Violet is a witch and comes from a strong magic family, but her magic isn't all that strong, if at all existent. The alpha wolf shifter, Lincoln, wants to make some much-needed changes in their society to bring them into the modern times, but the Elders and another Alpha stand in his way as they don't want the change. As per the supernatural law, both Violet and Lincoln are also expected to find a mate before a certain age of 33, which is fast approaching for both of them, with no mate for either of them in sight. To solve this problem, both Violet and Lincoln agree to fake date to deceive the elders, and the supernatural law, whilst taking time to change the said law, but will their old feelings surface back as they used to date as teenagers, or will they be adults about their arrangement? What they didn't see coming was Violet's magic and their feelings for each other, and trouble brews, but what kind of trouble and how bad is the question.
Violet was an insufferable not like other girls yet a regular girl but also a special one yet has no magic character. She is supposed to be an adult, but she behaves so childishly throughout. And, she calls her magic sparky. Like she's 3, not 32.
I am sorry, but I have to say this because I am reading a lot of books lately where the bra cup size seems to be the most important thing about a character. Violet is a plus-sized woman, and the writer left no opportunity to tell us Violet's bra cup size - DD. Also, others' smaller cup sizes in comparison to Violet, such as C and whatever is smaller than C. Telling once or twice, I understand, but more than that is just annoying. Also, DD is not even that big a size.
Lincoln was no better, though, in my eyes. Yes, Lincoln is a good guy who wants to change the archaic supernatural society, so much so that he is even willing to step down as the Alpha. He is also sexy, sexy, sexy, sexy, sexy, and everyone calls him sexy, sexy, sexy, sexy, sexy. Sexy got on my nerves after the first 783 times. Also, he's too good a guy with no flaws. Their romance felt forced, and the way Violet treats Lincoln put me off. If the characters had been angsty teenagers, I may have liked them better. Also, the sex scenes were cringe, along with all the puns and swearing. Matebond, True mates, and princess were overkill. Cringe! Cringe! Cringe!
This was supposed to be an enemies-to-lovers book, but it was not. They dated when they were teenagers, Lincoln broke Violet's heart, but it is clear from the start that Lincoln still has the hots for Violet, and did all along. Also, Violet was the same but chose to ignore those feelings.
And, the reason given for Lincoln breaking Violet's heart is so dumb that I had to read it twice, just to make sure I had read it right. Also, why didn't Lincoln try to break the hex?
I jumped on the bandwagon of all the paranormal adult romance books as of late, like everyone else, and I have to say that I have been largely unimpressed. There was no plot. The writing was sometimes cheesy, sometimes cringe. The characters were unbearable and one-dimensional. Things were told, not shown. The world-building sucked. I didn't understand the supernatural world in this. How does the magic work? How does the supernatural society co-exist with the normal world when the paparazzi are following the supernaturals? I have so many other questions, too, but whatever. I didn't hate it for it to be a 1-star read. It did have maybe one or two moments that I liked, but that's about it. I won't be reading the next in the series.
