“Every day is a great day! I have my faith, my family, and live in the finest country in the world.” There may be no greater words than the above to sum up the unflappable optimism, gratitude, and hope that has guided Major General James Mukoyama throughout his life's journey. They not only embody a personal mantra, they stand as a mindset—a north star—for anyone hoping to seize upon the American Dream. General Mukoyama's story, at its heart, is a love letter to the most generous nation on Earth—a beacon, a manifesto to remind us all that through hard work, dedication and an allegiance to something greater than oneself... anything and everything is possible.
“An extraordinary all-American journey, his life is an enduring reflection of selfless service, patriotism, leadership, and faith." — Colonel Patricia S. Klop, U.S. Marine Corps
"This captivating memoir intricately weaves together personal experiences and timeless lessons, creating a narrative that is both candid and profound. Mukoyama’s exploration of faith, family, patriotism, and purpose resonates deeply as he shares poignant encounters that shaped his path." —Brigadier General Stephen K. Curda, U.S.Army-Retired, PhD, Special Advisor to the President on Veterans Affairs, National Louis University
America is blessed to have men of the writer's caliber in its ranks. There is a typo on page 270. Learned about the author and his autobiography on the Dennis Prager talk radio program.
"Peace is not the absence of war but rather the absence of fear." - pp. 224
I do not think I have ever read a more truly joyful memoir. This book is, like the general himself, inspirational. The work reads as though he is speaking directly to the reader, kindly encouraging and thoughtfully edifying.
This book records a life very well lived, and is diverse in its presentation of not just a military career, but everything from family life practicalities to forming unique, often-international relationships to arrive at common goals.
I cannot recommend this book higher as it has been a joy to read each time I picked it up. The appendices are excellent supplements as well. Specifically on the topic of family, I believe I'll take inspiration from a couple of the offerings found in the back of this book.
In sum, this book does exactly what the title suggests, present the most important values of the titular American samurai: faith, family, and flag. If you have interest in any of the three, this will be a truly great read.
