I've never given a Magic Tree House book less than four stars, but this one just doesn't pack the usual punch. My daughter described this one as "a snooze-fest", and my son here tends to agree and so do I. I gave it two stars, but my son here is looking over my shoulder and said it deserves one more star, so we've all come to a three star agreement. The characters aren't very memorable. All the dialogue gets pretty boring between these characters. It was a push to finish this one: that neeeeeever happens. What I figure is you can't knock every single book out of the park and this was bound to happen. We're not sore, we just want more!

Eleanor says: Jack and Annie went to Egypt, but not in ancient time. They went in the 1800s. They were looking for Florence Nightingale. This is one of the journeys that they were looking for a secret of greatness. I won’t tell what the secret is, so you can read it and find out. Ali and his grandfather Mustafa were helping them cross the Nile. Florence Nightingale was sad because her family didn’t want her to be a nurse. The Bickersons also thought ladies shouldn’t do work. They were cranky and mean and selfish and complained the whole time. Koku was baby baboon who liked to grab Jack’s ears, but he was so cute. The jackals were mean and chased them. Jackals look kind of like hyenas and wolves. This was a really good book and I’m glad I wasn’t in this book, so the jackals didn’t get me.

We (kids and I) are a big fan of Magic Tree House books of course. I had high hopes with this book since Florence Nightingale was one of my childhood favorite heroines. I would have liked to see more of her in the book.

Jack and Annie are asked to find the third secret of greatness from Florence Nightingale in Egypt. They get to Egypt using the Magic treehouse and find Florence Nightingale but she is nothing like they think she is going to be. Annie did a report on her and she was a great nurse, but when they meet her she is not a nurse at all. At first she wants nothing to do with Jack and Annie, so they have to figure out a way to get to know her so she can tell them the secret of greatness. One of Florence's friends, Countess von Kensky has a monkey named Koku and she asked Annie if she would watch Koku for a day. During this time they try to follow Florence though Egypt so they could run into her, but Koku runs away from a predator so Jack and Annie have to climb a cliff to get her. They use magic powder to become good climbers, but on their way back down the time runs out and they fall from the cliff and get injured. They try to start back to where they are staying and they run into Florence who takes them back and cares for them. Annie tells her how good of a nurse she will be and in the end she tells them the third secret of greatness which is meaning and purpose. Then they travel back home and no time has passed and they are no longer injured.

1)After meeting Florence for the first time did you think it is the same person that Annie did her report on? why or why not?
2)How would you describe Mustafa? why?
3)After meeting Jack and Annie what do you think Florence will go on and do with her life?
4)How did Jack's opinion of Florence change?
5)When you hear the words meaning and purpose what do you think of?

YAWN. One of the weaker entries. Florence Nightingale was purportedly the focus of this story but she makes very little appearance. Lots of ridiculous sturm and drang as Jack and Annie encounter various authentic but uncontextualized characters, resulting in a mish-mash. On to the next.

In the magic treehouse series, not only in Merlin Missions, Jack and Annie found a magic treehouse. They soon discovered that in the magic treehouse there were lots of books and when they point to a picture in the book and make a wish to go there the magic treehouse just magically transports them there! They soon learned that the treehouse belongs to Morgan Le Fay from Camelot. Jack and Annie have helped Morgan with a humongous amount of missions in all places and time periods with the help of the magic treehouse. However in Merlin Missions it is not however Morgan that sends them on these missions. It is Merlin, a fantastic magician. During Merlin Missions, Jack and Annie make two friends named Teddy and Kathleen. They soon completed four missions that showed they could properly handle magic. On those missions, they were given a book of ten magic rhymes to use on four missions. Each rhyme can only be used once. Since they succeeded in those four missions, they were given the Wand of Dianthus. A magic wand that could create magic. Soon Merlin was not well, and not cheerful at all. Jack and Annie found four secrets of happiness for him, and now he is happy again. However the biggest thing that cheered him up was a little penguin named Penny Jack and Annie had gotten from their last mission to find the last secret of happiness for Merlin. That mission had taken place in Antarctica. Then, after those missions, they helped a girl named Augusta, Mozart, Louis Armstrong, and Charles Dickens. After that, they helped save Penny from a spell Teddy accidentally casted on him by finding four special objects. Last adventure, they figured out they were going to find four secrets of greatnesses for Merlin. They already found two, and this is their mission where they are going to find the third secret of greatness…

In this book, as usual, for a reason, Jack and Annie decided to visit the magic treehouse. Today they are going to find the third secret of greatness for Merlin? With who? With Florence! Florence Nightingale! In the treehouse, the note from Merlin helped them figure this out. They also found a research book that says they are going to Ancient Egypt. Annie knows quite a lot about Florence and doesn’t remember that she ever been to Egypt. How surprising. They also found a ring and a potion. The ring glows when they find a secret of greatness and when they smell the potion they can have any talent they wish for one hour. They decided to get started. They pointed at the research book and wished to go there. They all of a sudden appeared there, the place their mission is going to take place. They first heard donkeys. They went down the treehouse. They met a boy named Ali. He was selling donkeys. Later, they met a English traveller named Selina. She says she is friends with Florence and offered to take them to her. So far so good. However, Florence is a very famous nurse. Selina says the Florence she is talking about is not a nurse at all! Have they found the wrong Florence? Later, they met Florence on a boat. They also met a countess and a couple. A very impolite and rude couple. They are not kind at all. Soon, Florence left mainly because of this rude couple. It would be much better if they weren’t on this boat. Then Florence might not have left. Selina also left. Soon, even Jack and Annie got into a fight with the couple and were ordered to leave the boat. They were happy to leave. But how about Florence? If they leave, they won’t be able to learn from Florence? They left. Then, they hid and waited. Soon, they bumped into the countess and her pet monkey. The pet monkey is named Koku. Koku really likes Annie. The Countess asked Annie to babysit Koku for a few hours. In spite of their mission, Annie accepted. Now, they needed to take care of a monkey and complete their mission. They soon noticed Florence. She was about to go to the Valley of the Queens. Annie and Jack managed to ride with her to the western shore. Then, she said she must leave. Jack and Annie said it’s okay. However, she left and they were upset. They must stay with her to learn a secret of greatness with her. So, they rented donkeys from Ali and followed Florence. Ali warned them that there might be dangerous stuff out there before dark like Jackals. Jack and Annie said they would be in the way before dark. Not long after, they saw some tombs. Jack turned away. However, Annie just had to see what was inside and nothing was stopping her. Their camels started acting strangely. Then, they ran away. Something leapt out of the tomb. Jackals! They had to run. Koku soon attracted the jackals’ attention. The jackals went chasing after Koku. Jack and Annie rushed to save Koku. However, Koku was on a high cliff. They couldn’t get her! She climbed on the cliff to get away from the jackals! Now she can’t get down! And neither can Jack or Annie get up to rescue Koku! Later, for a reason, because they rescued Koku they got hurt! How can they get back to Florence and learn a secret of greatness from her when they are badly hurt? And is it the right Florence? Selina says Florence is not a very famous nurse. Can they even get home with their injuries? What are they going to do?

I'm super excited to tell you all about High Time for Heroes, the awesome book from the Magic Tree House Merlin Mission series. In this adventure, Jack and Annie travel to a place called the Isle of Avalon, and guess what? They become heroes!

So, in this magical place, Jack and Annie get one hour of greatness. It means they can do one thing they're really good at. And you know what they choose? Rock climbing! That's so cool! But, oh no, Jack slips while climbing. But don't worry, even professional climbers sometimes slip, so it's okay.

The lesson in this book is all about focus. Jack and Annie realize that if they focus and believe in themselves, they can conquer any challenge. Just like in exams or tests, if you focus and don't get distracted, you can do really well!

They also save a little monkey named Cuckoo. He's super cute, but he's scared. Jack remembers his purpose as a professional rock climber and goes back on the rock to save Cuckoo. It's a secret of greatness - having a purpose and meaning in life.

I think the book is awesome because it shows us that we all have greatness within us. If we focus and believe in ourselves, we can do amazing things and be heroes too! It's a super fun and exciting adventure, and I couldn't stop reading until the end.

You should totally read High Time for Heroes if you love magic, adventure, and learning important life lessons. Jack and Annie's journey will inspire you to find your purpose and be brave in everything you do.

So, be focused, believe in yourself, and go on this amazing adventure with Jack and Annie! Trust me, and you won't be able to put the book down! Happy reading!

If you're a fan of this book, you won't want to miss my full review on my YouTube channel.

Jack and Annie travel through time with the help of a magic treehouse. They hop, skip, and jump around the world solving riddles, gathering clues, and having adventures.

In this book, Jack and Annie are sent on a mission to visit Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. They are given a very specific task: they have to collect a secret to greatness from Florence Nightingale.

They are taken aback, however, at Florence in the flesh. She is timid and quiet, and definitely not a nurse. Not yet, anyway. Will Jack and Annie inspire her to become a nurse? Will they find out what that big secret is?

Jack and Annie are on a mission to find four great truths from four great persons in history. The first person was Alexander the Great, second was from Harry Houdini, the third is from Florence Nightingale.
As they are transported to Egypt to find their third truth, they read up on Florence Nightingale. She was a nurse during the Crimean War, she studied in Germany to become a nurse and she established the way for women everywhere to follow there dreams. Her family was against her becoming a nurse, or working at all. They wanted her to be a Society Woman, to marry and be a housewife. Florence decided to follow her dreams instead.

Reid and I read this together for reading practice. I read every other page to keep him from getting discouraged. He had listened to it before but on his own (several times last year) but it was new to me. I found the beginning very slow, and the plot not particularly interesting on the whole. Reid only remembered the cliff scene from previous reads and I can see why, it was the only exciting part. There are many more exciting magic tree house books out there unless you are a completist I would read some of the others instead.

My favorite character is Mustafa because he did the right thing when he took injured people across the river and he did not want money.
What surprised me is that baboons can shake their fists at whoever they are angry at.
I would not change the ending because they got injured and when they got back home they were not injured anymore.
I would recommend this book because you learn so much about Florence Nightingale's history.

This book is literally my entire childhood. The magic tree house series is what got me into reading. This book has been sitting on my shelf for three years, ever since i met the author and she handed me it with a smile on her face. It's probably the last and final magic treehouse book i ever read, and boy was it a good one

In this book Jack and Annie meet Florence Nightingale before she was FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE. I liked it because it showed that legendary people are really just people who struggled and made small decisions along the way that led to their greatness.

I started this series after reading the original Magic Treehouse series. I like how this series includes not just Morgan, but Merlin, Teddy, & Kathleen, too. I like how Jack & Annie get to participate in these books a little more than the original series by using magical items. I also like how these books are longer. It is more story to enjoy. I really enjoyed this book. Would recommend.

Aside from the fact that we are skipping around I enjoy these later ones more than the early books since they get to meet actual historical figures. In this case Florence Nightingale makes an appearance.

I almost knocked it down a star because the baby baboon is creepy looking.

This book sent Jack and Annie to Florence Nightingale's lifetime. They met her before she decided to become a nurse. Annie, who has read about Nightingale's work is disappointed that Florence isn't a nurse. She basically tells her she will be a good nurse, almost blowing their cover.

Jack and Annie encounter Florence Nightingale, before she is famous, in Egypt ca. 1850. Good for reread when studying Egypt.
