Planning a wedding for three is the least of their problems. Since nearly losing Jay, Henry is driven by an inescapable urge to collar his submissives. Jay's certain to be all in, but Alice has fled from commitment before. Negotiating their needs is a treacherous tightrope. Can he sketch a path to forever? As Alice's career takes off, the new demands steal time from Henry and Jay. The stress is crushing when every decision hurts the ones she loves. She'll have to rig a solution before she cracks under the strain and takes her lovers down with her. After years of resisting, Jay is learning big lessons in therapy. Loosening his family's stranglehold leaves him free to explore what—and who—he wants in his life. But with Alice at work all the time and a deadline looming for the trio to vacate their apartment, stability is hard to find. Can Henry, Alice, and Jay hold themselves together when the world keeps pushing them apart? New to USA Today bestselling author M.Q. Barber’s Neighborly Affection series? This friends-to-lovers bisexual menage romance saga is best read in order. Dominance and submission is the name of the game for this committed MMF poly triad.
Start with Playing the Game or the prequel book Becoming His Master . For a different perspective on the events of Playing the Game , read it alongside Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories . Praise for the Neighborly Affection “The writing is quick, smart and witty . The character development, especially of the heroine, and plot progression work well with this trio.” – Shelly, reviewer for Red Hot Books “Ms. Barber delves into the culture of Dominance and submission with compelling grace, introducing us to Alice, Henry, and Jay and all of their delightful emotional and sexual complexities .” – Sophia Jones, author of The Pharaoh and the Curator “It’s steamy and sexy enough, and doesn’t hold back on the BDSM angle, but this erotic romance has so much more to offer than titillation or fantasy .” – D.B. Sieders, author of Red Shoes for Lab Blues “I will read this one again. The sex scenes were off the charts hot. The characters were amazing. Henry melted me.” – Jessi Gage, author of Wishing for a Highlander “Chapter after chapter, I was captivated by the very real process of a woman that discovers her submissive self and how a man tamed her, day after day, week after week, month after month. … It is the kind of book that make you yeah, that makes sense. If I was in her shoes, I would act like this.” – Mary, reviewer for Mary’s Menage Whispers “The writer had a way to bring you in and make you feel soulful about what they were sharing. I felt like I was made to consider each decision they made about what they needed and why they needed it. This wasn’t just a wham-bam book, it was a story of Alice’s emotions surrounding this couple she had grown to care for .” — Mistress L, reviewer for S&M’s Book Obsessions
I am a former Midwestern gal who well knows the joy of flopping down in a field for an afternoon and composing stories about the shapes in the clouds. As it turns out, adulthood doesn't have to be so different from childhood.
Sharing those stories is a new thing for me. I hope readers will love the characters as much as I do.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this novel and I tried my hardest to spread it out and take my time, but I ended up reading it twice so I could soak up all the details. My first read through involved a lot of tears, I am so emotionally attached to this trio and I am so happy and proud of them in this. Definitely keep tissues next to you, both for the heartfelt happiness and the total jealousy. I would sell my kidney to meet men as amazing as Henry and Jay (and hey if Alice came along that's a bonus too). I am itching for more already and it hasn't even officially released. The growth and character development never ceases to amaze me, M.Q keeps them growing like a true human would. You find yourself rooting for them, and wanting side stories of the people surrounding them as you grow to love them as well. Well done M.Q, I'm proud of you. You knocked it out of the park, yet again ❤️
This book was a reunion of old friends I met in Books 1-6 and Tuesdays with Jay. Alice, Henry, and Jay are vivid personalities with familiar anxieties and fears. The book begins within weeks of the end of Book 6 and exterior challenges impact the three along with their individual internal musings. Spicy scenes at home mix with ordinary everyday life. Their willingness to publicly commit to each other, their search for a new home as well as Alice's work challenges advance the plot in a very believable manner. I've re-read the series several time and eagerly await each new installment. Their experiences and advancement in self growth are believable and fun; senses of humor, physical play, and a consistent story development make Binding Their Hearts a happy addition to the growing series. The trio's marriage ceremony is warm and loving, the love shared with family and friends is a balm after the threats to their relationship in previous books. I love sharing this series and am happy to recommend this book.
Excellent addition to the series! Jay’s progress in therapy is realistic and his therapist seems really good. The romance and connection between Jay, Alice, and Henry is top notch! And chapter 15 might be one of the hottest things I’ve ever read. Wow!
I received an advanced copy in exchange for writing a review. I requested to be an advanced copy reader because I couldn't wait to receive this installment, and my impatience paid off!
We return to our trio, each looking for a sign of commitment and forever. Everyone has some significant growth, but Jay especially learns to draw and enforce boundaries with negative elements in his life. Seeing the three solidify their relationship with the support of the people who love them was lovely. Can't wait for the finale!
Oh, my heart! Like many readers of this superb series, I’ve had an emotional attachment to Henry, Alice, and Jay since the beginning of their beautiful journey. Each book is a feast of gorgeous prose and illuminating insights into the human psyche. In this next to last book of the series, Ms. Barber skillfully guides her characters toward a HEA that not only had me green with envy, but also crying happy, happy tears throughout. I highly recommend the Neighborly Affection series. It’s one you’ll revisit many times and learn something new each time.
I have been anticipating this book since I discovered this author earlier this year. Please if, you haven’t read this author, you need to start with book 1, otherwise, you’re going to be lost and it will be your fault lol.
For those of you who have read books 1-6 and have yet to dive in to book 7, here's a quick recap.
Book 6 was a doozy, with Jay's awful sister, Peggy. In this book, he finally goes to therapy and what a wonderful therapist Danny turned out to be for our golden-retriever, Jay. You will see how much Jay has changed, in the best possible way. He finally realized that horrible relationship with his older sister, Peggy was just toxic and wait to you find out more tea on her.
Alice is still that strong female Domme for her stud, and she is finally recognized at work with a promotion, but at what price? You know, I always had my issues with Alice, don't get me wrong, I like her. I love her for Jay and Henry, she needed these two in her life for sure. Ms. Independent woman who didn't want anyone to claim her, well she totally changed her tuned. Her insecurities or the way she gets in her head is a bit frustrating, but nevertheless, this is how her character is, and she has come a very long way from book 1.
Oh Henry, Oh Henry. Gah, I love that man. For those in the lifestyle should aspire to have a Dom like Henry. He is purely the best at making sure his "pets" are very well taken care of, whether it be a flogging for Alice or praise for his boy, Jay. But boy he showed a different side (nothing bad), just so un-Henry like, but I loved it for him.
So much development for this trio, and great things for their future. I cannot believe that book 8 may be the last in the series. This trio has left a lasting impression.
A side note, these books are written in third person, if you are not a fan, I will say, Ms. Barber writes them real well and you will not be lost.
So for disclosure, I received an advanced copy in agreement for writing a review. I requested to be an advanced copy reader because I love these books. All my pre-judgment cards are on the table.
This book really felt like a winding down on the series as a whole. All of the high anxiety of the relationships and how they were going to progress in their relationships is pretty much done. All decisions made. Now they just have to decide how to get to the rest of their lives. Which doesn't mean there is no anxiety or stress, life is still life and provides plenty of opportunity to muck things up. But the large interpersonal issues have been solved, and now the details are left to go. And yes there is a wedding towards the end.
I truly enjoyed how this book discussed the different challenges each person went through, as well as what they had waiting for them when they got to the other side of those challenges.
I'd really love to discuss more, but then I'd just talk about everything and this is supposed to be spoiler free. I have written and removed many things from this review, because I felt like I was oversharing. If you have read the story this far it is because you enjoyed the series. Things are winding down in this one, which is what Henry, Alice, and Jay deserve to be quiet honest. Far more spice in this one too, so if that is your favorite part of these stories, this one will make you happy.
Oh my Gosh! I have never felt so happy for a set of book characters!
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
First, I recommend reading this book in the series order. Why is the series order important? As I read the last book, I felt anger, sadness, and a lot of hope for my favorite people. However, in the continuation of the story, all I felt was lots of happiness, and a little bit of annoyance, anger, and pettiness, to be honest ( I had fun ideas on how to get back at Peggy). The progression of feelings made things feel complete.
In this book, Henry, Alice, and Jay took important strides toward personal and relationship growth. I especially enjoyed Henry’s moment of impulsivity, Jay taking the reigns to plan the best event ever, and Alice learning a bit more about letting go. I also LOVED seeing the relationships with Jay’s siblings grow after the madness of the last book.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to cheer for the underdogs and watch them succeed. This book was a fun read full of ups and very few downs, but most importantly, it made me feel good and happy.
I hope you all enjoy this book and learn to love these characters and this book as much as I have. I warn you, if you learn to love them as much as I do your expectations for relationships will change and you may grow a Henry-like voice in the back of your head that keeps you making healthy choices.
Vulnerability, growth, acceptance, but most of all love. Binding their Hearts is the 7th book in the Neighborly Affection series. We continue on the trio's journey of building their life together; a wedding to plan, a new home to find, and jobs to navigate. Through all of this, their vulnerability shows as each finds their footing and grow into their trio. This book is all about growing by letting go, trusting each other, finding their place, and learning the meaning of family and support. The story is a multiple POV and dives deep into the feelings, fears, and acceptance of the trio, yes, even Henry. That vulnerability, from all, is what makes this chapter of their lives my favorite. I cried and laughed right along with them through this journey and can't wait to see how it ends in book 8.
The wait was worth it. Unfortunately I received this ARC in the middle of moving myself! How I envied these three characters their packers and movers…sigh.
Barber has a light touch in this one. It’s like the reader is on a merry-go-round, with the changes in perspective certainly, but also it’s like if you blink you’ll miss something.
The pacing moves through weeks quickly. But just when a few chapters are settling in and getting comfy, we are off to the next one. A week or days later. Wait, what happened? What’d I miss?
This was the fastest 46 chapters so far! Was it really the longest book?
Congrats to Jay for finally putting his progress where his ability was. To Henry for being Henry. And to Alice for easing up.
I highlighted so much, especially the way with words. I chuckled a lot. But I won’t quote here. The editing was almost too tight.
My only complaint *really* is that there was a preview at the end. So I thought a lot more was coming but alas I was left on the floor…::smirk::.
Well, what can you do. Except ask, when’s the next book?
What a gorgeous addition to this fabulous series! Hearing from all three of these delightful characters, we are taken on a journey of learning, self-discovery, love, heat, friendship and commitment. Henry, Alice and Jay have become beloved friends whose lives I love to read about. Each one is so very different, but, together, they are perfect. There is introspection, which helps peel away more layers and show us new facets in each heart and mind. Jay's progress is charted with both humour and compassion. He has been through so much. MQ Barber writes beautifully and with so much insight into the human condition. This is a series I love and this book with its focus on love, healing and the future is wonderful. 💖💖💖💖💖
I've been following this trio for as long as they've been around and MQ Barber has yet to disappoint with their story. The development and growth of each character is done so beautifully that you find your own heart racing with joy and pride at their accomplishments; tears falling with their own pain and emotional growth. As with every one of this trio's stories, I found myself pulled into their world and living it in vivid color. Beautifully written, the descriptions done so well that no detail is missed in the minds eye, and the story pacing as perfect as ever. I absolutely cannot wait for the next installment in their journey.
THIS 7TH BOOK IN THE STORY IS WONDERFUL. MQ BARBER HAS DONE IT AGAIN. THERE'S A LOT HAPPENING IN THIS 7TH BOOK. HENRY, ALICE AND JAY CONTINUE THEIR JOURNEY TOGETHER. THEY'VE COME A LONG WAY, AND THERE'S JUST ONE MORE BOOK TO COME. I HATE THAT IDEA, BUT LOOK FORWARD TO IT IMMENSELY. DEFINITELY NEEDS TO BE READ IN ORDER, BUT YOU WILL LOVE THEIR STORY.
I have been eagerly waiting for Binding Their Hearts (7) to release. The previous book was a massive roller coaster ride and left me wanting some peace for our delightful trio and book seven did not disappoint. I loved how Henry's possessive deep need to claim reared its head, Alice finding her stride, gaining confidence and sweet Jay who did a lot of emotional work seeking freedom. I don't want to give any spoilers but if you haven't read the series, I encourage you to start from the beginning and enjoy all the wonderful twists and turns of love unfolding. Truly, M.Q. Barber hit high notes and I found myself slowing down my reading just so I could savor it for longer. Our trio was deliciously spicy and loveable. I highly recommend!
Returning to Henry, Alice and Jay is like coming home. I laughed, cried, rejoiced, and generally felt like I was sitting down with friends. The best thing I can say, and it sounds silly, is my heart felt so warm while reading. Thank you M.Q. for another wonderful story!
Wow...just wow! MQ has a way of bringing several points of view together seamlessly , while moving the story forward at a satisfyingly swift pace. What a joyous love her characters share, would that we all were so blessed . Would , and have shared my love for the three ever since finding them . Tasteful , sexy, engaging ,and totally unforgettable ...hurray for Henry Jay and Alice!
It was a hard journey, but finally Jay was in a mental state where he could accept therapy, Alice became more confident and Henry showed he was only human too and needed public commitment. They deserved the happy place they created by working together and opening up to friends and family.
This whole series is a perfect example of a menage with realistic concerns, healthy communication and that sometimes three are better than two!
And I didn't think it was possible, but this story made me love Jay even more.
'Binding Their Hearts' is just as enjoyable as the others in this series. It builds on the firm foundation of the relationship between Henry, Alice and Jay and also shows the real life struggles we all deal with in regard to family and work demands. The entire book was a joy to read, especially the wedding (tissues, please). They never stop exploring ways to grow, and I look forward to their next adventure. I need people like these in my life!
I have read all the books in the Neighborly Affections series. This one by far is my favorite. The dynamics in the trio change and evolve so fluidly in this book. Jay deals with his past trauma. Alice transitions into her individual roles without too much trouble. And we get to see a more human Henry. The love Henry has for his lovers is extraordinary. I highly recommend this book and I really hope M.Q. keeps writing the Alice, Jay and Henry story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I am speechless. I've been waiting for this book with bated breath and it delivered spectacularly. I've been this trio since day one and to finally witness their commitment was something that took my breath away.
As a voracious reader I’m thrilled when a sequel keeps the high standard of a series I love. The tale of my favorite thruple continues in M.Q. Barber’s “Binding Their Hearts.” Because the plot moves forward, it’s not for new readers, who I envy. After all, they get to start at the beginning and fall with Henry, Jay and Alice like I have.
Since the last installment was heart-wrenching. I couldn’t wait to tear into the 7th Neighborly Affection novel. Could Ms. Barber continue to hold my attention in an established relationship, and if so, how? Oh, man, oh man, oh woman can she!
There is gentle, persistent tension throughout. Can Jay recover from his family’s abuse? Can Alice fully commit? How will the three handle Jay’s recovery, Henry’s new commissions and Alice’s promotion while house hunting and creating a marriage ceremony worthy of their relationship? Will Henry handle his submissives’ stress, or will he reach a breaking point?
Henry, Jay and Alice remain fully formed personalities, with relatable foibles and strengths, and they always react in a personality-consistent manner, even as they grow and encourage one another to develop. The novel gives them the chance and the challenge to settle into their better selves. Like Alice the engineer, our author has kept track of every detail to develop their personalities while tying up stray plotlines. Like Jay, she makes these individuals vibrant and playful. And like Henry, her artistry brings them into balance, again and again. Each novel is a mini-miracle to me.
I also look forward to an education in each new edition, whether facts about art or engineering. And this time, even a new word, “Polycule” meaning a poyamorous arrangement.
But the best part? Not just the emotional wisdom of the plot and personalities, though they are brilliant. No, it’s Ms. Barber’s choice of moments which showcase love, conflict and healing, plus the simple clear language she uses to convey these complicated concepts. Here’s an example.
Jay enters therapy thinking, “the therapist would drill into him and clean off all the gunk until he was shiny and new.” Except, “He hadn’t said the rules for the room or anything, gave no hints about how Jay should act or who he should be.” Until, much later “the ‘pick me’ voice in his head bedded down like a bar cat in straw, all cozy and stretching.” Jay is finally okay accepting love because he’s learned how to give it to himself.
“Binding Their Hearts” allows its characters to fight for and achieve their personal goals. And in doing so, M.Q Barber sated every hunger I have as a reader. Let’s see. Absorbing storyline? Check. Fascinating characters who deepen and thrive? Check. Scintillating interactions? Check. Picturesque language? Check. People I want to meet, know and follow into old age? ABSOLUTELY. Thank you for sharing your virtuosity, Ms. Barber.
Binding Their Hearts: Neighborly Affections by M.Q. Barber is the 7th full length installment in the continued saga of Henry, Alice, and Jay. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC to read and review. To be honest, I didn’t want to start this book. Not because I thought it would be bad or that I wouldn’t like it but the complete opposite. I knew that when I started this book, I would ultimately finish it and then I would have to wait a year for more Henry, Alice, and Jay! Don’t let that stop you! Read the book! This book is a beautiful continuation of the unique relationship between these individuals. We pick up where book 6 left off (if you haven’t read it, go buy it!) There was A LOT of action in the last book. Without resorting to spoilers, those that read it know there were moments when we wanted to throat punch certain characters and there were devastating and heartbreaking moments followed by exuberant moments. This book picks up after that. This book gives more of the characters than we have seen before. With Alice, we are given more of her uncertainty, her stress, but also her growth in her position in work and in life. With Henry we see some vulnerability. Not something we usually contribute to this dominant man. We also see him able to adjust and to give and take what he knows his partners need. I adore Henry and Alice and I love their journey, but I felt like this book was Jay’s. There is no obvious favoritism by the author to this character and Jay doesn’t have more “book time” so to speak. What I mean is that the incredible growth we see in Jay throughout the book. We see Jay finally realize who he is. He discovers who and what is important to him, and he finds his voice. His growth as a character is an amazing transformation! I love the progression of the overall relationship between the 3. This book isn’t full of just bedroom antics (although those are spicy!) This is a relationship moving forward and growing. I highly recommend this entire series and this book! Even though the next book is set to be the final full length one, I hope we can persuade the author to continue with the characters we have grown to love and have more of them in the future!
This is a book you read with your heart and your soul every bit as much as with your eyes and your mind. Everything about this book is intense. It’s intensely emotional, intensely relatable, intensely passionate, intensely moving, and intensely satisfying. If you’ve read the previous books in this incredible Neighborly Affection series (and if not, you should really get on that because they’re all beyond phenomenal), then this book will be a balm to your very soul. These characters have come so far and gone through so much to get to this place—a place of love, belonging, and contentment. Henry, Alice, and Jay are truly representative of all of us, forever striving for that feeling of rightness within ourselves and our relationships. And with a little luck, a fair bit of work, and a lot of love and support, we can achieve it. This story completely embodies the meaning of “love wins.” With the alternating character POVs, we get so much insight into these characters—their hopes, their dreams, their worries, their triumphs, and their tribulations. It’s no secret that Jay is my number one book boyfriend, and this book just further solidified his status. In the last book, I had the overwhelming urge to hug him. And in this book, I had the overwhelming urge to stand up and cheer for him (and ok, maybe still hug him). This book was just what my poor, battered heart needed. If you’re a fan of romance, you owe it to yourself to read this. I truly cannot recommend it highly enough!
Binding Their Hearts is the penultimate novel in the Neighborly Affection series, and I can't quite believe we're coming so close to the end of Henry, Jay, and Alice's story! I've been following these three from the moment I "met" them back in 2015. With each new installment to their story, the more emotionally invested I became. The combination of M.Q. Barber's writing and the tale she was weaving about her main characters had me coming back for more each and every time.
This seventh novel takes place not so long after the events in the sixth one. There is no denying how committed Henry, Jay, and Alice are to each other, but there are challenges that still need to be overcome or, at the very least, managed. I continue to love seeing such growth and development in these three, each one knowing that while love, trust, and respect are all a given, the relationship they have is one that needs as much care as it does work, and none of them take any of it for granted.
If you've yet to meet Henry, Jay, and Alice, I highly recommend you read the Neighborly Affection series in order. With the eighth and final (gasp!) novel coming next year, this is as good as any to see what you've been missing. I'm already getting all those bittersweet feels and the last book hasn't even come out yet! But that's what happens when you became as attached as I am to these three. I love that they continue to learn so much about each other, themselves, and how they are together. Five stars.
I'm so pleased to again be an advanced reader of the latest novel in the Neighborly Affection series. Like all the books in the series before it, M.Q. Barber delivers an engaging story with realistic characters, with no shortage of spicy scenes.
I won't lie, the last book in this series was emotional for me and left some lingering anger at the injustice. I'm so glad that Henry and Alice have Jay's back as he moves into a more actualized version of himself, supported by real family. The healthy way that M.Q. Barber portrays moving to a healing family dynamic is so encouraging; where Henry as his dominant still gives Jay license to share only what he wants as he's ready reinforces the healthy situation he's in.
To be sure, there's still a lot of passion, and hot sex, with the added layer of the trio's bonds being ever more strengthened together. Alice's continuing to find her feet in her switch role and exploring her desires, Henry taking the steps he needs to to support both his partners' dreams and varying needs is an exquisite balance that is a joy to watch. Add in the real life external pressures that can come up for everyone; well the dance is intricate but ultimately satisfying to witness.
I highly recommend this series, and this book is a masterful example of erotica done right.
Important Note: Binding Their Hearts is book 7 in the Neighborly Affection series. If you haven’t read them yet, do yourself a favor and go check out Playing the Game, book 1, as the series really should be read in order.
I received an ARC copy of the book with the agreement I would leave an honest review.
The Neighborly Affection series has always had a lot of heart, but Binding Their Hearts really takes it to 11. The book feels like a natural continuation of where things left off. It really challenges our trio to move beyond what they’ve known, so they can reach new heights, and all the happiness they deserve.
At times the book felt a little scattered and unfocused, but it’s because the trio themselves are feeling pulled in so many different directions. M. Q. Barber is a fantastic writer who always has you right there with the characters, feeling what they are and sharing their challenges and their triumphs.
There is a lot going on in this book, but sometimes life gets jam packed, and seeing these characters who have already come so far navigate the chaos just shows that they have what it takes to make their unconventional life work in the long run.
If you’ve enjoyed the series to date, you’ll love this book. And if you haven’t started the series yet, definitely check out book 1!
Wow, Binding Their Hearts may be my favorite book in the series so far. It’s amazing to see how much our trio has grown and learned from each other in this latest installment of their story. As always, MQ Barber’s prose is eloquent, lyrical, humorous, poignant, and beautiful. I love Henry, Alice, and Jay as if they were my own friends and it feels so special to see our trio get to experience growth, soul-healing love, and peace. Of course, there are growing pains along the way, but watching them learn to lean on each other and guide each other is what makes reading this series so rewarding. I think one of the most engaging aspects of reading this series is how the reader is able to really feel connected to the mindset of each member of the relationship and see what makes them tick. I feel like this book was particularly enlightening into Henry and Jay’s thoughts. I loved getting to watch Henry’s decision making process as a Dominant and listening to Jay’s progress with his therapist. All in all, I can honestly say that, to me this book was perfect. This series is perfect. And of course our beloved trio is perfectly imperfect. That’s what makes them so lovable. 🥰
I love this series. I always try to slowly read the latest books in my favorite series because I don't want them to end. This latest book did not disappoint. Although it was long, I didn't want it to end. I love to escape into romances, I'm a mental health professional and appreciate a good HEA. If you haven't read any of Barber's books in the Neighborly Affection series you are in for a treat. You definitely ought to start with the first book. I often equate romances to different desserts. Some are a sorbet, light and refreshing. Others are rich with depth and ought to be savored. Binding Their Hearts is a delicious souffle. We had to wait for it, but was it worth it. I have loved the character development of Alice, Jay and Henry thoughout each book. They have felt real to me, their challenges and set backs realistic. Growth does not happen within 300 pages, at least not realistic and lasting change. I can't wait for the next (and sadly) last book in this series.
I Love, Love, Loved this book. You absolutely have to read MQ Barber's other books to enjoy this one, but it's 100% worth the commitment. Alice, Henry and Jay are steadily building their happily ever after. Jay has been my least favorite character--he always struck me as an uncomfortable combination of an 8-year-old boy's mentality in a 22-year-old exotic dancer's body. But in this book, he finally got therapy, learned he has value, accepted that his entirely family's messed up dynamics was not his fault and he now accepts his family and his lifestyle like a man. The best part, though, was seeing the absolute, deep-down- to- his- soul love that Henry has for Alice and Jay. The end of the book was so touching and loving and satisfying, I'll need to read it again and again. Thanks, MQ, for creating such a loving world with such diverse characters that each struggled with needs and fears, and nonetheless came together to create a perfect triangle. Chef's kiss!
