Review of “Flame Stone – Age of Scatter Morals Volume I”
This story of good versus evil is written in the style of “A Hero’s Journey”. It begins with two well-educated, teenage brothers seeking adventure. As the author unfolds their journey, the boys discover the Flame Stone. While searching for its rightful owner, they inadvertently learn that their peaceful land will soon become a battlefield. One realm is planning to attack an old rival even though a peace had been settled many years ago. With the guidance of their guardian, known only as “The Old Man”, they attempt to defuse the aggression peacefully. The author slowly transports the reader into the setting of a meeting that would allow honest, selfless leaders to resolve the crisis. He cleverly builds the suspense and mystery to a wild and fast moving meeting climax. Ultimately, the brothers and their friends must rally their neighbors to protect their homeland. As implausible as it sounds, the author explains how they acquire weapons, organize and train a small fighting force in a way that becomes believable. In preparation for battle the reader is brought into the story by the dialogue of the characters, much of which concerns facing the possibility of death. These conversations become more intense in the hours before the battle and are extremely profound after the battle. In fact, there are numerous profound statements found throughout the story concerning courage, selflessness and peace versus greed and war.

Here are some reflections on the writing skill of the author. From the very first pages the reader cannot disregard how the brothers and other characters always speak to each other with kindness and respect. There is no profanity in the book. His description of every setting throughout the story allows the reader to feel as though they are actually with the characters. He includes small details like the season of the year, the time of day and the effects of the weather on the scene. You will also experience all the sights, sounds and smells of nature.

Flame Stone is intended for teens and adults. However, it may also appeal to middle and high school language teachers with a number of literary elements to explore. Because there are many topics for enlightened discussions, book club members can have engaging conversations and speculate what will happen in Volume II.

The biggest surprise of this book is in regard to the author. I had the pleasure of hearing this young man speak at one of his first book talks in December 2023. As stated in his bio, he is just 18 years of age and was 14 when he first began writing this book. That was during the COVID lock-down. He was well-spoken and offered interesting insights to the story. Per Fundak, his purpose in sharing this story was to motivate young people to avoid the perils of evil and become leaders with high morals. It is my opinion that this book represents the true and inspiring character of this young man, and I look forward to reading volume two when it is released.
