In today’s busy world wherein people have been continuously neglecting their health and proper diet, “The Power of Self Care: Transforming Heart Health with Lifestyle Medicine” by Dr. Sunil Kumar is an eye opener for every human out there on how simple care by us can make us lead a healthy life style saving us and our lived ones from the health scare. The author has emphasised basically on heart health and how small initiative by us can lead to a good and healthy heart thus by increasing the life span of a person.

Dr. Sunil Kumar has explained in brief the need of physical exercises, meditation, diet, sleep and self care practices to lead a healthy lifestyle. For example the author has mentioned how a 30 mins walk for 4 weeks being the target can change your body rather than rigorous physical workouts.

Also the author has very nicely explained the nutritional value of various superfoods which needs to be included in our daily food which acts as supporting booster for our heart health. Dr. Sunil Kumar has also briefly described the need of meditation, stress busters and the need to maintain good relationships with our loved ones and fellow beings to live a good life encouraging a healthy heart. Also he has emphasised on how sleep is one of the key factors for a good heart functioning and to live a good life.

Right book at the right time! That’s what I feel about this book!

Self-care, a term taken for granted or sometimes considered a luxury but is loving and caring for your body, mind and soul luxury?

We are constantly working to better ourselves but do we really pause and look back whether the things we worked for is making us happy?

This book will tell us exactly what we are missing out and what we things do we need to adapt for a healthy lifestyle and loving ourselves.

The book is a guide for healthy lifestyle transformation with basic steps that navigates through different aspects of self-care practices for healthy heart, self-care plan, physical activities.

The author has mindfully explained the power of self-care right from understanding its positive impact, connection between lifestyle choices and heart diseases to real life inspirational examples.

The author has clears the aspects of not following a healthy lifestyle leading to heart problems and stress.

While the author first explains the problems and how they arise and affect, he also later explains the solutions for the same.

Self care is much more deep and important than we think it to be. We’ve been through days where we don’t want to just move, nothing motivates us to get out of the bed, but we don’t actually know that how our mental health affects us to the core.


Mental well-being and self satisfaction has equal impact as physical health has on us. With growing awareness, I believe that soon, more and more acceptance will be given to it.

Coming to the book, reading it gave me a few realizations which supports what I’ve mentioned earlier, that how our daily activities are impacted by our self acceptance and feeling complete within ourselves. Many of us need to learn to manage our emotions, our reactions, learn to respond and more importantly feel better within and feel more content.

Focusing on one aspect won’t help overall growth, and that’s what this book highlights hence a co-ordination of physical exertion, our intakes, interactions with the society everything goes hand in hand with what we’re seeking to become mentally fit.

I had read somewhere, how much ever we work hard to get physically fit, we never be completely fit if we don’t work on our emotions and that’s what led me to know more about emotions.


The challenge available in the book at the end is really challenging and, self care is of utmost importance and a journey which is completely different for everyone else. We can’t compare the progress, the things which makes us happy but such books stand as a base for everyone to find their right path of self satisfaction and inner peace.

As the title suggests this was a general guide for heart health by doing self-care, it includes our daily lifestyle. By making small changes to our routine we could be able to lead a healthy life. This book details all the minimal precautions and suggestions one should know to have a healthy heart. Our heart is one of the main parts of our body. Our entire body system is related to it. Directly or indirectly our habits affect it, which includes our physical activeness, eating habits, sleep cycle and diet plan. I highly recommend this book to all readers or Non-readers, One must read this book. This book is a guide which should be re-read. I have highlighted a lot of points. After seeing the book Cover I was expecting this book based on medical details but it was easy to read and it helps readers to do self-care to lead a healthy life. The Major points discussed in the book were related to diet plan, sleep cycle, type of exercises, physical activity and impact of lifestyle on heart health. Do check the blurb and surely get a copy for yourself. I will re-read this book at regular intervals of the time. By the end of this book, a self-care plan for heart health, Physical Activity prescription, Heart-healthy recipes and a 10-week self-care plan were given for a better understanding of the book.

We often care too much about others that at times we forget to take care of ourselves. I'm glad to read this book which showed me the importance of self care! I'm very sure that our perspective about self care and staying healthy would have a positive impact once we complete reading the book!

I was least bothered about my heart health until I read the info regarding the connection between lifestyle and heart disease in this book ! I clearly understood that physical exercise and right food/nutrient choice could make a whole lot of difference! The 10 week self care plan given at the end of the book is quite helpful with practical implementation of the theoretical knowledge we got through the book !

The author's way of explaining things was simple and easily understandable! I loved reading this impactful and insightful read ! I would strongly recommend it to others as well!
