These books always intrigue me.
Snapshots of historical and social events which occurred during a particular momentous decade.
This one chronicles the period between the stock market crash of 1929 to the beginning of World War II in 1939. Calamitous times indeed!

The beauty of this book is that it is a pictorial history with some 500 or so fascinating photos of the period matched with brief but enthralling articles depicting major news events, social mores, entertainment and famous personalities of the era.

Naturally the items included center primarily on American times but there is still plenty of international coverage as totalitarian regimes gained power in Europe and the subsequent threat of world conflict raised its ugly head.

My parents lived through these turbulent times; only sorry I didn't pump them for more information about their own journey through the Depression, natural disasters and world war.
What I did learn from them was they experienced colorful and traumatic times and were part of a special generation which held their heads up high and battled through this crucial time in history to make things better for those who came after them.

The author, a master at this type of pictorial history, brings all this to life in an entertaining and informative manner. And it is one of those books any reader will love to pluck out of the bookshelf for a quick study of a particular major event.

Review based on Bonanza (Citadel) hardcover edition, 1962. 288 large sized pages; 500+ photos.
