Under the Influence was recommended to me as I'm early in my faith journey. While I appreciate the author’s passion, sincerity, and experience as the founder of Freedom House, I found the book uncomfortable. I couldn't understand why there was such a heavy emphasis in the beginning on people of faith not being "weird" until it became so heavy-handed about speaking in tongues for much of the second half. I wish the book had stayed focused on the role of the Holy Spirit in one’s life.

That shift in focus felt alienating for where I am spiritually. Rather than helping me feel encouraged, it left me feeling unsure, which was off-putting. I can see how this book may resonate deeply with readers who share that theological framework, but for those newer to faith or still finding their footing, it may feel like being dropped into the deep end before you’ve learned to swim or just plain old "weird", despite the book’s early effort to preemptively normalize the experience with reassurance that things wouldn’t get “weird,” they very much did.

This book is a great resource to learn about and activate the power of the Holy Spirit in your life. Pastor Troy Maxwell breaks down the perceived complexities and objections to the Holy Spirit into easy to understand concepts all based on scriptural truth and practical application to guide the reader into truth & freedom to live under the influence of Holy Spirit. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, underlined & highlighted many parts, I prayed the prayers included in each chapter and finish the book feeling empowered and equipped to experience the power of Holy Spirit in my everyday life.
