I devoured the book. The unique blend of college hockey, romance, and the mysterious undertones within the sorority had me turning the pages breathlessly.
The actual sport was played, and we got to experience the tension and action on the ice. The captivating fusion of hockey action on the ice intertwined with the intricate dynamics of the sorority life created a compelling backdrop that had my eyes glued to every page. The tension arising from Jesse's immediate attraction to Peyton during her sorority initiation is🔥. I was shocked by the level the members of sorority would go to in pursuit of vengeance.
Peyton is a determined nursing student who unexpectedly finds herself entangled in unexpected circumstances. Jesse is the hockey team captain who enjoys the benefits and perks of his position.
I enjoyed Jesse's unwavering commitment and affection for Peyton, going as far as risking his professional hockey career. Additionally, Jesse's protective and caring nature adds an emotional depth to their relationship, especially when Peyton life is threatened.
Mona, omg, is a darling. She’s funny, outgoing, and has a take no nonsense attitude that had me smiling.
Ummmm what did I read??? I’m so confused!! So much happened whilst simultaneously I don’t understand what did?? There were soo much threads left unanswered and the way it ended was really confusing!! Like it literally just suddenly stopped!!
I love just about anything Jamila Jasper writes so I’m not surprised that I loved this one too! The kids really act their age sometimes (by the things they do and say) and I actually like that. There is still TONS of heat, dubcön, OTT super possessive alpha male to go along with it though! There is a mystery to be said over here. They why if a situation drives the whole story with side characters and actions thrown in to keep you guessing. I ended up loving our H, Jesse. He had a good balance of initial douchëiness to swoon worthy book boyfriend. Gorgeous and fit within all the dips and valleys in between, he was 🔥🥵😮💨! He knew what he wanted and went after it (her) with no holds barred! It was so so good! Then our h, Peyton was a little firecracker herself! Super smart, sassy and up on her game. She was NOT putting up with ANY shenanigans let me tell you. These two together? Made a very smëxy story with some laughter sprinkled in for good measure! All in all, I was very entertained and gobbled this book up in a day. Can’t wait to read Diesels story next month when it comes out!
What a ride. From the first page I was looking around the room like “are you reading this?” I’ve never wanted to be a character’s mother more so than Peyton’s. I just wanted to snatch her out of school and tell her there are community college success stories that she doesn’t need to go through this! But better believe I kept reading because I had to know what possibly is this mystery.
Jesse had a tall hill to climb to make me like him. And to be honest I’m still giving him the side eye. That kind of “I’ll accept him because he’s not going anywhere” like a bestie with a boyfriend.
Great writing as always, it was a good lead into the series. Kind of a rip the band aid off type lead. I am looking forward to Diesel and Mona’s story next as their personalities almost outshined Peyton’s and Jesse’s in the mere moments they had in this book.
I know this review is long but I highly encourage you to read it if you are even thinking about picking up a book by this author. Spoiler alert, I'm not nice
Edit - I was coming on here to post my full review because it was too long for the Kindle app only to see that this cover description or completely different. Instead of the hockey team I read about this is being marketed as a football romance?!?! The f*ck?! Where's the addition I read? You know, the one that's being sold on Amazon! I want to believe this mistake, but if you read my full review you'll understand why I don't think it is. I'm dropping this down to 1.5 stars and the only reason why I'm rounding up is because of Jesse and Peyton.
My feelings for this book are, to put it mildly... complicated. There are things I genuinely love and there are things I flat out hate. Get your libations ready because this is going to be a long one.
Note, it goes without say this is a dark romance with subject matter that's going to make a lot of people very uncomfortable. However, because there's no content warning, I'm going to provide that now. R@pe, dub-con, racial slurs, racially charged violence, violence against women, cult mentality and practice, and microaggressions (like a lot). I'm sure I'm missing some things but I think that covers most of it. These are not spoilers, it's the author's duty. Readers have the right to know about potentially triggering content in a book so they can make an informed decision as to whether or not they want to read it. Not doing this makes me lose a lot of respect for this author. Let's get into the review.
I want to start with nice things first but we got to talk about the elephant in the room, this book is technically terrible. And by technically, I'm talking about the technicalities of writing. Not the artistry, but just basic writing conventions. - Example number one, the book is written in first person present tense but it switches to past tense randomly. I'm not saying a book can't do that but when it happens in the middle of a sentence, that tells me think it's not a choice. I mean it's a choice but not an artistic one. - Example number two, the book does not abide by the first door you open is the first door you close rule. The sentence and paragraph structure is all over the place. If a character is walking into a room, why are we hearing about several other actions we didn't even know about before they make it into the room? Why is door three being closed while doors one and two are still wide open? And we didn't even know door four was open but there it is. That might not make a lot of sense if you're not a writer or an artist but trust me, it's extremely frustrating to read. - Example number three, there are these weird gaps that completely disrupt the pacing and flow of the story. I genuinely don't know why they are there. The transition are terrible. - Example number four, there's way too much telling and not enough showing. Don't just tell me that Peyton told her secret to Jesse. Show me. Hearing it from Jessie several pages later when he's pissed off doesn't have nearly the same effect. It falls flat when it should have been given a moment. A lot of scenes are like this. Things are said in the wrong moment when they should have been shown to us. - Example number 4.5, constantly naming what song is playing and by whom. Once or twice is fine when it fits the mood but it happens so much in this book. And the songs aren't even good so why bring them up? I don't need to hear about these characters listening to Mac Miller or Yeah. You see how cringy that sounds? Think about how I felt reading about a bunch of college kids making out to Katy Perry's Dark Horse in a sorority house! This isn't a technicality but it's cringy AF. Don't do it! - Example number five...ish, lots of spelling and grammar errors but as I always say, that's the name of the game when you read indie books. Honestly, this book NEEDS a developmental editor and a copy editor. I understand not everyone can afford those things but this book is hurting when it doesn't need to. There is a story here, a good one, but it's hard to see with all these technical issues.
Let's talk about that good story. This dark academia, twisted sorority hockey cult thing, love it. It's messed up but so good. Mama, I was here! It drops off towards the end but picks itself back up in a way that I was going along until the end (more on that later). However, that's not what made me almost give this book four stars. That's all because of the characters. They are great fully developed with their own backstories, personalities, and goals. Especially Jesse and Peyton. In fact, let's fangirl over Jesse for a moment. He's kind, never slut shames, named a bunch of black hockey players when Peyton said black people don't ice skate, taught her how to ice skate (why don't more hockey romances do this? It was so cute!), great in bed and loves Peyton so deeply for who she is, not what she looks like. I mean she's hot and he's into that but he loves her for her. There's so much chemistry and character development between them. Both of these characters grow as people and in turn, they grow in their relationship. Peyton lightens up and Jesse grows up. It's really beautiful. The smut is also hot. Seriously, this woman is talented when it comes to writing smut. Jesse and Peyton have my heart but I loved all the characters. Piper and Clara make great villains, Mona is an amazing friend, and the other servory sisters were dope. Diesel can kick rocks but everyone else is great. Honestly, with characters this strong and a story that's interesting that's all you really need sometimes. Hell, the book even remembers that this is a college setting so the characters go to class and have to study. Do you have any idea how many books don't do this?! With all this, I can overlook the technical stuff.
Until I got to the end.
(Okay you see how these breaks don't make any sense? The book does this constantly! Why? I ask again, WHY?!)
I haven't been this angry at a book's ending in a long time. The book just ends. Literally. Peyton orgasms a bunch of times and that's it. I thought there was going to be another chapter or at least an epilogue but I was sorely mistaken and somehow also right, because there is another chapter. It's just not from Peyton or Jesse's perspective. It's Diesel. Remember Diesel? The terrible friend who constantly insults women and thinks being a rich white southern man means his life is difficult? Seriously, I don't know if that was meant to be a joke or not and I'm not sure which outcome is better. The entire last chapter is him from way earlier in the story having dinner with his dad and hearing that he has to have a kid (not a spoiler, it's a literal the next book). Then it cuts to him driving Jesse to Peyton and he meets Mona for the first time. Honestly, I don't know why this was here because all he did was say hi and she said hi back. The worst part is I can't even confirm if that's canonically accurate because we were only told about Jesse picking up Peyton. We didn't see the interactions of all four characters together. If you had just told us we wouldn't need this last stupid f*cking chapter and could have had a decent epilogue for the two great characters! I'm mad but here's why I'm genuinely pissed.
The entire story (excluding Diesel's dumbass chapter) ends at 75%, page 220 on my Kindle. That leaves 77 more pages. What's on those pages I hear you asking? Six chapters of another book, cover photos and blurbs for other hockey books, her backlist, and a thank you to her Patreon members line by line. They're not clumped together in one paragraph because that would make sense and we can't have nice things! I'm not being dramatic when I say this is stealing. Instead of just ending or give me more book, you give me 77 pages of nonsense?! Authors have been banned from Amazon for doing this. I would never report an author, especially since I can't confirm if this happens in her other books. I certainly won't be reading to find out but this shit is not okay. And you have a Patreon, people are paying you monthly for your writing? Shame on you!
I love indie authors, I will always support them. It's hard and mistakes are going to happen. But this is beginner shit. This author has way too many books out, many of which are not on KU and you have to buy out right, she should know better. Maybe she does or doesn't. Either way, it shows a lack of care and respect for the reader. I can't tell you who to support because a lot of y'all are supporting people who are garbage and don't deserve your coin. Some people can appreciate the art without reading the little plaque next to it but when the canvas isn't even done it's hard to overlook the plaque and not wonder why. 2.5 stars but I'm rounding up for Jesse and Peyton. They deserved better. You deserve better. If you read this author and love her, good for you. But I have questions and aren't polite.
I usually love her books and can usually read them pretty well, but honestly, I could not get through this book as easily as the others. It was so confusing I did not understand what her secret was I did not understand her motive for anything or his and how did she betray him again I feel like these characters need an lesson in what loyalty and betrayal actually is… like it’s not betrayal that a girl you sign a contract for to have sexual intercourse with decided to use information against you so that she could get money to save her mom she did not know who you were before this honey .
Also the blatant racism from Jesse and so crazy but if my man every called my lady parts ” his “black c*nt” I would be mortified like in what world would that be okay so say to to someone ??! I’m all for dark romance but this was just not okay and I felt very uncomfortable the whole time reading this book and I’ve read some pretty so pretty messed up dark romances. Also I’ve read her other hockey romance series and it was also categorized as dark romance yet didn’t quite make me feel this way but Ill try the self book in December maybe it was just this one for me idk
***Spolier alert***I love this author but this book has me confused. Peyton was a bit annoying to me I don't know where to start. She claimed to be writing a story about the secret cult at the school and she willing lost her virginity to a stranger for a story. Clara drugged her and there was a video she send around which shows Peyton being raped we where never told if this story was true or false. Peyton claim she didn't feel raped and the hospital said she wasn't raped how can they tell she just had sex with Jesse she was drugged by Clara and Piper the same night and Mona told her about the video but she said she don't feel violated. Then she went to have sex with Jesse right after not even addressing the video of her being drugged of and raped. She only address the video of her a Jesse having sex. Clara and Piper got expelled from school they never went to jail for drugging and setting a gang rape. Peyton didn't speak to the cops and tell them what was done to her or show them they video she and Mona decided they would solve this themselves. Clara and friend return set a fire that was rules arson and they tried to kill Peyton again no arrest no investigation , Peyton and Mona again will investigate. Jesse was maybe the only same person in the book except he wanted to get his girlfriend pregnant while still in college.
Setting: Current time in Laguna Grove at North Eastern College near Boston MA.
Trope: Sports romance. Mixed race couple. Dark sexual encounters.
Main characters: 1. Peyton Banks, heroine, a Black college freshman assigned to be initiated into a prestigious all White sorority. 2. Jesse Rousseau, hero, a popular senior and caption of the college's hockey team with aspirations of being drafted by a pro team. 3. Mona, Peyton's roommate and best friend. 4. Diesel, a wealthy womanizer, the team's goalie and Jesse's best friend. 5. Cole Seabrook, co-captain of team. 6. Clara, Jesse's longtime off and on girlfriend and president of the sorority Peyton is pledging.
Although it's not labeled, I think, this is part of a series. The story held my interest and was not dark...there are some sexual encounter of dubious consen, dirty talk, girl on girl and male on male fights, and dizzying drama. Peyton and Jesse's love story is sweet despite it's less than desirable beginnings-with innocent vaginal Peyton being forced by the sorosity to perform oral sex on Jesse. This act and Peyton being a virgin sparked Jesse's possessiveness and Peyton's obsessiveness was sparked by Jesse's attention and protectiveness. Three quarters into the book, Jesse and Peyton were madly in love.
I thought the story was interesting. I like that the author makes sure to list all the triggers for the reader in the very beginning of the book. I felt it was necessary because there was a lot going on in the book. I felt like the story for Jesse and Peyton was cut a bit short to me. I did not feel like their story was finished at the end.
Throughout the entire book, I felt like there was a lot to the plot. I do not feel like the whole drama that too, place was ever resolved or finished. I am not sure if it will continue in the next book, but I wish I could know based on the next two characters mentioned in the end starting their storyline.
The main characters had a fast attraction and relationship which was a little intense and sweet all at the same time. I think the author kept you wanting to know what was going on during the story, but since the drama never resolved it fell a little short for me. I will probably read the next book to see if it continues.
Ok first NOTHING Peyton did made sense, her argumentive attitude and meanness towards Jessie was annoying. Of course I'm speaking of after the fact, when they were officially a couple.
Second in what Southern white world would a generational wealthy old white man want his college age grandson to have a baby in order to get his tuition paid????????????? I'll wait cause I need details I have a unused womb available for the right price. Side note: born and raised in Texas.
3rd her mother winning the lottery out the blue. 🙄🤔🙄 I'm going to let that marinate.
Then finally what happened with Clara and her minions after committing arseny, aggravated assault, and attempted murder?? Maybe and hopefully the answers are in the next book.
I loved this story. It’s started out spicy for me! Peyton has her reasons for wanting in the Sorority. She will do what she has to do to make it happen to the end of initiations. Jesse was not what I expected. I thought he was going to be the rich, spoiled guy who gets what he wants. But he was opposite. He was there just like all the other normal teens and didn’t have things handed to him. The two of them finally find their rhythm and it’s just beautiful. But the BFF Mona lol, definitely can’t wait to read her story!!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Loving this story with Jesse & Peyton, it seems like Jesse is bringing the freak out in Peyton though. The ending with Peyton’s mom was like WOW 😯, I would love 💕 that. But the sex is off the chart, but College will do that it’s as you get older that it spread out to 3-4 times a week or even less. I have the first hockey series Laguna Grove Vipers, I even re-read this series it was that good. I know as each issue of McCollege Minotaurs series come out I like to read the first one over then go to the next one.
I really enjoyed the book up until the point Peyton started to physically assault Jesse. I don’t understand, even when it’s fictional, that people and authors find this to be okay. If it was reversed this would have been a huge issue. Overall besides that Peyton was a likable character and I did like Jesse’s love for her and the storyline is very good. It was just the domestic violence ( a few slaps is domestic violence) for me. It is not okay for women to hit men or for men to hit women and I hate that in books.
Okay I really wanted to give this 5 stars but the way it ended just made me mad! I love BWWM stories, especially when they are realistic and this felt real to me. I loved how Jesse was written to be this strong possessive man that could toss her around and be dark and powerful but yet so sweet and loving to peyton when he needed or wanted to. The drama was definitely intense and the sorority night when peyton was attacked blew my mind! Definitely has some dark pieces to it that can be a little unsettling. But overall I thought it was a really great book!
Age range isn’t my preferred but enjoy author’s focus on chemistry, spice, and forced and prolonged contact which ups the spice and tension. She gives just enough of a bigger plot to keep the reading experience interesting while keeping spice the central focus . Like most of her stuff that I’ve read especially for the word and spice play. The men can be outrageous/ clueless at first but this is fiction so I don’t have an issue.
I genuinely enjoy this author and the fact that she writes about black women, in all the kinks you'd never see us in. This book in particular, felt rushed and a little unanswered in some areas. I also felt like I didn't know the characters for themselves beyond their physical attraction. Also, the whole "give you a baby" thing wasn't my thing. All in all good quick read, and gives the spice if that's what you're after!!🌶🌶🌶
Racism, degrading ritual to be a part of a sorority, secrets, loyalty, disappear ance that’s just for teasers! Instant attraction and love becomes an attraction between the hero and heroine. Mysterious fires and desertion to tear apart the sorority and hockey team which leads arson and secret videos. Yet, the fortitude of the sorority sisters and hockey team brings a bonding that can’t be broken!🦋
I really enjoyed this book up until it flopped. Jesse and Peyton was trying to make a baby, yet it never happened or it was just left out in tbe story. What happened to Clara and Piper, why was they not charged with drugging Peyton and who drugged Jesse? Who broke the other players wrist, who started the fire in the Sorrority house? To many unanswered questions. This book could have been great had it not been rushed. The ending sucked.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I wasn't sure if the series would be good or not but I was pleasantly surprised. Jesse's alpha character turns into an endearing lover devoted to loving Peyton.
The author did a good job of keeping the storyline moving at a fast pace and made it entertaining for the reader. I do like the development of the Mona and Diesel story and I cannot wait to read about them in the next book.
I absolutely LOVE reading books by Ms. Jamila. I couldn't wait for this book to drop so I could purchase and read it. However, I felt this book needed more. I prefer the Laguna Grove Vipers series as those books had me hooked from beginning to end. I'm not excited about the second book in this series after reading book 1.
The book was great and I especially appreciated the fact that it was grammatically correct, and didn’t have all the typos as other books have had. I love Jesse and Peyton story. They have a beautiful relationship, and I love that they were willing to go through everything to protect each other.
I really enjoyed this story, and the characters were very entertaining. The chemistry between Reese and Peyton was smoking hot and intense. The sorority girls were mean and racist but Peyton was able to turn the sorority around and make something worthwhile. The sex scenes were very graphic, but if that is your cup of tea, you will truly enjoy it.
This was really good, suspenseful and full of smut… Yassss! I’ve liked all the books in this series so far, but I do have to say that a lot of times the FMC descriptions doesn’t match!! Looking at the cover, she not dark skinned at all or is that just the way the MMC see them? I’m just curious. Still a great read by JJ
this might actually be the worst book i’ve ever read. with all the blatant and rampant racism, the incredible levels of unnecessary violence, and just the overall stupidity of all the characters i feel like i deserve financial compensation for making it all the way through this book especially with that abrupt ending.
Story was good … Ended with too many cliffhangers! What happened two Clara & Piper? Hoping they get what’s coming to them! Glad Peyton & Jesse ended up together 💓💝
I liked that jesse was different in a sense that he wasn't some spoiled brat! I love mona! I cannot wait until her and diesel hook up I know she is gonna give him a run for his money lol
The storyline was all over the place! Too many unanswered questions. Started off great with lots of excitement. Then it just flopped! Too many unanswered questions! I was very disappointed with the ending. I wa just so confused!
The story was pretty good but there were so many holes that weren’t filled. I’m hoping we get more answers with the next book. Other than that, I genuinely enjoyed the book. Can’t wait for book 2!
Yesssssssss! I've been waiting for this book! And it didn't disappoint either! I didn't think that I was going to like these hockey romance books, but I love them! They are definitely page turners!
This book is dark and I may need therapy because I loved it! I gave 4 stars because there was so much left with no answers. I really enjoy the way this author wrote this book though.
