the Chicago office to assist in an auction case involving a 10 year old girl named Hailey. She is resistant because she grew up in poverty in Chicago and there are too many memories that she would like to forget. She questions Bailey's best friend, Grace, hoping to get new clues. Grace's uncle, Nathan, is someone she knew from the old neighborhood. The two had feelings for one another but never acted on it. Their meeting is awkward and Brew wants Nathan to know she has changed from the girl he once knew 10 years ago. He too, wants her to know the same about him. Grace provides few clues and Brew acts on them, but finds she is in the crosshairs with Nathan. They soon realize that the abduction is tied to their past and they begin to work together to search for Hailey. More clues pop up as the kidnapper reaches out to Brew with clues in text messages. Time is running out and emotions are accelerated as Brew and Nathan learn the truth of the abduction.

I want to keep this spoiler free as this story really got going immediately. This author's characters are so strong, with a hint of vulnerability which you instantly connect. I would recommend reading the first installment before this, which also had a similar pace. Great read!!!!!!

Reckless Whisper is book two in Off The Grid: FBI by Barbara Freethy. FBI Special Agent Bree Adams caught a case of a missing girl in Chicago. On the first day in Chicago, Special Agent Bree Adams had to face her past when she encountered Nathan Bishop. However, a young girl is missing, and both have to join forces to find her. The readers of Reckless Whisper will continue to follow Special Agent Bree Adams and Nathan Bishop to find out what happens.

Barbara Freethy writing style always ensures that I engage with her books. Reckless Whisper did not disappoint, and I became involved with this book from the first page. I love Barbara Freethy portrayal of her characters and the way they interacted with each other throughout this book. Reckless Whisper is well written and researched by Barbara Freethy. I like Barbara Freethy description of the settings of Reckless Whisper and allow me to imagine being part of the plot of this book.

The readers of Reckless Whisper will understand the consequences of revenge and hatred on everyone who is involved. Also, the readers of Reckless Whisper will learn about domestic violence and how it can affect everyone.

I recommend this book.

Barbara Freethy is good at getting inside readers heads. Reckless Whisper is intriguing, complicated and chilling. Bree finds herself drawn into a web of deceit that has close personal ties. What makes this tale so scary is that the pieces to the puzzle are lying in plain sight, but putting them together is a confusing mind game. The twists are endless, the danger is far reaching and the thrills are nonstop.

I really love all Barbara Freethy's book and 'Reckless Whisper' is a very wonderful book it now fact the 2 books in this series are perfect. I like a romance with mystery.

When Bree Adams return to Chicago to help the FBI team in that city she she feels anguished for revisiting her sad past, her secrets. What she would never have imagined is that she was not only going to see herself face to face with the past as she would be with her friend, the only one who knows all her secrets but also has always had a piece of her heart.
Nathan Bishop keeps Bree's secret and other well-kept secrets. He thinks he will never meet the only woman who has ever occupied his heart.
When a Kidnapped Child brings Bree back to Chicago and they meet again not only the sadness and the secrets of the past return but the love and the attraction are back.

A wonderful and touching history.

Excellent Pacing, Suspense and Tension

The pacing of this story was excellent. I loved the mystery, the build up of suspense, and the tension/attraction. This was definitely a second chance love story and the characters have a strong, difficult history together. Break your heart difficult. It was so good to see them get a happy ending but it sure took a lot to get there! It was so good.
Content: some swearing. Sexual situations, early details that fade to black. Violence, peril.

I had a hard time believing that a so-called top FBI agent was so willing to let a civilian tag along and moreover, she didn't get in trouble for it. SMH A good story otherwise but short on believability.

My son got me started watching “Criminal Minds” on Netflix a few months back — I’d never watched it on network TV — so when I started reading RECKLESS WHISPER by Barbara Freethy, I was right at home with our main character, Bree Adams.

Bree is a member of a New York City FBI team that specializes in cases with kidnapped children. She’s been called into the Chicago FBI office to consult on a new case.

From the first anonymous call from the kidnapper that wakes Bree up to the final resolution, author Freethy had me on the edge of my seat. Freethy’s characters are so well-developed that it’s easy to understand Bree’s reluctance to return to her hometown and face her past. Secondary characters are just as interesting, whether they are fellow FBI agents, victims’ parents or old friends from Bree’s past.

Plan to read RECKLESS WHISPER in one sitting because I guarantee you won’t want to put it down. Then, go back and read PERILOUS TRUST, Book 1 in the Off the Grid series. You’ll first meet Bree there, but this book can stand on its own.

NOTE: I received an advance reading copy in exchange for an honest review.

Reckless Whisper is the second book in the FBI Series by Barbara Freethy and it was worth the wait!

I really enjoyed the story of Bree and Nathan. Bree and Nathan have a history, they knew each other back when they were kids trying to survive a rough childhood in Chicago. Nathan was there for Bree when she needed to leave Chicago. She moved on from her rough beginnings and became an FBI Agent. A case brings Bree back to Chicago, where she had planned to never return. She runs into Nathan while investigating the case and he helps her through the twists and turns of the case, they overcome their past.

This was a really great story. I enjoyed reading it just as much as the first in the series, Perilous Trust, and can't wait for the next one!

Best kept secrets

So much more to Bree then I expected from book one or this blurb and I loved it! The surprises and twists kept coming in this story. Great build up and plot to an intriguing kidnapping case that is not what it seemed from step one and a lovely second chance romance.

Bree was introduced in book one, but it is not necessary to red that first to appreciate this Tory. I loved how the group still was there for her, the being with Wyatt and the better introduction of another baseball teammate.

This book started out so strong and immediately hooked me and I did like the twists and turns but I didn’t like how the hero had a gf was was hooking up with her heroine. If that didn’t happen then this would’ve been 4 stars.

We all have times & places from our life that we don't want to revisit. What if a criminal forces you to revisit that time & you see what you remember isn't exactly what happened? In Reckless Whisper, that's what happens to FBI agent Bree Adams. The case she has been investigating involves a man kidnapping a young girl from what should be considered a safe place & leaving a white rose in her place. Bree & her team managed to rescue the last girl before she died. Now it appears that he has kidnapped a young girl in Chicago & Bree has been asked to go consult on the case. Bree had a terrible childhood growing up in Chicago & doesn't want to revisit it. Why is the killer starting to make this personal?

Nathan Bishop has come a long way from his childhood. He's a respected contractor living in a nice neighborhood. His sister is married, has a child & is no longer the junkie she was becoming in their old neighborhood. Now, his niece's friend is missing & it appears his old friend Bree is one of the investigators. They haven't seen each other in years. He didn't agree with the choices she was making & she knew he was pulling away for some reason. The attraction he never acted on is still there but now it appears she feels it too. How can he stay away?

Barbara Freethy writes wonderful romantic suspense stories. The plot is action packed & never dull. I know I couldn't put it down & kept reading "just one more page" trying to figure out what was going to happen next. Each book in a series can be read as a standalone but you end up getting hooked & read them all anyway. The characters are realistic & manage to grab your emotions from the beginning. Bree & Nathan were formed from their past but I like that their effort & fight came through in the way they've made something of themselves. Neither are defined from their past. Once again, I didn't see the ending coming & that's what makes Ms. Freethy's books so good!

I loved this book, especially Bree and Nathan. FBI Special Agent Bree Adams and Nathan Bishop grew up on the streets of Chicago and had a hard life. They were best friends and Nathan always looked out for Bree even when she was with a thug named Johnny. Bree just wanted someone to love her. When Bree was 18 she found out she was pregnant. She didn’t want Johnny to have anything to do with the baby, so Nathan helped her leave town. Bree went to Detroit and gave her baby up for adoption as she wanted a good life for her child.

It is 10 years later and there is a serial murderer out there kidnapping 10 year old girls and killing them. Bree has been lead on the case in New York. Then out of the blue the same thing happens in Chicago to a 10 year old girl named Haley with minor differences. Her boss sends her to Chicago to help on the case. She does not want to go back there and the Chicago office is not happy to have her. Bree goes to ask the girl that was with Haley some questions and Nathan answers the door. They are both shocked to see each other. The girl she is there to question is Nathan’s niece.

This story is suspenseful with turns and twists in the plot. I love this type of book. My heart went out to both Nathan and Bree as they had to relive some bad memories to try and solve the case. There was a silver lining as Bree and Nathan leaned on each so it brought them together. The facts that came out were surprising. Bree handled everything so well, and I was glad to see a few good things came out of the kidnapping. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series! I strongly encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book.

Bree Adams left Chicago and never wanted to return. Now as an FBI agent specializing in finding abducted children, she is called back to Chicago to help the FBI office there find a child that was abducted in the same way children in other cases she work on had been. Perhaps her perp has relocated from the Northeast, perhaps it's a copy cat, or, perhaps there is a much more sinister reason for this kidnapping.

Bree heads back to her hometown, and immediately runs into people she thought she'd never see again. When the Chicago FBI office finds out she's going out on her own to try to find the missing girl, they bench her. They don't know the secret that she's kept for years, and that only a handful of people know. Will this secret be the one thing that can save the child, or will it be the one thing that will seal her fate?

Can Bree trust people from her past? Will long ago friend Nathan Bishop be able to help her find the lost child or does he just want to keep his niece, the only eye witness to the abduction, safe? Nathan had always cared for Bree, does he still?

This is the second in the newest romantic suspense FBI series by Barbara Freethy. The story draws you in almost immediately. There are almost too many possible abductors as the book goes along. I truly didn't see 'who done it' until just before the big revelation! It was a fast paced story and I didn't want to put it down! A fabulous HEA with concessions by both the H/h to make their dreams a reality. Loved it!

FBI agent Bree Adams is assigned a case of a missing child. The case appears to be the work of a culprit who has done this before. The case is in Chicago, the last place Bree ever wants to go back to. Bree soon finds that this case has ties to her past in Chicago, a life she thought she had left behind. Now she has to confront her past and share a long held secret to save a child’s life.

This is the second book in the Off The Grid series but it could stand alone. The book is very well written and moves at a good pace. It is full of twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next. I would put this book in the romantic suspense category. There were a couple of aspects of the kidnapping that didn’t get answered but I expect they will be in the next book in the series Desperate Play coming in June. Thank you to the author for an advanced readers copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I love Barbara Freethy's books...especially her romantic suspense. This book doesn't disappoint. Bree and Nathan had difficult childhoods and grew up together in Chicago. It's been 10 years when Bree, now an FBI agent, returns to Chicago because of a kidnapping. Nathan is now a successful contractor. They are both connected to the kidnapper and the victim and the sparks are definately still there. They come together to find the kidnapped little girl and end up rekindling their relationship.
This all results in an excellent story...but what takes it up a notch for me is how Barbara Freethy takes us through the secrets of their pasts...especially Bree's. She handles her secret..and the resultant dilemma with an empathy and heart that I loved. And I'll admit to a few tears.
I highly recommend this book!!

As usual Barbara Freethy delivers! Romantic suspense is my favorite type of book to read. This story is about an FBI agent, Bree Adams, who has to go back to her old roots to solve a crime. She works at finding missing children and is called to Chicago to help investigate a case related to ones she has been working on. There are lots of twists and turns in this story, some predictable, some not so much. She reconnects with Nathan, someone she met on the streets when she was much younger. Together they go in search of a missing girl. The story is very well written. I highly recommend this book!! It is actually the second book in a new series that Barbara Freethy is writing, but can be read as a stand alone. Characters from the first book are mentioned, but not actually involved in the story.

Another hit, which is not a surprise. I loved the mystery, suspense and romance. This book draws you in on the first page and doesn’t let you leave. I didn’t want to read this so quickly, as I wanted it to last, but I finished it in two days. Barbara has a way of writing that you can picture all the scenes and characters in your mind. It was like watching a movie. This is book two in the series and although it can be read as a stand-alone I highly suggest reading both books. As always leaves you with a few questions and leaves you wanting more, but you know it will come in book three. Recommend for anyone who loves mystery and suspense along with some romance thrown in. Read it, you will not be sorry. 5+ stars for sure.

You will love Reckless Whisper. From the first sentence of the book until you end, you are on a suspense filled ride. I loved it and couldn’t put it down. Bree is an FBI agent who specialty is finding kidnapped children. She is sent to Chicago, where she grew up to help out on the kidnapping of a little girl. Bree grew up in Chicago and had vowed never to return. She has horrible memories of her life in the windy city and a huge secret from living there. In Chicago she meets up with an old childhood friend, Nathan, who helps her try to find the kidnapped little girl. He is the only one that knows her secret. Together they must return to their past in search of clues for finding the little girl. This is such a good book from start to finish. Highly recommend it.

Can you go home again?
Bree Adams is an FBI agent specializing in child abduction cases, the last place she wants to be is back in Chicago. Bree grew up on the streets of Chicago and disappeared under extenuating circumstances, so going back when a child is kidnapped brings back all the bad memories. It also brings Nathan back into her life.
Nathan has always loved Bree and this time he wants to lay it all on the line but first he has to help
Her find who is stalking her and help her find the kidnappers !
I absolutely loved this book ! I loved Bree and Nathan past and present . This book hooks you in from the first chapter and it’s a wild ride to the end.
This is one of my favorite series and I can’t wait for book 3!!! Thank you Barbara Freethy for an outstanding story !

Barbara Freethy has written a suspense filled psychological thriller with so many twists and turns that it kept me reading far into the night.

FBI agent Bree Adams and Nathan Bishop grew up together. Both were from dysfunctional families and had questionable childhoods. Bree returns to the place where she grew up to help the local FBI staff find a little girl who has been kidnapped. When she and Nathan cross paths again, he finds that he still cares very much for Bree and he can’t stop his protective instincts from taking over.

Somebody is playing mind games with Bree. Is it the kidnapper, or is somebody else “gaslighting” her?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ms. Freethy has become one of my favorite authors. I would give this book 10 Stars if I could.
