So, this should really be a one star read but it was so comically bad that I gave it an extra star because the ridiculousness and awfulness made me chuckle sometimes.
The main issues were related to a lack of editing, plot cohesion, and a lack of understanding of Football and American culture.
I’m not sure if this author is from the United States but I have limited interest in Football and know there were issues with the way she talked about the player’s positions. Additionally, states don’t have Mayors so Tyler’s dad knowing the “Mayor of Florida” makes no sense.
Moreover, this book honestly kind of reads similar to the pay-per-chapter novels that are supposedly set in the US while feeling completely different culturally. Honestly, it felt like some of the Asian-based story apps that are set in the US with supposedly American characters but with more Asian-based cultural customs. As many people have mentioned, the constant use presence and use of all three names was weird. It was also weird that people who were older than Riley or were Tyler’s teammates were referring to her as Miss Maddison Sullivan/Miss Sullivan/Miss Riley until she allowed them to use her first name. This definitely felt out of place culturally. The characters also spoke in a weirdly formal way that almost reminded me of regency era interactions or as if it was translated from a different language which resulted in wording being odd.
The plot points in this book are also just wildly ridiculous to the point of feeling almost like a k-drama. The author constantly jumped from one outrageous scenario to the next. After reading the first couple chapters I had to go back and make sure this wasn’t supposed to be a Stalker romance because of the vibes Tyler and his journal entries were giving off😅. There were a lot of heavy topics discussed in the book and I don’t think they were always handled well or given the appreciation they deserved. For example, randomly throwing in suicidal thought and intent at the end felt so out of place and just glossed over.
Almost all the characters felt like ridiculous, over-the-top cartoon imitations rather than actual people that would exist. It was hard to suspend my disbelief at times. Additionally, the editing was horrific. I don’t mind a typo here or there but this was consistently a problem throughout the book. At times Chase’s name was accidentally replaced with Tyler’s name, it seemed to briefly switch POV in the middle of a conversation for a couple lines, and just general typos/odd phrasing that didn’t make sense or was awkward at times.
Overall, this just really didn’t do it for me and the surprise addition of the cringe daddy kink did not help. I will be skipping future releases from this author unless some drastically changes.
