In the summer of 1955, Lester Finger was hired to coach football at tiny Phoenix Christian High School. The school had never played a football game and there was no field, players or equipment. If anyone would have said that in four years, Christian High would have a State championship football team, they would have been judged out of their mind. But it happened. A mirage in the desert turned into a faith-based miracle on the gridiron as revealed in the pages of Gridiron Phoenix Christian’s Miracle Football Seasons that is filled with nearly 500 photographs and more than 200 newspaper clippings.John Culea (class of 1960), a member of the team in 1957-1959, shares personal, sometimes tragic, and dramatic stories of coach Finger and those who were part of the miracle from the school’s beginning to what some say was the biggest upset in Arizona high school sports history.
