Peace has settled. But will it last?

With old allies and enemies clamoring to meet and negotiate with the new "Bright Lord of Gelderham", the world of Etherion seems destined to return to a new age of stability at last. Closer to home, now that Kaya has joined the family, the dynamic in the Stillwater household has changed forever.

Children grow older, and the community grows closer. Gelderham always prospers, but uncertainties linger in spite of all this happiness. Several mysteries still loom over the heads of Gray and his family, in particular. What secrets does the Dreadwood hold? How does one engineer peace between two bitter sides of a freshly ended conflict? What are the limits of Greta's Chaos Magic? How did Percy come to found this unique settlement? And is Papa Fish secretly a god?

Well, probably not that last one.

Enjoy the end to the first leg of this slice of life fantasy family saga about love, fatherhood, friendship, and doing what we have to for the people we love.

I was thoroughly hooked and sped through this book, but it's my least favorite of the series so far. Not because it’s a bad book, but I enjoyed it less than Part 1 & 2 for a few different reasons.

My first major complaint is about Time Skips — I understand time skips are necessary for long series and there were two in this book. We started off with a small time skip of a couple years from where we had left off at the end of Book 2, but then later there was an even bigger time skip. I don't want to give any spoilers away, but this 2nd time skip felt too large for me and skipped too much. We got a brief half-hearted summary of some of the events that happened and a note that describing those events in more detail would require skipping around in time—but I would have much rather preferred that. We lost a lot of the joyful part of slice-of-life stories, seeing big milestones and events, important birthdays, reunions, births, etc etc. It left me decidedly feeling a bit robbed overall and annoyed as the time skip meant we missed things that I had been looking forward to since previous books.

The 2nd complaint is that this book was decidedly less cozy, we had heavier events and topics and that combined with the deduction of everyday joy made it feel all the more grim at times. Events towards the end of the book especially made me want to scream at the System Saints. The last chapter/epilogue helped those feelings a bit, but I still finished the book in a sour mood which may be making this review a little more pouty than strictly necessary. There was a lot of good in the book but the feelings I experienced in the final 5-6 chapters left a strong impression. Essentially I'm just really grumpy as the author made a plot choice that I feel was not needed — because it made me sad — and goes against what book 1 promised: a cozy slice-of-life litRPG with lower than average stakes. While the ending left us on a hopeful note, I’m just a tad disappointed that I didn’t get the same joy and laughs I had come to expect from this series.

Lastly and most trivial in my mind, is that this book seemed to have had the most errors — think forgetting to mention a character was there, switching of pronouns, sentences being written oddly or not quite matching previous events/lore, just things that happen when you write such a long book. None were major but I did notice and it brought me out of the story a few times, although this is likely enhanced that I'm reading each book back-to-back instead of having to wait for the next release so the details are fresh in my mind.

Dark Lord of the Farmstead 3

Gray has retired from the Dark Lord business and started his new life with his wife and two daughters. His Dark Council has found him though and is now sending representatives for advice and rulings. If things go well, there may well be a peace to negotiate between the Wrath Wastes and the elven kingdom. More stressful however, his daughter has discovered boys!

This was a great cozy litrpg! There are little adventurers to keep everything moving along, but it was just such a relaxing read. I did not expect to get parental advice from a necromancer, but here we are. I’ve already picked up book 4 and I’m ready to start it up! Jonathan Waters and Jessica Threet do a fantastic job as narrators.

I can see how this is the end of the first series.

But man, dots it set up the next story arc wonderfully. And several books could go on concurrently with coherent focus. This is just filled with potential.

Entertaining Read

Gray totally loves his wife and daughters. He is willing to move mountains to protect and spoil his family. Their daughters are unique and danger comes to them. I like the action, humor, and romance. I look forward to the next book.
