This children’s book isn’t just good—it’s extraordinary! From the moment I opened it, I was completely blown away. The illustrations by Noah Warnes are spectacular—vibrant, captivating, and full of whimsical details that make every page feel alive. There’s a timeless charm in the art that speaks straight to the heart, and each stroke tells a story all on its own. It’s the kind of book that you and your child will want to pore over again and again, finding new delights each time.
But it’s not just the visuals that make this book a standout. The content is a genuine treasure trove of biblical truth, perfectly aligned with Scripture from start to finish. I received a copy of Jesus Moment: Moses from The Good Book Company. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on how true the book is to Scripture, along with an assessment of the illustrations, writing style, pacing, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
This is a unique series and I’m glad to see more books are being added to it! What an important skill for kids to be able to have at a young age: to see how every page of Scripture points ahead to Jesus Christ. This series allows kids to be exposed to, understand, and exercise that Bible study skill within the pages of a beautifully illustrated and engaging picture book.
Kids will often hear of these “heroes” of the Bible, but how much better if they understand the True Hero of the Bible that all those stories are meant to point to! As our family has read this book, we have had the opportunity to discuss many questions about both the Israelites and Jesus. I highly recommend this book, especially for elementary aged boys!
Thank you to Good Book Company for a complimentary book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
This is a beautifully written (a great read-aloud book) storybook about Moses and the Israelites. It begins after they have crossed the Red Sea and the army of Pharaoh has been destroyed. The book covers with some emphasis and detail (though not gory) the 40-year period of wandering. Most young children's storybooks don't give this much information. Also, as a "Jesus Moments....Finding Jesus In the Story...." book, the deeper theological connections between Old Testament and New Testament (Moses and Jesus) are made in a very understandable methodology for young readers and listeners.
Given the increased detail in the story, very young listeners in the four to six year range may lose interest or miss the connections.
I absolutely love this book as well as the other Jesus Moments book, "David," that I previously reviewed. The concept of presenting where Jesus or the promises of Jesus are found in the Old Testament is fairly new for the age bracket audience of picture books.
In "Finding Jesus in the Story of Moses" we see several incidents that occurred during the 40-year wilderness journey. In each of these there is the opportunity to look for "bulrushes" which indicate that there is a "Jesus Moment" to look for on that page. This engages the child and produces involvement and opportunity to teach further details.
I love the illustrations and the readability of the story itself. The grumbling of the Israelites is really captured and God's disapproval and His patience shown.
I highly recommend this series for your age 5 to 10 year olds.

If you look carefully, you can spot “Jesus moments,” throughout the Old Testament. “These are moments when someone or something in the story is a little bit like Jesus.” Jesus Moments: Moses by Alison Mitchell with illustrations by Noah Warnes takes kids through the life of Moses, while pointing out where you can find Jesus in his story.
The beginning of the book instructs kids to keep an eye out for hidden bulrushes, because when you see one, then you know you’ve spotted a Jesus moment. After explaining to my daughter what a bulrush was :), she enjoyed this aspect and it helped to keep her interest. This story reads more like a history book than a storytelling book, so my 5-year-old did lose interest at times, but overall she enjoyed the seek-and-find aspect and the illustrations.
Right at the start, as we see the Red Sea crashing down, we are introduced to a grumbling people who experience many Jesus moments during their time in the wilderness. The Lord provided manna, just as Jesus provided food to thousands of people. The Lord gave Moses the Ten Commandments, just as Jesus spoke of God’s commands to His followers. Unfortunately, we also see the grumbling Israelites build a golden statue and complain against the Lord about only having manna. Thankfully, we have a wonderful God who is merciful and forgiving. “So let’s not be grumblers like the Israelites! Instead, let’s be grateful to our rescuing and giving God.”
This is the second book in the Jesus Moments series, and there are some things I really enjoyed about this one, more so than the first. The story starts after the Israelites have crossed the Red Sea, and deals with their 40 years in the wilderness. We hear their grumbling, see them worship a calf, experience their fear as Moses’ face shone brightly, and learn about the bronze snake on a pole. Children’s stories don’t usually deal with these parts of Moses’ story. Very often they end at the Red Sea, leaving children to believe the Israelites immediately entered the Promised Land. There are some hard parts in this story that deal with sin, and I appreciate that this book explored those moments, while showing that there were still Jesus moments amidst the grumbling. God was always protecting them; He was always rescuing them. Kids will learn about the character of God, revealing Him to be merciful and forgiving, as well as a promise keeper. Our Great Rescuer! We must love and obey God and turn away from sin and towards the cross.

This unique Old Testament storybook shares snapshots from Moses's life, focusing on what happened after God parted the Red Sea. At the beginning of the book, the author explains that if you look closely, you can see parallels to Jesus in different Old Testament stories. She encourages kids to look for hidden bulrushes in illustrations, because these each signal a "Jesus moment." This seek-and-find detail appears on four pages, and the target audience of elementary-aged kids will enjoy this added element.
Throughout this book, Allison Mitchell describes some of Moses's experiences leading the Israelites through the wilderness. Because so many books about Moses start with his birth and end with the Exodus, it's nice that this book takes a different approach, covering other elements from his life. This book deals with some hard moments related to sin, with the creation of the golden calf and the story of the bronze snake, instead of just focusing on the highlights. I felt that the treatment of these harder parts was somewhat rushed, and parents may want to provide additional context. Overall, the book shares a clear message about how God forgives and rescues His people, and pages at the end make connections between aspects of Moses's story and the story of Jesus. The book briefly explains the gospel before the end.
This is the second book in a new series that teaches kids about how Old Testament stories point to Jesus. In some ways, I thought that this was better than the first book in the series, and in other ways, I felt that it fell short. The seek-and-find element is less effective in this book, since the bulrushes blend in as part of the natural scenery, while the crowns in the book about David could appear in more creative ways throughout that book. This book has higher-contrast illustrations than the first, but there are still some more monochrome pages that won't show up as well in a group read-aloud context. Overall, I think that this is a good book, and I would recommend it to Christian families and churches who are looking for a dynamic, gospel-centered book that covers less acknowledged aspects of Moses's story.
I received a free copy from the publisher, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I received Jesus Moments: Moses compliments of The Good Book Company in exchange for my honest review.
Jesus Moments: Moses is the latest title in the Jesus Moments series by The Good Book Company. This helpful book teaches little ones about biblical typography in Moses’s story. In this book, children look for bulrushes throughout to identify Jesus Moments. A Jesus Moment, the book explains, is, “. . . when someone or something in the story is a little bit like Jesus.”
This book teaches children how God provided for His people during Moses’s lifetime with freedom, food, and ultimately, Himself. While many children’s books and Bibles focus primarily on the Exodus when considering Moses, this book does that and more. Seeing the inclusion of the account of the bronze serpent from Numbers 21 in the book excited me as it’s a particularly important Jesus Moment in the Bible.
As my husband read this book out loud to our kids, my five year old was captivated by looking for the bulrushes, and having something to do while she was being read to led to her paying attention. While Jesus Moments: Moses is a children’s book, I’ve been blessed by it as an adult and even made some new whole Bible connections! I appreciate, too, how the book emphasizes God’s character. We love the Jesus Moments books and can’t wait to read the forthcoming titles in this series.
Our family is loving the Jesus Moments collection of books, and this new addition - Moses - is fantastic!
It’s a fun, interactive book that kept my daughter (age 6) engaged, by visually searching for special bulrushes images as we read to her. Each bulrush marked a “Jesus Moment” in the story. About two thirds of the way through the book, the book asks children if they spotted each of the Jesus Moments, explaining that certain things in the story of Moses and the Israelites time in the wilderness compared to a moment of Jesus’ life on Earth. Each of the moments are then explained in simple terminology and points readers to the salvation message, making this a valuable resource in our home. We loved that it seamlessly and simply tied both the Old and New Testaments together in an entertaining way that was easy for young children to grasp.
This book covers God’s provision of everything we need, how He rescues us and His deep, unfathomable love for us despite our sinning, time and again.
With vibrant, expressive illustrations, this book offers thick, durable pages and a solid hardcover. It comes highly recommended from our family to yours as an interactive book that would be great for any child’s library, but also for children’s ministry programs, in homeschool, or a private school.
* I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.
We're so excited for this second book from the Jesus Moments series!
A lot of stories about Moses are about how God used him to bring His people out of slavery in Egypt. I love how this book tells of the times AFTER escaping from Pharaoh and his army across the Red Sea, and covers what the Israelites have gone through in their 40 years of wandering in the desert. And as usual, I appreciate the way Alison Mitchell makes the connections between Old Testament heroes with our ultimate hero Jesus, in a way that is understandable and engaging to young readers. My kids 5 and 7 both love this series! I've also used this series in our preschool-kindergarten Sunday School classes and all the children engaged and enjoyed. We can't wait for the next book to come out!

We absolutely loved “Jesus Moments: David: Finding Jesus in the Story of David,” so I was thrilled to see another book come out about the story of Moses.
These books are so incredible. I love how these beautifully illustrated stories teach kids about important Old Testament stories and figures, while also reinforcing that the whole Bible points to Jesus. The Old Testament and the New are all about Him!
This story shows kids different ways that Moses and his life point to Jesus and points children to the gospel at the end of the book.
We’ve added this to our stack of books that get read daily!
Picking up from the moment that Moses and the Israelites have already crossed the Red Sea, this book tells of the context of how they got there and the incidents following as they roam in the wilderness. The cycle of God's people complaining and sinning against God is evident even in this short retelling from Exodus. Yet despite this, the author invites readers to look for the Jesus moments throughout the story of which we can catch a glimpse of situations that are similar to or remind us of Jesus.
The interactive bit to look out for the bulrushes as a hint that there is a Jesus moment on a particular page of the story, helps to engage young readers more by giving them something to look for.
A picture book retelling of moments from the wilderness wanderings of Exodus, highlighting times when Moses' actions paralleled what Jesus would do in the future, and showing how the Old Testament stories point to Jesus.
An excellently done Bible story picture book. It gets to the heart of these stories kids will likely have heard in Sunday school and goes deeper into why they were included in the Scriptures. The illustration style is attractive as well. Highly recommended to Christian families, schools, and Sunday schools. Note that the book does include the story of people being bitten by poisonous snakes and a tactfully illustrated crucifixion scene.
Well done! Tying the person and ministry of Moses to the Person and ministry of Jesus is not only a great idea, but the format makes looking for the hidden clues like a reading adventure!
Really love the books in this series. They are so applicable to kids and lives today. Small Jesus moments are everywhere and I am glad we can relate to God's long ago plan today!
Pictures are big and colorful and so captivating. The hardback is perfect.
