I didn't realize this was about Gardnerian Wicca when I bought it, I thought it was just a generalized Book of Shadows. Still a good read, just not what I was looking for.
A great synopsis of Gardinerian and Alexandrian Wicca, and the beliefs, tools and practices thereof. It's a pretty quick read, and all the information is presented in a fairly straightforward manner. This is a good book for beginners, mostly just summarizing and scratching the surface, but letting you know there's a lot more to be discovered if you're interested, and where to look if you want to pursue the subject. This book really piqued my interest in Wicca. My only real criticism is that I was a bit disappointed to see that there wasn't much regarding self-innitiation and the solitary practice of Wicca, but at the same time I feel like the book supplied enough clues about it to direct the curious to the proper sources for futher study. I was surprised by how many different rituals, spells and potions there are for both love and money - after a while they started to seem almost redundant, but it was fascinating nonetheless. I'm excited to try my hand at some of the potions and inks, and at making candles and sachet bags. One doesn't have to be a witch to understand the inherent power of the nature, stones, colors, astrology, numbers, aromatherapy and herbal stimulation, and this book is a great source of information on these subjects as well.
I didn't realize when I purchased this book that it was written about Gardnerian Wicca which follows a much different path than I do. The two things that bothered me the most is the seemingly common use of their own blood in rituals, and the use of the scourge.
A direct quote from the book: "Wicca teaches that all magickal knowledge must be acquired through suffering". HUH!?!?! I've read dozens upon dozens of books on Wicca and Paganism and have NEVER heard anything close to that!! Where'd this woman get her info?
I thought this was a very bad book and a horrible example of "An it harm none, do as ye will". It is based on Alexandrian/Garderian and is not a book for solitary practitioners. I am one myself.
