This is my review for all three books in the set together, the complete story. Okay so the good thing - fully, completely embraces the same-sex relationship between Korra & Asami that was only ever implied in the show, and runs with it hard. Perfect. Amazing. No notes. So good to see, absolutely beautiful, could've been three books about just that and gotten five stars.

I also liked the political focus and the continuation of how this series looks at real world effects and consequences, even the mundane stuff. Like wow, a big portal to the spirit world opens up in town - okay so who's land is it, what about the guy with property rights in the city? I love it.

The downside of this book was the other main plot about the gang threat, and the guy who got some spirit powers even though that's not how it's ever worked before. And I mean regardless of that, it was just some gangs. Compared to four seasons of amazing villains, when the gangs in town have only ever been mentioned as mooks or background setting... having them be the antagonists was pretty disappointing. Like one of those dissonant moments where, like, in one comic Spider-Man is in space battling some cosmic threat and then the next issue he's, like, trading punches with a mugger or something. Yawn.

Overall though, not bad.

Picking up a few weeks after the series concluded, Korra and Asami are back from their vacation, and Republic City has changed yet again. This time, a spirit portal in the middle of the city is a battlefield as businessmen, peaceful protestors, and street gangs all fight for control of this important place.

The subtle, almost plausible denability, ending of the last season, is blown past as this makes it clear from the jump Korra and Asami are a couple. It does a great job of showing different aspects of people's reactions, but also gives us more world building as we get information on how the four nations all culturally handled same sex couples. All the familiar faces are back but a lot with different dynamics like Bolin being Mako's partner on the force or Varrick taking a back seat to Zhu Li, the forefront of which is Korra and Asami's relationship.

While it does ramp up, it does feel very low stakes at first which I cannot tell if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Dealing with street gangs and explotive politicians isn't at the same scale as the final season's invasion by Kuvira's forces. It is still good and left me wanting more and doesn't answer all the questions by the end but it is a great start.

This was a very cute graphic novel!! I looove the avatar universe (and am a dedicated rewatcher of both animated series), so this was right up my alley. Of course, all characters we all know and love made an appearance (special shoutout to Varrick and Zhu Li my lovelies), and there were some interesting new characters as well (including a crystal bending lady)! Otherwise, the some of the plot lacked depth, especially the gang-centered plot line, which sadly also influenced the depth of the villain related to that (or the lack thereof). And because it is almost pride, there is some nice queer representation!! #korrasami4ever!!
