★★★★☆ | ...Why the hell didn't any of y'all tell me about this kooky-ass Kakutō funhouse mirror of a series?

How is it that I collect a ton of abstruse manga - stuff that has ≤0.001% of the readership and reputation that this does - but I had to wait til the Summer of goddamn 2026 to even hear about Baki!?

I would've clambered aboard this bugfuck riverboat casino the second it started getting English releases if I had only known it existed.

Après avoir terminé ma chronique du premier tome, je me suis aussitôt jeté sur le second. Je ne pouvais pas attendre plus longtemps avant de découvrir si la suite allait autant me plaire que le premier tome. Et bien la réponse est oui! J’ai autant aimé le premier que ce second. Je sens que je vais prendre plaisir à dévorer chacun des tomes de la saga, que je vais surtout attendre chaque sortie avec grande impatience. Cette série est tout simplement merveilleuse et c’est une vraie pépite. Je me demande vraiment comment j’ai fais jusqu’ici pour ne pas l’avoir lu!

Dans ce second tome, on retrouve Baki qui, après avoir prouvé sa supériorité face à un karatéka et un boxeur, se prépare à un combat d’un tout autre calibre dans une arène secrète où tous les coups sont permis. On dit que son adversaire, Shinogi, possède une technique secrète particulièrement redoutable..

Ce second tome est clairement dans la lignée du premier. Dans cette série on ne perds pas de temps. On est toujours dans l’intrigue à fond. On n’a pas de chichis, pas de longueurs, l’ennui n’a clairement pas sa place dans ce manga. J’ai l’impression que ça va toujours à mille à l’heure. On a de la baston à tout va et moi j’adore ça. Baki continue de s’entraîner encore et encore. Lorsqu’il apprend le nom de son adversaire, il va l’étudier pendant si longtemps, qu’il connait tout de lui. Son prochain combat contre Shinogi était époustouflant. Son adversaire est surnommé le sécateur et on comprend parfaitement bien pourquoi! Ses techniques étaient complètement dingue. Mais Baki n’a pas dit son dernier mot. C’est fou à quel point Baki est très fort. Mais comme il ne cesse de s’entraîner et d’apprendre, il ne cesse d’évoluer encore et encore. Ce second tome se termine d’une façon qui nous donne envie de se jeter sur la suite immédiatement. Le troisième tome s’annonce tout simplement incroyable et je sens qu’on va en prendre plein les yeux encore.

Je ne pensais vraiment pas que j’allais autant apprécier ce manga pour être honnête. Je ne m’attendais vraiment pas à ce que cette histoire soit aussi géniale. Je l’ai déjà dit et je le redis, ce manga est une véritable pépite. Ne passez plus à côté! Si vous aimez les arts martiaux, les combats, l’action quasi permanente, clairement foncez ce titre est fait pour vous. Je suis déjà beaucoup trop impatiente de découvrir ce que la suite nous réserve! vivement que je me plonge dans les prochains tomes!

Baki is a beast! The fights are crazy and the techniques take you back to black belt theater. I especially loved the jab at Hulk Hogan and the old wrestlers. Plus to think of Baki's father being the monster he is just makes me wonder what he was really like.

Good but slightly less interesting to read than the previous volume. The first half had us introduced to the underground arena which was mentioned in the last volume, and we had the Kosho vs Baki fight, which was solid. The second half I found a lot more interesting with the first mention of Yujiro and a new fighter for Baki to face that gets hyped up then gets destroyed by a mysterious figure who is revealed at the end of the volume. Generally, it's still a fun read that has me interested in continuing.

Crazy how Yujiro is on the cover, but hasn’t even shown up in the story yet😭 the cover arts are cool asf though so I don’t mind lol.

I liked Baki’s first (shown) fight in the arena. Crazy how Itagaki spent like 3 or 4 chapters gassing up this wrestler guy that Baki’s gonna fight, just to have him get replaced haha. I think the wrestler guy got a little too much focus just to get beat up offscreen imo, but the twist was still cool tbf. Can’t wait for Baki’s next fight in the next volume!

Itagaki blends character backstory in between brutal fight sequences to balance world-building in a way that creates suspense for the fights overall. We slowly learn about this scary opponent as Itagaki doles out information to make him creepier as the fight goes on, ramping up our concern for Baki’s safety. There are also some nice tid-bits throughout this volume of Baki’s past and we get a taste for why Baki is putting himself through all these fights. However, some of the wonderful side characters from volume one are completely absent in this volume.
