The Heart Wants

Rate this book
When Reagan rescues Sydney from disaster in an Italian cafe, they become instant best friends and spend an idyllic fall sightseeing until Sydney’s semester abroad comes to an end and she returns to the States. Reagan, a young Army lieutenant, has fought her attraction for months, bound by Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and must stay behind and complete her assignment. But their final night together—complete with an illicit kiss—lives on in their minds.

Over the next fifteen years, Reagan and Sydney ricochet in and out of each other’s lives, with each parting more excruciating and leaving deeper scars than the last. When DADT is repealed and they both end up in Washington DC , it’s a chance for Reagan to finally win the heart of the woman she’s always loved, if only the Army didn’t threaten to send them to opposite sides of the world. Again.

An epic love story that traverses the complexities of duty, loyalty, and sacrifice across the decades, Sydney and Reagan know what their hearts want, but love keeps slipping through their fingers.

Krystina Rivers has been a lover of romance novels since she was probably too young to read them and developed an affinity for lesbian romance novels after she found her first lesbian romance on a shelf in a used bookstore in 2001. Despite a lifelong desire to write romances, she never had the time to write her own until the COVID-19 pandemic struck, and she no longer had to commute to the office or travel regularly for work.
Krystina grew up in Florida but, after spending six years in the military, now calls Chicago home. She works in commercial real estate and lives with her wife and their two dogs and three cats. When not working or writing, Krystina can be found reading with a glass of wine in hand, doing yoga (occasionally with a glass of wine in hand), snuggling with her fur-babies, or trying to convince herself that it is not too cold to go for a jog outside.

This book has been calling to me since it came out. It’s funny because I don’t particularly like second chance romances but I love stories that span over decades of characters’ lives. The author tells us immediately what’s going to happen, a story that is going to relish in multiple chance reunions and then break your heart each time.

Two Americans in their twenties, Reagan and Sydney, meet in Italy. There’s hot chemistry between them but Reagan is career military and under the strict DADT restrictions. There is no way she can act on her feelings other than just spending some sweet moments together with Sydney. Then when the semester abroad is over, Sydney heads home to continue her dreams of a successful career in corporate law while Reagan resumes her path upward in the Army. As years go on, the couple continue to try again and again unable to resist the depth of their feelings.

If this book was a movie, I would be yelling and throwing things at the screen, especially at Sydney. That’s the pull of the story. Both characters are so likable and it’s nobody’s fault. But I was so hooked, waiting for all these shoes to drop, reading and hoping for them, time and time again. Just a great job in writing such a big story with so many painfully authentic scenes but also a story brimming with the passion of soulmates. If you like big slices of angst and heat in your stories, this book is it. Absolutely recommend.

4.5⭐️. This book is about Reagan who has dreamed of being an Army General since childhood and has worked her butt off to achieve her goal. While in Rome on assignment as a 23 year old, she meets Sidney who is a college student spending a semester abroad.
They have an instant attraction that seems very natural and they were both honest with each other about their feelings and goals. Reagan is serving while under the DADT rules and feels that she must uphold her officer's pledge to not break her vows. I loved her integrity and strength.

Sidney has grown up with a single parent mom who has struggled financially her whole life ever since her husband died. So Sidney is determined to become a corporate lawyer and achieve financial independence.

There was a lot of angst throughout this book, but it seemed appropriate for the characters beliefs and life goals. I really enjoyed their time in California while they met up again and were in grad school.

I did get a little bit frustrated with Sydney and her unwillingness to compromise. And I would have liked more of Reagan's childhood and parents. The action scene at the end was good, and I would have liked more action in the plot throughout the book.

It's been quite a tangled tale. We follow these two women from their late teens to their mid-thirties, as they keep crossing paths. Their interactions are often abrupt and end on a sour note, largely because of their opposing career paths. Reagan's military career clashes with Sydney's ambition to be a successful, independent lawyer. Throughout the story, Sydney's mother's disdain for the military significantly influences her daughter's views.

The premise of them constantly meeting and leaving each other prevents us from truly understanding how their lives have unfolded. We see snapshots of their lives, and while we witness their professional achievements, the reasons behind their on-and-off relationship remain unclear. Reagan, in particular, seems to have no personal life, while Sydney does have a partner at some point.

It didn't do it for me.

The Heart Wants delivers an emotional rollercoaster spanning decades, following Reagan, a dedicated military officer, and Sydney, an ambitious lawyer. Their chemistry is undeniable from their first meeting in Italy, but life, careers, and DADT keep pulling them apart. Every time they reconnect, I completely felt their love and the heartbreak of their circumstances.

The story offers glimpses into their evolving lives but leaves some gaps in fully understanding how they navigate their individual paths. Reagan’s military rigidity contrasts with Sydney’s complicated personal life, adding authenticity to their challenges.

This bittersweet romance is filled with angst, passion, and realistic moments, capturing the struggle of love against all odds. With a satisfying epilogue, The Heart Wants provides both closure and hope. Fans of second-chance romances with a dose of longing and complexity will find this book a rewarding read.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

Reagan meets Sydney who is studying abroad in Italy. Reagan is a top graduate of West Point and planning to have a military career. They spend a couple wonderful months sightseeing together before Sydney returns to college and her goal of law school. They run into each other a few times over the next fifteen years. Each time they know they are attracted and have feelings but can’t reconcile how their lives and careers can mesh together.

I enjoyed both characters. Reagan seems a little more rigid but it is consistent with her character being in the military. I didn’t love every decision. But it makes for an interesting and realistic feeling story. The plot includes time from before and after DADT which initially kept the two apart. I enjoyed the spice and really appreciate the epilogue, letting me see some of their HEA. This is a stand alone novel, but there is a wedding for the main characters of 'Something Between Us’ (April 2022) which was the author’s debut novel. I enjoyed that book but I think this is my favorite by the author so far. (4.5 Stars)

Thank you to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this interesting book

it was the time of DADT.... dont ask dont tell.... so no person in the armed forces could be of the LGTB community or if they were they would have to be very closet.. if caught they would be court martialled

reagan had dreams and it involved a career in the armed forces so meeting sydney in italy could have waylaid those plans

sydney also had dreams of beinga lawyer for a successful firm and to be a self sufficient as she could be without relying on anyone else...but she also didnt bank on meeting reagan in italy

wow this book opens up what it was like back in the nineties and it wasnt easy for the LGTB community but as the title of this books says the heart wants what the heart wants and time heals all... this book is based over multiple years and chance encounters

this book grabs you in ways that you hope that the two main characters can work out how to be together ...what a story...

This was the first book I read by this author, and I’m happy to say that I really enjoyed it! The characters were well-developed, and the romance was delightful. Best of all, it included all the elements I love in a romance—drama and angst. The story spanned a period of 15 years and concluded with a sweet, happily-ever-after epilogue. My only critique is that I found the book a bit too short; I wished I could swoon for longer!

Finding the love of your life and realizing life has its way of keeping you apart. Agonizing and heartbreaking but also a testament to how strong love can be.

I received an advance copy from Netgalley for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

All Reagan Jennings ever wanted was a solid army career with a promotion to General at the end. It’s has been what she focused on since she was a little girl. When deployed to Naples, Italy, she runs into an American woman who’s struggling to order coffee. Gentlewoman as Reagan is, she gets up to help her. They end up spending the day together seeing the sites of beautiful Naples, but Reagan soon realizes Sydney is the most beautiful sight of them all. During Sydney’s stay in Italy they spent all their free time together and Sydney becomes the closest friend Reagan has ever had. She’s probably more, but Reagan can’t act on any of her feelings with the military criminalizing being gay under the horrific Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell law. She cannot endanger her whole career like that. Cut to a few years later. While being selected for additional training, Reagan is stationed in Monterrey, California. She is out and proud now that DADT is revoked. Of course she has to run into Sydney again. And of course her feelings have not dwindled in the least. But they can’t make it work, with Sydney having her own hesitations and life goals.

Sydney Adams has a ten year plan, she is going to law school to be the best corporate lawyer she can be and finally be financially secure so she can support her mom and little brother. Her dad died while on deployment for the Navy and after her grieving mother found out how big of a douchebag her husband really was. His gambling problem left them bankrupt and his cheating ways broke her mom’s heart. The navy did screw them over too because all financial support was retracted when Sydney’s father’s true nature was revealed. To say she hates the army might be an understatement, she knows not every person in the army is as terrible as her dad, but still, the institution sucks. Her prejudices are challenged when Sydney meets the most authentic, honorable and gorgeous woman while studying in Italy. Reagan steals her heart, but Sydney can’t seem to work out how they could continue being together. Not just with Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, but with Reagan being deployed anywhere around the world every two years while she herself wants one place to call home and have a career. How come her heart just magnetically connects with Reagan every time they meet again over the years. Still, it can’t work, right?

Oh my, how this story broke my heart! Of course there is a HEA, it wouldn’t be a sapphic romance otherwise, but the journey towards that is full of highs and definite lows. It is a beautiful hurt though. Krystina Rivers does an excellent job in creating a world where you hate the decisions Sydney and Reagan make, but can understand them somehow.

The story spans over more than a decade. That timeline assures that you feel in your bones the love these two women share for one another. I have never had anything today with military life personally, but Waters paints a very detailed picture. Not about the work itself, but about the effects working for the army has on the personal lives of its personnel. Especially having to live in a very tight closet as a gay employee under DADT. My heart broke for Reagan and simultaneously for Sydney as she knew what feelings Reagan was repressing but is not able to do anything about it.

As Reagan and Sydney meet again over the years their bond grows so strong that eventually Reagan has to put a stop to it if this is all they can have forever. That scene had me grabbing for the tissues. It is so heart wrenchingly painful but necessary if they want to even have a crumble of their hearts left, once they say goodbye forever.

The Heart Wants will not spare your emotions, but please let it ruin you for a while. Love wins, I promise!

Reagan always wanted a career in the army which would lead to her being General at the end. Sydney plans to be a corporate lawyer so she can be financially secure so she can support her mom and little brother after learning of father misdeeds. Raegan and Sydney meet when Reagan helps Sydney in Italian cafe while being deployed they spend the whole day together and instant becomes friends but feelings are form but with
Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell law still in effect Raegan doesn’t want to act on them because it’s could ruin her career. As Raegan and Sydney grow closer over the years even when Sydney wonders how they can work with Reagan leaving ever two years wonder will they be able to have a life now that DADT is revoked that’s the question they have now. It’s was a great read about how you can’t help what your heart wants.

I liked this novel. It wasn’t my favorite, but it was thoroughly enjoyable, well-written, well-structured, detailed, full of feelings, and most importantly a satisfying read. I can see a broad appeal with this novel, and I think that a lot of people will likely enjoy it more than I did. The author is clearly talented and knows how to pen a good story.

I think a big issue for me is that this novel focuses a lot on the military; I’m not saying that I specifically dislike the military, but I will say that I don’t really connect with it. Its similar to when I read a novel with a good-guy-billionaire-CEO and I am supposed to sympathize with their struggles; not impossible but the author is fighting an uphill battle. The reason I’m writing this is to identify my own bias, so if you don’t share it then you can adjust what I am saying appropriately (although I tried to be objective, and still gave it 4 stars!).

This is a rare (but it happens) case where I have some very general and vague praise for the novel, and a lot of very specific complaints, yet overall ill say it was good.

My Rating: "B"
GoodReads: 4-Stars

I liked:
-Long timeline. I like it when a romance has a long timeline and there is sufficient time for them to develop feelings for each other. It makes the emotions more believable and impactful. They didn’t interact for a lot of the timeline, but it still worked.
-The author did a great job displaying WHY they have feelings for each other. An example was how Sydney appreciated how much Regan paid attention to her and what she said and remembered things about her and her life (in contrast to the girlfriend). Also, how much effort Reagan put into the time they spent together and trying to make it as special as it could be. This is much more satisfying than “some unexplainable connection”.
-So much detail! The characters had detailed backstories and lots of history and were very fleshed out and fully actualized characters.

Nitpicks (spoilers below!):
-This is ultimately the story of two women who both have ambitions, which are incompatible, and neither will compromise. This worked well at the start, as both goals seemed reasonable, and it was a mutual decision. Very quickly however this was reframed (explicitly) as Sydney being unwilling to compromise to Reagan’s life, while there was no expectation for Reagan to compromise. This bothered me a lot because it was just taken as gospel that the military career could NOT be touched in any way, whereas Sydney should make all of the concessions, or even give up her career all together. Multiple times the very concept of Reagan compromising in ANY way was immediately brushed off by all characters as not even worth considering. By the end it was clearly being portrayed that Sydney was entirely at fault for their relationship failure, acting silly, and borderline selfish. Reagan “couldn’t possibly” compromise on her career ambitions (or even slow them down), despite already being high-ranking. She was already financially secure at the start of the novel too! It was incredibly one-sided, and….continued below….
-Their motivations were, in my opinion, not remotely equal. Sydney came from a situation of poverty and instability and had trauma surrounding those experiences. She wanted to find stability, be self sufficient, and also take care of the rest of her family (including a sick parent!). Reagan on the other hand wanted to be the most accomplished member of her all-around successful family, and that was her entire motivation. It was essentially an ego trip. I am not saying that her ambitions were not valid, but I am saying that they were not equivalent to Sydney. Reagan wanted to make General essentially for the bragging rights; not because that position would allow her to accomplish some goal, or help people, or because it was needed to get a specific position she wanted. The fact that their motivations were so unequal (in my opinion) and the novel valued them backwards really bothered me. Every time they parted ways it was just understood that Reagan couldn’t do anything different and Sydney had all of the pressure to make concessions. Reagan could have easily gotten a position where she wasn’t travelling the world and they could have been together, she would have still been able to serve in the military, she just wouldn’t have gotten that medal she wanted.
-That’s quite the rant! Oops. This aspect of the novel honestly made me want to rate it 2-stars, but I think that’s unfair. I simply had a hard time going along with the storyline/conflict given that the entire time I didn’t truly value anything Reagan was trying to accomplish, which made it hard to empathise with her position. It was frustrating.
-Sidney: her anti-military biases were honestly weak. They eventually fell apart following one very obvious and simple conversation. She never ONCE thought about the possibility of working remotely, even after doing it for years during Covid? Unrealistic. The desire to be “financially stable” made perfect sense, however her definition seemed to actually mean “be in the top position of a major company and be very rich”, and not being willing to compromise on that was……eh.
-It was clear as day why Sydney liked Reagan, but it was less clear in the other direction. I can point to a lot of specifics for the former, but not much beyond attraction for the latter.
-In some ways, I didn’t really see their connection. They had great chemistry, but every time they parted ways they drifted apart relatively quickly. Add in how they never even tried to make it work after they parted ways and it seems like they worked out DESPITE their own efforts.

Great prologue! History given, questions raised, and a writing style I like. The book isn’t really flash backs but from the synopsis we know the first two times don’t work out. Therefor there is a bit of impatience with me to get to the bit where it will work out, but that is daft on my part because the journey is what this is about. I am a little bit irritated by one’s disregard for the restrictions the army main is under, under don’t ask don’t tell. About 18% in, the writer, through the character explains the ramifications of being gay in the military, at least to someone with honour.
Of course, time and DADT, moves on. By the point they do, I was a bit over ready for them to also move on. Equally I know (from the synopsis) this is a three act play and they are only on act 2. I’m not feeling much tension. Presumably because I know that this act is not the final timeline.
Interestingly, to me, rather than being carried along by the intimate scenes I just wanted what would happen plot wise next. That I think means a minus in the setting of that scene. I wasn’t swept along by it. I guess I could say the foreplay didn’t work for me.
However, at the 65% mark, when we move to present day, having just left the agonising previous section where our mains catch up, but don’t cop on, and boy am I sitting up like a meerkat for this section.
Well, this went to the wire! Often in books I’m thinking there is still lots left, what is the author going to fill it with we already have the happy ever after. With this, I was doubting there would be enough time for it all to work out…..There was. Also an epilogue! 3.5

Wow, this book will definitely be one of my 2024 reading highlights! It was an awesome read with lovely characters, a good storyline and plot and a great writing style.

I instantly liked both Sydney and Reagan and enjoyed reading about them. Their chemistry has been there from the very beginning and lasted throughout the whole book. I also really liked the timeline jumps, it was super interesting to see how the characters changed and grew overtime and we were able to meet them during different points in their lives. The character development was amazing and it kept you rooting for them. There was a lot of back and forth between them, but I really liked it even though it made me want to rip my hair out from time to time.

I’m not gonna lie, I honestly expected a different ending, but I’m glad that I was wrong! The ending was great even though I wasn’t ready for the book to end.

I would have liked to know what happened to Sydney’s best friend and her other roommate. Another thing I would have loved to read is a longer epiloge.

A big thank you to NetGalley, the author and Bold Stroke Books for the advanced digital reader's copy in exchange for an honest review!

Such a interested read. As i’m not American, I never really had contact with the ways the USA military works and its history, so I was shocked - to say at least - which such cruel ruling as the DTDA was very much real and endured for so long and not that long ago. As we readers are in the present, seeing all the steps the LGBTQ+ community have done within this century is both comforting and bittersweet sad.

As we accompanied Reagan and Sidney for such a long time, it was lovely to see a early 2010’s world, without any of the technologies that could made their lifes easy, and a sad irony to see the way they talked about the COVID-19 weeks before the whole world chanced. But, nonetheless, it was a good journey on their sides.

I say this as I was so interested in the main characters, I would have loved to see the “in between”encounters they had during the fifteen years the book take place. See how they got into and delt with new relationships, how was Sidney getting the career she wanted, how Reagan felt when the DTDA was revoked… so many little side stories and developments I would not mind reading about - instead of the just tell aspect we end up getting. Like, what happened to Aliyah? She was such a nice caracter and friend to Sidney. Was kinda heartbroken that she just desapeares in the story, really wanted to know if she was a thing with Jesse and how her friendship with the protagonists unfolds.

The only thing that quite didn’t match my personal liking was the way the plot in the third part evolved into Sidney being the only thing blocking from the romantic relationship to happen, it left an aftertaste that she was the only one that sacrificed something to make it happen, since Reagan continued in the military for at least eleven more years after the book ended. Even if Sidney realized her life plan was not actually the dream life for her, still could it be something else that did not worked with Reagan life style.

The third part girlfriend that Sidney had and the whole attack where Reagan was working in Poland really felt was an Hollywood rom-com hook then anything else, but it’s okay because we are talking about a romance book, just noting this here as it was a feeling I got from when reading those parts.

An addendum for anyone who might interest: there are a lot of steamy scenes in this book, and definitely it’s not a “fade to black” type of book. It’s very detailed and does happens quite often on the second half of the book, especially.

There was, although, just two scenes where it was mentioned that one of them started a more sexual thing when the other was still asleep - as like a caracter was awaken with the other kissing and doing more steamy stuff to their body - that really made me uncomfortable. It was mentioned that neither of Reagan or Sidney felt violated in anyway about that (they both do that to each other in two different occasions as told in the book) but it might be an trigger to someone reading this. So, therefore, noting it here.

My rating is 3,5 stars, although Goodreads won’t let half stars sadly, just because I felt uncomfortable in the scenes described in the last paragraph and I didn’t quite agree with the way Sidney was put was the one preventing the romance to work and Reagan not changing anything in her life to make it work. But, aside from that, it is a good romance book, I enjoying reading it very much. My favorite part was the Italy one for sure! Loved how their romance was build in the beginning there.

Thank you NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the ARC!

The book follows Reagan and Sydney through snapshots of their time together, which all ended with them leaving each other. It was that initial push and pull dynamic that caught my eye.
It really focused on the romance aspect as it didn't delve a lot into their everyday life or work life at all. And it killed the experience for me a bit.
Anyways, talking about the romance, it was done well for the first few meetings they had, but it went downhill after that. The timeskips with the romance development made it disjointed. They fell back to their routine they had with each other regardless of how much time had passed, and i just felt it was a bit too easy.
Also, the time skips didn't feel like a timeskips at all, if you told me that a yr had passed for that 6 yr time skip, i would have believed you.
The secondary characters having very little presence in the book which was quite saddening to see.
The constant meetings they have with each other at different points of their life was fun for a while until it became a tad frustrating.
And that ending was not it.

What starts as a simple meet cute in an Italian coffee shop turns into a heart wrenching decade spanning forbidden romance.

From the moment Reagan Jennings first spots Sydney Adams in an Italian coffee shop she’s immediately drawn to her. She knows what the attraction means but she knows she can’t act on it, at least not while she’s in the Army and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is still in effect. It doesn’t matter how many times she tells herself they can just be friends, as she and Sydney continue to bump into each other over the years their chemistry continues to be electric leaving readers to wonder can they make it work this time?

Many stories about DADT focus on the characters’ fear of being caught but for Reagen this was a secondary concern to her integrity which brought a fresh take to this type of story. Most of the novel takes place after the repeal of DADT which I wasn’t expecting. This means that it’s other things, like Sydney’s distrust of the military that keep the MCs apart.

I really enjoyed that this is more than just a second chance romance. The way Sydney and Reagen keep running into each other and the serendipity of it really makes it feel like fate. I did find it a bit hard to believe that they were so willfully ignorant about just letting things happen as if they wouldn’t end it heartbreak. Additionally, I would have liked to see more of Reagen’s family in the novel. Only her brother Jasper showed up despite this idea that they are a competitive family and Reagan feels the need to out do them. Even Jasper was there just to help provide an address.

Overall, this was a fresh take on a familiar trope where you could feel the chemistry drawing the characters together.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC!

This book is a heartfelt journey through love, friendship, and the tough choices we make in life. It kicks off with a charming scene in an Italian café where Reagan, a young Army lieutenant, swoops in to rescue Sydney. Their instant connection blossoms into a beautiful friendship as they spend a magical fall exploring Italy together. But, as all good things do, their time comes to an end when Sydney has to head back to the States. Reagan, bound by the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy, struggles with her feelings for Sydney, leading to a bittersweet final night filled with an unforgettable kiss.

What follows is a rollercoaster of emotions over the next fifteen years as Reagan and Sydney keep crossing paths, each separation leaving them with deeper scars. The story really captures the push and pull between duty and personal happiness. Just when it seems like they might finally have a chance to be together—thanks to the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell—the Army threatens to send them in opposite directions again.

This epic love story beautifully explores the themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the complexities of following your heart. It makes you think about what really matters in life and whether we’re making the right choices. Reagan and Sydney's journey is both touching and relatable, reminding us that sometimes love can slip through our fingers, even when we know exactly what we want. If you enjoy stories that tug at your heartstrings and make you reflect on love's challenges, this book is definitely worth a read!

I enjoyed The Heart Wants written by Krystina Rivers. The story follows Reagan and Sydney through their past and present.

The structure and pacing of the story felt off. I liked the idea of having different part for different moments in their relationship but it made it feel long and for 50+ pages I was wishing that we would get to the present day.

The plot was readable and bingable.
I enjoyed the sapphic representation, especially within the military.

The characters were lovable. I was routing for them and felt for Alice. This shows that the writing is able to bring out emotion.

The plot was easy and simple which made the read bingable. The Writing style was simple which is perfect for a romance.

The setting was nice, having their lives set in Naples, Munich airport, Boston and DC brought variation. I did feel that the stereotypes of European cities were slightly off. Italians aremt famous for their croissants that's France. It was obvious that the novel was written by a non-european author, however it didn't affect my enjoyment.

The ending felt slightly rushed compared to the rest of the novel. I wish we had more closure and more them when they actually had made a commitment to one an other.

Overall I would recommend this, as a easy romance read.

"..the butterflies always present when she was with Reagan started to do huge swoops in her belly. She wondered if they were spelling out Reagan's name like someone doodling in a high school notebook."

Thank you to NetGalley, Bold Strokes Books and Krystina Rivers for an ARC of The Heart Wants. I really enjoyed meeting Reagan and Sydney and getting to follow their love story. This was a slow burn sapphic friends to lovers romance that was worth the wait.

- showed experience living through DADT in the US military which i found pretty interesting
- they are both so in love from the start as baby gays just kiss already
- i love the slow evolution and how their lives kept overlapping with random meetings and same place same time moments
- right person wrong time vibes
- loved the sweet romantic moments
- the spice was spicing in this book hello! loved how queer love and s*x was shown in this story
- woah what! what a twist! was not expecting that but we love a grand gesture and a last minute urgent flight
- the ending was so beautiful (would've loved to see a proposal/wedding scene but loved the ending scene)

Disliked:
- i don't usually like reading about characters in the military (i'm not american) but this was an exception and being in the military was integral to Reagan's character and their story
- Viviana was not the vibe (i know i am meant to hate her but i really did)

overall a beautiful queer love story that i enjoyed reading!

I read this book almost in one go, only (and barely) stopping because I had to go to my evening class.
In the beginning, I was a bit confused about the timeline and when the story takes place, especially reading the first chapters in combination with the blurb. Once that was clear, it was a real joy to read this story.
The book starts in the present and then goes back 15 years. So we see a snippet of what's happening in the present and then we go back to what happened to the characters in the past.
It was well written and a nice format to read, especially as it was refreshing, seeing that not many books make such time jumps.
The characters are also well thought out with enough history (or baggage) to make it interesting. I liked Reagan from the beginning even though she was struggling with not being able to be her true self. Sydney on the other hand, had to grow on me, as you understand her better while you're progressing in the book when more elements of her past are revealed.
I would definitely recommend this story to others as it is a nice romance with quite some drama and angst interspersed throughout the book.

This book is both a sweet romance and a heart wrenching tale (until the end).
The main story extends over 15 years from when Reagan and Sydney first meet in Italy. They meet up at various places around the world.
This book is very well written to convey the emotions of the characters. Especially useful in the Don't Ask Don't Tell regime.
There is breast cancer in this story - and as luck would have it when I was reading the bit about tests to see if it returned I too was having tests to see if it had returned. This made me a bit reluctant to read on, but I also really wanted to as I was enjoying it. So I did.
In some ways the characters are really infuriating - but they are also completely relatable and they entice you into the story.

There is of course an epilogue - which hopped 11 years into the future. This means that the actual whole story extended over 26 years. That is some storytelling.
The book is quite long - it needs to be as the length allowed the space for the depth of the characters to be explored.

This is an honest review in exchange for the ARC.

Reagan is in the army for the long haul. It’s all she’s ever wanted. Sydney is a corporate lawyer with big plans and huge ambition. She will achieve great things in life. The two meet in Italy when young and bond strongly but life separates them and Reagan is unable to be herself if she wants to succeed in the army. Sydney has a poor opinion of army people because of family issues.

Both women meet and separate over many years and no time ever seems quite right for them to have a future. But life gets in the way and things happen and they both start to question what is important. Fear makes them reluctant to admit their feelings and the separations continue… until….

The ending is a bit rushed and I’m not sure their relationship would have survived all the separations but this is fiction and very enjoyable storytelling. The ancillary characters are well developed and add greatly to the narrative. My advice would be to curl up with a coffee ~ or several ~ and follow the journey.

The story of Raegan and Sydney spans over 15 years with an epilogue 11 years later.
The story follows the two as they navigate the time of DADT and Raegan’s commitment to her life in the military and goal to become a brigadier general. It is a heart wrenching story of life choices and protecting one’s heart even though the heart wants what it is being denied.
The author writes the story with such detail of feeling and a dive into each character’s thinking that enables the reader to really understand the reasons for their decisions and the resulting emotional torment time after time.
The Heart Wants is a solid read that isn’t all sunshine and roses, but that wouldn’t do the story justice anyway. Instead, it is realistic and has depth of meaning. I loved the follow up of the epilogue 11 years later 💜

I received an arc from NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books. I leave this review voluntarily.

This was my second book by this author and I had a very hard time connecting with the characters as it time jumped through fifteen years.

Starts off when Reagan and Sydney meet again in a cafe then it jumps back when they first met in Italy when Reagan rescues Sydney with her order. A semester abroad brings feelings for both, but Reagan is in the military living under don't ask don't tell and Sydney is out and proud lesbian. The romance isn't meant to be until. It spans over a decade where they are never in the same place for long and feelings get deeper and deeper.

When they meet again in the present time, Sydney has a girlfriend and once again Reagan feels like her heart will be broken by the woman she's never stopped loving. I didn't like either MC really, regardless of their issues, it just bounced around too much for me to get into the story.

Overall, not a bad book, but not one I liked. I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Wow, this book was just so good! I'm a veteran so a military romance is right up my alley. I was especially intrigued because it's a saphhic romance with two women, one who is in the military during the time of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. This romance spans more than a decade and is forbidden, but begins with a meet cute between Sydney and Reagan, and their journey is both heartbreaking and beautiful. They work hard at figuring out ways to be together and know they are destined for each other. I really liked the military aspect of this book, and I felt it was written well. There is a great plot with a lot of character growth and a dual POV that gives you great insight to the characters, Overall, I really enjoyed this book.

WOW! What an insightful emotional read. Reagan Jennings, career military, living under DADT. Sydney Adams, corporate attorney, looking to take care of her family. I have not read many stories about individuals serving under DADT. When Sydney and Reagan meet in a coffee shop in Italy, it starts a fifteen year "friendship/relationship". This read had me thinking about relationships, obstacles and what it feels like when you meet "the one". I appreciated how both Sydney and Reagan hold true to what is important to them. That really resonated with me. Giving up what is important to you when you do not want to can be a relationship breakdown. There is family dynamics and important friendships, especially Sydney's good friend Aliyah. Enjoyable read that made me think and in my opinion, that is a good thing.

I got the time-lapse of how this story unfolds, but if felt at times like if this was narrated by someone else who knew them instead of themselves. We get just glimpses of their story throughout the years when I'd prefer just a few, but in more depth. And i think that's why i didn't enjoy this as much..
Another thing is... When couples dont get together because outside circumstances is one thing and in this book is an issue but when couple don't get together because miscommunication and themselves being too stubborn... that's when I get annoyed, and this is exactly what happened here.
I did end up liking the story, and i like the subjects it dealt with, but it could have been better.

The Heart Wants

I greatly enjoy all the books I've read by Krystina Rivers. This book was a span of 15 years. Happenstance meetings after the initial meeting. The chemistry seems to grow with each encounter.
I love their relationship and how it just falls back together upon each reunion. In a way, it is a slow-burn to get to the happy ending.
I love the writing style. The flow and the premise had me infatuated from the beginning, not wanting to put it down.
The secondary characters were well done. I would have loved to have a mention of one of the friends we met in the first half. It was wonderful to see characters from another one of the authors books.
All the books I've read by Rivers have been enjoyable. I will be rereading this one soon. I look forward to more in the future.
