A great start to the series!

I wouldn't say this is my normal type of preferred fantasy novel, but I really enjoyed it. It's a pretty quick read, something you can easily sit down and finish in a weekend, which is a nice break from some of 500+ page monsters that are really popular right now. It's gritty, fast-paced, action-packed, and the writing itself is really good.

The story follows the mercenary Cas as he wanders into a town on the edge of the desert. Cas is injured, alone, and only has two silver coins to his name. We don't get to learn a whole lot about Cas as the book progresses, but that only makes me want to know more about him. He's mysterious, taciturn, and is no stranger to violence. We get a few breadcrumbs about his dark past which I hope are explored in more depth later in the series.

Cas's main objective is to earn enough gold to get out of the city and move on. Luckily for him there are not one, not two, but three wizards in town gearing up for a big fight who are hiring mercenaries. Cas keeps changing sides, earning a bigger and bigger payout each time until things kind of blow up in his face. I'll let you read it to find out exactly if or how he manages to get out of trouble. There is a large cast of side characters, many of whom are unique and memorable. My favorite out of all of them is Synnoire. This book feels like an introduction and sets the stage for more to come.

If you enjoyed series like The Black Company or Game of Thrones, you may also enjoy this book!
