Bye Bye Barry

Previously published as “Barry Sanders … Now You See Him ...” by Barry Sanders. It is updated, expanded and edited with new content.

Why did Barry Sanders, one of the game’s most exciting and explosive running backs, suddenly retire just as he was closing in on the all-time NFL rushing record? In this amazing book, Barry reveals for the first time why he left the game at the height of his career and how he came to make one of the biggest decisions of his life. Known throughout his career as a deeply private man, Barry’s finally ready to tell his story. He begins with growing up in Wichita, Kansas, and his struggles to earn a place on sports teams due to his size. Next comes his Heisman-winning career at Oklahoma State University, where a “too small” running back enjoyed the greatest season in college football history, breaking 39 NCAA records, most of which still stand today. Fast forward to the NFL and the Detroit Lions. During his incredible career, Barry won the Rookie of the Year award, led the league in rushing four times, was named to the Pro Bowl nine times, rushed for 2,053 yards in one season, won the MVP award, registered ten consecutive 1,000-plus yards per season, gained more than 15,200 yards, and is number 5 on the list of career rushing leaders. Fans will delight in his forthcoming tales of teammates, coaches, rivals and big games. In this book, Barry also covers much more than football. With disarming candor, he explores his relationships with his former wife, his children, his parents and his siblings, including his sister Nancy, whose tragic death came way too soon. Since there is no way to fully capture Barry’s moves in words, there is a link to exclusive content that features game footage from Barry’s youth football days, all the way through his career with the Detroit Lions. There are also many family, college and pro photos that are not included in the book. No matter how well you remember Barry’s stellar on-field performance, these highlights will give you a new appreciation of one of the most spectacular runners in the history of the game. A rare treat for every football fan. This book also includes original commentary from Emmitt Smith, Mike Singletary, Lomas Brown, Wayne Fontes, Kevin Glover, Louis Oliver and Dale Burkholder.

Not necessarily the greatest read, but it felt like his own words, which is probably the most important thing in an autobiography. I was a big fan of him as a player, and I'm happy to have read his story from him.

I'm sure I am biased as I am a huge Barry Sanders fan. If you love football and know anything about Barry, you will like this easy read. If you are not a football fan, this book is probably not for you.
