Jamie has been working so, so hard to save up the money needed to move out of his abusive mother’s house. He’s tired of being screamed at, having things thrown at him, and having to hide under his bed at night to avoid his mother and her boyfriend of the week.
When Jamie comes across a beautiful apartment for a steal, he leaps at the chance to make it his own. The apartment is old and the wiring isn’t great, but it’s gorgeous, full of character, and best of all—it’s a private, quiet, and safe space that’s all for Jamie.
But Jamie might not be the only one living in the apartment. Something else is lurking in the shadows. Something who finds Jamie very interesting indeed…
The Monster Beneath has a 6 Dove rating for noncon featuring a nonhuman with tentacles from the void. No happy ending.
I'm probably going to hell for kind of being into this
Hear me out. As messed up and dark as this is it's not what I like to call grimm dark erotica. That's when there's no story, there's no point, it's just dark and depressing and upsetting. Some people are into that, I very much am not. This story however, because of how D Dove wrote it, there's the tiniest sliver of hope. In the back of your mind, you know that this story would have turned consensual and kind of cute had this been a full length novel. Noh cares about Jamie. He's completely misguided in how he show's it and thinks Jamie is saying his name the whole time when he's not but he's not malicious either. I'm not saying the story is for everyone by any stretch of the imagination but it works if you're into it.
As somebody who is no stranger to dark books, I was fine with the content. The only reason it's not a five star for me is because it does take so long for anything to happen. About 60 to 70% of the book is build up and setting. In a novel I love stuff like this but because as novella it lasted a tad too long in my opinion. But I like the story, I really like the writing, and I know what to expect from the dove rating system. I was told what would happen if I opened the box and I still did. Can't be mad.
Loved it 10/10 monsterfucker stars Extra stars for a super sweet human; a super loving monster (even if the human doesn’t want it …) somnophilia, “sweet dreams” and more! TW for loving noncon; references to abusive parents
What a great novella featuring an inhuman character, a broken poor boy and finally a chance at happiness(?)
When reading it, I had the idea that this could've easily been a full book but seeing there are more novellas coming, it seems to be the case (in a way).
The hurt/comfort was briefly introduced but is more woven though the rest of the books.
Noh was such a sweetheart. I am so happy we have also his (or their?) side of the story. His observations are so sweet but wrong too. I cringed and aaawed at the same time. So well done!
Definitely recomment reading the rest of the series of novellas.
The monster thinks he's doing everything Jamie wants, while it's opposite. So, one thinks they're in love and the other thinks he's getting taken advantage of by an unknown monster.
Just a stupid fun story lol smh - idk if we needed as much of Noh's perspective as we got and wish they could have communicated but it was short and entertaining
(Edit) oh wait hold up this is a series lol ok here we go!
Jamie's POV feels like the beginning of a horror movie describing a monster living with him, but Noh's is like a sappy romance movie. It's interesting to see how they both misunderstand what's happening (mostly Noh, the oblivious monster).
Nice introduction to the series. I've actually read this one and the rest of the books time ago, but I wanted to add a review. I really liked the set up and what it promises for what's coming.
