Lavender Stanhope aka Lily of the Valley is a huge pop star, but when her dad tragically dies Lavender receives a request to join her grandmother in Canon Springs. Lavender had been waiting for this moment, her father had told her all about the place he grew up. Lavender is walking a precarious line though, the town wants to vet her before accepting her into their fold but Lavender has a goal in mind that doesn't fall in line with those around her. As secrets are revealed Lavender will need to get some help but who can she trust?

I really enjoyed this one, different then what I was expecting. I liked the way you think the story will go one way only to have it surprise it. Lavender is a wonderful heroine who I hope to see more books about.

This unique and original young adult tale is intriguing and filled with tragedy, grief, mistrust, deceit, prejudice, lies, secrets, drama, and much more.
Lavender is engulfed in grief, but she decides to honour her father by completing his unfinished business in Canon Springs—a place steeped in history, wars, and bloodshed, where the past and present collide. The supernatural inhabitants of Canon Springs do not interact well with outsiders. As Lavender conceals her magic and her true purpose for being there, she searches for the one thing that could either save or destroy them. However, she may risk losing herself in the process and might have bitten off more than she can chew.
With mysteries, hidden agendas, societal pressures, and looming threats, Jordan has crafted a complex and dangerous tale that encompasses the lives of witches, supernatural creatures, Native American mystics, and magic.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys original young adult paranormal stories that stand apart from many others.

Elizabeth blends several classic “supernaturals living secretly in the modern USA” tropes with some fresh nuances, creating a young adult supernatural thriller that is more about the complexity of making good decisions than flashy powers or defeating evil.

Lavender Stanhope leads a secret life as teen singing sensation Lily of the Valley; and an even more secret life as a witch. Following her father death in a car crash, Lavender receives an invitation from her estranged grandmother to move to Canon Springs, the hidden witch settlement her father fled when he was young. While Lavender would rather spend time with her mother grieving, her father had unfinished business in Canon Springs and this invitation might be the only chance Lavender has to get past the wards and finish it for him.

Elizabeth sets her story in a modern America where a group of witches helped the rebels during the Revolutionary War and witches live hidden in a special enclave. However, unlike many witchy town fantasy, the separation from mundane humans is almost total and—it is strongly implied—only a single small group of witches opposed the British. Thus, although Canon Springs has a similar society to Twenty-first Century small-town America, non-residents know nothing of the inhabitants and residents have little direct knowledge of the outside world.

Thus, Lavender enters the town with only decades-out-of-date information and, because the elders aren’t willing to reveal the existence of magic to Lavender until they trust her, does not have an easy way to learn the truth about the town’s history. This makes the initial section of the main plot a tense interplay between Lavender’s efforts to track down the hidden tomb that is key to fulfilling her father’s plan and the combination of mistrust and social pressure to conform from the inhabitants.

Elizabeth leans hard into the magical prejudice trope that is common in supernaturals-among-us settings, making Canon Springs a sundowner town, albeit on the basis of parentage outside the founding witch families rather than ethnicity. The irrationality of this stance is covertly highlighted by the witches having allied with Native American mystics.

As Lavender attempts to balance investigation and hiding that she is investigating behind a facade of fitting in, she finds some of the prejudices she has from her parents might not be accurate (at least any more) and starts to form friendships. Thus, while she doesn’t like the society and its leaders, she is engagingly conflicted when fulfilling her father’s intent might require risking Canon Springs being heavily damaged.

Although the inhabitants have the mores of nineteen-fifties racist America, Elizabeth defines their magic as being more pleasant than the magic of other witches at the cost of being weaker. This creates an interesting moral ambivalence between their social and mystical characters, supporting the feeling that Lavender’s decision is more complex than good protagonist overthrowing evil society.

In contrast, the final section of the main plot is a series of dramatic reveals and escalating threats followed by an equally decisive series of resolutions. While none of these are, in hindsight, actually inconsistent with what has come before, they do result in a world that is different from the one the reader was presented with during most of the book. Therefore, depending on the individual reader’s preference for narrators keeping secrets from the reader, these sudden changes might either feel like a powerful evocation of the mutual deceit between Lavender and her father’s childhood community or a cascade of un-foreshadowed twists.

Another potentially unfortunate effect of these sudden extensive changes is that the reader has no idea how dangerous and complex a threat is or how effective the various types of magic might be against it apart from Lavender’s brief narration that things are serious or Canon Springs’ magic is weak—a benchmark that is potentially undermined in the reader’s mind by Lavender having been defined as a character who doesn’t know much about Canon Springs.

While the story is mostly centred on witches, there are other supernatural creatures. As with the magic, these are consistent (in hindsight) and have enough difference from the most famous portrayals to avoid seeming stereotypes.

As is nigh-ubiquitous in a young adult book with an underclass, Lavender is drawn to a boy in the oppressed group. However, Elizabeth does not dive into the immediate passionate romance plot that some books might feature, instead leaving it open whether this is the start of a relationship or the need for an ally.

Lavender is a highly sympathetic protagonist, plausibly marked by grief but channelling that into a desire to fulfil her father’s plan rather than angst and moping; thus, she will not irritate readers who dislike more passive or introspective characters. Her secretly being a pop superstar does not overtly create or solve any significant issues that could not equally have been solved by her being good at singing and dancing; however, it does establish a solid background in partitioning her life that tacitly explains her ability at hiding her intentions (and magic) from the inhabitants of Canon Springs.

The supporting cast are similarly defined by secretiveness combined with a realistically complex response to situations.

Overall, I enjoyed this novella. I recommend it to readers seeking urban fantasy that focuses on the emotional impacts of concealing one’s true nature and doing the right thing.

I received a free copy from the author with a request for a fair review.

“Witches of Ajax” by Jordan Elizabeth is a captivating young adult novel that seamlessly blends elements of fantasy, mystery, and personal growth. The story centers on Lavender Stanhope, a seventeen-year-old pop sensation known to her fans as Lily of the Valley. Despite her glamorous life, Lavender is thrust into turmoil when her father dies in a mysterious accident. In an effort to find closure, she visits his hometown of Canon Springs, a place steeped in eerie legends and a bloodstained history.

Canon Springs is more than just a backdrop; it’s a character in itself, filled with ancient creatures and long-held grudges that inexplicably tie to Lavender’s own destiny. As she navigates her grief, Lavender confronts the town’s dark secrets and uncovers her own latent abilities. Her journey is one of self-discovery, resilience, and the realization that saving herself may be intrinsically linked to saving Canon Springs.

Jordan Elizabeth masterfully crafts a narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats, weaving suspense with rich character development. Lavender’s evolution from a sheltered celebrity to a courageous young woman is both believable and inspiring. The supporting cast adds depth to the story, each character bringing their own complexities and secrets to light.

The novel’s pacing is well-executed, with each chapter peeling back another layer of the town’s mysteries and Lavender’s own past. Themes of grief, identity, and the battle between personal desires and greater responsibilities are explored thoughtfully, making “Witches of Ajax” more than just a supernatural tale; it’s a story about confronting one’s fears and the power of self-determination.

In conclusion, “Witches of Ajax” is a spellbinding read that will appeal to fans of young adult fantasy and mystery. Jordan Elizabeth’s storytelling prowess shines through, delivering a tale that is both heart-wrenching and exhilarating.

It's a captivating story where past and present clash. I love how the author has used history to put life into the story. The characters are all interesting and there are enough twists and turns to keep the readers entertained. It's a unique paranormal story unlike I have ever read and for that alone I love it.

When Lavender's father dies in an accident, she is invited to visit his hometown. It's a mysterious place that has secrets no outsider is allowed to unravel. But Lavender isn't like any other outsider. Her father has told her stories and she is there to fulfill one of his wishes. Whether the witches of Ajax accept her or not is of little consequence. She doesn't plan to stay there for long, anyway. Or so she thought. But her grandmother and her destiny might have something else in mind. Will Lavender be able to solve all the mysteries that shroud this small town, or will she lose herself?

Overall, the story is intriguing and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking for an original fantastical book unlike any you would've read before. If you are not afraid of exploring the boundaries between genres then this story is for you.

P.S. I'd like to thank the author for the complimentary copy. My review is an honest opinion and has nothing to do with the author or the publisher.

Witches of Ajax was an intriguing book about witches, werewolves, and vampires. I was shocked at several characters' character development throughout the book, especially nearing the end when I thought I knew who and what each of the characters were and how they fit into the storyline. The author throws in some exciting twists that help build up the mystery of the book, bringing it to a whole new level of intrigue. I enjoyed reading about the life experiences that our main character must go through to fulfill a promise she had made before her father passed away in a tragic car accident. This promise is what pushes her to new limits she has been preparing for since her childhood. When faced with a tough decision, will she choose to follow the path she's been preparing for, or will she choose to protect those in need? This was a dynamic read that captured my interest right from the start. It definitely takes a whole new view of witches and other mythical creatures and how they interact one with another.

Lavender, also known as ‘Lily of the Valley’ is a popstar singer. When her father passes away in a car crash, Lily gets an invitation to move to her fathers hometown of Canon Springs. She grew up hearing stories from her father about this place and has always dreamed of going there. She goes in hopes to complete some of her fathers unfinished business.

The town is a secret witch settlement, decades behind in information, Lavender struggles to learn the ways while the inhabitants of the town struggle to accept Lavender as one of their own. Lavender has to learn the truth about herself and her family in order to complete her mission. She just has to pass any tests thrown her way to gain the trust of the town.

I really enjoyed this story. It’s unexpected and unpredictable making it a fun read for readers of most ages. The story took a different direction than the stereotypical routes in these types of books and I am all for it. The author did a great job keeping you on the edge of your seat with anticipation.

This book is an exciting YA fantasy story that takes you on the journey the characters go on. I really enjoyed watching this story unfold. Lavender had to not only navigate the death of her father but also everything they discover in his home town. I though the plot was really interesting and the author did a great job of making it engaging.
This author is still a very new one to me but I have enjoyed everything I have read so far. Her books are engaging and entertaining. I connect with the characters and want to know more about the story. I also have to say that, even if the description hadn’t grabbed my attention, the cover for this book definitely would have done. It eye catching and brilliant to look at. I would recommend this book and I am looking forward to discovering more of this author.

This was a page turning YA fantasy. This book was a great read with twists and turns that kept me gripped. It is full of action, adventure, magic, secrets and a town with a dark past.

Lavender had the life some teenagers dream of. She is a pop star and spends her time touring and performing everything is great until an accident results in her losing her father.
Now she has received a letter from her Grandma in Canon Springs asking her to return.
Lavender returns wanting to know more about her father and the place he once called home. However when she returns things aren't what they seem and Canon Springs seems darker than she could ever imagine.
With the town having a dark and bloody history where does Lavender fit in? What secrets are hiding and being kept from her? And know she has returned will she ever be able to leave?

Lavender is living her best life as a pop star. However, when her father dies, she finds herself being summoned to her father's hometown by her grandmother. What awaits her in Canon Springs are secrets, witches, and other paranormal creatures. She must decide if she can face what the town has in store in order to keep the promise that she made to her father...or is all too much and she should just return to the life she knows?

This was a good story that I finished in one sitting. Watching Lavender come across the hidden side of Canon Springs was like watching a puzzle come together. There were twists and turns, but they all play an integral part in finishing what her father started. Definitely kept me turning the pages. This is author I will check out again!

Witches, vampires, and werewolves oh my. Too cold to do anything but lay in bed and read kinda day. Today’s new author Jordan Elizabeth and what a dynamic, interesting read this one was.
Lily thought she just inherited her father’s musical talents but there was so much more. She faces truths, twists and turns but the ultimate question is what she will do next. She’s been preparing for one path in life only to face a fork. Continue the path she’s been working towards or protect those in need? This one kept me guessing and trying to figure out who was what from start to finish. I will definitely be looking into more of Jordan Elizabeth and her amazing works. This was just the beginning of my fangirl journey with this author.

Lavender Stanhope is the biggest popstar on the planet selling out shows and having hits at the top of the charts. Things are going a little too well and the bubble may be about to burst. Her father has passed away on an accident and he wanted her to go back home, to Canon Springs, to find something. What is that something? Does it have to do with all the spirits, witches, vampires and other paranormal creatures? These creatures have plans that center around Lavender and it's up to her to decide whether or not she is a willing participant. All she wants to do is get out of there, but leaving could come at a cost.

This is a new author to me and I enjoyed the work. The characters were great and I hope there will be more books to come about Lavender and her friends.

Lavender, or Lilly as she is known, is a really interesting main character, I found myself never sure of what she was going to do in the story, which was extremely welcomed. This was absolutely a well written story that I enjoyed immensely. I found not only Lavender to be an interesting character, but as were the other characters in the story. The author did an excellent job of blending the past and the present, giving you a well-rounded view of the story. The story was filled with drama, secrets, tragedy, mistrust, lies and so much more, wrapped into a paranormal young adult story that is enjoyable even for adults. I highly recommend this if you are looking for a story that is going to keep you guessing until the very end!

I started out reading YA supernatural books, and they’re still my comfort read when I want something easy. This book has it all- magic, intrigue, mythical creatures, and danger.

When Lavender’s dad tragically dies, she is called to come to his hometown-which she’d always wanted to do. Unbeknownst to Lavender, though, the creatures there have plans for her. She intends to visit, fulfill a promise she made her dad, and leave. Will she actually be able to do that or will she end up stuck in the town due to her legacy? This book has a ton of twists and turns that keep the reader guessing. It was easy to get lost in the story and I highly recommend it for anyone who is looking for an easy, but interesting read.

This is a newer author which I enjoyed reading. I enjoyed this author’s writing style that brought the plot to life. Their attention to details made the story realistic and hard to put down. This is a well written story about Lavender. Her father has recently died and she has returned back to his town. What she doesn’t realize is the mistrust that she finds as she is trying to come to terms with her father’s passing. I enjoyed her character and what she brought to the story. She made the story easy and entertaining. She is a connectable, relatable character that had me wanting to know more. I really enjoyed reading this book. I highly recommend this book.

This is a story of witches and other supernatural's who thought they knew their past. Lavender has just lost her dad and is just going through life with it being her and her mom. But then an invitation comes for her to visit her dad's family. She accepts the invite, but the town is just not what it seems. Her dad would tell her stories of when he grew up in Canon Springs. Lav would walk around the town and try to piece the places from the stories together. As she was doing this, she did not realize that the town had a darker past. Or that her mother's family had played a part in its history as well.

Witches of Ajax by Jordan Elizabeth is an intriguing YA fantasy with witches, action, adventure, discovery, danger, drama, mystery, challenges, paranormal elements, secrets, grief, agendas, music, lyrics, and more.
With the death of her father weighing on her, Lavender travels to his hometown knowing he had unfinished business there. Little did she know what awaited her there- and so the adventure begins….
I have read a few of Jordan Elizabeth’s books now, so when this popped up as a new release it was an easy decision to snap up a copy to explore.
Happy Reading…

Oh boy!! WOW!! I completely devoured this book late into the night. This was a gripping tale of a 17 year old Hannah Montana like MC. She gets her private life while enjoying fully performing on stage. Things get out of her control when she is summoned to her father’s hometown by her grandmother that she has never met. I never quite knew if I liked this grandmother or not. I’m still on the fence.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I was gripped by her writing and style. I loved the history that was within the story. I’ll be looking for more books by this author for sure.

A Wonderland of Imagination

Witches, Vampires, and Werewolves… Oh, my! Jordan Elizabeth has written a marvelously entertaining story. I think my favorite part is the story is loosely based on the history of the surrounding area. Lavender is a teenage heartthrob, but doesn’t let that deter her from the mission her family has been planning for ages. She is a rockstar, as is her mom, Pollyanna. They get some help from a few unexpected people, Fox and Damara. Jordan has done a fantastic writing job with this book and it was so easy to feel like you were a part of the story. I enjoyed reading this story. It is a fast paced read and it only took me a few hours to read it.

At 17, Lily of the Valley (aka Lily Stanhope) is on top of the world pop charts, having inherited the bulk of her father’s musical talents. But she inherited something else as well, the combined parental powers of witchery. After 10 years of silence, Lily’s grandmother has decided that it is time for her to “come home” to Canon Springs, a place much like the Hotel California, where you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave. What follows is a dark and moody story full of ghosts, witches, minotaurs and other creatures. Can Lily locate the one thing her father asked to find before his untimely death? Will she ever make it back to her mom and the top of the charts? If you enjoy teen mystical fantasy, this is a book you won’t want to miss. Definitely suited for the older teen due to some graphic language and sexual situations.

This is a short book mainly involving witches. Lavender’s father dies and she is n’évites back to her dad’s hometown. Knowing that he had something that he never got to finish, she returns to finish it for him. Things in Canon Springs are strange. Not everything is as it seems on the surface. Keeping who she really is a secret, she tries to unravel the mystery. The story has drama, lies and secrets. There are some twists and turns. It’s original but not a gripping tale. Lavender is a singer and every so often would break into song. So it was weird for me. I felt like the book was partially a musical. It’s a good book for teenagers.

The life of Lavender is built on pop star success but will that all end now that her dad has died and she has discovered a life that is totally different from what she knew? This book is full of witches, vampires, minotaurs and mystical beings of the like. I really enjoyed the development of this story line and would have really liked to see more development in the relationships between Lavender and her "friends". Fast paced with some sexual encounters and harsh language that make me suggest this book be for more mature teens/young adults. I hope there is more to this story and that there is a series started after this one.

I think my only complaint is I would have loved to see more. The story was great and interesting, I didn’t mind Lavender’s “I’m better” attitude that sometimes came out because well, she was better. I would have liked to see more of her becoming friends and developing better relations with the people she claimed she liked, since the story is short and fast paced you just have to take her word for it. I like in the end the town had to come together and work with the Minotaurs to save it. I’d recommend the book to high schoolers and up and hope the author creates more off this storyline.

Witches of Ajax is a fast-paced, engaging read with a meticulously crafted plot that captures the reader’s attention from the opening page. At the heart of the story is a famous singer who conceals a hidden identity, navigating the complex interplay between public adoration and the secret challenges of a magical realm. Her double life not only deepens the narrative but also adds a fascinating layer of mystery and intrigue. The blend of supernatural elements and character-driven storytelling makes this novel a compelling choice for fans of fantasy and hidden-identity tales alike.

This book starts off with some history then jumps forward. It’s nice to have history mixed in with the storyline. After a tragedy, Lavender starts experiencing things she has never experienced. Which sets off a trip with her and her mom to her dad’s hometown. While the welcoming may seem warm and fuzzy ulterior motives are in play. This was such a great book and perfect for middle school to high school levels
