An ancient religion that has been around for thousands of years

Ingrid Clarke invites us to explore an ancient religion that has been around for thousands of years in The 5 Pillars of Wicca. In this book she discusses the differences in the old religion and the neo-pagan religion now called Wicca. Clarke emphasizes the freedom to choose your own rites.

The first pillar the writer gives a historical account on how Wicca was created citing Gerald Gardner, and Aleister Crowley.

In the second pillar, Ingrid discusses the historical context of the Wicca deities, and how nature’s elements are a part of our connection to the world today. The writer defines Wicca’s ethical code, “an harm none, do what ye will”. She explains what the eight sabbats are and why they are important to wiccans.

In pillar three she discusses the freedom to choose your own path, your choice of how you practice your wicca. With pillar four she dives into the use of “magick”, and its history, how plants, incense, crystals and stones are used. Pillar five offers insights to the wiccan rituals and ideas on how to set up an alter, and what wiccan tools are traditionally used.

I found this book to be very educational and easy to read. If you like Starhawk’s books, then you will also enjoy this book. A plus is the glossary at the end. What the author achieves with this book is in the conciseness of explaining what wicca is and wicca’s history. She provides guidance in wicca rituals explaining that there are no set-in stone rules. The information provided is for guidance only.

As someone decently versed on the subject, I found this to be an excellent guide, introducing the reader to the history and origin of Wicca, its influence by European religions and the spirituality based on respect for all life, honoring the natural world and finding balance and harmony, connecting self to the world. For those unfamiliar, I think they would find it interesting to see they’ve already incorporated practices of The Pillars into their daily routines, ie. Centering, Grounding, and Shielding, Prayer, and basic knowledge of the Elements - All of which I’m noticing more and more natural in common conversation. I’m glad I happened across this book as I feel it will do the Wiccan community proud!

I really enjoyed learning some of the history behind wicca and pagan religions in general! While I don’t currently see myself getting serious about wicca in the future, there are elements of this book that I could see myself incorporating. Particularly the information on crystals are quite helpful, there’s just so much information out there and oftentimes it contradicts each other. It’ll be nice to have one point of reference to look at. I also think that if you have any interest in writing a novel featuring witches, this would be an awesome book for reference and inspiration. If I am being totally honest, I want someone else to be a witch so I can go to them and benefit.

Taught me a lot about Wicca

This is a great book that explains Wicca in detail. I never knew that the premise of Wicca is basically interconnectedness. Through a good foundation, beliefs, practice, magick, and rituals, we can better understand how to interact with the world. It’s all about finding a connection with the earth, ourselves, and each other. I’ve always been very curious about Wiccan rituals and I think Ingrid Clarke did a great job explaining all the different types of rituals. She even explains how to prepare for them. A lot of my misconceptions were put to rest by reading this book. Definitely check it out if you are curious.

enlightening

A very interesting description of the religion of Wicca, one of the oldest religions of connection to your higher self. Like the other religions, this is connection based and helps you build that within yourself. It can bring harmony to a life that’s out of balance.

I already understood Wicca, along with its 5 pillars and many techniques. But if you are not familiar with this practice, without a doubt, this is the book for you to get informed and deepen your comprehension of this mysterious practice. You will discover it’s not only a practice but a lifestyle. Reading the text increases the realization that Wicca falls into the category of religion; which is similar in make-up to how Christianity (with which most folks are familiar) is also a religion: practitioners of both religions create meaning and order inside their belief systems – including their fundamental beliefs and deities, ethical views, and ritual practice. The more I read Ingrid Clark’s book, the greater my understanding of the parallel of these two religions became apparent. Very interesting! The major difference in Wicca is that no holy text exists to follow. The book is a fascinating well-written book. I stayed engaged and enthralled throughout the text.
