“We weren’t exactly new, not in a lot of ways. Vera had been a part of my life for years. A part of Allie’s too. We were just starting down a different path. And there was no looking back.”
When I picked up Sable Peak, I thought I was in for a sweet small-town romance—and it is that—but it also reached into my heart in ways I didn’t expect. Vera Gallagher felt like someone I could see myself in. She’s been quietly in love with Mateo Eden for years, loving him from the sidelines without pushing or demanding anything in return. And Mateo… well, somehow he never noticed her in that way—until something finally shifted.
ˋ°•*⁀➷ Vera:
➵ “It wasn’t gone, but it was lighter because Mateo was carrying part of it now.”
Vera is a character you root for from page one. She’s been through emotional storms that could have made her close off completely, yet she remains soft, hopeful, and quietly brave. What’s touching about Vera is her vulnerability—she’s not afraid to feel, but she’s terrified of being hurt again. Her love for Mateo existed long before he ever noticed it, which makes their eventual romance all the sweeter. Vera’s bond with Allie shows her natural nurturing side, and watching her become part of a family she’s always deserved feels like watching someone finally step into the sunlight after years in the shade.
Vera’s character stayed with me because I see so much of myself in her. She’s soft but strong, loving yet guarded, and she’s been through enough to know that letting someone in isn’t always easy. Still, she chooses to hope. That quiet resilience—the kind that doesn’t shout but keeps showing up every day—feels so personal to me.
I relate to the way she loves Mateo from a distance at first, not because she doesn’t care enough, but because she cares too much. She doesn’t push, she doesn’t demand—she just loves in a way that’s patient and steady, even when it hurts. And when Mateo finally sees her for who she truly is, it’s not just about romance. It’s about her finally being chosen, not because she changed, but because someone finally recognized the worth she’s always had.
Vera’s story isn’t just about falling in love with someone else—it’s about finding a place where you belong, where your heart feels safe. And that’s something I think so many of us are searching for.
ˋ°•*⁀➷ Mateo Eden:
➵ ”like the moon and the tide, the closer he got to her, the closer he wanted her.”
Mateo is the kind of man who reminds you that love isn’t always loud—it can be steady, patient, and quietly life-changing. At first, he feels like this calm, dependable presence, almost unaware of how deeply someone right beside him cares. But when he finally sees Vera, truly sees her, it’s like a switch flips, and there’s no going back.
What I love most about Mateo is how his devotion shows in the little things. He’s protective without being overbearing, tender without losing his strength. He doesn’t just make Vera feel loved—he makes her feel safe. That’s a rare kind of love, the kind that gives you room to breathe while still holding you close.
And then there’s Allie. The way he is with his daughter says everything about his heart. He’s patient, warm, and present, which makes it clear why Vera falls for him—not just as a man, but as a father. His love isn’t divided between them; it grows to fit them both.
Mateo’s journey isn’t about becoming someone new—it’s about realizing what’s been in front of him all along and stepping fully into it. Once he does, his commitment is unshakable. He’s proof that the right man doesn’t just love you when it’s easy—he loves you when it matters most.
ˋ°•*⁀➷ Allie:
Allie might be young, but she’s such a big part of book’s heart. She’s not just there to be the “cute kid in the background”—she’s the thread that quietly ties Mateo and Vera together. The way she naturally gravitates toward Vera says so much; kids can sense when someone’s heart is genuine, and Allie sees that in her long before Mateo fully does.
What I love most about Allie is how she brings lightness and innocence into the story. She softens the heavier moments and reminds everyone—characters and readers alike—that love doesn’t have to be complicated to be real. Through her, you see how Vera already belongs in their world, even before the romance officially begins.
Allie’s presence also deepens Mateo’s character. The way he parents her—patiently, protectively, and with so much quiet love—shows exactly why he’s worthy of Vera’s heart. And when the three of them are together, it’s not just a love story between a man and a woman—it’s the making of a family.
➵ “I couldn’t stop thinking about her. It felt like someone had slipped glass on my face. And that someone had given me permission to see. Now I wanted to learn everything there was to learn about Vera. I wanted to see it all.”
What truly elevates this book is not merely the romantic elements, but the profound transformation that Mateo undergoes upon finally recognizing Vera. There is a poignant moment in the narrative where his perception shifts dramatically; he evolves from viewing her as just a friend to cherishing her as the most significant person in his life. This change is beautifully illustrated through his actions—he listens intently to her, defends her against challenges, and creates a sense of safety that she hadn’t even realized she was longing for. It was incredibly rewarding to witness not just his journey into love, but also his conscious decision to safeguard her well-being and mend her heart, showcasing a depth of character that resonates deeply throughout the story.
Before: He treated her like a regular friend, without special attention.
After:
He starts treating her as a priority—like she’s the most important person to him.
He listens to her feelings and respects her needs.
He defends her when she needs protection.
He makes her feel safe and valued in ways she hadn’t experienced before.
1. From “She’s just part of my life” → to “She’s my person.”
“You are her family… and you’re mine. We are your family.”
At first, Vera is simply Mateo’s close friend and someone who helps with his daughter, Allie. The shift happens when he realizes that she isn’t just there—she belongs in his life in a deeper way.
2. From distant respect → to protective involvement
“I won’t let him keep hurting you. I will not.”
He starts stepping into situations where Vera might be hurt—emotionally or physically—and makes it clear he won’t let it happen again.
3. From letting her manage alone → to sharing burdens
“From now on, we go out here together. I don’t want you out here alone. Not anymore.”
Early on, Vera tends to face things by herself, but Mateo changes that by making it clear she doesn’t have to.
4. From obliviousness → to deep curiosity
“Now I wanted to learn everything there was to learn about Vera. I wanted to see it all.”
He admits to himself that he can’t stop thinking about her, and he wants to know everything—her dreams, her fears, her past.
5. From convenience → to commitment
“I love you, Vera. I won’t leave you. And I won’t let you go.”
Before, their closeness was partly circumstantial (small town, family ties). After the shift, he’s intentional—he chooses her.
Vera’s side of the story is just as moving. She’s been through so much, yet she’s still gentle, loyal, and quietly strong. Her love for Mateo’s daughter, Allie, was so natural and heartwarming—it gave the story an extra layer of family love, not just romantic love. In the beginning, her love was invisible to him. By the end, it’s something she can say, show, and live without fear. This is a full-circle moment for her—choosing openness over quiet longing. Vera loves Allie from the start, but she never assumes she has a right to claim a place in their family. When Mateo tells her, “You are her family. And you’re mine,” she lets herself believe it—and accepts that she belongs.
By the end, I wasn’t just reading about Vera and Mateo falling in love—I was watching a family come together. It’s a quiet, steady kind of love, built on trust and care, the kind that makes you believe in forever. Sable Peak isn’t just a romance—it’s a reminder that sometimes the best love stories are the ones that grow slowly, until one day you realize they’ve been there all along.
