Scientists attempt to save humanity by implanting all the world’s evil into one human vessel. Will it work?

Seventeen-year-old Paul Salvage competed and won the honor of becoming that Vessel. When scientists implant the particles in Paul, the evil transforms him, cures his amnesia, and makes him remember his own act of rage. With this revelation, Paul questions whether he’ll be able to control the devil particles coursing through him.

The government-backed scientists keep Paul in a cave laboratory to monitor him and test his new super-human abilities. They intend to confine him there indefinitely, but Paul wants to leave to aid in the reconstruction of the new society and to be with his girlfriend and grieving father. Frustrated, Paul uses his devil particle-enhanced brain to manipulate them into letting him go home for a weekend.

Will Paul be able to save the world, or will he destroy it?

The Vessel is the heart-pounding second book in The Devil Particle dystopian YA series. If you like flawed characters and world-shattering stakes, then you’ll love Kristin A. Oakley’s gripping tale.

Years ago, Kristin A. Oakley wrote “The Bomb,” a flash fiction piece about a character named Paul. At the time, she was also working on the third book in the award-winning Leo Townsend series, but Paul couldn’t be ignored, so Leo had to wait. That 900-word story turned into The Devil Particle Series.

Kristin’s young adult dystopian series, The Devil Particle, is a Kirkus Review Recommended Read and has received 5-star reviews from both Readers’ Favorite and Reader Views. The second book in the series, The Vessel, has also received a 5-star review from Readers’ Favorite. The Runner, book three in the series, will be released in 2024.

In addition to creating Paul and Leo’s stories, Kristin reviews books and writes about being a novelist in her bi-monthly newsletter, available at kristinoakley.net. She lives in the Milwaukee area and likes to hang out in coffee shops, writing characters into impossible situations.

Hello everyone, I'm Mr. C Reviewer, and tonight we're discussing (She/Her) Kristin A. Oakley's work. The Vessel, which is the second book in The Devil Particle Series.

I'd like to extend a huge thank you to Kristin for providing a physical copy of 'The Vessel' as a ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is set to be published 20 November, 2023. The narrative, told using first person perspective following Paul, which spans 35 chapters and 292 pages.

Summary: Seventeen-year-old Paul Salvage has triumphed in the competition to become the Vessel, a prestigious honour. As scientists implant the mysterious particles within him, they unwittingly unleash an ancient evil that not only cures his amnesia but also forces him to confront a forgotten act of rage. Now, plagued by doubts, Paul grapples with the daunting task of controlling the malevolent force that courses through his veins.

Review:
-I appreciate how this book seamlessly continues the story from where the first book left off. I was delighted to reunite with some of the characters from the first book. It is advisable to experience the entire series for a comprehensive understanding, but this particular book can also be enjoyed as a standalone due to its adept recap of the first instalment. The recap is skilfully integrated in a manner that maintains engagement, setting it apart from other books that attempt this approach. I feel like the book had a good display of character and place detail, allowing us the readers to fully immerse ourselves in the story.

I found the pacing of this book to be much improved compared to the first book in the series. While the initial instalment had a slow and measured pace, this second book bold text picked up the tempo and kept me engaged throughout. The author has clearly honed their craft, delivering a more streamlined and balanced narrative that never feels rushed or dragging. On the final page of chapter 13 contained a minor typographical error, as it was missing a closing quotation mark within the book.

I was happy that we got to uncover additional layers of Paul’s family history within the pages of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed delving into the portrayal of the side effects that Paul experienced after becoming the vessel. The narrative was intense and, at times, evoked a sense of shock as I immersed myself in the details. I liked the unexpected turns and surprises that the book had in store. Like with the first book the gradual build-up of suspense. I was completely engrossed and I found it incredibly difficult to put down. It brought to mind the captivating storytelling of ‘The Loop’ series by Ben Oliver and the enthralling narrative of the ‘Chaos Walking’ series by Patrick Ness.

-While reading, I found myself captivated by the developing bond between Oscar and Paul. The author has crafted some truly poignant moments between these two characters, showcasing their deepening connection in a way that feels both authentic and heart-warming. Providing a refreshing respite from the darker themes that permeate the story. However, as the story progresses, we see Paul’s character take a darker turn, adding an element of tension and unease to their small bond. This shift is masterfully handled by the author, leaving me with a sense of unease and a desire to know more about what lies ahead.

-The emotional depth of this book truly moved me to tears, particularly with the impactful ending. The narrative was so compelling that I felt a sense of melancholy as the book concluded. The conclusion was refreshingly unique, unlike many other books I’ve read, and it resonated deeply with me. While I eagerly anticipate the next instalment, I am aware that it may diverge significantly from the first two books in the series. I am thrilled to discover that the third book, titled 'The Runner,' is set to be available later next year in spring . When this book is released, I will acquire a copy for myself. Considering the increasing popularity and accessibility of audiobooks, I do think that it is appropriate for this book to have an audio edition. I rate each story I read out of 10, and for this one, I give it an 9. Remember this was what I thought about the book personally and I suggest that you give it a go for yourself.

Heart-pounding, page-turning, action from beginning to end!
If you weren’t already hooked after reading book one in the Devil Particle series, you will most certainly be just a few pages into book two. With the world a better place now that all evil has been contained in one person, citizens eagerly embrace living without the fear of violence. Lauded as a hero but with his behavior closely monitored, Paul begins to suspect things might not be that simple. As his suspicions mount, we’re catapulted into one breathtaking scene after another in this expertly plotted saga. The surprising conclusion will leave you stunned and wanting more! The author has created a well-developed cast of characters in this wonderfully disturbing dystopian action-adventure story. But it’s far more than that—the story’s deeper theme will have you asking, “What does it mean to be a good person, when there’s no chance you can be evil?”

The Vessel is Number Two in a four-part series that explores the nature of evil in human hearts, through the lens of a future society in which things have gone terribly wrong.
A heroic teenager from the first book, The Devil Particle, has won the competition to become the Vessel containing—and implicitly controlling—all the world’s evil intentions in the form of physical particles known as agonistons.
The question in this book is not “Who gets to be the Vessel?” Rather, it is, “What happens to an idealistic young protagonist after receiving a massive injection of evil?” Are good intentions enough, or is there something about evil that is so creeping and insidious that nobody can master it?
It’s a fast read, a chilling read, and a compelling story. I’m in for the next two installments. Hurry up and write them, Kristin Oakley!

This second book in the Devil Particle Series seamlessly continues the story after the end of book one. Through his first person narration, the readers experience how Paul reacts to and changes after the implantation of the devil particles.

In my opinion, the book could have benefitted from a change of POV. Many things were left unexplained because Paul wasn't interested in asking about them. Also, there were far too many unnecessary flashbacks or mentions of what happened in book one for my taste.

Still, the concept of this series is very intriguing and after the way book two ended, I'm still looking forward to the next one.

I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.

The Vessel continues the story of Paul Salvage that started in The Devil Particle. I highly recommend reading the first book in the series before this book. The Vessel raises interesting issues: Without evil are we simply sheep with no will of our own, is there a limit to how much evil even a good person can withstand, is evil necessary for a functioning society? The author introduces an interesting premise, placing all of the world's evil in one person, to explore the battle between good and evil. I recommend the two book series.

Kristin Oakley pours her heart and soul into the next book in the Devil Particle series. From page one, we are thrown into the world of Paul, who bears the weight of the world on his young shoulders. He agonizes about his moral strength, his commitment to family and friends, and his ability to save the world from the weight of its sins. So much to take in, but Kristin moves the action along, with unique characters, a plot that doesn’t quit, and some deep life lessons to ponder.

Love this series! I am excited about the next two. Characters are well-developed and you can envision the world Oakley has created. If you have any interest at all in Divergent or Hunger Games, Oakley should be your next choice!
