Trochę się na tym przejechałem. W założeniu to był wymarzony dla mnie komiks. Gdy oglądałem przykładowe plansze, zachwycałem się grafikami, psychodelicznymi kolorami oraz mnogością stylów i pomysłów. To wszystko zostaje, Musturi faktycznie popisuje się tu wszechstronnością, odwołując się z jednej strony do amerykańskiego undergroundu z pod znaku Crumba czy Garego Pantera, a z drugiej do klasyków francuskiego komiksu jak Moebius czy Caza. Całość niemal narkotyczna, zachwycająca feerią barw i stylów.

Co z tego skoro czuję się przytłoczony treścią. „Future” oszałamia mnogością alternatywnych światów. Od utopii w stylu New Age, po katastroficzne futurystyczne wizje rodem z „Incala”. Autor serwuje całe ściany tekstu o specyfice przyszłych światów, w których człowiek jest nic nieznaczącym trybikiem, rządzi „Firma”, rzeczywistość kreuje sztuczna inteligencja, a największym zagrożeniem staje się artysta. Odwrót od natury na rzecz zgubnego kapitalizmu, materializmu, hedonizmu i innych izmów staje się przyczyną całkowitej dehumanizacji i ekologicznej katastrofy. W efekcie nasze wybory nie mają już żadnego sensu i znaczenia.

Niestety to, co być może nieźle działało w formie pojedynczych zinów, zebrane razem zmienia się w bardzo ciężkostrawną, przegadaną i nużącą całość. Naprawdę nie chcę pisać banałów o przyjemności płynącej tekstu, bo nie tego oczekuję od komiksu, ale „Future” mnie pokonało. Chciałem ciekawego czytelniczego wyzwania, dostałem nudne, ciągnące się w nieskończoność kosmiczne wodolejstwo, w którym zbytnie nagromadzenie wszystkiego, osłabia siłę przekazu

He's mastered such varied comics forms that this collection of related shorts feels like an anthology by ten different artists sent back in time. From rainbow colored, marshmallowy goofiness to splattered and shredded punky blasts, Musturi is a one man art machine, and all in service of making us laugh at our increasingly catastrophic world. 9/10

The variety of art is pretty astounding, although the near-endless dystopic cynicism can be a bit much at times. In a way, it's a kind of dark reverse of fellow Fantagraphics collection Parallel Lives.

Another Fantagraphics release that I'd overlooked last year. Took forever to get through this thing. Goodreads says I started it in September 2024. It would have taken me even longer if I'd actually read every little bit of text in here. It's packed with letters, comics, and other nonsense. Hard to describe this. Exhausting and quite out of this world at times. Great art but confusing to follow.

Aquí tenemos algo bastante único en forma y estilo(s). Este tomo recopila los 10 numeros de future, cuyo contenido es una ensalada de historias cada una con su propio estilo de dibujo (e incluso su falta de él) pero que van unidas por ligeras conexiones y por su temática. Future pretende echar mano a la ciencia ficción para mostrar un posible futuro al que nos dirigimos por culpa de los males de nuestro tiempo (consumo de masas, el capitalismo, hacer que todo sea un producto, etc.) y no lo hace con pelos en la lengua, ya sea con segmentos mas introspectivos como los de Future Forecast o con cosillas mas gamberras como Reality Show.
Debido a esta combinación de formato y temática recomiendo leerlo "de a pocos" para no acabar con un empacho como me ha pasado por momentos, pero si te interesa una lectura algo experimental no dudes en incarle el diente

A sort of interactive magazine produced from the future (or perhaps many possible futures) intended to communicate what culture has become to citizens of the past. Complete with recurring segments, letter pages, strips, advertisements, and editor introductions, this magazine is a humorous look into how the culture of humanity has devolved.


While the art of this series, which changes drastically in style between segments, is thoroughly entertaining the content is rather middling. The humor is very one note, focusing on an Idiocracy-like juvenilization of society that only yielded the occasional laugh and rarely anything besides surface level social commentary. There also isn't much else to the storytelling or world building with exploration of these future environments feeling quite shallow. The "extras" like letter pages and editor introductions feel needlessly dense and also add little intrigue or humor. Aesthetically, the book is quite interesting with a diverse utilization of different techniques and styles that feels more like an anthology featuring multiple artists but is instead produced entirely by Musturi. While I was hoping the visual complexity that attracted me to this title would make up for any shortcomings in narrative or writing, that ended being too tall a mountain to climb.

Esta novela es de lo más atractivo y original que he leído últimamente. Más allá de su estética (o, mejor dicho, sus estéticas ya que cada trama tiene la suya propia) o de su técnica narrativa, Future te ofrece un conjunto de historias aparentemente inconexas que, cuando las unes, te dejan mucho que pensar sobre la "naturaleza humana", el presente y hacia dónde vamos en el mañana.

Muy recomendable, especialmente si eres fan del género distópico y de los cómics.

I really enjoyed all of the awesome artstyles but I may be slightly dumb for this book. I definitely got the general vibe of “capitalism bad, human nature bad, life is meaningless,” but other than that most of the storytelling went over my head. Nevertheless it was awesome to just enjoy the art.

Psychédélique à fond, philosophique, politique, mérite d’être lu plusieurs fois pour comprendre encore plus de choses. De nombreuses histoires imbriquées, autant d’histoires que de styles différents, j’avais un peu peur que cela me perde mais ça n’a pas été le cas.

Une super découverte.
