When Sarah Winston’s estranged brother Luke shows up on her doorstep, asking her not to tell anyone he’s in town - especially her ex, the chief of police - the timing is strange, to say the least. Hours earlier, Sarah’s latest garage sale was taped off as a crime scene following the discovery of a murdered Vietnam vet and his gravely injured wife - her clients, the Spencers. All Luke will tell Sarah is that he’s undercover, investigating a story. Before she can learn more, he vanishes as suddenly as he appeared. Rummaging through his things for a clue to his whereabouts, Sarah comes upon a list of veterans and realizes that to find her brother, she’ll have to figure out who killed Mr. Spencer - and all without telling her ex.
Sherry Harris is the Agatha Award nominated author of the Sarah Winston Garage Sale mystery series and the Chloe Jackson Sea Glass Saloon mysteries. Sherry is a past president of Sisters in Crime and a member of Mystery Writers of America. Sherry loves books, beaches, bars, and bargain hunting — not necessarily in that order. She is also a patent holding inventor.
Sarah Winston is helping the Spencers, a Vietnam vet and his wife, downsize with a garage sale. The sale is going well until the couple is found in a closed off area in the garage. The husband is dead but the wife is hanging on. Sarah is beside herself, how could this happen at one of her sales? Especially with so many people around. To her, that means plenty of suspects.
She is also surprised when her brother knocks on her door. She hasn’t seen him in years. He says he is working undercover on a story and begs her to keep his visit a secret. Even from her ex, who she is dating again and is around all the time. She discovers some of his notes, a list of veterans. Could his investigation have something to do with what happened at the garage sale? She is definitely going to find out.
I read this book all in one afternoon. The action started early and I just couldn’t put it down.
I was intrigued by the introduction of Sarah’s brother Luke. Had he crossed over to the dark side? Had his years in the service changed him. I went back and forth about him the entire story.
Sarah, now dating only C. J. but Seth is waiting in the wings really had her hands full. She is trying to solve the murder, trying to find out what her brother is up to, trying to help the Spencer’s son sell the things that were left over when the sale abruptly ended and trying to move her relationship with C.J. in the right direction. There were many nights she was exhausted and for good reason. All these characters are complex, real and entertaining. I am probably the only one but I am still on Team Seth.
The story has many layers and is very well plotted. Twist and turns and plenty of action kept the pages turning rapidly. The mystery centered on a topic I had never really given a lot of thought and I learned something. That always makes a story better.
I do enjoy Ms. Harris’ writing style. Her books are very easy to escape right into leaving the stressors of real life behind. A quick pace, plenty of suspects and a very entertaining mystery make this a good day to buy, A Good Day To Buy. 🙂
There is a cliffhanger at the end of this one. In a way, I am glad I was late to the party for this series because I don’t have to wait a year for the next book. I Know What You Bid Last Summer will be out February 27.
Bargain hunters beware--garage sales can be deadly. Just ask Sarah Winston, official organizer of treasures and trash. She can simplify your life by sorting through your possessions, and she can dissect every aspect of a murder until she tags a killer.
Book four in the Sarah Winston Garage Sale cozy mystery series contains an unpredictable cast of strong, interesting characters that I enjoy getting to know better in each story. Ms. Harris expertly weaves in interesting and unexpected plot twists with candor, humor, and humanitarianism. Follow Sarah and watch as the sales and the clues add up to a remarkable surprise ending! I enjoy this fascinating series and learn something new in every book.
I really like this cozy mystery series. Sarah Winston doesn’t go looking for trouble but she certainly finds a boatload of it. While she’s having a garage sale for The Spencers she goes back to find Mr. Spencer on the ground staring blankly with blood around him and Ms. Spencer curled up next to him. To make things more bizarre her estranged brother shows up at her door and asks her to not tell anyone he’s in town. When clues start to pile up to indicate her brother attacked the Spencers Sarah has no choice but to help investigate. I like that the townspeople have started to comment on her “heroism” or her cursed luck in always finding dead people. It brings a level of realism to the story that I enjoy. I also like that Sarah starts to take a couple lessons in self-defense in this book. How many times can a girl get attacked or kidnapped before she realizes she needs to know how to throw a proper punch?
Sarah is helping the Spencers downsize their possession before a planned move, but things take a tragic turn when Sarah finds them lying on the garage floor in the middle of the sale. Then, that afternoon, Sarah’s estranged brother Luke shows up asking for help is hiding out for a couple of days. Luke disappears just as the police being looking for him on connection with what happened at the Spencer’s. Can Sarah figure out what Luke is doing and clear his name?
Luke adds an interesting element to this addition to the series. The plot is fast paced and kept me so engaged I had a hard time putting the book down. I did have a couple of niggle with the ending, but they are very minor. I love the characters in this series, and it was fantastic to see all of them again. While the love triangle may be over, we did see both of the men in Sarah’s life in this book. Fans will delight in this book and it will hook new readers on the series.
Sherry Harris does it again in this latest addition to the Sarah Winston Garage Sale Mystery series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, in fact, it is the best I have read so far. If you have not visited Ellinton Massachusetts in this series, it is time you did.
Sarah Winston is divorced from ex-military, now Sheriff, C.J. They have begun dating again and it seems a remarriage may be in the future. While running her latest garage sale at the Spencers, she discovers Mr. Spencer, a veteran, dead in the garage and his wife unconcious on the floor beside him. When she returns home that day, she answers her door only to find her estranged brother Luke standing there. As CJ investigates the crime, Luke becomes a suspect in the murder when his fingerprints are found in the garage. Of course, this causes Sarah to begin her own investigation to exonerate her brother. As another body turns up, Sarah once again finds herself in danger. When she begins to have suspicions about a group of visitors to the town, CJ tries to get her to stop her questions and interference. Will she be able to find the true murderer? What is Luke really involved in? Will Sarah and CJ proceed to the next step in their relationship?
The plot is well paced, and the characters are well developed. It is easy to get a good sense of Sarah through her interactions with the other characters. She continues to be loyal and stand up for thsoe she cares about. She is honest and not afraid to turn in her brother if she finds evidence that he did kill Mr. Spencer. I did not have any idea who the murderer was and the twist at the end of the story was very good. At the end of the book there are some tips for yard sale buyers and sellers. I thoroughly enjoyed this cozy mystery. I recommend this book to cozy mystery lovers out there. This is a good series. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.
Really 4.5 stars, but I rounded up I'm going to be completely honest, I like to yard sale, but when I first saw this series I didn't think I'd like it. It just didn't sound like a broad enough pastime to base a series off of. However, I am glad to say that I was completely wrong. The Sarah Winston Garage Sale Mysteries are wonderful books that I always look forward to. Another well-written book in a great series, A Good Day to Buy was excellent.
I read for the characters, and the characters in this book were great. Sarah is the perfect MC. She has her breakdowns, but that makes her realistic. I also love Gennie, Seth, and Stella, though I must say, Gennie is probably my favorite character in the entire book. Luke, Sarah's brother, was a complex, interesting character I hope reappears later. Another character introduced, Charlie, was an absolute hoot! I hope the next book brings more scenes with Gennie and her, because they are great!
I mentioned that I thought the premise for this series would be limiting, but it's not. The way Ms. Harris sets up Sarah's business is creative, and there is so much more than just one or two simple yard sales happening. The mystery, also, was solid, though the murderer reveal was slightly anticlimactic.
Really the only negative in this book was CJ. To put it lightly, he's a pig. An absolute jerk who Sarah would be better off without. That's all I'm going to say about him.
Overall a well-written, outstanding book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I can't wait until another one comes out!
A Good Day To Buy is an excellent read. Sherry Harris has written a brilliant mystery. This is the first I have read in this series and it blew me away. I found I cared so much about each and every character, was so emotionally involved in the story and even cried when it was over. I have so much respect for Sherry and how she wrote this book, the great care and attention she put into each character and how she highlighted & evoked the need to show more appreciation for military families, their struggles during deployment and the much needed after care even decades later. Even though I am new to this series I can tell you that this series has so much heart you will want to read the entire series! This one is out April 25th and one to read for sure.
Even though this book is the fourth in a series, you really don't need to read the other books to keep up with what is going on in this book. The main character helps others have profitable garage sales. Unfortunately, Sarah Winston finds a body in the garage and she's off to solve the mystery that goes along with it. I do have to admit some of the parts of the book seem formulaic in Cozy mysteries, especially since there are so many out there in the genre. What made me raise my rating from a 3 star to a 4 star, was the fact the author used the book to bring out an issue that many of our Veterans are dealing with. It was cute, and a very quick read.
For the most part, I really enjoyed this cozy. The mystery storyline kept me entertained, and I liked that part of the book very much. What I don't care for in this series is the love triangle. I'm not a fan of them in general, but find this one particularly annoying. The main character looked like she was heading in one direction romantically in a couple of the books, and then she does a complete about face and is all in with the other one. Now, it looks like there could be a roadblock for that relationship. It just makes me feel like she doesn't care about either the way you should love a life partner.
In this book, Sarah's estranged brother, Luke, shows up. Sarah hasn't heard from him in years, but even so, when she finds that he may be in trouble, she agrees to keep quiet about his visit. When Luke disappears and becomes a suspect in a murder, Sarah is determined to prove his innocence.
The cozy mystery aspect of this book was great! It really had me thinking, and I certainly wouldn't have figured out much of what was really happening very early in the book. I hope the love triangle in this series will not continue to drag on and on. Also, this book ends with a cliffhanger!
A Good Day to Buy, the fourth book in Sherry Harris’s Sarah Winston Garage Sale mystery series, is another winner. With an intricate mystery, a surprising family reunion, and a nod to the issues confronting veterans, this book keeps your attention from start to finish.
You know you are in for a good read when the murder happens in the opening pages. Sarah Winston is in the process of conducting a garage sale when she discovers her client, Mr. Spencer, dead in his garage, with his injured wife lying next to him. A mysterious man is seen fleeing the scene. Hours later, Sarah’s estranged brother, Luke, arrives at her door. He tells her he is working undercover on an investigative journalism piece and asks her to keep his whereabouts secret. When Sarah begins to suspect there is a connection between her brother’s reappearance and the Spencers’ murder, she knows she must pull out all the stops to catch a murderer, clear her brother’s name, and keep him from becoming the next victim.
As with the other books in this series, there is so much to like. The mystery, as always, is top-notch, with clues and red herrings galore, and a twist at every turn. And with a wide variety of suspects, it can be quite challenging to sort them out. But what makes the book for me are the personal relationships. Luke is a great new character, one I hope will be sticking around. The mystery of his estrangement from the family is handled directly, despite the odd reunion. I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know him. Sarah’s relationships with C.J., her ex-husband, and Seth, her (somewhat rejected) suitor have a lot of depth. It is interesting to see how these relationships play out in future books.
Once again, Ms. Harris has written a gem of a novel. A Good Day to Buy is one of the strongest books in this terrific series.
This is the best book in the series! I absolutely loved reading this exciting story and I found myself glued to my chair until I finished it. Sarah Winston is such a fun character and she really shined in A Good Day to Buy by Sherry Harris.
Searching through used items is a pleasure for Sarah. The thrill of finding a treasure in someone else's junk is rush, wiping away the dust and cobwebs to uncover a prize is what she lives for.
When Sarah isn't on the hunt, she's organizing tag sales for her clients. Not expecting a tragedy at her normal tag sale, Sarah is overwhelmed with emotion when she stumbles upon a pair of victims in a garage.
A knock on her door brings Sarah into the past, and may possibly ruin her future. Will Sarah have the courage to do what's necessary for everyone involved?
This story was everything I love in a cozy mystery. The characters were colorful and fun, the mystery kept me guessing and there was a nice romantic twist as well.
Of course, Ms. Harris left us with a cliffhanger and I will be eagerly waiting for the next book. I proudly volunteered to read an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
A Good Day to Buy is the fourth book in the Sarah Winston Garage Sale Mystery series written by Sherry Harris. I enjoy this author’s writing style and Ms. Harris has provided enough character background that this book can be read as a standalone but it does end with a cliffhanger. The storyline is well plotted and the characters well developed and relatable. There were plenty of suspects and enough twists and turns to keep the reader engaged and no adult language, graphic violence, or sexually explicit situations. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading well-crafted cozy mysteries.
Sarah Winston lives in Ellington, Massachusetts and loves garage sales. She manages a virtual garage sale website, provides professional services to people having garage sales, and volunteers at the local military base’s thrift shop. She loves searching through used items and finding treasures. Sometimes she runs into a rare find at an unbelievable price but rather than taking advantage of the seller and purchasing it, she lets them know the item is valuable. Sarah and her ex-husband, Chief of Police ‘CJ’, are ‘dating’ and trying to work out their differences. During the sale for her clients, Velma and Verne Spencer, Sarah is devastated when she discovers the husband murdered and the wife unconscious in their garage. Sarah’s estranged brother, Luke, suddenly shows up at her door, needing a place to stay for a few days. Sarah isn’t sure what he does for a living but he’s asked her not to tell anyone he’s in town, especially their parents and CJ, until he completes his ‘investigative assignment’ and that he’ll explain everything then. While Luke is showering, Sarah snoops in his backpack but comes up with questions rather than answers. Sarah becomes worried when she can’t locate Luke and he isn’t answering her calls or texts. While searching for him, she stumbles upon the body of Ethan, a homeless veteran, who has Luke’s backpack. Evidence begins stacking up against him but even though they’ve grown apart, Sarah is certain Luke isn’t guilty and begins investigating on her own, beginning with names on a piece of paper she found in his backpack after the second murder.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
You know that I don't copy the blurb on books. I just tell it the way it is from my view. Ok, I liked this book, but I didn't like it. Why, you ask?? Because to me it was a bit more than a "cozy" mystery. Getting hit & kidnapped is not my idea of "cozy"~~ but that's just me. The twists & turns were interesting, and it turns out that I wasn't right about who the killer(s) are/were. I did read this in one day~~maybe because I just wanted to get to the end. I have advice for Sarah~~ Don't Do It!!
A Good Day to Buy By Sherry Harris ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I need to be honest, after reading the first book I wasn't sure I was going to like this series. (The split with CJ hurt my heart) BUT I love it soooo much. The more I read, the more I want to read. It is a bummer that I know the series is done, but thankfully I have a few more books to go. I do recommend reading this series in order.
Sarah's business is making sure other people have successful yard sales. Somehow though, she also tends to stumble across a murder. An enjoyable series. Now on to book #5.
A Good Day to Buy, book 4 in the Sarah Winston Garage Sale Mysteries by Sherry Harris, is another fantastic installment in the world of professional garage sale organization. While Sarah is running a sale for a local Vietnam veteran and his wife, they are found inside the garage in an cordoned off area; he's dead and she's seriously injured. When Sarah's brother Luke, who has been out of her life for 20 years, suddenly appears at her home after the murder occurs, she can't help but be suspicious. But is her brother involved? When all evidence points to Luke, Sarah makes it her mission to get to the bottom of things, all without telling CJ.
The slow rekindling of the relationship between Sarah and CJ makes me all warm and fuzzy. The ending of their union, as discussed in a previous book, wasn't all what it appeared to be, and it makes me happy that they are trying to find a way to rebuild. There are still issues to be resolved but they are both trying and I'm rooting for them. I was happy to see Sarah's brother re-enter her life even though the conditions aren't favorable. The author drew out a lot of emotions that are felt by the reader, not just with Luke but with other scenarios. The plot flows well and is fast paced. I was engaged throughout the novel, never hitting any slow spots.
I really enjoy the Garage Sale Mysteries by Sherry Harris. As a lover of garage sales, yard sales, flea markets, etc., a cozy setting of this nature makes me happy. Sarah is a great protagonist and has been in such a way that I feel like I know her personally. She has very realistic characteristics and the author really brings Sarah to life. The secondary characters are also realistically written.
As I said about the first 3 books in the series, A Good Day to Buy is a fantastic cozy mystery that is full of twists, turns, distractions, and red herrings. There are suspenseful, humorous, and heartbreaking moments that are sure to keep the reader engaged. The author sets up many of the characters as the potential suspect and expertly pulls the tablecloth out from underneath them without spilling the truth.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by the publisher.
Sarah Winston opens her door and stood there in shock. Her estranged brother was her visitor. The second happening in the day. When her clients were murdered during the garage sale, she was hosting that morning. The fourth book in the garage sale mysteries is as good and creative as the previous books. The twists and turns it takes will keep you guessing until the end. Beware the conclusion will startle you. I highly recommend this book and series.
Disclosure: I received a free copy from Kensington Books through NetGalley for an honest review. I would like to thank them for this opportunity to read and review the book. The opinions expressed are my own.
I love this series and was eager to read this fourth book. I wasn't disappointed! Sarah's estranged brother pops up in Sarah's life and is connected to a murder at one of her yard sales. There is plenty of action and mystery in this book, which kept me guessing right up to the end. I liked that the story went at a good pace and didn't reveal too much, too soon. Though locals refer to her as a hero, I like that she's far from perfect, in her relationships and life in general. I did cringe a couple times by some obvious missteps, but her mistakes helped move the plot along. There's a pretty major cliffhanger at the end, which leaves me itching for the next book even more than usual.
A Good Day to Buy by Sherry Harris is the 4th book in the Sarah Winston Mystery series. During a garage sale, Sarah Winston’s clients are attacked resulting in the death of a Vietnam veteran soldier with Sarah’s brother Luke becoming a suspect, and further veterans coming under attack. An interesting mystery where we learn about the difficulties facing returned soldiers. Lots of garage sale tips are included as we accompany Sarah on the sales trails and I love the self defense training. An enjoyable cozy mystery.
First I would like to thank Netgalley and Kensington Books for allowing me to read this advanced copy.
In this latest Garage Sale mystery a long lost brother shows up at Sarah's door. He is very secretive and says he is working on an undercover story. But with the murder's piling up she has a had time keep his secret from CJ, her ex husband. I love the little tidbits that are added into the story about restoring/rescuing old furniture. Also the cliffhanger at the end has me eager for the next book in this series. Solid story, likable characters, I can't wait to see how this series progresses.
I love this series! This time, the mystery is personal. Not only is the victim killed at a garage sale that Sarah is running, her long-lost brother is the prime suspect in the murder! I love how each new mystery gifts a glimpse into military life that civilians don't get to see.
I'm really loving this series. I listened to this on audio. Hillary Huber, voice actress, is fantastic. She brings the characters to life with voice tones and accents. Sherry Harris keeps the story moving and adds just the right amount of details. The twists and turns kept me guessing. I can't wait to read the next one!
This was my first time reading this series and I enjoyed it, although it left me wondering what happened before and what decision Sarah will make about the future. Time to read a few more Garage Sale Mysteries.
This was an easy read and entertaining cozy mystery. But why does CJ ignore her so much? I mean I know he’s important but damn. Though it’s not my favorite genre, it was a good escape, and I would read more in this series.
