Daniel Thompson was an excellent writer. There's a factual, but informal quality about his writing that makes it very enjoyable. In addition to a pleasant conversational tone the information is concise, helpful, and fascinating. The section on gold-leafing techniques was especially useful. For remote materials, instructions are given on making your own. It is a great historic overview and instructional manual. You can't beat that.
