A Match Made for Thanksgiving
Advertising executive Nick Wong enjoys living in Toronto. He loves late nights partying and taking women back to his penthouse. And so it is with great reluctance that he returns to his boring hometown of Mosquito Bay for Thanksgiving.
This year, however, is even worse than usual. His interfering parents and grandparents, frustrated with the lack of weddings in the family, have invited blind dates for him and his three siblings. Nick’s brother Greg has been set up with Lily Tseng, who just so happens to be Nick’s latest one-night stand, the one he can’t get out of his mind.

Cute holiday novella, but way too spicy 🌶️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️ for my personal liking

This was SO cute and 100% needs to be lengthened out into a Netflix original rom-com ASAP, please and thank you. I loved the family dynamics here and thought the romance itself was super swoon-worthy and sweet, but honestly... I just want all the hilarious, ridiculous family holiday hijinks. I will say this wasn't the most memorable read for me, but I did enjoy it a whole lot and loved the author's narrative voice, so I'm very excited to continue the series at some point soon! (And seriously, Netflix, GET ON IT.)

I had Jackie Lau on my radar for a longer time now, so when this book popped up on my kindle I didn't hesitate. It had wonderful funny and swoony moments, but then there were also parts that felt rather rushed to me and the meddling family became tiring after a while. I loved the Asian Canadian setting though and plus points also for the main characters being able to talk to each other and having a mature conversation rather than leaving miscommunication destroy their relationship. I truly loved the ending. Overall it was a light-hearted and quick read with quirky rom-com vibe.

2.5 stars rounded up; One of my personal preferences when reading about reformed playboys very much affected my enjoyment of this book.
This is a quick and low angst read where the h decides to have a one night stand, meets the H at a bar, they’re vibing, and hit the sack together (so fast burn). The H is very successful and makes it clear he’s an expert at ONS, whereas the h has always been a relationship girlie. A week later, they meet again under surprising circumstances and both are still interested so decide to keep seeing each other. The h has some insecurities about him changing his normal attitude and he even has some doubts, but he’s very into the h and they have some cute moments.
Written in third person, dual POV. No ow/om drama (the H does get approached by a woman at an event later but he just mentions he has a gf; h is technically set up as a blind date for H’s brother but there’s not a connection, ONS history aside).
The H’s family were a hoot and I loved the representation of a Canadian Asian family. Along with how the H felt out of place in a small town that wasn’t diverse, but found his footing in Toronto. The h loved lists (same) and wasn’t trying to change who she was, which I also liked, since she easily could have been written as pushing herself outside of her comfort zone to “match” him. A few steamy scenes that are explicit and decent round the romance out. The H wanting to feed the h and making her dessert was precious.
What didn’t work for me was how even up til the very end, there are so many tiny references to the H’s past sexual experiences. Even when he’s thinking about how she’s different, he has to toss in a thought of how many women have been in his bed before her. C’mon man, not my jam. His family even know this about him. I also felt like the storytelling had too much telling and not enough showing, which kept me somewhat disengaged from the main characters.
The ending is HFN, with a lead in to the next sibling’s holiday book and I do wonder at the end of this little series if there’s more of an overall HEA picture for the family as a whole.

December 4, 2019Short and very sweet romance where a CEO and a woman with a "do interesting things" list have a one night stand. Super tropey romance, in other words, executed well. There's no significant conflict or angst: this is very much feelgood. Well written and exceedingly likeable, with a big comedy family background and a couple of very funny scenes.

3 stars (I liked it with caveats)
Fluffy, fun, and short. I’m such a sucker for meddling families and there is SO MUCH meddling here. I’m glad I took a break from my recent binge of Christmas novellas and tried another holiday novella instead. Reading about Thanksgiving is perfect for my autumn mood!
I don’t use the word “rom-com” often, mostly because the majority of books labeled as rom-coms in traditional publishing don’t make me laugh out loud. But I do believe that this novella is a rom-com; I was snorting with laughter every two pages. The food porn is exquisite (I want dumplings! And lemon tarts! And bubble tea!).
So what didn’t work for me? I liked everything that happened during Thanksgiving (the holiday stuff ends at 64%). But once they decide to be in a proper relationship in Toronto, I wish we had a little more conflict. Most of the self-doubt and insecurities are in Lily’s head, and it gets easily resolved the second she brings it up to Nick. And that’s perhaps not entirely fair because the novella is meant to be fluffy. I just felt like something was missing. Not sure exactly what, but I wanted more of the relationship conflict.
Don’t get me wrong; I still liked the story and would recommend it for a breezy and fun read. And after that ending, I’m looking forward to the next story in the series (I think the holidays planned are Christmas, Chinese New Year, and Valentine’s Day).
Unrelated tangent: the following exchange happens early on and it reminded me of Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series! 😂 I confess to never thinking about the word “horny” in that light.
“Why did you pick tonight for your one-night stand? Has it been a while for you?”
“Six months, which actually isn’t that long to me, but I was...”
“Horny?” he supplied.
“Yeah. That.”
“Say the word.”
“No! Not here. Plus I’ve always hated that word. It makes me think of monsters.”

Okay so I know it's a novella and I know it's meant to be short and fluffy but I think I wanted more holiday hijinks. I thought they had good chemistry before Lily went to meet the Wongs. And I liked the interactions between the family members during dinner aside from when it sort of breaks the fourth wall to have the grandmother talking about using romance tropes to set up the grandkids. After Lily and Nick decided to try a real relationship it kind of fizzled out for me. I think I'll try one of Jackie Lau's longer books because I'm not sure this series really works for me.

Wow this really did not work for me. It felt very forced, and also really mundane. I liked Nick’s family, but felt absolutely no chemistry between Nick and Lily. The story also started in the wrong place. Should have started at Thanksgiving. I wouldn’t have read this though except for Read Harder bc I’m still in my allergic to romance phase, so take this review with a big grain of salt.

Jackie Lau continues to surprise and delight me with her variety of romance novels and novellas, and when I heard she was writing a holiday novella series featuring the Wong family, (aptly named Holidays with the Wongs) I immediately added them to my to-read list. First up is A Match Made for Thanksgiving. It’s rare to find a holiday romance novel with Thanksgiving as the focus and even more so, one that celebrates Canadian Thanksgiving (it’s the first one I’ve found). As a fellow Canadian, that makes it a special treat though you don’t have to be Canadian to enjoy it.
Nick Wong grew up in the small town of Mosquito Bay, Ontario but is much happier in his new penthouse apartment in Toronto. Still, going home for Thanksgiving, like any other holiday, is a given, and he’s looking forward to seeing his family, though like any set of siblings and parents, there’s sometimes a bit of friction. The best part of living on his own is being able to do what he wants, see whom he wants, have a one night stand if he wants, and know that everything is on his terms. With his parents and grandparents constantly reminding him that he’s not getting any younger and he should be settling down (i.e providing them with grandbabies), he never quite knows what’s in store for him on his trips home.
Lily Tseng can’t deny that she likes a man in a suit and the handsome man at her elbow in the downtown Toronto bar definitely qualifies. She’s on a quest for a one-night stand, what has up to now seemed an impossible task until yummy Nick helps her out. One night of steamy sex, no last names, no expectations, and she leaves Nick’s bed with a smile on her face. Until her mother calls, and tells her that she’s set her up on a date for Thanksgiving with Greg, an engineer, whose family she’ll be joining for dinner in her former home town.
Nick arrives home for Thanksgiving to discover that his mom and Ah Ma have plotted a little matchmaking, setting up dates for him and his three siblings. His date is Janice, a local pig farmer. And his brother Greg’s date? Lily, Nick’s one night stand, arriving at their family doorstop with a tupperware container of nanaimo bars and a look mirroring his own shock and dismay. Is it fate having a laugh or a handing a second chance to Lily and Nick?
So obviously the set-up for this story is quite funny and the laughs never really stop.
Nanaimo bars, for those unfamiliar with the Canadian dessert treat, are a three layered bar consisting of a graham wafer, cocoa and coconut crumb crust, a custard flavored butter icing middle and a top layer of smooth chocolate ganache. No word of a lie, after reading this book I had an intense craving for nanaimo bars and had to buy myself some, fortunately stocked at my local grocery store. But I digress.
Despite Nick and Lily being set up with other people, they find time to talk to each other at the Thanksgiving dinner and when they’re caught in a kiss by Ah Ma the gig is up. Clearly Greg and Lily won’t work out as a couple (Greg isn’t particularly upset by the news) and when the family finds out that Lily and Nick already know each other his mom and Ah Ma are equally excited to have made a match even if it wasn’t the one they planned. It seems only fair for Lily to invite Nick to her family Thanksgiving in return, giving the couple an excuse to see each other again. Then it’s time to meet Lily’s equally supportive and interesting family. Her father unfortunately passed away a few years ago, still leaving Lily with echoes of grief that she is able to share with Nick.
The conflict comes in their expectations of what comes next. Lily’s attempt at a one night stand has veered towards relationship territory. She really likes Nick and his family and wouldn’t mind dating him. The sex is great too. Nick though has done a good job steering away from commitment and isn’t sure whether he’s ready to jump into an exclusive relationship. But contemplating life without Lily makes him overcome his fears and take a chance on love.
The overall themes of the story are family, friendship and finding love when you least expect it. It’s a lighthearted read, with plenty of laughs and a delightful sexy romance for two very likable characters. Greg, who lost his date to his brother will get his chance at an HEA in the upcoming A Second Chance Road Trip for Christmas (how very trope-y!). It looks to be equally entertaining and I can’t wait to read it!

This, Nick supposed was what happened when your parents unexpectedly invited dates for all their children. It probably didn’t help that he wanted to rip off his brother’s date’s pink sweater and feed her nanaimo bars.

I used to say I was a sucker for Christmas romances. However, I’ve realized that I just love holiday romances in general. I simply love getting a window into the joy of people’s celebrations. I was looking for a happy read this month, and A Match Made for Thanksgiving delivered. This was a very fun read indeed.
So many holiday romances feature people in the city moving back to their small towns and marrying the sheriff. Jackie Lau plays with the small-town romance tropes a bit in this story. Her hero, Nick Wong, is perfectly happy to stay in Toronto. While he is going back to Mosquito Bay for Thanksgiving, he isn’t exactly aching to stay there and give up city living.
When Nick gets back for Thanksgiving, he learns a plot is afoot. His family has set him and his three siblings up with dates for Thanksgiving dinner. The pairings are mostly hilariously wrong, but who did Nick’s brother Greg get set up with? None other than Lily Tseng, a one-night stand that Nick just can’t get out of his mind.
Neither Nick nor Lily is looking for a committed relationship, but I loved seeing how they got thrown together in this story. The chemistry is believable, and I liked that they actually try to be honest with each other even when their feelings are all over the place.

I have wanted to read Jackie Lau for a while now, because she appeared oftentimes on my Twitter feed (from fellow readers). This one is offered for free on both Amazon and Kobo so I decided that it would be a good title 'to dip my toe' into her writings
The Good Things
I liked it! It was quite fun romp and the family was funny enough. PLUS, there were quite a number of scenes involving East Asian food, and my South-East Asian heart was happy. Bubble tea, dumplings, even a mention of Taiwan crispy chicken! Yum! While it started around Thanksgiving, Nick and Lily also dated afterwards before the relationship became a "steady" one, so timeline worked.
There were meddling family too... I enjoy meddling family stories, but when they are from non-Asian family. Because meddling Asian family can be "too close to reality" and then I start to feel sorry for the characters, and angry on their behalf. BUT, in here, I thought the dose was just right.
The Not-so Good Things (for me anyway)
The number of sex scenes. I like my holiday novella to be less about sex and more about talking, dating, enjoying the seasons, and all. I like ALL my romance to be like that, actually, but more so on holiday romances. There were quite many of sex scenes here and it was disrupting my holiday reader mood.
Also, AFTER Nick and Lily returned to Toronto, the story felt like it was missing some thing. It was mainly about Nick (at first) thought about the commitment, and Lily felt insecure because she didn't feel like she fit with Nick's glamorous world. But at the same time, since this part was only 1/3rd of the book, things were like "swept away with the broom" quickly, you know?
Anyway, It is good to know that Nick has three more siblings, because I want to read ALL their stories, and what attempts of matchmaking that the family store for them. Bought the complete series and would try to read them all with my OWN end-year holiday round the corner.

Absolutely adorable. I loved Lily and her sweet 'boring'-ness. I thought dashing Nick was equally sweet. I like that they had their families involved and the silly moments were sweet and their was low drama. A quick, light, adorable read perfect for the holidays!

This book made me crave bubble tea... haha! This is a really fun, fluffy holiday book with quirky rom-com coincidences and the BEST meddling family. I'm so excited that this is part of a series called Holidays with the Wongs, because I NEED more of this zany family's hijinks! I love that Nick and Lily hook up for a one-night stand and both are intrigued, but it is what it is so they go their separate ways... until Lily shows up as Nick's brother's blind date at their family Thanksgiving! I love both Lily and Nick, and appreciate the ways in which they fit together and help each other grow, HOWEVER - Ah Mah and Ah Yeh are by far my favorite characters in this book and kind of stole the show. Nick's mom and Ah Mah concocting their matchmaking schemes based on the tropes in the romance novels they read had me CRACKING UP. I look forward to seeing more of what kind of nonsense they get up to in future books in the series.

I finished this ebook, but it was a struggle. The only thing that saved this contemporary romance novella from being a total loss was a bit of humor, especially in the first part of the story. Otherwise, too sweet and too much smut for my taste.

A cute holiday novella!! (Even if I got a bit confused by the timing of Canadian Thanksgiving.) Nick’s family was precious, and I liked the natural inclusions of his heritage. Their meet cute (and cute re-meet) was great, and they had decent, if unexceptional, chemistry. I really appreciated how both characters were wary and hesitant about entering this relationship, but how the climax was them having a mature conversation rather than a wild, brief breakup.

I absolutely adored this story from this new-to-me author!
Lily & Nick were SO cute together. They clicked immediately. Their chemistry was strong, and perfect for what they were looking for and what they both wanted.
She’s a rule follower.
He’s a rule breaker.
She’s a good girl.
He’s a player.
But one thing they agreed on…one night.
DEAL.
This quick read gave me exactly what I was looking for. The humor was fun and entertaining and the steam level was delicious. Nick’s family was hilarious and I fell hard for them. I would love to hang with them for a Thanksgiving dinner.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I will definitely be reading more of this author’s work!

A Match Made for Thanksgiving was a fantastic read with an amazing romance and a great group of side characters.
Nick Wong enjoys his life in the city and all it has to offer including the wide variety of single women. His hometown of Mosquito Bay can’t compete, but he heads home for Thanksgiving only to discover his family has set up Nick and his three siblings with blind dates. The problem? His brother Greg’s date is Lily Tseng, Nick’s latest one night stand that he can’t get out of his head. Lily has Nick thinking it’s time he gave a real relationship a shot, but first he has to make it through the holiday and convince Lily to take a chance on him.
Nick and Lily’s relationship begins with a one night stand that is initiated with a humorous exchange between the pair. I really enjoyed Nick and Lily’s first meeting and thought it wonderfully showcased the two’s personalities. I found Lily to be an incredibly relatable character as the doubts and insecurities she had were ones I myself have had and her relatability made her very easy to connect with. After that pair’s one night stand, they don’t see each other again until Thanksgiving dinner at Nick’s family’s house. I loved the direction their relationship went after that dinner and I thought everything progressed at the perfect pace.
Nick’s family was an absolute delight and I loved the scenes set at their home. I really enjoy nosy, caring families in my romances and Nick’s family fits that bill perfectly. The characters all felt incredibly real from the siblings outrage at the dates and their parents and grandparents insistence they need obviously need the help. I also really loved the family’s reference to common romance novel tropes and how they used them to pick the dates.

What a great start to a holiday-themed series! I loved how obnoxious the parents and grandparents are in this where they try to interfere in their kids' love lives based on romance tropes. The grandma especially is hilarious. I wasn't 100% sold on the reformed playboy trope, but I did find the way that the couple couldn't help but be together really sweet. Definitely would recommend!

This was such a fun time! This novella is the first in the Holidays with the Wongs series and it was such a delight. I loved meeting Nick Wong and his family. Nick lives in Toronto and is a successful ad exec, or “Mr. Fancypants” as his family calls him. He’s at a bar one night and overhears a lady muttering to herself about how hard it is to have a one night stand. Nick quickly introduces himself and he and Lily actually hit it off and decide to enjoy a one-night only together. They share a fabulous night together and then go their separate ways (although both are wanting more). Nick returns to his small town for thanksgiving and his mom has set up all her kids with blind dates and then Lily walks in as one of Nick’s brothers blind date!
This book left me hungry! All the delicious food descriptions, noodles, soup dumplings, bubble tea, thanksgiving spread, Nick’s baking!, all the desserts. I loved the Wong family, Nick’s grandparents are hilarious. And Nick and Lily together were so sweet and steamy!
