American Colonel Jake Burnes has a new postwar assignment: to rescue two rocket scientists in occupied Germany. But an infiltration of Russian spies could foil Jake's mission in Berlin Encounter, a novel by author T. Davis Bunn.

On I've rolled with this fourth book in the Rendezvous with Destiny series. Indeed, I not only rolled but basically flew through it.

It's both interesting and pretty heartbreaking, still, to see the dire and precarious aftermath of a world war. Refugees. Hyperinflation. Poverty. The threat of the Nazis now past but Stalin and the Soviets looming like an ominous cloud.

It's good to see that Jake still has room for inner growth as a protagonist, but he's not just facing the same problem time and again, as if he "gets over" something in one book, and then he's totally back to square one in the next. The (continuing) thread of romance is relatively minor but strong here, and though I missed Jake's sidekick, Pierre, for much of the book, it was satisfying to see him eventually appear--and to know he will appear again.

I found the climax of this story to be fairly tame, but that's better than a contrived heightening or overstretching of drama would've been. And, goodness, Churchill's historic declaration about "an iron curtain," along with the last disclosure of this novel, is quite an intriguing setup for the fifth and final book in the series.

Christian Audiobook--good Christian spy novel set in Berlin just before the Berlin airlift. This is a stand-alone novel in a series.

Colonel Jake Burnes had never imagined himself a spy, but the acclaim he garnered for rescuing a French resistance hero and bringing a traitor to justice led to a more clandestine assignment. Now he must venture into the sector of Germany held by the Red Army and secure the safe passage of two rocket scientists to the West. NATO intelligence assures him that nothing less than the balance of power in the post-war world is at stake. But Jake is unaware that Russian spies have infiltrated this elite group, jeopardizing his mission and life.

Still in the pleasure of being a newlywed, his wife Sally learns of the danger and rushes to warn Jake. But just as they are about to flee from Berlin with the scientists, Stalin's stranglehold around the city tightens even further. Now they must escape the notorious Berlin Blockade, or face certain death on charges of espionage!

This fourth book in Bunn's "Rendezvous with Destiny" series has Americans Jake and Sally Burnes staying in the thick of post-war Europe—specifically eastern Germany as the Soviets come barreling in to grab up as much of the defeated Reich's wealth and land as they can.

These Russians want ALL of Berlin and beyond, so German-speaking Jake is assigned to go deep undercover into east Germany, to bring out two Nazi rocket scientists whom the U.S. wants to acquire before the Soviets do. But the Soviets are closing their net around Berlin and points east, so Jake is soon on the run, with one of the German scientists holding him back in every way possible.

Meanwhile, Sally learns the OSS has sent her new husband into the ever-darkening Soviet territory, so she decides she must sneak her way there as well, in hopes her State Department experience can help her and Jake both. It's a rip-roaring tale of twists, turmoil, and profound love!

A great journey

I loved this story for its spiritual truths delivered to those needing it, while the political powers fought and crushed innocent people. It is an amazing tale of good people going through tumultuous times.

This series keeps getting better and better! While I still think I like the character development in Sahara Crosswinds the best, this book will appeal to those who like a bit more action and less introspection. Contrasting vast rebuilding efforts in the British, French, and American sectors, Russian controlled East Berlin seems stuck in poverty and despair as much as they did at the close of the war. Catching the rest of the world unaware, Stalin makes moves to loot Berlin and drop the iron curtain and boggle the minds of NATO still in its infant stages.Intregue, twists, and danger abound. Throughout the novel we see a recurring theme of forgiveness. The war is over. Can Jake risk his own life to save a man with the face of his enemy--the same kind of man who cut down his brother? These books continue to do a great job of capturing the minds of the allies underestimating the rise of a new despot couched behind friendly words of brotherhood.

2014 A fast read, and of interest as we had just left Berlin. Wondering about some of the historical details though...facts or a bit of the fiction?
2025 I am working my way through the series again as all 5 are available on Hoopla. Not a stand-alone but pleasant enough, w/ some fun characters, bits of history, and a fairy tale ending, despite some questionable actions! The author chooses to be a bit sparse w/ details at times, about how & why things occur. Oh well...on to Book 5.

"Berlin Encounter" is the 4th book in Davis Bunn's "Rendezvous with Destiny" series. I enjoyed this book very much and can give it my recommendation. I look forward to continuing the series.
