Better known for his surreal films El Topo and The Holy Mountain filmed in the early 1970s, Alejandro Jodorowsky is also an accomplished writer of graphic novels and a psychotherapist. He developed Psychomagic, a combination of psychotherapy and shamanic magic. His fans have included John Lennon and Marilyn Manson.

Jodorowsky - podobnie w komiksie, jak i w filmie - szokuje często nagością, seksem i surrealnym okrucieństwem, bywa, że i kazirodztwem. Czasem także kompletnie bezsensowną przemocą i swego rodzaju kultem zła. Fabuła Juana Solo wydaje się nieco bardziej skomplikowana psychologicznie, mimo że występują w niej wszystkie typowe dla Jodorowskiego elementy. Tytułowy Juan od dzieciństwa chce sobie radzić sam - czyli solo. Po tym, jak został odrzucony przez rodziców, sam odrzuca wszelkie więzy - nie istnieje dla niego przyjaźń, miłość ani lojalność. Służy gangsterom, pnie się po drabince okrucieństwa, eliminując konkurentów i kolegów, aż sam popada w niełaskę.
Rozumiem, że prosty meksykański chłop nie zna wartości diamentów, ale pozostanie dla mnie tajemnicą, dlaczego prostytucja jest lepsza, niż diamenty także w mieście. W drugiej części obserwujemy już nie awans, ale stopniowy upadek bohatera. Najciekawszy jest motyw wymuszonej (?) ekspiacji wzgl. samoofiarowania się niewierzącego w nic człowieka wyimaginowanemu bogu w imię ochrony wierzących w niego dobroczyńców - prostych Indian. Ale on tę ofiarę też chyba traktuje raczej jako wyzwanie rzucone temuż Bogu - to jakiś rodzaj pojedynku, komiksowej Wielkiej Improwizacji.

Jest lepiej. "Ciało i trąd" wygrywa intensywnością, z kolei "Święty łajdak" to już kierunek w stronę biblijnego odkupienia. Symbolika tak jednoznaczna, że aż boli, ale z jakiegoś powodu działa. Chyba dlatego, że ten komiks jest świetnie zrealizowany. Słowa ograniczono do absolutnego minimum, fabuła sunie płynnie, dynamika całości sprawia, że opowiada się samo

A classic Jodorowsky tale of sin and redemption. This book is violent, sexy, and well-played. Definitely more cohesive than his other works. Also, if you haven't read The Incal yet, it is a must-read if you are working your way through the Jodorowsky cannon.

Things start to get a little funky in book 2 but Jodorowsky brings it all around together. Bess still brings his best and illustrates some amazing scenes. Truly a hidden gem.
