A collection of stories by authors who have written Sherlock Holmes stories elsewhere, and who have combined Holmes with H.G. Wells's stories for this collection. Some were pretty good, the rest just ok. The book really needed someone to go through and correct typos and occasional sentence structure mistakes. I almost gave it 2 stars, but some of the stories deserved better than that. I probably won't be getting Vol 2.

An unusually strong collection of Sherlock Holmes pastiche stories. I say unusual because as a frequent reader of non-canon stories, I know what to expect. The intersection of Holmes and Wells' works much better than most of the other Baker Street crossovers available. Aside from a shared time and place, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle shared with Wells an interest in science fiction and futurism. While Holmes overshadowed Doyle's Professor Challenger works, these stories give a hint of what might have happened had Doyle allowed SF into the world
of Holmes.

This was another dependable collection of Pastiches, but with a focus on the terrific creations of H. G. Wells. Except a few duds, most of the works (including the foreword from Mark Levy) were crisp, compact and refreshing. My favourites were~
1. Emma Tonkin's "The Pigeon's Nest";
2. Stephen Herczeg's "The Curious Case of the Sleeper";
3. Michael Siverling's "The Manor House Horror";
4. Daniel D Victor's "An Adventure in Darkness";
5. John Linwood Grant's "The Affair of the Red Opium";
6. Derrick Belanger's "A Matter of Some Gravity".
Overall, an enjoyable collection. Recommended.

Really very good. A brilliant collection of authors with in-depth knowledge of both Holmes and Wells. Many stories mesh both worlds so seamlessly that the reader would think they were never separate universes.
Will be starting Volume 2 soon.

One of those books I wish I could give half star ratings to, because it’s not really worth three but it’s better than two (but barely).
I enjoyed several of the stories in here, but some of them didn’t quite hit the mark. But that’s to be expected in any collection of short stories by a group of authors.
Mind you...there were two or three stories in the book I just could not finish.
But...
The real problem in this book lies in its editing. There is really inconsistent punctuation, from story to story – and sometimes even within a story. Completely inconsistent quotations and lack of commas in one of the stories. That kind of stuff really sets my teeth on edge.
And when you run into this in the first couple of stories in the book, it sets a bad tone, and no matter how good some of the other stories are, they’re dragged down by association. I kept waiting to find more bad punctuation and evidence of more poor proofreading. When that happens, you really aren’t going to enjoy the stories as much as you might have otherwise.
It’s sloppy ... and when you’re talking about a book - where it’s not a one-day or a one-hour deadline - it’s unacceptable. It’s almost like the editors just accepted the stories from the authors and didn’t really proofread them or check them for spelling, grammar or punctuation – they just stuck them in the book and published it.
That’s unfortunate because I really like the concept of the book and some of the stories in it.

The fusion of HG Wells' stories but using Sherlock Holmes as the protagonist is just pure astute brilliance. It brings a rare faceted perspective that enchants the reader. A truly alluring read this is.

A mash-up that doesn't really work for me. Didn't feel Holmesian or Wellsian.

I have previously read volume 2 of this series: https://www.goodreads.com/review/edit... and am looking forward to this volume. I likely will be disappointed with some stories, but I liked more than I disliked in the volume I read previously.

story 1 is a good one. Both with good Holmes characterizations and the Wells War of the Worlds atmosphere.
Story 2 is okay. Not as familiar with the Wells aspect but the Holmes aspect was rather Bland. Basically, after hearing the whole case at 221B Holmes says, "Yes, I read about Wells theory and that's obviously what happened." Boooring.
The stories seem of a higher quality then the previously read volume and the authors' seem to have a handle on both the worlds of Doyle and Wells. One story even had references to many of Wells' stories - sort of a "Wells multiverse" of sorts.
