Rina Martin #9

Meet Rina Martin, a retired actress with a taste for tea, gambling, and crime solving. She played a TV sleuth for years, but now she has to do it for real.

Rina's friend Bridie Duggan is tying the knot! At a majestic country house on a private island, Rina and thirteen other guests row out for the ceremony. One of them has murder in mind....

You know when characters are on an island that there's going to be some kind of storm that prevents them from leaving and someone ends up dead. It all becomes a bit predictable. The pace is on the slow side. The ending of the book felt a bit rushed. There's also quite a few characters to remember, and they all have criminal backgrounds. There are some really good twists and red herrings.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #JoffeBooks and the author #JaneAdams for my ARC of #MurderAtTheWedding in exchange for an honest review.

DNF - I read about 4 or 5 chapters and have absolutely no clue what is going or who any of the characters are. I imagine you need to read the prior books in order to have a clue. #MurderattheWedding #NetGalley

Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC.
This book was not for me, unfortunately; it was very confusing in the beginning, so many names and people! Even after the first murder I still couldn't get into it and rushed through to the end. Pity, I generally enjoy this author's books.

Meet Rina Martin, a retired actress whose most famous role was a TV sleuth. Rina’s friend Bridie Duggan is getting married at a majestic country house on a private island. Rina and thirteen other guests row out for the ceremony. The next day, Rina’s out exploring the island when she hears a blood-curdling scream. She races down the twisty steps to shore only to find a dead body! A storm is rolling in on Bridie’s perfect day. Now there’s no way on or off the island.
This is the ninth book in the series & I feel it would be best appreciated if earlier books had been read, also a list of characters would have helped as there are quite a few to get your head round & I found that after a couple of chapters I went back to the start & started again. I really like Rina & thoroughly enjoyed the book especially as the tension built throughout. The characters are well portrayed & have depth & the pace is good. There are, of course, twists & turns before the denouement
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I love a murder at a wedding story. Shades of Laura Durham. Cannot wait to read more from the author.

The pace was moderate and steady with some complex twists and an exceptional red herring or three. The characters are well developed and the suspense builds. A fine read.

I chose this book because the premise sounded good. I'm sorry to say that I found the pacing of this book very slow and drawn out.. I had a hard time keeping track of who all the numerous characters were. Perhaps if I read the previous books, I would of enjoyed it more.

Enter into the world of suspense and secrets with Jane Adams' "Murder at the Wedding," where the idyllic setting of a grand celebration unravels into a riveting tale of murder and intrigue. Rina Martin, the retired actress turned accidental sleuth, takes center stage, captivating readers with her wit and tenacity as she navigates through deception and danger.

Adams weaves a web of suspense that begins with the joyous occasion of Bridie Duggan's wedding but takes a dark turn when murder crashes the celebration. The isolated island, the stormy weather, and a killer among the guests set the stage for a whodunnit that even the most devoted mystery enthusiasts will relish.

As Rina discovers the lifeless body and the storm traps everyone on the island, the plot thickens, and so does the sense of danger. Adams builds tension, making every twist and turn more thrilling than the last. Just when you think you've unraveled the mystery, another layer is revealed. This kept me guessing until the very end.

Adams brings her characters to life. Rina Martin, with her tea-drinking habits and penchant for solving crimes, becomes a character you can't help but root for. The supporting cast adds depth and complexity, each with their motives and secrets that contribute to the overall suspense.

In the midst of the mystery, Adams peppers the narrative with descriptions of the island and its surroundings. I felt immersed in the atmospheric setting. The stormy weather becomes a metaphor for the brewing tension and danger.

"Murder at the Wedding" combines the charm of classic whodunnits with a modern flair. Adams' writing is engaging, and her storytelling is a tribute to the enduring appeal of the genre. Prepare for a journey where every revelation is more surprising than the last, and where the line between guest and suspect blurs in the most intriguing way.

"A thrilling island escape laced with mystery, where love and betrayal collide at a wedding that turns deadly."

"Jane Adams weaves a web of suspense, transporting readers to an enchanting island where vows are exchanged, and secrets are buried."

"In the grand tradition of Agatha Christie, 'Murder at the Wedding' delivers a spellbinding tale of murder, mayhem, and matrimony."

"Prepare for a page-turning whodunnit that keeps you guessing until the final reveal, a captivating blend of suspense and classic mystery."

"Rina Martin, the accidental sleuth, shines in this atmospheric thriller, where the idyllic backdrop conceals a sinister plot."

"A stormy island, a glamorous wedding, and a deadly secret -- Jane Adams crafts a tale that leaves you breathless and guessing."

"Immerse yourself in a world of intrigue, as Adams skillfully unravels a murder mystery against the backdrop of a picturesque celebration."

"With every twist and turn, 'Murder at the Wedding' unfolds into a gripping narrative, marrying elegance with danger."

"Jane Adams' latest masterpiece invites readers to an unforgettable ceremony where love, lies, and lethal intentions take center stage."

"A classic whodunnit with a modern flair, 'Murder at the Wedding' is a captivating dance between romance and suspense that will leave you craving more."

ADVANCED KINDLE COPY REVIEW

I previously reviewed a Jane Adams novel in August of this year - awarding a scathing 1* to "The Lost Daughter" due to a combination of prior knowledge being needed to make sense of a fifth instalment entry in her Ray Flowers series and an appallingly slack style of writing.

It was with some trepidation therefore that I opened this ninth entry in the Rina Martin Mystery series....the opening paragraph rankled ..."...it would cost him his own life..."...who else's life would be personal to him? The second echoed the poor writing standards that grated in my previous review with three easily avoidable "and's" in the opening sentence, which ended with ..."...their boss"...ahead of the next sentence which opens with the same two words...again easily avoided - or am I just nit-picking?

There are another three "and's" in the next sentence ...there are then two sentences which start with the bloody word...AND I'm only on page two...this could be a long, long read.

So, into Chapter 1 proper and there's an entry referencing..."...., Mike's 'coffee table man'..."...I didn't recall there having been a Mike mentioned to date so I turned to the Kindle Search facility... it's the only mention of a Mike in the whole book apparently - I'll accept that as a typo for "Mac" who, to date, has been the main character in the narrative... which given this is the "ninth Rina Martin Mystery" is interesting as so far she (I assume it's a female name - no clues either way so far) has only been mentioned in passing as being one of a group of people due to attend an imminent wedding...Kindle is my friend as another search shows the name coming up with much greater frequency as the novel continues (and it also confirms that it is a female character.)

The soon to be bride had a chequered past due to her previous relationship which I can only assume gets covered off in previous books - it's taken until Chapter 4 for me to get told that Rina plays a TV detective but I'll be honest I'm still confused as to the how's and why's of the other members of the supporting cast, or how they fit into the life of our lead policeman. I'll be scoring this novel as a stand alone and therefore the lack of clarity will be a negative (and the "and's" continue to flow annoyingly unabated..."Bridie and Tim and Joy" for instance is instantly improved with a simple comma between the first two names...it's not rocket science).

Ignoring the implausibility of a leading policeman being best man at a crime lord gathering there is a decent enough story being told here. For followers of Ms Adams, and there must be a few given the number of books involved to date, I'm sure the soap opera elements play out nicely, but for a first timer there's too much head scratching about past events, relationships and implications.

I skim read from the third of a way in point, to see how it hung together but I didn't really get much enjoyment from the process.

I'm going to do the imprint, the author and myself a favour and not volunteer to review any future titles...once bitten, twice shy sort of thing

A wedding is to take place between Bridie Duggan and Reggie Fitch. Bridie’s deceased husband headed a known criminal gang, but she had never had anything to do with it. Detective Inspector Sebastian McGregor (Mac) is to be best man. He and his partner Miriam are good friends of Bridie.

A few days before the wedding, Mac is summoned to the office of Bradley Cotton, the Chief Constable, he is concerned that Mac is going to attend the wedding. He says the Duggan family are known criminals, but Mac insists that Bridie is clean. However, Cotton hints that he wants Mac to keep an eye open for anything untoward. He is worried about a turf war breaking out as opposing members of a rival criminal fraternity will also be in attendance.

Also going to the wedding is Rina, the T.V. sleuth, and Mac and Miriam’s close friend, together with the two Peter sisters and the Montmorency twins. All four of whom are all residents in Rina’s large house. Other close friends of Bridie, also known to Mac and Rina, travel down with them in a minibus.

The wedding is held in an impressive eighteenth-century venue set in large grounds and built on an island reached via a ferry. On arrival Mac and friends learn of tunnels underneath the house, but are assured they have all been sealed up – but have they? Events lead them to believe otherwise.

It becomes obvious that there is great rivalry between some of the wedding guests. After the ceremony Bridie and Fitch leave for the airport, and quite a few of the attendees leave too. The rest are to stay the night.

The next day while walking in the grounds, Rina and Mac hear a piercing scream, and come across a dead body. It soon becomes clear that it was murder.

Then a ferocious storm hits, the rain is torrential, all the roads become flooded, and the ferry cannot run. So, the police reinforcements are unable to get through.

Mac and Rina do what they can with the help of the venue’s staff, to protect the body and keep it dry. However, this is only the beginning of the horrors, soon there are more murders. How can Mac and Rina hope to solve all these on their own? How long will it be before the storm abates and help arrives? Is anyone safe?

I do enjoy Jane Adams’s books about Rina and Mac, and this one does not disappoint. Really thoroughly recommended.

It’s quite the coach party that heads to Milbourn House in Staffordshire for the wedding of Bridie Duggan and Reggie Fitch. DI Sebastian MacGregor (Mac) is there with his partner CSI Miriam Hastings, together with retired actress Rina Martin, famous for playing the tv detective Lydia Marchant and her household of retired performers the Peters sisters and the Montmorency twins. Also there is Bridie’s daughter Joy, her fiancé Tim, and her friend Ursula and boyfriend George Parker. Since the death of Bridie’s criminal husband Jimmy, a case solved by Mac, the whole gang have a great affection for the woman who is now on the straight and narrow. And nothing says “we have gone legit” like having a copper as your best man! Unfortunately old ties means that plenty of their former associates have to be invited, including the Brewsters, a family in a state of flux after the death of their head, Malcolm. His former right hand man Regis Crick has formed an uneasy alliance with the half son Ruari. Determined to oust feuding brother Charlie and sister Mia, they’re heading for the island and the house where the ceremony is to take place with murder on their minds. After undercover cop DS Terry Pritchard witnessed the execution of a man by Crick, the powers that be want Mac to be on the lookout for any trouble or possible problems between the different firms present amongst the guests. At least the wedded couple manage to get off on their honeymoon before the first body is discovered. With roads flooded and local police unable to reach them, Mac, Miriam and Rina will have to take charge of the investigation as best they can until help arrives.
After eight previous stories the main characters need no introduction and have been through much together with makes them all very close and loyal to each other. This is another great murder mystery in a smashing series full of incredibly likeable characters, and this locked room type plot has plenty of action and twists and no shortage of good suspects to keep the reader thoroughly engrossed from start to finish.

Followers of the Rina Martin mysteries by award-winning author Jane Adams, will welcome the ninth addition to the series Murder at the Wedding . Rina is attending a wedding for one of her close friends, Bridie Duggan at Milbourne House located on an Island. While Bridie is an upstanding citizen, her previous husband had some dealings with organized crime, and some of those mobsters are invited to the wedding. When a dead body is found, Rina starts investigating (one of her favorite things is being an amateur sleuth since she is a retired actress and played one on her television show) and assists the main detective, Mac, who is the best man, in solving the murder. Unfortunately, the weather is horrid, and that causes problems with the investigation, as some of the guests are being murdered while there is no escape from the island.

Generally, a series is named after the protagonist, but in this particular novel, Rina Martin is a sub-character and while she is featured and helps with the investigation, Mac is definitely the star. It’s possible that the previous novels have built her as the main one, but those who haven’t read them, she really doesn’t seem to be the star. .

The storyline is different from many thrillers in that readers know who the murderer is early in the novel. The intrigue is for Mac, Rina, et al to figure it out. Adams is a good storyteller, and the novel keeps readers on the edge.

All told, this is an excellent thriller that fans of Adams will love. It has just enough twists and turns, and Adams captures the English charm of the setting. The dénouement isn’t a particular surprise, but puts things right for the ending.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

A criminal family turned good. A police officer as best man. But one of the guests is planning a murder....
Murder at the Wedding is the 9th book in the Rina Martin series. I have read and reviewed the previous book in the series, Murder at the Willows.
The book begins with a gangland killing and the escape of an undercover officer. The plot then jumps forward to the upcoming nuptuals of Bridie and Fitch, a chance for a new future on the right side of the law. But there are issue with a will and someone is prepared to murder in order to gain success and power for themselves.
There is plenty of build up to the murder which doesn't occur until after the wedding, a third of the way through the book. Even Rina is almost a secondary character in this opening third as she enjoys the wedding preparations. Mac, a police officer has a better idea that something dangerous is brewing as he has been asked by his boss to keep an eye on proceedings, leaving him the difficult task of juggling the personal and professional.
As with the previous book, I felt a little overwhelmed by the number of characters and their pre-established relationships. I definitely think that the whole series should be read in order to understand the development of character profiles and their relationships.
I liked the claustrophobic atmosphere of the remote wedding venue which increase the tension. There were multiple layers of plot and I enjoyed the different viewpoints of the wedding location and guests.
Murder at the Wedding is a enjoyable murder mystery but a little slow at times as it relies on prior knowledge of the characters.

Rina Martin is a retired actor and has a nose for crime. This time she has been invited to a wedding, and it's rather an unusual one. Many of the guests and even the bride and groom have at one time or another been on the wrong side of the law and the wedding itself is on a small island, accessible only by boat. The happy couple are determined to send a message out both to their guests and to the world beyond that they are now law abiding and won’t be coerced into anything that isn't the right side of the law. Two of the guests, brother and sister are at war with each other through their fathers will which as in life pitted them against each other. When a guest is found dead, the perpetrator has to be on the island. Can Rina and Mac find whodunnit and keep themselves safe at the same time?

This is a wonderful, easy, relaxing read despite the subject matter! It's a great plot and although there are lots of characters to begin with, things soon slot into place as to who is who. Although one of a series it happily stands alone ( I haven’t read all of the others) and Rina is a great lead. It's very well written and thought out and the reader is led as to who the perpetrator is through interspersed chapters from their point of view. There are several twists and turns keeping the plot alive right the way through. A thoroughly enjoyable read I highly recommend.

In another entertaining and enjoyable cosy mystery, Rina Martin and her clan of eclectic characters join DI McGregor at the wedding of close friend Bridie Duggan at an isolated island hotel. Some of her former husband’s contemporaries are also invited. Tensions and old family rivalries are causing unease.

The day after the wedding, a body is found. McGregor is soon back in work mode. But the foul weather is as much an enemy as the killer, trapping them all on the island. Help from the mainland is delayed by flooding, adding to the tension and unrest.

When more shots are fired and another guest’s life is threatened, everyone is on edge. While McGregor tries to keep everything under control, Rina makes her own inquiries, determined to help.

While this can be read as a standalone, you’ll get much more from the story if you’ve followed the series from the beginning. The characters and relationships have developed progressively over the series and add to the enjoyment and plausibility of events.

The closed setting and menace is palpable and the tension cranked up as the threat increases with each hour that passes. It’s all expertly handled and delivered with maximum impact to produce a thrilling climax and resolution.

If you haven’t read the series, I’d urge you to start at the beginning and enjoy this delightful, and consistently entertaining series.

Rina and her friends are on their way to the long awaited wedding of Bridie Duggan and Fitch. The venue is a huge mansion located on an island way out in the country. Mac has been asked to be the best man. Just before they leave town Mac gets called into the office of the top brass and is asked to keep an eye on things, with no other details given. The wedding turns out as beautifully as Bridie planned. However, the following morning, not only does the weather change to continuous downpouring rain, but three dead bodies of guests are discovered. Bridie's first husband was known to have been highly involved in crime syndicate. There is currently a battle for power within the crime boss's world and isolating the powerful players on a deserted island made the perfect opportunity to eliminate some of them.
The situation becomes very tense as Mac is forced to take charge, try to figure out what is going on, and keep everyone safe. Rina's little adopted family really comes through by using their individual talents to help out wherever they can. Great read!

I have read a few of the previous books in the series and enjoyed them, but this for me fell a bit short of the mark. It had all the hallmarks of a good locked room mystery when a whole crowd of crooks gather at a remote location for a wedding and the weather turns, leaving the guests and staff stranded the morning after the wedding has ended. With the discovery of the dead man, there isn't a shortage of suspects.

The story felt a bit slow though and even with further murders, the pace didn't seem to increase. The overall ending also felt a bit rushed and unsatisfactory and I just felt something was missing this time.

Thanks to Joffe Books for a copy of this and this is my honest review.

Very exciting throughout!

Bridie Duggan is getting married; the nuptials have been planned to the letter and the guests are heading to an exclusive hotel on an island only accessible by local ferry. Among their number are DI MacGregor known to all as Mac, and Rina Martin, retired actress known for her sleuthing skills which is handy as after the bridal couple have left on honeymoon, the first dead body turns up quickly followed by two more . . .

How have I missed this series? I really enjoyed this one, the ninth in series; a great cast of characters and so much happening. It hooked me from the very beginning and I was riveted until the very last word. Never quite sure where it was headed next, I was suspicious of everyone but admit to feeling just a little let down by the ending. Still, a good read and a series I would like to catch up on. 4.5*.

Rina and her friends are attending a wedding at a a luxury venue situated on a small island. Mac is best man, a policeman, this is not unusual except the bride and groom have connections to criminals; in fact the wedding guests are made up of a mix of those from criminal backgrounds and those not.
The wedding passes off without a hitch and the happy couple leave on their honeymoon. Some guests are staying at the hotel enjoying the luxury.
The peace is shattered the next morning with the discovery of a body, and as the weather deteriorates the body count rises.

I enjoyed the previous book that I read by this author, so I thought I'd try another one.

This was a Rina Martin mystery. I thought the writing in general was good, and had a cosy sort of feel, but I didn't really connect with any of the characters or like them, found myself indifferent to them all. I think for that reason, I didn't connect with the story as well as I'd have liked. But I probably would try another book featuring this protagonist.

This is book 9 in the Rina Martin series and it's a good cozy. I didn't realize this was a series till I was finished. I will be looking for more books featuring Rina and her friends. Rina is attending the wedding of an old friend whose former husband was well connected to the mob. Set in a remote palatial home accessible by boat, Rina must solve two murders before she's the next victim. A retired actress who played the part of a sleuth she has a trick or two up her sleeve. Great characters and a wonderful setting.

Rina and crew invited to Bridie's and Fitch's wedding at a private resort on an island.
Of course Rina discovers a body. Massive rain storm has cut them off from the mainland.
Rival criminal families have been invited as guests.
Shooters: Ruari Brewster and Regis Crick?
DS Pritchard seriously injured and Mia Brewster killed
Ruari Brewster shot, posed as a catering staff during the wedding;
Charlies Brewster killed...by Ruari?
5 bodies - 3 Brewster siblings and the Clarks;
Brewster empire absorbed by the Caprisi and Donovans.

I found it both intriguing and alarming when I learnt that the reader is going to experience a wedding like no other, when an ex criminal marries a police officer and there are guests from both sides. I could just picture the fabulous wedding venue: a large house on an island with hidden tunnels.
Packed with death and lots of drama and a will written with intent to cause conflict, this is a five star read with non stop action.

Great seeing the crazy group back together again!! I can understand some of the reviewers had problems identifying who was who but those of us that have read all of the series were delighted to seem them in action again. Some plot lines were sketchy—mention underground tunnels but not investigate them seemed odd. However, the storyline and dialogue brought it home. Love the series!! Please continue to involve the characters in more and more in future books

This book encapsulated suspense, intrigue, action, and the classic elements of murder and mystery, topped off with surprising twists. The plot was engaging and seamlessly woven. This was another good mystery with some complex twists and turns and the odd red herring However you do need to have read the other books to follow who's who I feel and although a good read it's not in my top 5 of this series. Cracking series!!!

I've just finished this series in about two weeks. With the exception of perhaps one which was not quite as good, all have been of a consistently high quality. The descriptive passages are good, as are the verbal ones. Although not essential, if you read from book 1 you grow with the characters. Thoroughly recommended.

Really great murder mysteries

These books are really great, the characters are slightly odd but wonderful. These books have everything, murders, mysteries , humour and a bit of romance. Not forgetting the mob too. I really enjoyed reading them and hope there will be more of these books.

It was supposed to be a wonderful wedding and up to the point of...

Dead bodies cause disruption, not helped by the atrocious weather, but Rina and friends remain calm and Mac investigates.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, mainly due to the characters, despite the villains always spoiling things...but then there wouldn't be the plot, tension and suspense.

Engaging and highly recommended.
