The Third Eye

Rate this book
"Tell me, Jinty, have you ever heard of the Ballinford doom?"

The question sounds again in Jinty's mind as she waits to give evidence on the Earl of Ballinford's death, and vividly she recalls the events behind it. The sense she calls "the third eye" is what first makes her aware of some power within the Earl--a power that could have as much to do with death, as it has with life.

But, with tension in the story reaching its climax, Jinty discovers also that the Earl is intimately concerned in her own family's affairs. His actions touch the lives of her elder sisters as each in her own way reaches the moment of maturity. It is his decision finally to challenge the haunting force of the Ballinford doom that brings Jinty herself to the same moment--but can she manage to fill the role this has thrust on her?

Maureen Mollie Hunter McIlwraith was a Scottish author. She wrote under the name Mollie Hunter. Mollie Hunter is one of the most popular and influential twentieth-century Scottish writers of fiction for children and young adults. Her work, which includes fantasy, historical fiction, and realism, has been widely praised and has won many awards and honors, such as the Carnegie Medal, the Phoenix Award, a Boston Globe - Horn Book Honor Award, and the Scottish Arts Council Award.

There has also been great interest in Hunter's views about writing fiction, and she has published two collections of essays and speeches on the subject. Hunter's portrait hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and her papers and manuscripts are preserved in the Scottish National Library.

Her books have been as popular in the United States as in the United Kingdom, and most are still in print. Critic Peter Hollindale has gone so far as to assert that Hunter "is by general consent Scotland's most distinguished modern children's writer."

I don't really enjoy stories about generational trauma through which a young, sensitive girl must find her way, but this coming of age story of Scottish school girl Jinty, who has the "third eye" ability to see into the heart of things both real (and things a bit beyond), moved me very much.
