Wow! This was an amazing story that, once I started reading it, was almost impossible to set down. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I am very impressed. She captured the beauty and wonder of the trail, while also clearly showing the myriad of dangers present. I will add that this story is not for the faint of heart. It is a beautiful story, however, the author does not shy away from some tragic and realistic moments.

I love marriage of convenience stories and this one was beautifully done. I loved the way these two characters were drawn to each other from early on as they began traveling the trail, however, there was still uncertainty, especially from Rose, regarding being forced to wed. But I loved that Daniel was determined and certain that they could make their marriage into a beautiful future together.

Daniel and Rose’s story was absolutely captivating and look forward to reading future books in this series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

“it’s not your reflection in a mirror that’s important. The only mirror you will ever need is the light in the eyes of the woman you love and who loves you.”

Location, Time period, Cross-cultural. Love’s Winding Road by Susan F. Craft has it all. Plus exciting action, faith, and a marriage of convenience story with a closed-door romance. I am thrilled to discover this new-to-me author as she embarks on a new series, Great Wagon Road!

The year is 1753, the location is The Great Wagon Trail, starting in Pennsylvania and traveling South through Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia. We follow the wagon train’s adventures and tragedies as we learn what a great price these settlers paid to get away from England and the church and prejudices there.

Unfortunately, as Rose and her Irish-Scots family discover, America is full of prejudice, too, especially against the Native Americans. No distinction is made between peaceful and warring tribes, but a person is judged on the basis of their skin, speech, and customs. Since wagon train scout Daniel Fordham is 1/2 Cherokee, he often is ill-treated. Daniel learned an important skill from his Cherokee mother…”she taught me a great deal about people, too—how to judge them by their actions, not their words.” How I wish I could say we have made great strides in our country to see each person like that, but sometimes it seems our relationships are worse than ever, as we see skin first, not the heart.

Just as Rose and the other train members were often tense, warily watching for the next danger, you may find yourself biting your nails and enduring a rapid heartbeat with the constant perils. Be warned.

But you will also fall in love with Daniel and Rose, and cheer them on as a relationship develops. But can such a cross-cultural love survive in this tenuous world? What of Rebekah, the native American woman who believes that Daniel is in love with her?

Rose’s grieving sister has traveled with the family. Will the hardships to come deepen her depression, or can she begin to make a way in the wilderness alongside her sister?

While I love Aunt Sarah, the unsung hero of the novel has got to be Tsiyi. I can’t pronounce his name ( because looking at the spelling wipes the given pronunciation from my mind every time)! He is Daniel’s amazing companion. You’ll have to read the novel to discover just how valuable Tsiyi is.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit, plus I bought my own ebook. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Love's Winding Road is an excellent first book in the Great Wagon Road Series by Susan F. Craft. It is a marvelous story of the perils of travel during the 1750’s in what would become the US East Coast. Much has been written about the Westward Movement, but this is long before the with immigrant families traveling South through Virginia down to Georgia and even further.

Rose Jackson and her Irish immigrant family have crossed the Atlantic Ocean, now traveling by wagon to new land for settling. Both heartwarming and heartbreaking, this realistic story brings their travel to vivid life. The half-Cherokee scout, Daniel Fordham and his mother’s Cherokee family are also a large part of the story. It is simply a riveting read that is difficult to put down, but one that I was also sad to see end. However, the ending is wonderful. I am hoping for many more glimpses into this family in future books. Highly recommend this Christian historical fiction story, Love's Winding Road.

The publisher Wild Hearts Books provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.

Simply Sweet

Sweet and simply written. Reminded me of Jannette Oak's works in the 1990s. Strong Christian undertone and beautiful potrayal of the Cherokee.

The journey promised to be long as people join the wagon train bound for a better life . Rose and her family join the group with hope of a better future and long to find a place to call their own. They are warned of the danger they may face on the trip. I can’t imagine how long the days were for them. I loved learning about the different remedies used to treat wounds and illness. It is interesting to think how people were able to use things grown naturally that could heal so easily.

Rose has a quality that many talk about. Her flaming red hair captures the attention of many but her kindness is what draws people to her. She is braver than she thinks when she is captured by enemies. What a terrifying experience it was to look death right in the eyes. That moment it felt like time stood still.

Daniel is an excellent scout and with his faithful dog they make others feel protected. Daniel is part Cherokee and perhaps some on the wagon train don’t like him much. He proves his bravery when he rescues Rose from those who kidnapped her. I really like his dog and loved how he took to Rose right away.

How easy rumors start after Rose is brought back to camp. Seems some think her and Daniel were let’s say a little cozy when he stayed with her out in the wilderness after he rescued her. Jealousy shows its ugly head when a young woman who Rose never trusted starts spreading lies around camp about her. The solution that Rose’s father comes up with to stop all this talk going on really surprises a few. Is it the right thing to do to quiet the rumors?

The story was one I found myself completely involved in. The author does an amazing job of making the scenery come to life as we follow Rose, Daniel and Rose’s sister Nora through trials. Danger surrounds them but what I loved the most was the moment these two people realize how much they care for each other. The saying , “ absence makes the heart grow fonder,” really relates to this story. Rose and Daniel overcome misunderstandings, danger that threatens the life of one and a fierce determination to return home for the other. Their faith is evident and I loved watching how family is important in this vivid story of survival.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Love’s Winding Road by Susan F. Craft is the first book in Craft’s Great Wagon Road series. This story is quite the adventure! After reading this story, I am even more grateful than ever that I live in 2024 and not 1753. The days of traversing the American wilderness in covered wagons was not for the feint of heart. You had to be more than tough to survive — you had to have God on your side. In this story, our main characters are Rose and Daniel. Man, do they go through some arduous experiences. From inclement weather, to wild animals attacking, to kidnapping, and to attacks by warring Native Americans, this story brought the terror of travel in the 1750s and then some. I loved many things about this story. I appreciated the sense of community the travelers created right from the start. It makes sense that they would grow a close bond. They all really had to work well together just to survive. That would make anyone form a close bond. I enjoyed seeing Rose and Daniel’s relationship grow even as they were forced into a marriage of convenience. Yeah, that was a hard moment for both of them, but they went into their forced relationship honorably and compassionately. As far as characters go, Rose is a very sweet heroine and Daniel is the best kind of hero — the protector kind. It doesn’t matter who you are, if you need saving Daniel will be there! My favorite aspect to Daniel is his compassion. Rose’s sister, Norah, has lived through some of the worst things a woman could live through — you’ll have to read the story to find out — and Daniel accepts her as a sister right away. He genuinely cares about Norah’s well-being and offers her a place in his and Rose’s home. It’s very sweet and endearing. I wish more people were like Daniel — able to see the hurt someone is walking through and be willing to shoulder a little of their pain.

I know this review does not do this story justice. For a book that’s only 266 pages, Love’s Winding Road sure does pack a mighty punch. If you are a fan of highly engaging, intense Historical Romances full of adventure, then this is the story for you. You definitely do not want to miss out on this story!

I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on April 13, 2024, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Love’s Winding Road by author Susan F. Craft is a Christian Historical Romance. It is book one in the Great Wagon Road series. Set in 1750s this story is a marriage of convenience that includes danger, suspense, faith, and adventure.

This is the tale of Rose Jackson. She and her family, all Irish immigrants, have joined the wagon train to South Carolina. They are hoping to make a new life here. Daniel Fordham is the wagon train’s scout. He is half Cherokee and half white.

The author has a nice style of writing. Her story drew me in quickly. I felt anxious with the travelers as they encountered dangers. I rejoiced with them in their triumphs. The details made me feel like I was on the journey with them. It is obvious a lot of research was done before penning this novel.

All characters were finely crafted and believable. It was easy to become invested in them. The author did a phenomenal job developing them. They struggled with unfair issues that some people still face today.

There are twists and turns and a faith element sprinkled throughout this book. Often Rose prays for protection and safety. The suspense had me turning page after page until the end. It is a well writing novel that is poignant and will stay with readers.

I highly recommend this to mature readers. Due to the subject matter young teens probably would find it difficult to read in some sections. Historical fiction readers will love this. It gets a 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.

What I think you should know:
Love’s Winding Road by Susan J Craft is the first book in the Great Wagon Road series. It is a historical fiction set in 1753. It follows settlers as they travel from Pennsylvania to South Carolina along what was known as the Great Wagon Road.

What you might need to know:
This is not a fluffy read, it gives a graphic and realistic ( if somewhat Eurocentric) view of what life would have been like for settlers. I would not recommend this book for immature readers as it does involve kidnapping and death.

What I think about this book:
As a Carolina girl who has been fascinated with books about wagon trains since I was an elementary schooler who played Oregon Trail I was particularly fascinated by this book. When I add in the fact that some of my ancestors most likely traveled the very road I felt the dangers that they must have faced in a way that opened my eyes like never before. Rose and her family showed such strength and grace that I couldn’t help but love them. Daniel was also a wonderful character, instead of being caught between two worlds like some characters I have read Daniel seems to have embraced the best of both cultures. When an author creates a fictional story that makes me want to learn more about history I consider it a success. Bravo Susan! I can’t wait to read more in the series!

Just as the title suggests, Rose and Daniel must travel a very winding road of unbelievable tragedy and joyful highs that will give them hope for their future for themselves and friends and family.

This story absolutely had my attention from page one. Rose and Daniel meet on the wagon train heading to South Carolina, she with her family and Daniel the wagon train scout. Rose and her family have already met with tragedy before this leg of their journey begins. But they are determined to get to their promised land even after all they have been through. It will not be an easy journey, and I was saddened by some of the events that took place.

Daniel is half Cherokee and half white. He is good at being a scout, but he is also anxious to get home again. He is also very enamored with Rose, a woman he cannot stop thinking about. And when her life is put in danger, he will do all he can to save her. As they journey on events take place that call for Daniel and Rose to be married. Will they be able to survive all that is before them?

This story is one of my favorites for this year. It is wrought with tension, romance, and faith. It is also the start of a new series I am looking forward to reading.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Love’s Winding Road is a marriage of convenience story but also a travelling west story but also so much more! Read it and find out just what that more is!

This is the first book in a new series. It’s set in the late 1700s. And in it, we see the westward expansion movement. Settlers venturing into the unknown. The land of the savages to be more precise.

Rose and her family are new to America from Ireland and they’re not journeying west. When Rose finds herself falling in love with the half-Cherokee scout on the journey she’s not sure that anything can ever come of it. Well, she’s wrong.

But she probably isn’t happy with how that comes about. She finds herself married to him but only after being kidnapped by Indians and suffering a fall into a rushing river from which he has to save her. So much action going on in this one! Lots of suspense for a romance novel.

You’re going to need to grab a copy of the book before I give it all away!

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

Love’s Winding Road is book one in the Great Wagon Road series and is written by
Susan F. Craft. I love marriage of convenience books. I also love wagon trail books. So I was super excited to see this show up in my mail box.

Rose Jackson and her Irish immigrant family join a wagon train headed for a new life in South Carolina. Along the way she finds herself drawn to the half-Cherokee wagon scout, Daniel. He also feels drawn to her. Rose is suddenly captured by Indians and Daniel rescues her. In doing so, rumors start to fly at camp about how they may have been inappropriate.

Rose’s father comes up with a solution. Marry. They do so and Daniel had a hard time adjusting. He’s used to being in control and having a lot of self control and that has gone out the window now that he’s met Rose. I loved seeing their characters get to know each other.

The author has done a great job is showcasing what life may have been like for those who had long days of travel. I enjoyed learning about all of the remedies they used for illnesses and injuries. I love stories where I can learn while I’m enjoying the story. The author has written some great details into the story so that you feel like you are there with the characters.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

Christian Historical Romance is a wonderful genre. Love's Winding Road by Susan F. Craft is Book 1 in the Great Wagon Road Series. I recently had the opportunity to read this book.

I was immediately drawn into the storyline and 2 things really drew me in. The story is set in the 1750's and I love the later time eras. Also, this book is a Marriage of Convenience story and I LOVE books with that theme. The 2 main characters are Rose and Daniel. Daniel is Half Cherokee and Half White. Rose is Irish Immigrant getting ready to settle in South Carolina with her family. The 2 had met early on the Wagon Train and Rose is falling for Daniel. Rose is kidnapped by the Indians and Daniel who is the Wagon Scout, rescues her from the Indians. Circumstances after the rescue determine that the pair should marry out of convenience. The marriage struggles at first, but they rely on their Faith to help them overcome the struggles. I really enjoyed seeing Daniel open up to Rose more as at first he was a bit shy. The book is one of Trials, Dangers, Faith, and LOVE. The twists and turns throughout the book kept my attention. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. FANTASTIC BOOK!

Love's Winding Road, by Susan R. Craft, is the first book in the Great Wagon Road series. This is the first book I have read by this author and found it to be very enjoyable. While many stores have been written of the Oregon Trail, this is the first I have read of the wagon trains that have moved south, this one to South Carolina. I appreciate the dangers the author points out of the travel the early settler experienced. I enjoyed the characters and their determination to make a new life for themselves. It was easy to see that Daniel and Rose developed a friendship quickly and how their feelings for each other grew.

I enjoyed how Daniel's family is so quick to help out when they get to his home. I enjoyed the ways he has made his home so that if an immediate need to flee arose, there was a secret way to safety. I also enjoyed the added suspense this story has with events that happen after Daniel and Rose settle into his home. This is a very enjoyable Christian historical fiction romance story, I look forward to reading the rest in the series.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

Love’s Winding Road” is just as beautiful as its cover! I connected with Daniel and Rose and could easily imagine walking in their shoes. What an adventure.

This is an adventure, suspense, and romance story--both sad and beautiful. The characters and their dilemmas are well crafted, and the marriage of convenience element is excellent. But my favorite element is the lovely thread of faith woven throughout.

This first book in the Great Wagon Road series, set in the late 1700s, is a wonderful look into the trials, tragedies, and unexpected turns of life, love, and transformational journeys. Wonderful for those who enjoy faith-filled, inspiring, historical fiction.

First Line: Daniel Fordham stood with the wagoners huddled around a campfire, but unlike the others, the acceleration of his heartbeat had nothing to do with the awaiting of instructions for the harrowing journey ahead.

This is a new author to me and a new series that has me already wanting more please. A heartbreaking but tender tale of life on a wagon train in 1753 along with the hazards and the joys. I can’t imagine the grueling hours each day to only cover approximately ten miles. Daniel is not readily accepted by others as he is of mixed race. Being half Cherokee doesn’t matter to Rose and her Irish immigrant family as they befriend him. Jealousy and gossip comes into play over circumstances that can’t be controlled that force a marriage. The tragedy that strikes immediately afterwards is heart wrenching and as we travel with them on a different journey than they had planned we will see God has His hand upon them. The romance is tender, some scenes are nail biting and through it all we have Tsiyi, Daniel’s dog that becomes the hero of the story on more than one occasion. I loved the patient, kind, tender, and man of faith that Daniel is and the strength that Rose has is remarkable. A wonderful, well written story that I truly enjoyed.

Christian Historical Romance

I loved this unique story! I've never heard of wagon trains that traversed South through the Eastern United States. This was long before Western migration, and Native tribes were a larger part of those earlier American years. This story features both friendly and enemy tribes welcoming and attacking those settlers. I loved the slow buildup of the romance between the half Cherokee half English wagon scout and a young Irish immigrant woman. They both had many trials that God brought them through so that they could forge a beautiful future built on love, hope, and faith! I read the ebook version that also came with a free audio version, but it used virtual voice instead of a human narrator. I listened to some of it, but I really don't like books without human narrators. They are improving, but the biggest problem now is timing and understanding who is speaking. The sound is very unnatural in timing! And there is no pause or distinction in the various character voices. This book, at least wasn't written with narration in mind, so there's no, "she said" or "he thought" types of lead ins.

What a beautiful, almost mesmerizing story! I couldn't put this book down until I finished it. Rose and Daniel's story touched my heart so much. Daniel is a scout for the wagon train that Rose's family is on. The danger and perils that they go through are so palpable! I felt I was right there along with them. The author did a great job of painting a picture of the adversity these families went through!
and how much Daniel and the wagon master tried to help them avoid these things. When Rose is kidnapped by Indians, my heart was beating so fast! I felt like it was me! I rarely have all these emotions when I read a book! That's a mark of a great storyteller!
A marriage of convenience happens later and the danger and adversity to both Daniel & Rose continue! I kept wondering how people survived in those days! It was all so realistic! Not only that but Rose experienced racism because she isn't Indian. Such a fantastic book in so many ways. I can't say enough positive things about it!

This was an interesting and inspiring story. I learned so much about the early settlers coming to the colonies. The only wagon trains I’ve read about to this point were the ones going west to settle and claim land in the new territories. This book begins in 1753 with three families, seven single men on horseback, the wagon master and a guide. They are traveling the great wagon road that was started by animals tracking through brush looking for watering holes. Later Indians made their way on it hunting and looking for enemy tribes. From Pennsylvania to Georgia this “road” was narrow and hard going for the travelers always watching out for wild animals and hostile Indians. Kidnapping, a forced marriage and horrific Indian attacks were just some of the perils they faced. They also had happier times and learned new things from the friendly Cherokee Indians. This was an eyeopening adventure and learning experience for this reader. I highly recommend it.

This touching story bursts with US history and plenty of exciting events along with the trials and tragedies the characters struggle with. It will keep readers traveling at a fast pace along with the realistic characters in this intriguing historical novel. The tale involves immigrants on a wagon train seeking to find a new home in America in addition to the Indians they come across in their demanding journey. The relationships, the pain, the love, and the forgiveness all tug at the reader’s heart along with the tender love story. I found myself wrapped up in the engaging drama, which has numerous twists and surprises. The authentic-feeling plot comes across as believable and compelling. The issues they face are universal and modern readers can easily identify with them. This looks like it will be a great series and would make a wonderful book club choice. I have to admit that I can be a "judge a book by its cover" kind of reader and when I got the first glimpse of Love's Winding Road, I knew instantly I had to get my hands on it. The beginning to the Great Wagon Road series does not disappoint. I found it to be just as beautifully written as the artwork. I adored the main characters, Rose and Daniel. I enjoyed taking this journey with them.
I am giving Love's Winding Road a very well deserved five plus stars. I have no doubt lovers and fans of clean historical romance will love it as much as me. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment from the Great Wagon Road series, Trail of Promises.

I've been a fan of books encompassing the era of wagon trains, thus I had to read Love's Winding Road and this new to me author. What a fantastic read that made it hard to pause while reading this well penned story. I am look forward to the next book in Great Wagon Road series by Susan F. Craft

This historical read set in 1753 where the wagon train is headed to South Carolina not out west with families looking for a new start on their lives in America. They encounter multiple obstacles and heartache along the way. Susan F. Craft characters were brought to life with their dialogue, struggles, faith and finding strength to endue the hardships. The romance and an unexpected wedding between Rose and Daniel gave way to moments of joy and sorrow. The wide range of events happening are true to history in ways that I was in the moment of each. The faith message among the different ethnic groups brought tears and smiles as they forged on to letting God take care of them.

Love’s Winding Road by Susan F. Craft is a Christian Historical Romance. Rose Jackson and her Irish Immigrant family join a wagon train to South Carolina to begin a new life. Instead, they encounter danger. Daniel, a half-Cherokee, serves as a scout for the wagon train.

After the Indians kidnap Rose and Daniel rescues her, their lives are forever intertwined. The twists and turns the author takes the reader on make this book come to life.

I could not put it down and read it in one session. Susan F. Craft illustrates the hardships encountered by wagon trains but also demonstrates the faith, courage, and resiliency the early settlers of our country showed.

So, if you enjoy Christian Historical Romances, check out Love’s Winding Road by Susan F. Craft.

A very heart-warming, but a times gut-wrenching story about Rose Jackson & Daniel Fordham. Rose is of Irish descent and Daniel is half-Cherokee and a scout. The story is a page-turner with descriptions of the countryside and Native American life so vivid that I felt as though I was there.

The storyline has times of struggle and survival where Rose has to dig deep inside for courage and offer up prayers to God for protection. I enjoyed the characters, the setting, and the many twists in the story that kept me on the edge of my seat.

I can't wait to read more in the series. Highly recommended.

A treasure! Greatly touching love story combined with tragedy, sorrow, danger, attacks. A wagon train that went from Philadelphia to Georgia in the early 1700s. I hadn't heard of this trail before even though we live a bit north of Phila. Such sweet and touching love scenes, they're exquisite. Irish, Scottish, English and Cherokee nationalities all come together in strength and love. There's something to learn from everyone. A dream location to live too.

Wow! What a ride!
I loved Daniel and Rose's story. There is SO MUCH action that it is quite a rollercoaster ride. While a little bit of it here and there may be a tad contrived, it does not take away from the story, which remains a page turner. The ending is both sweet and thought provoking, especially in light of historical events that followed. There is a lot of detail about the beauty of the area, the horrors that many faced and the hardships people endured. I found it especially poignant to think of the many people who tried to escape difficulties in their home countries, hoping for a better life, only to end up being killed. Very sad. Yet, in the midst of heartache and pain, is beauty and victory. Beautiful story!

I thought this story gave a good glimpse into what people would have gone though as they tried to survive in the wilderness. I liked how even though Daniel and Rose’s marriage started as one of convenience, it grew into more. I also loved how the author showed that not all Native Americans were unfriendly to the white people. I liked how she showed Rose and her sister learning to overcome their lose and learning to live. I thought the characters were great and the story was well done. I would read more by this author.

I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors.  A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.

I was attracted to the book because of the marriage of convenience trope and I wasn't disappointed.

One of the things I loved about the book was how the characters brought so much life and depth to it. Daniel and Rose were the highlight of it. I admired their tenacity through their lives difficulties and how it made them better people. Their shared love was beautiful!

I enjoyed how faith, family and love was beautifully portrayed. I am look forward to Nora and Wyatt story.

I received a copy of this book and this my honest opinion.

I've read this series out of order, but the only thing that has connected the books so far is the location - the Great Wagon Road - and the time period - the mid 1700s. The characters aren't connected, but they're all part of wagon trains, going to new lives in the "wilderness." The things they encounter are often the same - Indians (both good ones and bad ones), storms, illness, mountain lions, and learning new ways to stay alive. I think this first book has more plot twists than the others, but I enjoyed it and the characters.

Powerful story of love, loss, danger, hope

This author was new to me. I first came across her writing in reading the second of this series that had been included in an anthology of marriages of convenience. I liked her style, storytelling, so much I bought this one—I am not disappointed. Rarely can an author develop characters and story well under 300+ pages, but Craft has done so. Her details also ring with authenticity, though I haven’t “fact checked” them. So many authors are sloppy with that. All in all a book worth reading.

This book kept me reading from start to finish. If a reader likes stories about Indians and covered wagon adventures then I recommend “Love Winding Road” by Susan F. Craft. This is a story about a mixed marriage that proves that people are all alike. Like real life and history there is tragic events in this tale and even (attempted murder).
I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
