After decades of being missing-in-action, Vampire Lord Kobreon is in the limelight again. The competition is stiff to earn a place at his side. It’s only a matter of time before someone ends up owning a majority stake at the heart of the deal.
She studied his history—collected his memorabilia—worshipped him from afar. If only fate’s favourable gaze would shine on her this one time...
The odds are stacked against her. Instead of fangs and claws, she has soft fuzz; replacing strength and agility are waddles and paddles. No one wants to talk to a failed shifter, let alone date one.
Can the only duckling on the water stay afloat, or will her dreams of love sink her forever?
Chances for eternal love don’t come around often. She’s praying this opportunity will turn out Just Ducky.

"Hmmmmmm, Who am I?…Who am I? Silence…chews pencil… Who am I?…Who am I? Hmmmmmm, I am… a daydreamer…a hopeless romantic…an optimistic pessimist…a psychic…a childish adult…an animal lover…an over-emotional wreck…an adventurer…an artistic fool… Aha! I am…A Fiction Writer! Nice to meet you!"
About the author!
I was diagnosed with clinical depression after the loss of my mother, father and husband within three years of each other; all to cancer. 24/7 in-home care, coupled with the loss I felt, left its mark on my psyche.
Depression takes up a lot of my life. Reading and writing are the only things I have found that help (in connection with regular medication), even if only for a short time. To escape to a different world can make a big difference in my mood in real time.
To put things in perspective, when I was at my lowest point, I couldn't open mail, talk on the phone, or even drive to the store. Walls of sadness surrounded me. As they closed in, tears would fall. There didn't need to be a reason or trigger.
People ask me why I started writing. My answer is simple: I wanted to create a world into which other people with similar problems could escape. I wanted to share the one place that had helped me for many years.
I have always said that as long as one person finds a little bit of happiness out of my books, I am, in my opinion, an accomplished author. The same is true for every writer out there. Please don't ever let anyone tell you different.
I read books as well as write them and have visited the worlds many different authors have created. Those worlds not only make me feel better, but give me the strength to face real life again. I want to thank everyone who writes - I want them to know they are making a difference.
This book is a human/fantasy story. The humans and the paranormal have been at war for as long as they can think back until a line is drawn and violence stops. With the treat hanging in the balance can a cure be found to prevent more violence in the future?
It's a really cute paranormal YA. I enjoyed it. I would recommend this for teens and preteen readers as a nice sized chapter book that doesn't have inappropriate situations. There are situations that are relatable such as bullying for being different.
Ducky has had a life of ridicule as a duck shifter, especially when she gets anxious she she shifts to a furry duckling. Hearing that Vampire Lord Kobreon is on his way, Ducky just wants a glimpse. Everything goes awry though when she gets hurt and is rescued only to find herself a constant companion to Kobreon, the only problem is it's as a duck.
This was fun, was not sure what would happen to Ducky. Full of different types of shifters and very different then the other books I have read of this genre. Entertaining.
Ducky is an outcast. Her whole town is filled with shifters. Wolf shifters, feline shifters, not to mention the vampire family that rules over the town. Meanwhile Ducky is a duckling shifter. One that can’t control her shifts either. She is ridiculed and made fun of all the time.
When word gets out that the Vampire Lord Kobreon is possibly looking for his potential bride, all the women line up to meet him. Even Ducky wants to meet him. She knows that it is impossible that she will be the one chosen but wants to at least catch a glimpse of the mystery man. Hiding in a bush she ends up pricking herself and making a sound, when a woman starts towards the bush, Ducky panics and transforms. The woman scoops her up and brings her into the castle out of harm's way. Kobreon sees the duckling and instantly takes a liking to her wanting to keep her as a companion. She has to stay in the castle longer than intended under the guise of being just a duckling.
The treaty between humans and shifters is on the brink of shattering due to the human princess being poisoned. The humans are blaming the shifters and demand a culprit and a cure or else war will be imminent. It’s up to Kobreon to find a cure to make sure his people are safe. Especially Ducky.
I thought this was a cute story. At first I wasn’t sure about it because the premise of a duckling and a vampire kind of sounded weird to me. Who would have feelings for a duckling?! Instead you get a platonic relationship between the two for the most part. Ducky feels like a failure and needs to learn how to properly control herself. She has no confidence. She works to find herself outside of being just a ducky. Kobreon has the weight of the world on his shoulders but no one to share the weight with. Just having Ducky around has helped give him hope. They both have their problems and at the end of the day they can cuddle up and relax.
So far, I have read quite a few of C.A. King's books and loved them! This also falls in that category. The author has a way of writing about something unique and out there making it so you never have a dull moment reading their books!
Just Ducky is the first book in the Weird Shifters series by C.A King. It is a superb, very original, and cleverly crafted paranormal romance. There is a bit of a fairytale-esque feel to the story, as well as a ‘quest’ component- which means plenty of action, adventure, danger, and high stakes. This shifter romance had me intrigued from the moment I laid eyes on the title, and then the blurb only fired my curiosity even more- so I was excited to dive in as soon as it hit my Kindle. With unusual shifters, as well as vampires, wolves, agendas, an opposites attract element, forced proximity, magic, fate, humour, banter, mystery, tension, intrigue, suspense, the threat of war, and time running out- made this an entirely engrossing read. Ducky has felt like a ‘duck out of water’, excluded and made fun of- and treated like an outcast for her whole life. But when she discovers that the shifter of her dreams may be on the look out for a bride, Ducky can’t help but watch longingly from the ‘sidelines’. But then fate thrusts her into a situation that brings her up close and personal with her heart’s desire- only he doesn’t realise ‘who’ she is. With the threat of war on the doorstep, Ducky would love to be able to help find a solution to the problem- but what can she, a little duckling, possibly be able to do? And what happens when her secrets are revealed? If you love paranormal stories, sweet romance, adventure, and a fairytale feel, then you will definitely want to get your hands on a copy of this book. Another great read from Ms. King’s seemingly limitless imagination. Looking forward to ‘Happy Hump Day’ (Book #2). Happy Reading…
I’m such a fan of C.A. King and their lovely paranormal YA books. This particular book grabbed my attention with its adorable cover art. Who doesn’t adore a sweet little yellow floof!? I simply had to know how this shifter story would go, so I jumped right in and was not disappointed.
I really enjoyed Ducky’s character and sort of related to her with the anxiety struggle that initially she did not have a good sense of control over, leading to a number of embarrassing situations. Of course, bullying from others around her ensued.
One thing that I can say without hesitation is that the author clearly has a gift of keeping the reader enthralled with the different plot twists, characters and levels of paranormal figures. I could not put this book down. I found myself excited to see what was next and continuously telling myself that I needed to read just one more chapter before bed.
I found myself laughing out loud throughout the book because of the witty back and forth and even some of the character names that were quite clever. For instance, I almost fell over when I first read about the character calling himself, Drak Ula. Who would have guessed he was not a fan of garlic! Don’t worry, this isn’t something that will give any plot twists away.
I think fans of the paranormal, YA books, and great storytelling will really enjoy this book. It is quite interesting, a page turner and refreshing take on this genre. The fight between human and the supernatural, good vs what is perceived as evil, is always a good foundation for a fantastic story. This book did not disappoint.
This is the first book in the Weird Shifter series. I have always enjoyed this authors work and when I saw this I didn't hesitate to read it. I love paranormal romances and this has that as well as danger, suspense, adventure and high stakes.
Ducky (just as her name suggest) is a duckling shifter. To everyone around her she's an embarrassment and is constantly bullied and teased. After all what good is she as a shifter if she has no abilities? When she hears that Vampire Lord Kobreon has returned looking for his mate she can't wait to see him. She knows she has no chance as his mate but she needs to just see him from afar. However fate has other ideas and when she is taken inside the castle in her duckling form she gets closer to him than she ever imagine possible.
Vampire Lord Kobreon has a lot of his plate. With a war on the brink of breaking out between the supernatural and humans he has his plate full trying to find a cure for the kings daughter. The last thing he needs is to worry about finding a mate. When a little duckling turns up in his life he finds a companion he never knew he wanted or needed. But how will he respond when he realises that Ducky is much more than a little duckling. Can Lord Kobreon find the cure to save the kings daughter and prevent a war from starting? Is there any way Ducky can help, or is she just a useless little duck? This is a captivating story and I loved every part of it.
Just Ducky is Book 1 of the Weird Shifters series and when I saw the cover I was already intrigued. Never read a duckling shifter story until now and I love the uniqueness of this storyline. Drama, intrigue, shifters, royalty and greed...I really enjoyed this book.
There is a rift between Vampire Lord Kobreon and King Hammerhead as King Hammerhead's daughter is gravely ill and Kobreon is trying to find a cure so there is peace between them. Ducky is just trying to survive each day, being a unique shifter that does not get much respect from others. Intrigue draws Ducky to Kobreon's castle, his mother takes Ducky in her duckling form. Kobreon is attached to this duckling for some reason, but is tasked as time is running out to find a cure for King Hammerhead's daughter. Will Lord Kobreon be able to save the day and find a peaceful treaty between him and King Hammerhead? When Ducky has her true calling will she get the respect she deserves and also to Lord Kobreon's heart?
This is a fun paranormal read not to be missed! Already looking forward to book 2.
Just Ducky is the first book in the Weird Shifters series. I read a lot of books with characters who are shifters so it’s fun to come across something a bit different and I’m looking forward to reading more of this series! I’ve enjoyed other books by this author, particularly The Portal Prophecies series, so knew I could expect unconventional fantasy in a well developed world.
Ducky is a duckling shifter who is constantly looked down on other, seemingly more useful shifters. She’s presented with a world where she doesn’t seem to have a lot to offer and is constantly getting into embarrassing or dangerous situations. Ducky has a lot to learn about herself as she seeks to learn to control her powers and find her place in the world.
I particularly enjoyed getting to explore a variety of settings on Lord Kobreon’s travels. I’m looking forward to seeing more of this fantasy world in Happy Hump Day!
This book gets four stars from me. I’d recommend it to fans of shifter fantasy who are interested in characters who can shift into less conventional animals.
Just Ducky (Weird Shifters Series) by C.A. King. This is a great Young adult fantasy read. Its the story of Ducky who has the horrible fate of turning into a furry duck when she is nervous. Hiding in the bushes she pricks herself and makes a noise causing a lady to come towards her and she nervously shifts into a duckling. Scooping her up and taking her in the castle the Lord takes a shine to her and wants her by him at all times only as a duckling. The humans and shifters are almost at War and Lord Kobreon is the only one who can fix it. Will Ducky be able to escape the Castle and will Lord Kobreon be able to save the shifters and humans. Read this young adult novel to find out!
4.5 stars Don’t let the cover fool you. This paranormal fantasyish tale is original and intriguing. It has a Cinderella feel with a twist to it. C.A. is known for writing a variety of genres and why enjoy them. You never know what you are going to get. I have said it before and am saying it again C.A. King never fails to deliver great works for her readers. She is one of my favourite authors. I love her unique and eclectic writing skills and the array of unusual worlds and characters that she creates. Ever wonder where the name Vampire came from? There is a definite line between humans and paranormals if only they could get along. A treaty is to be signed but will it be upheld? She has always been looked down on as lesser than the fiercest, the bravest and the strongest yet she may just win his heart. This imaginative and creative short story is one not to be missed for paranormal lovers.
Ducky is a shifter that lives in the kingdom of shifters under the rule of Lord Kobreon, a vampire by humans naming. Kobreon is set to keep peace between all the kingdoms as he does not want a war between kingdoms. However in his travels it is rumored that he is looking for a bride and that is why he is coming home. This is when Ducky decides she wants to try and get at least a peek at him even though she feels he would want nothing to do with her. Ducky is a duck shifter and according to everyone has no qualities of a good shifter. On her trip to the castle she gets anxious that she will be seen and accidentally shifts into her duck form and is saved and taken into the castle, where Kobreon and his mother begin to fall for this duckling shifter. However she is only known as a shifter to his mother, Kobreon does not yet know. Will Kobreon be able to prevent the war and will he be able to keep his beloved duckling?
I love the writing style and imagination of this author. The cover and title immediately pulled me in. When I learned it was a supernatural story, I was even more excited to read. I have read many MANY supernatural stories but this is like no other that I have read before. The characters are well written and interesting. A duck shifter? The first for me for sure. Ducky is someone that I feel many can relate to in a way. Obviously not in the supernatural element, but in the way that she has been bullied and mistreated her whole life. She is an outcast and a loner. She doesn't fit in with the others. She is in love with the Lord but believes he would never be interested in her. The Lord is back to prevent war and rumor is he is looking for a bride. Ducky believes it could never be her but she wants to take a peek anyway. This was a fun read and I am looking forward to future books in the series.
Just Ducky is the first book in the Weird Shifters series. After reading this book, I look forward to more in this series. The borders of the paranormals and humans are at risk of colliding and going to war, and the paranormals are out in force since the return of Lord Kobreon. In all of this, we meet Ducky. She is a duck shifter who is teased and mistreated. What happens when Lord Kobreon runs into this cute, fluffy ducky? I enjoyed the world-building and characters of this story. The book is the perfect length, allowing the story and characters to develop. I was intrigued by Ducky and how she doesn't fit the normal shifter story. I enjoyed her tenacity despite her circumstances while still being vulnerable to her character. Also, Lord Kobreon was interesting, and I enjoyed that he was a contrast to Ducky. I always enjoy books by this author, and this was no exception. I look forward to reading the next book in this series and to reading more from this author.
When I first read the synopsis for Just Ducky, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But, C. A. King is an author that I won't hesitate to read so I dove right in. What an unexpected, well-written, original, shifter romance. There is drama, adventure, and a bit of motherly intuition and meddling. Ducky (aptly named due to her fuzzy, two-legged, web-footed alter ego) finds herself in the midst of conflict between humans and shifters. This is where she meets Lord Kobreon and his mother, Trishia. C. A. King’s characters are so interesting, entertaining, and unique! The world building in this book is great. I could see the opulence of the human kingdom, feel the greed of the human general, and the connection between Ducky and Kobreon. Overall, a quick, entertaining read that I would recommend for anyone who enjoys a touch of the peculiar.
I will admit, the title is what grabbed me at first. A duck shifter?! I've read plenty of shifter stories, and some mentioned that all animals could be shifters. I was very intrigued by the cover and the title. I'm glad I gave it a chance! I had a few good laughs, and a few meddling mother moments that made me laugh. While I absolutely loved the MC's, Trisha was far by my favorite. She reminded me of my best friend's mom who liked to meddle. I found it absolutely adorable that Kobreon called Ducky his emotional support duck. This story is for sure a change of pace from your typical shifter/vampire stories. I'm really glad that I read this book! C.A never fails to disappoint me. She does such a good job with building her worlds, and the story-telling is out of this world. I can't wait to read more in the weird shifter series!
This book is starts off with an introduction between two groups of people, the humans and the shifters. The vampire prince has met with the human king and peace is established between the two groups ending a brutal war. Moving forward we find that our shifter kingdom is in trouble. It has been suspected that someone from the shifter side has poisoned the human princess and if the vampire prince can’t find the solution to cure her, war. In the midst of all this is an adorable little duckling named Ducky who becomes the prince’s emotional support duck but Ducky knows something the prince doesn’t, Ducky is a shifter female that has been in love with the prince her whole life. Candace she find a way to save her prince? Will a new war bring about more death and destruction? This was a great read!
I swear if you want to read some out of the box unique paranormal books C.A. king is the author to read. This is not the first book I have read by this author and I knew when I saw the cover I just had to pick it up. I just knew I'd be in for a crazy wonderful ride and I was right this book was filled with you know the usual vampires, wolves, etc., but also the not so usual never seen before shifters (at least in none of the books I've ever read). It also has action, adventure, danger, romance, forced proximity and fantasy. This is the second book of the Weird Shifters Series. The first being Happy Hump Day which I know have to go read 🥰 I can't wait to read more of the authors work. If you haven't Already read it, get it now. I mean have you ever read a book about a DUCK Shifter, probably not. 🥰 you won't regret It.
Just Ducky (Weird Shifter Series) by C.A. King 4 Stars
I love this author’s books. She has a wild imagination and her stories are all unique. This is the first book that I have read about a duck shifter. Who would have thought to write about a duck shifter? C.A. King of course! Ducky doesn’t have claws or fangs. She’s not fast, strong or dangerous. She’s just a duck. She’s been ridiculed and bullied her whole life. She doesn’t have any friends so she keeps to herself and fantasizes about Lord Kobreon and having her fairytale ending.
There is tension between the humans and shifters which can cause a war. This adds some action and intrigue to the story. There is a nice twist towards the end. Overall it reminded me of a mashup between the Ugly Duckling, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty but with a whole new twist.
This book is by an author that I never hesitate to pick up. Her stories are engaging and hard to put down. I enjoy her writing skills and her ability to bring the story to life. This is a shorter book but it sure does pack a punch in the supernatural department. This is a well written story where the border between supernatural and human is at risk for war. It all depends on a princess waking up. Meanwhile Lord Kobreon has a line of females wanting to be by his side. What happens with these two you don’t want to miss. There is great growth throughout the characters and the plot which made the story easy to read. This is an entertaining story that is a must read. One you don’t want to miss for sure. I enjoyed reading this book. I highly recommend it.
Just Ducky by CA King is a part of the Weird Shifters series. I must admit I truly chose the book because I couldn’t stop laughing at the title and was curious if the shifters were… well ducks obviously! I have enjoyed other books by C.A. King so I was sure that even if it were odd, I’d likely not be disappointed. And while I don’t want to spoil any of the story, I will say I was definitely not disappointed. The story was an easy read with real charm and adventure. With a war between humans and supernatural becoming increasingly likely, the MCs find themselves in a very odd place. I’d definitely suggest giving this story a chance. Especially if you particularly like this author and paranormal. It was enjoyable to have a story that wasn’t just vampires and werewolves.
C.A. King has done it again. She has created an interesting, gripping and completely unique story that had me absolutely hooked right from the word go. I never fail to be impressed by her books and will buy them without reading the description as I know that whatever I get will be worth it. And proof of that can be found in this book. The story is captivating. From the minute I started reading I knew this was going to be one I could not put down. I loved the characters instantly. I wanted to know more about them and wanted to see how they would continue to interconnect. The story was interesting and really matched the characters it was about. This author really does know how to write incredible books and I cannot wait to read anything else she has to offer.
This book was another sweet, hilarious, original story from the author. As a fan of their writing, I was delighted by the cover of the book and knew it would be a delightful read and I was not wrong! This is a wonderful paranormal romance with hilarious twists and turns for our heroine Ducky. I absolutely loved all of the word play throughout the story and all of the witty and fun banter. As a fan of fairy tales, I loved that this story had some elements along with the paranormal; the author did a great job of bringing everything together in an original story. If you enjoy YA, paranormal romance, adventure, and humor, you will absolutely love this well written tale about the shifter who has always felt like a duck out of water while loving her crush from afar.
While I have read several books by this author, this one definitely has the cutest cover! It grabbed my attention and made me pick it up right away. Don’t let the cuteness fool you though as it contains plenty of paranormal action and romance within the pages. C.A. King is one of my favorite authors because the way they craft a story is captivating. From the plot to the characters and world-building, everything is accounted for and marvelously woven together. Shifter stories are one of my favorites within the paranormal genre, so this was right up my alley. I read the entire thing in one day because I was unable to put it down! If you enjoy the YA Paranormal genre, this will be the perfect book for you to pick up. I can’t wait to see what is next in the series!
This was a cute fairy=tale like story. It did remind me a little of sleeping beauty but she wasn’t part of the tale. I loved Ducky. Here she was the underdog of the story. When the Lord of the Castle called her his emotional support duck, I was a little worried that nothing would come of that. She overcame the challenges thrown at her, rose like the amazing beauty she is and saved everything. I liked the fact the even though there is a romance with the Lord of the castle, he’s not too big a player It’s more a story of growing into her powers. Oh,I loved seeing Lita get what was due her for her actions. Excellent story. I can’t wait to read more in this series.
Being a duck shifter in the middle of shifters of larger useful animals is like being a carrot in a donut shop. Ducky is an outsider. No friends and lots of enemies. She had been attacked and verbally abused all her life. When the Vampire King comes to meet with people of her town she finds herself brought into the place when she inadvertently changes to a duckling. Someone from the place saves her from being trampled and killed by the mass of people trying to see the King. The king is on a quest that will lead to war if he doesn't complete it. Will war come for the humans and shifters? Read the book and find out. Excited to read book two.
This was an interesting twist to the normal shaft shifters that you read about. This one was about a girl; Ducky could shift to a duck. Ducky feels like an outside, she has no friends and didn’t grow up in the greatest of homes. War for so long with the humans and the paranormal, but is there any way that maybe they can solve this and stop it all? and can Ducky help in anyway, she becomes friends with the prince, but can she save him? This story captivating from the beginning, it was so much in such a short read, well that it felt like. I can’t wait for the next book, the way this one ended don’t skip this book, you’ll want to read them in order.
This is not the first book by this author I have picked up, and it definitely will not be the last. This is, however, the first book in the Weird Shifters series, so thankfully there will be more! For anyone who appreciates paranormal stories, there is a little bit of everything all rolled up in one story. Ducky is a character I found myself rooting for from the beginning. The story is interesting and well-written. This is also the first book I have read that involves shifters, so I was intrigued from the get-go. If you are looking for a cozy, fun, escape-from-reality kind of book, then I highly suggest picking up this book and getting lost in the world of Ducky.
Just Ducky is Book One in the Weird Shifters Series. It is a YA paranormal romance with action, adventure, danger, mystery, suspense, intrigue, shifters, and magic. The story centers around Ducky who has always felt like an outsider that never belonged. She longs to be with the shifter of her dreams, but he does not know who she is, so she watches from afar. Feeling as though she is unable to help in any way, Ducky watches helplessly from the sidelines until war is looming fate and it forces her to make a difficult decision. A brilliant and creative twist on shifters, romance, and fate with a fairytale feeling.
Just Ducky by C.A King is about a world where Supernatural beings and Humans co-exist. During an era of peace and separation between the two. The Vampire Lord (Vampire being used loosely) is on a mission to heal the human princess. If he doesn’t find a cure then war will start. He finds a companion in Ducky after his mother rescues her. Unbeknownst to him Ducky is a shifter.
I thought the story was cute. Basically a remake of the Ugly Ducking with a supernatural twist on it. I like that the shifters and Vampires are not traditional at all. I’m excited for the next book.
Just Ducky is the first book in the Weird Shifter series by C. A. King. The cover art itself really got my attention, as well as the concept of it. Ducky is definitely unique, the first Shifter of her kind that I've ever seen! This author as a whole has become a must read for me, so I didn't hesitate when I saw this book, and as always was enchanted! King's originality and imagination is unmatched, and that includes this series starter. Full of wonderful characters, romance, adventure, and more awaits! Always recommend this author!
