Checkmate!

Minalan the Spellmonger has come a long way since he woke up to a goblin invasionalmost a decade ago. Since then he has built cities, mighty armies, invented newenchantments and pioneered entirely new fields of magic. Now that the Witch Queen ofDarkfaller has taken over one of the most powerful castles in the center of the kingdom, he has to marshal all of his resources – political, military, and arcane – to try to drive her from the strategic and symbolically important stronghold. It will be the most difficult military operation the Spellmonger has ever attempted – and he cannot fail. The future of the kingdom and all of humanity may well depend on his victory.

To complicate matters, the King and Queen have asked him to do the take their son and heir to the throne, Prince Tavard, and try to tutor him in statecraft, wisdom, and perhaps some common sense. As Tavard has always hated Minalan and seen himas a threat, this proves to be a challenge even the Spellmonger shies away from. He makes a counter-proposal to not just tutor Tavard, but also his three closest rivals to the throne at the same time.

But that is not all – matters with the Sea Folk are coming to a head, he is still trying to recreate the incredible snowstone spell, the gods seem to be conspiring against him, the refugees from the far north are arriving, and the civil war he started in neighboring Merwyn is beginning to stall. And his wife is having a baby – three weeks early.

Years of political intrigue and military preparation comes to a head, as Minalan embraces his role as Preceptor, the maker of rules for all of the complex games ofpolitics and war he is playing. Enjoying power that no wizard has had since the Archmage, he has taken the responsibility for ordering the kingdom, his armies, his wizards, and the very gods themselves with his powers both mundane and arcane. For he has learned that those who have the power to make the rules must also bear the responsibility for how they are followed. There is no higher call to duty for a wizard whodares to be . . . a Preceptor!

To begin, let me say that I've been waiting with great anticipation for this one, and I really liked it. So, I gave it 5/5 stars. That's the good news.

The bad news is, this is one of the weaker books in the entire series. It felt rushed and disjointed.

The first third of this book continues from where the last book left off and forms the completion of the Korbal cycle. I don't want to give away anything, but it felt forced, and to quote one of the characters, "it feels too easy". For the first time, in all the Spellmonger books, I felt less than satisfied. Something really BIG happens at the end of the climactic battle that, to me, seemed pointless, and unnecessary, only serving to introduce one of the three duck Gods. (For those who don't know what I mean, there are 3 brother deities in the book whose names are hilariously close to Huey, Louie, and Dewey). It almost feels like this was intended to be in the previous book, but was cut out to reduce the size.

The 2nd and 3rd parts of the book seemed there to 1) wrap up major loose ends and 2) foreshadow the things to come and get us prepared to move in a new, and potentially darker direction.

However, the entire PREMISE of the book is a story that could have and maybe should have been a stand-alone novella and forms a relatively small part of the MIDDLE section of the book, wherein Minalin becomes a life coach and channels his best Mr Miyagi, teaching a bunch of Dukes to wax-on and wax-off. Cute and humorous, this felt like a separate story... which then later culminated with an ominous intervention meeting between Minalan and the Duke of Alshar.

The final section of the book really felt like a big transition to show us that things are changing drastically going forward. It seems the future books will be shifting their focus, with new villains, new threats, new quests, and locations.

So, overall, yes, I liked this. I liked it enough for 5 stars. It was not a waste of time. It serves as a good bridge from the way things HAVE BEEN to the way things WILL BE in future books. I just think that may have been better done by extending the previous book and adding a fun and humorous novella about Minalan and the 4 Dukes.

All that said, I'm going to go read it again now.

I’m biased to enjoy most entries in this series, that’s what happens by the time you reach book 16. However, that aside I think Preceptor is a thrilling installment on its own.

Terry Mancour allows the consequences of magic in his world be real. The growing ability of Minalin and the magi don’t go unnoticed. Preceptor wrestles with the question of checks and balances on magic and Min as real questions instead of abstract forebodings.

I feel like the 3 books before this one could've been smashed into a single book, so it was nice to have a book that felt like it was its own.

I fear Mancour stating that the series will be 30 books long is a hindrance, in that he has to stretch it out. Just advance the plot, and please stop repeating stuff.

4.5 Stars 🌟

We are well over 20 books into this series (with the books, and the short stories) and honestly, I am just as excited every time I see a "New Release" as I was in the very beginning. I have truly fallen head over heels for the zany yet brilliant Spellmonger and his crazy antics. I start each new book eager to see exactly what kind of trouble he is going to get into this time.

If you have not read any books in this series, THIS NOT A STAND ALONE! Stop now and go find the first book in the series and start there. You will not be disappointed. It does take a little while for the book to find its rhythm, but once it does, it is an AMAZING ride.

Now, we find Minalan given the daunting task of bringing the 4 young Princes from the realm together to try to teach them how to be leaders. It doesn't make it any easier to know that one of the Princes - Prince Tavard - hates his guts and has been responsible for many of the awful things that have happened to Minalan in the past couple of years. Unfortunately, when the King tells you to do something....well, you kind of have to do it.

At this point, we have an established world, and many, many secondary characters that have grown and developed along with Minalan. And the Spellmonger is truly coming into his own. If I'm being honest, he has been maturing quite well for the last several books. Unfortunately, the problems he is now facing have grown in scope and in danger as well. It is a bit crazy to see how powerful he is becoming. Each book seems to have him acquiring new powers and abilities and his friend group now includes most of the gods from the pantheon. Not bad.

BTW- John Lee has been the voice of this series from the very beginning and as usual, he did a fantastic job.

I enjoyed the heck out of this book and was truly sad when I realized that it had ended. I'm pretty sure that Mr. Mancour could write another 30 books and as long as he keeps up the level of talent that he has shown for the first 20, then I am in this for the long haul :)

Usual..... Greatness.

This is one of those times that I felt well enough, had time enough, and was wise enough to illustrate the fundamental greatness of the current Spellmonger novel. Alas, I am tired, sick, and honestly a shell of the person I was once; the person who defied a difficult, mediocre to lousy, start in life stumbling from the Army (and combat) to stride the hallowed halls of an Ivy League school. To go from less than zero to 100 miles an hour in business while still in school.... And then those choices I made along my life , the right or only ones to make at the time ended up blasting my life to pieces.

Min, well he had a better family but not a rich one.... He went through worse war, and similar schooling, and WANTED a quiet life ... BUT was able to see the need, adapt to the need, and exceed the wildest expectations ever dreamed - because that was what was required to win. Win for everyone, at sometimes steep Costs to himself - even while gaining power and money not for glory or greed but as a tool to protect himself and his "people".

I wish I could say just how much it means to me that Min is flawed even as he is superhuman. Some of the cracks of war ran deep.... But he at least manages to soldier on.

The books are funny, entertaining, and evocative treatises on personal and political thought.... But not preachy.

Min is certain to save the day, and certain to bleep it up too.... Probably at the same time. The story will be deep, but riveting, thought provoking and shallow boyhood humor all rolled into one. Min is a hero and just a guy, and that's why we love him.

Really fun continuation of the series. The book quickly launched into military action and then spent most of the rest of the time on political maneuvering and other worldbuilding updates and developments. Mancour did an excellent job keeping my interest and I'm pretty amazed at how fun it was to read something that very easily could have been boring. Looking forward to the next book!

Best fantasy series i've read in a long time, terry mancour maybe not as well known as Sanderson but i find myself enjoying the spelmonger series way more than all the books Sanderson has put out the last couple of years, i would rather give my money to Terry's Spellmonger then anything brandon has written since the first skyward book, and that says a lot.
Although the series starts slow and a bit silly at times (the ending of the first one is a bit cringy), the books somehow keep getting better and better (at one point you realise that instead of a fantasy, the series is actualy science fiction, and it is mind blowing how well he pulls that off in the context of the worldbuilding), i'm 20 pages in and the book is still better than all 3 books in The five warior angels series (the last series i've read and DNF at the last few pages), wich felt like a chore to go through.

Anyway, if you are thinking about buying and starting a new book series this one is the best one out there right now.

I love the his series and I especially love the way John Lee narrates it for the audio book. I can’t get enough of Callidore and the adventures of the spellmonger.

I kinda wish there was a more decisive blow to Korbal but I guess this will have to do.

Isili coming back to the picture is just infuriating.

I can’t love Alya anymore than I already do.

I want to come back as Lilastian in my next life 🤣

Interesting but

Terry Mancour has a great story he has been developing for years and over a ridiculous number of books now.

The issues as usual are format and typos. But moreso the past 3 books he has had overlong endless arguments that serve little purpose but to be filler to match a length unnecessary for the story.

After the point is made, the characters all get stubborn and then there is 5 minutes of introspection then return to the argument for another few pages. It is just incredibly drawn out conflict between people that should have come to agreement or agreed to disagree. We don't need every argument to last 10 to 20 pages when the issue resolved naturally by the 3rd.

And Pentandra... she is constantly in conflict with her character development to a point of blatant hypocrisy and bizarre stubbornness to maintain the status quo at all costs in every argument while it is well shown and known that she was a reformer as well, not in line with the chivalry and views the Narasi with disdain. But for the past several books it is incessant arguments not to upset the order, don't rock the boat, and appease the chivalry. She can argue caution and restraint without having become the champion, in extremely drawn out arguments, for the chivalry.

But these are more or less nitpicks for a great story. It was interesting that he placed the climactic action at the halfway point and spent the rest of the book in development, that wouldn't work for a single novel, likely not for a trilogy except perhaps the middle one. But in such a long series with so many books it does seem to work for setup into another novel as Terry never stops writing.

Terry Mancour does it again!

While other authors flounder on their 3rd book in a series, Preceptor shows the same heart, humor and honor that captured our attention in the original Spellmonger. He’s fighting the battles no one else can win with his High Magi, who’s main talent seems to be competence rather than magic. All the while the political class accuses him of wanting their jobs. What is a highly competent and now deeply insightful wizard to do? Add in some magical surprises, because how could the unexpected not occur when mixing divine and arcane magic with childbirth a magic city and thousands of magic sensitive folk? What could go wrong? Anything less would be disappointing.

Read #16 and and place your problems on hold for a few pages. It’s fun to catch up with Tyndal, Dara and the gang too. Besides, Min’s problems and solutions will bring a smile to your face.

Felt like this book helped to rebound the series after a few disappointing but still good books. Still had some bloat to it, with the odd side story that wasn't needed. Regardless, the world is interesting, Miralin is fun to follow along with and the action was strong. Knowing that the author plans on this series going on for roughly 30 books, it made sense that he keeps stringing on storylines - like how the goblin and necromancer threats are now toned down, allowing for them to come back later - and still introduce new threats

Spellbinding😊

The Spellmonger series is up there with the Lord of the Rings, the Shannarah series, Jeff Wheeler, the complete Draeken series by Ben Hale, and the Echoes of Fate collection by Philip Quantraille. The whole Spellmonger series is outstanding to read, the writing is of the highest calibre. Thoroughly enjoyable reading, with so much detail put into each book, it needs to be read to appreciate how much he has you totally spellbound and how his mind works to create such amazing storylines👍 Unfortunately, all good stories/series do come to an end😥 however, looking forward to his next project😊

It's actually about a 3.5 for me. This one felt like a bit of an interlude. It wasn't boring- but it was like one of the novellas where we get to see what all happened before we got to a major plot point. Like Tyndal protecting his masters wife before the wedding. It seems like we should have gotten the next long book about the upcoming confrontation with a short novella about the snow stone spell and the handmaiden awakening- I still love it all. This one was just a bit off and odd in its pacing. I can't wait for the next one though don't mistake me.

Amazing

Terry, thank you for creating an amazing rich story. I didn't see myself here about 2 years back when I started reading through the Spellmonger's journey yet now I wait for every morsel of Minalan's story one consonant and vowel at a time be it novella or full on Mancour 800+ novels that just seem to read shorter and shorter the more of this world I read. So once again. Thank you, for your sophisticated world building, quick one liners, and by the gods all of the food scenes.

almost backwards

So it starts off with armed conflict and kind of peters out into setting up future issues. It peaks early.

Still awesome. Unexpected events keep changing the playing field.

One actual criticism: the title gets thrown around a lot, as if someone learned a new word and wanted to show it off. It was on point for the MC, but almost ridiculous how much it was used.

This is thick with intrigue and plotting. Really well written.

Alright, so I just finished "Preceptor" by Terry Mancour, and let me tell you, it's like the ultimate value-for-money book in the series. This one does a fantastic job of explaining, wrapping up loose ends, and adding exciting new elements to the mix.

I mean, after you've gone through so many books in this series, it's hard to say much without giving away all the juicy details. But I can say this – it's a solid read, and if you've been following the series, you're in for a treat.

good continuation

I love this series and this book continues it well, however it feels very rushed at parts. I’m not sure I like the perspective of narration throughout much of the book as well. This author writes very interesting and fun characters that you really enjoy seeing, but this book seems to skim by most of the interactions with them in favor of lots of detailed writing about politics.

Preceptor: Book 16 Of The Spellmonger Series

Terry Mancour is one of my favorite authors. The Spellmonger Series is one of, if not the best series I have read. It is so well written and so engrossing, I feel almost as if I was there.
Magic, battles, really evil bad guys. Humor. What more do you need?

Start with the Spellmonger and keep going.

This book is amazing, as the 16th book in the series, this marks a turning point in Minlan’s journey. We are now spreading out from the rather small portion of the world that Minlan has resided in, and are preparing the move out to the father flung regions of the Spellmonger’s world. New foes are introducing new problem. Minlan’s is now directly effecting politics and politics far beyond the reach of Castelalshar. This book will not disappoint, and yet has the closest to cliffhanger in the Spellmonger series, lots of things are going on in the end of this book in a lot of different quarters. I plan to read this book several more times to ensure I am prepared for the next installment.

This is an amazing series

I've read countless series, but the spellmonger has all the elements of a great series, with the central character growing in strength and developing a few weaknesses.

I especially like the references to the past techa being interwoven with magic.

It should result in a stunning conclusion.

“The key is to understand that your job isn’t to push information into their tiny little minds,” he said, thoughtfully. “It is for you to set the conditions and provide the resources so that they can learn it, if they have the desire. And then you encourage that desire by explaining how important it is, and hope they agree.”

Another great addition.

Amazing book also spoilerery

I won't lie. I felt like a bit of a quick wrap-up for the korbal issue. But the slide into political divine and vundel issues felt really great. Love it.

Another Great Chapter

Really enjoy the Spellmonger series and Terry Mancour delivers great books with consistency.

Great action and set-up in in this one. My favourite parts are always the little things. His conversation with his dad in this one got me.

Another hit!

Mancour manages to make a long book seem short. A long drawn out story seems interesting. I am never without a desire to learn more and Min and his adventures, his wisdom, and his strategies. I enjoy this series greatly and can't wait for the next 14 books!

Already wanting more and can't wait

It was a little fast pace with the battle and we are given political shifts and questions to ponder from major future plots to simple customs and new species we met before. It felt slow in parts as we are given exhibition

Enjoyed the story

The problem with complex stories is to keep them moving forward coherently, the author does that quite well. This has been a great series. Probably going to reread it at some point to solidify the people places and milestone

Excellent addition to the story. Developing the lore and world building mixed in with battle, intrigue, and some unexpected twists. Was good to see more of the gods getting involved. Will be good to see where it goes from here.

Liked that one a lot. After some books I had trouble relating to Minalan I could with this one. I liked his special Dukes project. It made me feel like finally Minalan as we knew him at the beginning of the series is back.
