"Quand'ero ancora una fanciulla, mi pareva che la mia voce fosse costantemente soffocata dai rabbini e dagli anziani, che volevano le donne in casa, a badare ai bambini. Non potevamo leggere la Torah, non potevamo pregare insieme con gli uomini come loro uguali".
La verità di Maria comincia qualche giorno dopo la conclusione di La quarta profezia . Se si è abituati allo stile di Glenn Cooper siamo di fronte al suo solito romanzo: intrighi (e serpi a non finire) in Vaticano, con Cal Donovan e suor Elisabetta Celestino protagonisti assoluti.
Tuttavia, lo ammetto (e mi dispiace dirlo): Cooper ha scritto decisamente di meglio, questo non rientra tra i suoi migliori lavori! Un romanzo che, viaggiando molto sulla falsariga del più celebre Il codice da Vinci di Dan Brown, mi ha molto deluso: carina la parte "moderna" con Cal ed Elisabetta abili nel districarsi tra mille problemi, ostacoli e pericoli, molto noiosa (e per nulla coinvolgente) la parte "antica" con, al centro, le fantasiose vicissitudini di Maria Maddalena (moglie di Gesù, moglie di Pietro, papessa, ecc.).

Um intrigante mistério que envolve a Igreja Católica e alguns dos seus segredos mais profundos e que nos leva por uma jornada cheia de suspense e revelações surpreendentes.
Ao longo da narrativa, o autor combina factos históricos com ficção, cria uma atmosfera envolvente, fazendo com que o leitor se sinta parte da investigação.
Com uma escrita cativante e acessível, explora questões profundas sobre fé, poder e moralidade, tornando a leitura empolgante e também reflexiva. A cada página virada, somos desafiados a questionar as verdades estabelecidas e a refletir sobre os limites da fé e da instituição religiosa.
Gostei muito. Quero muito ler mais do autor e com o Cal Donovan.

Glenn Cooper, MD, who also graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a BA in Archeology, is a dynamic writer who presents extensive historical research in his dialogue-driven, internationally best selling novels, created another page-turner in, “The Lost Pope,” an intriguing dual-timeline novel set in 1st Century Egypt and current day locales in the US, Egypt and Vatican City.
“The Lost Pope” is based upon the hypothesis that ancient papyri texts, discovered by chance in modern-day Egypt, confirm not only that women played important roles in the early Christian Church—as apostles, deacons, ministers and missionaries—but that Mary Magdalene succeeded Simon Peter as the second pope in Rome.
When rumors of the Mary papyrus circulate throughout the highest levels of the Vatican, it’s Catholic conservatives are irate, knowing that such heresy will set their followers on edge throughout the world. Feminists will want to be ordained as priests and the whole structure of their faith could change dramatically.
Consequently, unrest spreads through the College of Cardinals and others of influence, so they condone teams of covert operatives to seek out the text for determining its authenticity and preventing it from becoming public knowledge.
There is extensive historical information incorporated into this novel, and I was entranced from beginning to end. Of course, there’s much of the ancient story that’s spun entirely from Glenn Cooper’s brilliant imagination. Furthermore, “The Lost Pope” is presented as an intellectual endeavor, not one of those heavy action thrillers that jump around constantly with more shoot-outs than archaeological mystery.

I do love a little Christian fanfic as a thriller/mystery a la DaVinci Code to mentally escape -40.
Spend some time in an alternative history + solving a mystery around Harvard and the Vatican?? Yes yes I will. It’s got thrill and mood and a handsome professor with a trust fund and some special connection and he just can’t help but be right in the middle of a mess. Oh no!!

Dopo che il nuovo Papa ha scelto come segretario di stato una donna, si crea scompiglio nelle cerchie più conservatrici del Vaticano.
Oltre a crearsi diverse situazioni per farla dimettere, un'altro fatto crea turbamento, e non solo, tra la gerarchia vaticana, quando viene ritrovato un'iscrizione funebre risalente al I secolo d.C. Un documento che rivela fatti scomodi che riguardano la Chiesa.
Ad aiutare il papa in questa situazione è l'investigatore Cal Donovan che abbiamo ritrovato anche in altri romanzi dell'autore.
Glenn Cooper ci cattura sin dalle prime pagine in una storia di intrighi e misteri, con fatti che si incastrano perfettamente tra di loro, la sua scrittura è scorrevole e, nonostante gli intrecci di tre situazioni diverse, non vi è alcuna confusione nel leggerla, anzi tutto è equilibrato e facile da comprendere.
La storia parte da fatti realmente accaduti, a cui poi l'autore alimenta con la fantasia portandoci a leggere un thriller degno di nota.
Insieme all'investigatore scopriremo verità a noi sconosciute, risposte a domande rimaste in sospeso.
Lo consiglio.

4 estrelas!
Gostei muito da minha primeira experiência com um livro de Glenn Cooper.
Aqui está um excelente exemplo de um bom thriller histórico, que nos ensina muito através do equilíbrio perfeito entre a narrativa do presente vs a narrativa do passado.
É um livro muito elucidativo sobre religião, procedimentos do Vaticano, colecionismo, entre outros temas. O principal claro, sendo a religião e o papel da mulher enquanto praticante da fé cristã no mundo atual
Quero ler mais do Glenn Cooper, principalmente esta saga que tem Cal Donovan como protagonista principal.

Una buona storia, avvincente con dei bei flashback di 2000 anni. Ancora una volta il Papa (amico di Cal Donovan) si mostra ben al di sopra della realtà essendo davvero un progressista, così come nei libri precedenti. Che sia un invito?

“Cal Donovan, l’uomo che sussurra ai Papi” questa frase ad inizio libro mi ha fatto molto ridere. Perché se nei libri precedenti Cal diventava amico intimo di Papa Celestino qui, lo ritroviamo col nuovo Papa con cui già intratteneva un rapporto d’amicizia prima della sua elezione.
Ma subito dopo mi sono indispettita perché ho trovato delle incongruenze con il finale del libro che cronologicamente viene subito prima di questo “La quarta profezia”. In quel libro -Spolier - dopo la morte di Papa Celestino Cal va a trovare suor Elisabetta in ospedale, la vede senza velo e scopre che lei ha i capelli Neri proprio come lui se li era immaginati, ora in questo libro, dopo l’elezione del nuovo Papa i due si rivedono e lui nota una ciocca di capelli di lei che sbuca dal velo e scopre che sono neri proprio come li aveva immaginati! Ma come??? Non li aveva visti da poco??
Inoltre sempre nel libro precedente lui le confessa di provare dei sentimenti per lei e lei dice che se ne era accorta.
In questo libro invece e’ come se tutta quella parte non fosse mai avvenuta, tanto che Cal chiede alla sorella di Elisabetta che si e’ accorta che lui ne e’ innamorato se anche Elisabetta se ne è accorta! A me ste cose fanno letteralmente girare le scatole. Ma proprio tanto!
Ma veniamo al libro, stavolta il nostro professor Donovan si trova alle prese con un papiro dal contenuto rivoluzionario per la chiesa.
Papa Giovanni XXIV si è appena insediato e ha nominato Elisabetta Celestino segretario di Stato, e’ la prima volta che questo ruolo non viene assegnato ad un cardinale, e, soprattutto e’ la prima volta che li riveste una donna.
La notizia fa scalpore, i cattolici progressisti ne sono lieto mentre i conservatori lo osteggiano.
Tra loro Cunliff, magnate americano e fanatico userà’ tutti i mezzi a sua disposizione per affossare suor Elisabetta.
Nel frattempo, guarda tu il caso, una ex studentessa di Cal scoprirà un papiro con un testo potenzialmente rivoluzionario per il cattolicesimo.
Da qui tutte le vicende che ne conseguono, il filone della storia segue sempre il solito schema, Cal si trova coinvolto nelle indagini e il suo intervento risulta alla fine decisivo per la risoluzione.
Aver letto due libri cn il professor Donovan a distanza di pochi giorni l’uno dall’altro non ha sicuramente giovato al fine del suo giudizio.
Questo mi pare sia il sesto con il professore più ambito di Harvard come protagonista e ormai le varie dinamiche sono talmente prevedibili che nulla mi sorprende.
Come avevo profetizzato dopo il libro precedente Cooper sta mettendo le basi per un futuro interesse amoroso tra Donovan e suor Elisabetta, probabilmente vuole aggiungere un tocco di novità a un storia ormai in stallo, ma io storco ugualmente il naso. Questa piega decisamente non mi convince. Insieme alle incongruenze trovate ad inizio libro proprio non ci siamo. Per fortuna il libro scorre e si legge senza troppa fatica.
Ma subito dopo mi sono indispettita perché ho trovato delle incongruenze con il finale del libro che cronologicamente viene subito prima di questo “La quarta profezia”. Maria Magdalena. Pontiful uitat", tradusă la @editura.niculescu, este un thriller istoric ambițios ce pleacă de la o premisă interesantă: aceea că Maria Magdalena ar fi deținut un rol extrem de important în istoria religioasă, și anume rolul de pontif, acordat chiar de către soţul ei, Petru, primul papă, după moartea lui. Dovada este inscripționată pe un papirus vechi din secolul I, descoperit întâmplător într-un muzeu din Cairo, ce reprezintă centrul acțiunii cărții, acțiune ce pendulează între trecut (Egiptul anului 68 d.Hr.) și prezent, un prezent marcat de numirea unui nou Papă, cu viziuni progresiste, care alege drept secretar al Vaticanului o femeie ! Astfel, oameni politici corupți, cu sânge rece, pregătesc înlăturarea prin orice mijloace a noului secretar şi a persoanelor care cunosc existența papirusului, dar mai ales doresc ascunderea papirusului care ar putea schimba pentru totdeauna religia și istoria, prin simplul fapt că arată că încă din vechime, femeile ocupau posturi de conducere.
Cartea este bine documentată, abundă în acţiune, are multe personaje importante pentru poveste și atinge teme actuale, precum feminismul și modurile oribile în care femeile au fost (și încă mai sunt) tratate de-a lungul istoriei, corupția celor aflați la putere și influența lor asupra religiei, istoriei, politicii, și chiar ordonarea unor crime în numele a ceea ce ei consideră "corect", piața neagră a obiectelor valoroase.
Cartea m-a ținut într-o continuă alertă, având o intrigă bine construită, personaje inspirate din trecut, dar și din realitatea prezentului, intrigi politice actuale, detalii interesante despre confecționarea măştilor funerare egiptene, papirusul fiind unul dintre materialele preferate de cei care nu își permiteau pietre prețioase. Am savurat tot ce tine de istorie și am stat într-o continuă tensiune pentru soarta personajelor. Este o carte realistă, arată cum puterea și corupția îşi întind tentaculele și distrug vieți, manipulând istoria și percepția publică.

There have been a number of gospels not accepted as part of the canon of the church. The Gospel of Mary is one such example. Depending on which book you read, Mary Magdalene was either a harlot or a casual follower of Christ. Some books maintain she was a consort of his.
This book allows that she was the wife and passionate follower of Simon Peter and an enthusiastic follower of Jesus. She was instrumental in preaching the gospel and message of Christ.
The Nicene Council in 324 was more interested in keeping the teachings of Paul and the four primary gospels. An old funerary mask, however, discovered a snippet of the Gospel according to Mary which would point her out as being the second pope after Simon Peter.
The piece of her teachings found in the mask infuriates some current day Catholics. Those interested in maintaining the status quo want to disavow the piece of papyrus. Some of those historians and scholars wind up dead!
The entire book is mesmerizing! Research and fiction interwoven into a gripping novel told in two timelines. Thoroughly engaging. 5 stars – CE Williams

Loved this book! So much history and that's always a plus for me.
A dual timeline story, it tells about Mary Magdalene in Jesus' time in a vastly different role than what we think of, and a bit of papyrus scroll that confirms this. Fast forward to the present, where a young, Harvard educated woman, finds a bit of the scroll when she was commiting a crime. From the Vatican to the Ivy League at Harvard, this story begins a bit slowly then takes off and keeps your interest as you follow Cal Donovan, Harvard professor, as he attempts to figure out what happened.
The story begins as a disjointed tale of many people and then the skill of the author is able to bring all of the loose ends together in a fabulously thrilling story.
This is book #6 in the Cal Donovan series. I've never read this author before, but I love a good thriller and I think I have some Glenn Cooper reading to catch up on!

The title intrigued me and I figured what the heck, if it is a dud, into the DNF pile it goes. I was hooked within the first two chapters, and it became a rapid page-turner. A 1st-century papyrus fragment is discovered, which could radically change the Catholic Church. A Harvard professor wants to reveal it to the world, while an ultra-wealthy conservative Catholic wants to bury it forever. That is just the broad plot, as there are plots within plots. While it occasionally delves into quite technological points, they are well described from a layman’s view. Quite frankly, it is one of the most fun reads I have done this year.

This is my first Cal Donovan novel and I'm hooked! I loved the story, the characters, and the relationships between them as they are peeled back like an onion the further you read. Glenn Cooper does a great job of giving us a take on alternative history that many female Christians probably would appreciate by giving the patriarchal system a wake-up call.
I can't wait to read his other books and to see what Cal gets up to in future sequels.

This book offers an intriguing mix of alternative history, mystery, and Christian intrigue, set against the backdrop of Harvard and the Vatican. The plot is suspenseful, with a handsome professor caught in a web of secrets and hidden connections. While the premise is fun, I found the story a bit predictable, and some twists didn’t fully captivate me. It’s an enjoyable, quick read, but it lacked the depth I was hoping for.

Io adoro le avventure del professore Donovan e il modo di scrivere di Cooper che mi ricorda molto quello di Butticchi che divide la storia tra presente e passato. Questa volta la storia si sviluppa appena dopo la proclamazione del nuovo papa e Cal si troverà immischiato nel ritrovamento di un antico papiro che potrebbe rivoluzionare la visione della figura della donna nel mondo della chiesa. Tra omicidi, scandali e figure losche si sviluppa la storia. Una lettura molto fluida e non è necessario conoscere le avventure precedenti del protagonista per poterla comprende e affrontare.

È il secondo libro di Glenn Cooper e della serie con protagonista Cal Donovan a cui mi approccio e anche questa volta non sono rimasta delusa. La scrittura è scorrevole ma curata, la vicenda molto coinvolgente, sia nelle parti al presente che in quelle del passato. Non ho letto i libri nell'ordine corretto, ma sono riuscita comunque a capire le vicende dei protagonisti ricorrenti, per cui è consigliato anche a chi magari non ha mai letto altro della serie.

Mais um livro bastante marcado pelo contexto social dos EUA. No entanto, bastante interessante e de leitura agradável. Senti que demorou bastante a chegar às partes mais "viciantes" do livro e a organização não me pareceu a melhor, muitos dos capítulos são desnecessariamente longos e poderiam ser separados em vários.
Recomendo a quem se queira aventurar pelos thrillers, mas aviso já que há outros bem mais emocionantes ;-)

Non ho letto altri romanzi di Cooper, ma anche di questo avevo letto buone recensioni, e davvero non ne capisco il motivo. La storia si basa su una teoria pseudo-scientifica che tira in ballo la Chiesa e il Vaticano, e questo è probabilmente l'unico motivo di curiosità. Per il resto la vicenda è poco interessante, i personaggi non sono sviluppati, il complesso è scadente.

Terrific Mystery
I was fond of the religious element and historical angle. I liked the way it jumped in time. It was never confusing and well done. Good characters. The language was top notch. I appreciate that. And there was a bit of humor. Overall a fun read. Will look for other books by the author.

Am Amazing Truist Story
The way the author developed each of the characters made it easy for me to hear each voice. The way he developed the relationships, brought me moments of joy... and moments of shared pain.

I am not even mad at this book anymore. To be mad you should care, and honestly I don’t. I care I lot time reading this, but it was a gift, and I really wanted to give it a fair chance, little good it did for me. But… yeah. Don’t lose your time.
