Surviving the Volcano

Rate this book
The true-life adventure story of one of the world's leading volcano experts. In 1993, Stanley Williams was investigating Galeras, what he thought was a dormant volcano in Colombia. But it blew, killing nine members of his expedition; against all odds Williams survived. This book is both the scientific story of how human beings have tried to tame these pipelines to the centre of the earth and the terrifying tale of what it is like to be caught up in a volcanic explosion.

I hope writing this was cathartic for Stan Williams. What I’d like to know is what those who accused the vulcanologists of “volcanic terrorism” when they were trying to initiate evacuation plans in the event of an eruption had to say after Nevado del Ruiz killed 23,000 people. Most of them, who were concerned about the danger of falling property prices, were probably too dead to say much I guess. It’s impossible to predict volcanic activity but taking some precautions when you live in the shadow of the things seems a no-brainer

A great book, didn't want to put it down. When reading you can imagine the scene very vividly, the narration is excellent. I actually had a nightmare based on this book with scenes from the book ending in my dreams!
