This is the second book of the Big Island Series, a women's fiction saga filled with heart and hope.
As a Hilo girl, I have absolutely loved this story and enjoyed revisiting memories through the story. It is rich with local flavor and landmarks and events we took part in growing up. Looking forward to more rich tales. Mahalo
5 stars for Big Island Neighbors. Beautifully written story of the Islands and the strong women who make it all work. The descriptions make you want to close your eyes and hear the waves, smell the flowers and feel the sun on your face.
Shayla Cherry has done it again! Big Island Neighbors is a wonderful continuation of the Big Island Series, and I loved every page.
Tara's story is the heart of this book, and it's absolutely compelling. When her husband abandons his responsibilities and extends his mainland trip indefinitely, Tara is left to care for their three children, manage an overflowing hobby farm, and watch their savings disappear. What I loved most was seeing Tara dig deep and discover her own strength and creativity. Watching her transform her passion into a sustainable living for her family was incredibly inspiring and satisfying. Cherry captures the fear, determination, and ultimate triumph of a woman reinventing her life on her own terms.
Meanwhile, Emma and Lani's ongoing stories continue to resonate. Emma's search for fresh purpose as she moves through her grief feels authentic and hopeful, while Lani's navigation of new love—complicated by her vindictive ex's attempts to destroy what she's built.
What makes this series so special is the way these three neighbors support each other through life's challenges. Their friendship is the foundation that allows each woman to become who she's meant to be. Cherry perfectly captures the way community and connection can sustain us through the hardest times.
I read book 1 back in January of this year, and I’ll admit that I don’t remember anything from it. After reading my review and this second book, I’d say I feel the same. The theme of community is profound and I adored the women that stood together to help each other. It was quick, but enjoyable and just a good light-hearted read.
Mahalo for the series of books on the big island. I live here and the stories of the Hawaiian aloha spirit is so prevalent. I am reading one after another and can’t put them down. Donna Vincent
An engaging story of living in Hawaii, where friends and family matter most. The women characters are all strong and work hard to survive and help their children thrive.
